Editorial Review

With its responsive user interface and improved reliability, Windows 2000 Professional is truly the most appealing version yet of Microsoft's operating system. Provided you have the hardware to run it (at least 64 MB of RAM is required), you won't find a better, more serious OS for business computing.

If you are upgrading from previous editions, the Windows 2000 wizards are particularly useful; they'll detect all your software and possible compatibility problems before you make the switch. In testing, our upgrade for a laptop was smooth and sure, and all previously installed software was automatically brought onboard to the new version.

Previously, Microsoft offered only limited support for notebook users within Windows NT 4.0. Windows 2000, however, allows most recent laptops to take advantage of power-management features, plug-and-play standard, plus recent hardware advances, such as the Universal Serial Bus (USB), IrDA for infrared devices, and FireWire. All these improvements mean that Windows 2000 will run on a greater array of systems.

There are some unexpected additions, too. You can also "hibernate" your Windows 2000 notebook to save and restore your work quickly as you go out on the road. In addition, this new OS adds more support for working offline with data saved from the Internet. (The Windows 2000 version of Internet Explorer 5.0 and Active Desktop, which allows you to access Web content from the desktop, are bundled here too.)

Besides support for mobile users, Windows 2000 beefs up reliability and greatly reduces the need to reboot as you update drivers, settings, and the like. Although you can still expect your Linux friends to brag that their favorite OS is even more reliable, the ease of configuration in Windows 2000 and its new-and-improved reliability make for an excellent choice for any serious computer user. Of course, if your business is using Windows 2000 Server on the back end, you will also benefit from easier installation and configuring of software, since these tasks can now be automated by remote administrators.

In all, Windows 2000 is a great-looking operating system, with a slick visual style, a responsive user interface, and plenty of power beneath the hood. For desktop and mobile users, it's a state-of-the-art choice for running today's Windows applications and for getting to the Internet. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Which is better and worse
Windows 2000 was released after Win98. Windows 2000 has richer colors then 98 and NT and 95. WinXP gives you choises of slecting colors. Of course the back ground and all that. WinXP is much faster then Win2000. If you want to have a computer be aware of Windows 95. Windows 95 can only play weak PC games that have 300Mhz or lower. 98 can play most out of all PC games. Today, we have advanced technology which gives us a better life for computers. 2000 and XP can play all the games because they are newer then 98, NT and 95. I would get WinXP.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatsest Microsoft OS Ever!!
I Gotta Say, This OS is probabbly the best OS Microsofthas ever released! It's so fast and so stable it's wired when you compare to Microsoft 98 from the blue screen of death to just a beautiful blue screen desktop. Windows ME is actually the same as 200 only it's the home edition and it's a lot cheaper. (NOT THE PRICE!) Windows XP Is Nice, but I like Windows 2000 a lot better!! Great For The Home and The Office!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time!
I was looking for a viable alternative to MS products and, in the last month, I have installed 5 different xxxBSD and Linux OS's. This version failed to recognize my hardware. As well, the istallation was D&O (dense and opaque). For people want to investigate other OS's, IMHO, the BSD's are not ready for you. In contrast, some of the Linux OS's have worked hard and do provide a usable path to these new OS's. ... Read more

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack (Linux)
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM (27 April, 2001)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Ever wonder what happened to the explorers launched into space at the end of Civilization 2? This game has the answer: they landed on a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri, and quickly divided into feuding factions, each bent on reshaping the new world according to their particular philosophy or culture. But the human colonists are not alone. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack bundles together the full version of Alpha Centauri with its official expansion pack, Alien Crossfire.

Alpha Centauri employs the same basic game play, rules, and concept as Civilization 2, but features enhanced diplomacy and a new, slicker interface. Players begin by assuming leadership of one of seven colony factions, establishing a base on the unexplored world. Conquering territory, developing technology, expanding the faction's population, and dealing with native life forms are critical priorities that must be correctly balanced for survival. If a faction's military output is low, it may be vulnerable to attacks by others or by dangerous mind worms that roam the landscape. On the other hand, building war machines at the expense of scientific research may result in trying to manage a massive but obsolete war machine or a rebellious population.

Within the game, you can now automate tasks that--in the earlier game--were repetitive and dull. The factions also have a better mix of leaders; three of the seven factions are headed by women. The computer AI for the other groups does a good job of making decisions in accordance with each faction's particular philosophy and world view, and will often surprise a human player with an offer of strategic alliance or a sudden double-cross.

Alien Crossfire, the official add-on pack for Alpha Centauri, expands on the original game by adding seven factions, new facilities, additional secret projects, and new branches to the elaborate technology tree. The pack also provides new enhancements to Alpha Centauri, including play-by-e-mail multiplayer mode, hot-seat multiplayer mode, and numerous tweaks to the interface and unit properties. Alien Crossfire's new factions include cyborgs, drones, pirates, and two sets of alien societies. Factions are balanced by a set of predetermined statistics and characteristics, such as bonuses for particular government and production styles.

This easy-to-learn and thoroughly absorbing game takes the best features of the classic Civ 2 and sets them in a brave new world. The addition of Alien Crossfire's expanded features, missions, and multiplayer capabilities ensures that players will be exploring the fascinating world of Alpha Centauri for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alien Crossfire
Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire is the best strategy game I have played in a long time. A boost even from the simpler Civilization II and other programs in that series, it is fantastic to play and a lot of fun. I reccomend the Pirates to play. Hint: Use global warming to your advantage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Computer Game I've Played
Where can I begin with this game? For any Sci-fi fan, this game is for you. I picked up a copy of Alpha Centauri from one of my friends. And I instantly got hocked on it. The whole concept of this game is wonderful.Earth life is threatned so the UN sent the game charcters up into whole newsolar system (which I read you can see from earth) to start a new life. Butwhen the spaceship lost connection to earth and the captain was killed, panic broke out. You start a new game crash landing on Planet. The firstpriority is to build a defense for your new base. Throuout the game youhave to comunicate with other factions ( people who were on the UN ship andhave landed on Planet to), build new bases (expand) and base facilities),build up a military, and go to war. You get to chose from a wide varity ofcharacters to chose from. A few examples are Chairman Yang of the Hive andBrother Lal of the Peacekeepers. Each Character has thier own personality. You my find some hard to work with (if you decide you want to work withthem). Also, each charcter has their own opinon on how to govern Planet. And when I found the Alien Crossfire Expansion, I was evn more excited.More factions, techs, and projects. I think I've talked enough but if youhave any questions about the game please e-mail me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
It is a very good game for Linux, too bad Loki when out of buisness.I'm affraid there will be no more games like this for a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addicting and Action Packed
I am completely hooked on this game.I find myself using any excuse to sit back down at the computer to pickup where I left off.The game is very challenging if played in one of the difficult settings. You can tweak the respawn to the point where the game is unplayably difficult if you want.Anyone who finished this in two days either doesn't work, sleep, or eat or played on either the easy or medium level.

I must say that this game raises the bar in gore factor. You can disembowel someone with a 44 magnum or grenade and they lie there screaming with their innards exposed and pulsating.Or you can roast the terrorists with the flamethrower.Their screams are--ghastly!If you can't stand violence STAY AWAY!By the way, the game does have password protected parental controls that lets you control the amount of violence.

...it's not so much KKK as neo-nazi.And I'd hardly call it pro-nazi propaganda since you spend your time blowing them away.In fact, you get to blow away all of your favorite terrorists from around the world at some point.

Loki did an awesome port. The install was painless, just a few clicks.Operation on my old TNT2 is flawless.Performance is quite impressive. The graphics are topnotch if not just a hair under Half-life.Overall for gameplay I'd recommend this as a must buy.Just remember you can adjust the amount of violence if you like.I've warmed up to the flamethrower though.

    -Peace

I have a 550Mhz AMD K6-II 3D Now with a GeFORCE 2 MX400 card and 256M RAM.While the game play was note worthy (I beat the game in two evenings) I thought the speed of the rendering engine was a bit sub par, mainly on the outdoor scenesIt could just be my system, but Quake1/2/3 that I also own run at very acceptable and consistent framerates under linux. The graphic eye candy was very nice. It's worth the money in any event, at least in my opinion. Now if I can quit playing Q3A online long enough to try SOF multiplayer option... ... Quake 3 Arena (Linux)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM
    list price: $19.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

As in its dozens of first-person shooter ancestors, id Software and Activision's Quake 3: Arena transports players into a violent, virtual world filled with deadly weapons, impressive power-ups, and intense combat. Players compete on 26 maps in either death match (free-for-all or team play), with goals to rack up as many kills as possible; or capture the flag, a team-oriented game with scoring based on the number of enemy flag captures. Though presenting the best death-match experience around, Quake 3's two game types lack the variation and originality of a similar game, Epic's Unreal Tournament.

Although you'll need the latest video card and computer hardware, it's impossible to dispute the sheer beauty of Quake 3's 3-D engine. The 26 maps are filled with exquisite architecture and impressive special effects; further, Quake 3 provides dozens of highly detailed player models to choose from. If you've played other id Software first-person shooters, the weapons should all look familiar: machine gun, shotgun, plasma gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, lightning gun, railgun, and the BFG 10K. Though impressively rendered and balanced, you've likely used them before in id's Doom, Quake, or any number of other first-person action games.

Hopping online and competing against other Quake 3: Arena players worldwide requires only a 56K or better Internet connection and a few mouse clicks. Quake 3 offers an infinitely replayable multiplayer experience (and a violent one--not for youngsters), but an unsatisfying solo game. Its single-player tournament mode--a series of death matches against computer AI bots--serves simply as a massive training exercise for multiplay. --Doug Radcliffe

    Pros:

    • Cutting-edge graphics
    • Near-perfect death-match multiplay
    • Detailed player models
    • Beautiful level architecture
    Cons:
    • Uninspired single-player experience
    • Lack of game variations
    • Unoriginal weapons

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent value... for Windows users!
The game is beautiful and I'm sure it works fine on Linux, but with a simple download from the Quake3 website, you get a fully functional WINDOWS version! In what looks like an attempt to boost sales, they included instructions for doing this in the package, so this is an officially endorsed alteration to the program.
Don't waste big bucks on the Windows version.Buy this version and apply the patch! It worked flawlessly for me on WindowsXP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Performance oflinux Game I've seen...
Quake 3 runs GREAT on my Linux system. That's not saying all that much, I suppose, until you realize that my Linux machine has a 3dfx Banshee as its video card, yet I can run at 1280x1024 without a single stutter or hickup.

On a technical merrit, this game gets a "5."

On a gameplay merrit, this game gets a "3."That is, I really enjoy plots... feeling like I'm playing a key role in some momentous event.Half-Life...System Shock (1&2)...Deux Ex...all great examples of this. It's fun, but it's not "absorbing."

    So, I give the game a "4."

The main thing to take away from this is that the Quake3 engine works GREAT in Linux.I recently installed the Linux binaries of Return to Castle Wolfenstein onto this machine. It also uses the Quake3 engine.Wolfenstein, so installed, is beautiful, and it DOES have a plot.

ID Software, who developed the binaries for this port and who developed the Quake-series engines, have singlehandedly proven that Linux is a great gaming platform, yet again. The Quake3 engine is being used everywhere these days, and there's no fundamental reason that ANY of them can't be easily ported over to Linux.

Well, that's not entirely true. It's true that there's no TECHNICAL reason that we can't have those games. And it's true that there's no MARKET reason that we can't have those games (minimal effort to create the port using all the same content, then a secondary distribution channel).

However, there is ONE reason... the illegal marketing practices of Microsoft. Will this play out like all the other "Competition with Microsoft" activities of the past few years?Stay tuned...

    4-0 out of 5 stars QUAKE 3 ARENA.............hmmmm...........do I like it?
Quake three arena is a great game with a new set of 3d-graphics quality, but the game gets boring after a while.Actually the game gets boring really quickly, but i still like it.I like the
models, the weapons, the maps, the storyline, but once your in the game it gets boring real quick.I RECOMMEND a SHINY New pentium 2, 350 formaxium performance, and 600mb of harddrive space for maxium installation of performance.I recommend a 32mb3d video card.It also has to be opengl 100% compatible.A major powerful a3d sound card.128pcisdram at 100mhrz for map performance.and directx7.But, if you don't care about performance and just wan't to play the game, your requirments:pentium 2:233mhrz, 16mb opengl compatible 3d video card, highquality sound card,45megs of harddrive space for miminum installation,directx6, and 64spcisdram.But, if your a extreme hardcore gamer and wan't quake3arena to work absouloutly PERFECT, these are the requirements I reccomend:pentium3 500mhrz, geforce3 64ddr ram, 700mb of harddrive space, the latest majorist a3d sound card with latest drivers, maxium instllation, directx8.1, and 512pci800mhrz of rdram.take my advice.buy the game, enjoy it.your welcome.I reccomend it. ... I ordered and downloaded this version of quicken and discovered that all the multimedia parts are not included!! Had I known this, I would have ordered the real product with cd-rom instead. We can't use the self help movies because of the missing cd-rom disk. The rest of the program works fine, but I felt that the description of the download would state that certain files are not included. I would also like to see a price break as well. sprovost

I had an early version of this product which I transferred to a new computer in February (had to reregister which it let me).It worked great.I have never had any prblems with it. We had to reprogram the computer in April and when I put Quicken back on it wanted me to register again. I tried to register and it finally just blocked me out of MY INFORMATAION ON MY SOFTWARE IN MY COMPUTER. I call their so called customer service. Seems that once this product gets so old they no longer support it and "for my own good" they will not let me run it. That their legal department said due to 2yk that they can not give me a register number to keep it going.I explained to them that it was running fine and that I did not need them to support it I just want them to let me acess my information. I went up three levels. They all said that I have to pay to upgrade.(I just missed a free download that they claim that they mailed the offer to their customers the information, mine must have been lost in the mail) That's always a good one don't you think. No one cares.I can not beleive that this is legal. They are holding my information for ransom. Is this softwarenapping or is it extorsion?I would be careful buying anything from this company. No telling what they will do for your own good. ...
