2-0 out of 5 stars who is johnny5dm?
I wish i could find "johnny5dm"s article on taking apart the mouse. I am having major problems with mine. the left button acts like i am constantly double clicking and the scrool wheel wont roll upwards. I do like the look and feel and he buttons are situated in nice places, but for 60 bucks (which was what i paid for it at the time) I wish it would have lasted me longer than a few years. I have ordered a new mouse to replace this one, but would still love to take it apart and work on it. SO, if anyone knows where "johnny5dm"s article is, i would greatly appreaciate it

3-0 out of 5 stars Slipshod Manufacturing!
I own two Intellimouse Explorer USB 3.0 mice. The first one I bought about 4 years ago.It lasted me under constant use (24/7 for 4 years) until about 3 days ago (I take extraordinarily good care of my computer equipment, though). This mouse has 5 buttons and a scrollwheel (the scrollwheel doubles as a middle mouse button). The two buttons on the side are generally only used (and are most _useful_) as back and forward buttons in a web browser.

If you purchase this product, here is what happens when the mouse starts going on the blink - you will get an advance warning when the back/forward buttons suddenly stop working (requiring a reboot to "fix") and then randomly the mouse fails. The OS refuses to power it back up until either the system is rebooted or the USB slot is switched. At first, you may think your system has been "hacked" somehow, but starting device manager (using the keyboard only) will show that there is a problem with the "Human Interface Device".

Now onto the slipshod manufacturing:When I bought my second mouse (6 months ago), I had to send it back TWO times to finally get a good, not-dead-on-arrival mouse.I managed to get an identical mouse to the first one the third time.I noticed something interesting about the third mouse - the side grey area matched the darker color of my first mouse. The other two mice had side-panels that were lighter in color. This could indicate a manufacturing change (IMO, for the worse). All three were identical _looking_ except for the color difference. However, the _feel_ of the lighter grey mice was VERY different - the side buttons were difficult to impossible to push to get them to click and yet they were "loosely connected" like my two good mice (that the best I can describe the feeling). Both of the lighter grey mice had installation problems and one worked for only a bit while the other didn't work at all.I believe the third one came from better manufacturing and may have been made about the same time my first mouse was (I guess it was never sold).I love this mouse - it is the only mouse I've ever felt _mostly_ comfortable holding...all others just cramp my hand.Someone here said it was too big, well this one still cramps my hand where my ring finger touches the top of my pinky finger - I'd love a mouse where I could evenly space my fingers across the entire surface. This mouse comes close to what I want in a mouse. However, with the recent degradation in quality of Microsoft hardware and my own personal experience, I'm beginning to look around for alternatives.I'm more than willing to spend $75 ($100 is pushing it) for a good mouse that fits _me_, but it has to last 20 years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mouse
I loved this mouse for about 3 months. And then it died. It's comfortable, attractive, responsive, and I loved the forward and back buttons. It was also my first mouse with a scroll wheel/button...nice.The optical aspect...wow.But these days that's nothing special (was gifted this in '00 but didn't use it much until '04).

I have two reservations, but they are important ones.First, it seems MS would be able to make a mouse that works flawlessly with its own OS.However, often the mouse would stop responding and I'd have to unplug and replug it, and restart my computer when that didn't work. The red power light would stay on and the activity light also responded, but it wasn't communicating.

Second, the thing doesn't work any more.I believe it's a weakness where the wire connects to the mouse body that caused it.I temporarily, insufficiently fixed it with electrical tape holding it in position, but that lasted about 2 weeks.I was certainly not rough enough with it over 3 months to warrant this; it's simply shoddy parts, design, or craftsmanship.

I won't say avoid this mouse at all costs. It's possible I got a dud. It's a great mouse except for the aforementioned problems.Still, I'm probably going with a Logitech cordless optical next time. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

VST's new graphite-colored 6 GB ultraslim FireWire hard drive features a small, lightweight, high-performance design while offering a color to match your G4 or limited-edition iMac or give any FireWire-equipped Macintosh that professional look. Ideal for those searching for a portable solution for their high storage needs, this IEEE 1394-compliant hard drive is bus powered, so no external power supply is needed. (However, an AC adapter is required when daisy-chaining more than two drives together or when using the drive with a PCI/CardBus card.) Plus, it has plug-and-play ease of use with no device IDs or termination, and it supports hot plug and unplug. This drive is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows 98 (second edition) FireWire-enabled computers. The drive sports dual 6-pin FireWire ports, so up to 63 devices can be daisy-chained together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable
Have used a different color version for two years now, bringing back and forth from home to work everyday. No problems whatsoever.Speed is about the same as other firewire drives

4-0 out of 5 stars Bring work home
This is the first VST product I've bought---since then, i've only bought VST brand HDs---not just at home, but also at work. Unlike it's brother, it does not rely on a AC adapter for power, which is a real plus when bringing work home. The data transfer is great for a few files, but don't expect speedy transfers when trying to copy huge directories (ie number of files) but in single (or smaller #) large files, the copy speed is great. The hard plastic shell has proven time and again that this is a durrable drive, designed to take more than just desktop abuse. With the two FireWire ports on the back, this drive can be daisy chained with other FireWire products. With great customer support (VST) and my past experiences with their products, I would recommend this drive for both the office and home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes too much noise
I have the 30 GB portable firewire hard drive. The hard drive is great because of the size which makes it easy to carry around. The issues I have with my drive is that it makes a buzzing sound when it is mounted. It's louder than any drive I've ever had and becomes annoying after a few minutes. I wrote VST support to verify that it's suppose to buzz and have not heard back from them for 2 days. I call their support line (not toll free) and I'm constantly on hold forever.
Also, I was disappointed with the color of the hard drive because all the pictures that are associated with the 'graphite' color looks gray. The actual color of the 'graphite' color is a light grayish blue. (It's less attractive then the gray, so don't get too hooked on the gray because you'll be pretty disappointed.) ... Read more

ViewSonic's VP181 is an 18-inch multifunctional flat-panel monitor incorporating digital, analog, and composite video. The VP181 LCD monitor provides ergonomic design with height, tilt, and swivel adjustments and offers creative flexibility with a thin 4-inch profile consuming less of your valuable desk surface. Vertical and horizontal adjustments of 160 degrees pivot to landscape and portrait modes for full-page viewing; this also lets multiple users see the screen without having to sit directly in front of the monitor. The composite-video input accepts a variety of applications including DVD, VCR, and video cameras with both RCA and S-Video connections.

The VP181 is ideal for designers and graphics professionals who want the benefits of a flat, large screen and for any office that demands flexibility and fine resolution from its monitors. It features a native resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 ( maximum flicker-free resolution of 1,600 x 1,200) combined with 235 units of brightness to deliver crisp images. A pair of 2-watt speakers built into the base delivers stereo sound for multimedia applications. The VP181 highlights practical features including wide viewing angles (in both landscape and portrait mode) with PerfectPortrait software, selectable text and image-smoothing filters, ViewMatch color controls, gamma adjustments for custom color response, and dual USB ports.

The ViewSonic VP181 (with 18.1 inches viewable) flat monitor ensures that your important data and images are precisely displayed by using SuperClear technology for crisp focus and vivid colors shown through antiglare glass. It's PC ready and Macintosh compatible (with the purchase of a separate adapter). Supported PC resolutions are VGA up to 1,600 x 1,200 noninterlaced. It supports Power Mac resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200. On-the-desk dimensions are approximately 17 by 18 by 9 inches, and the monitor weighs a sturdy 20 pounds.

The monitor, including the LCD screen, is covered by a three-year limited warranty on parts and labor.

1-0 out of 5 stars ViewSonic Monitor (THINK TWICE!)
If your thinking about buying a ViewSonic, THINK TWICE!
And when you droul over the wonderful quality of what is before
you, and the screen goes blank (during a dead line) remember how much it is going to cost you when you have to ship it back to Calafornia. and when you get your replacement don't be so sure
that it is any better, (or the replacement after it!) And if you think that's alright viewsonic would never send me a defective monitor, I have a wonderful warranty and that's all I need, THINK TWICE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Picture but some interface problems...
I am very happy with this monitor... so much so that I have one for home and for work. But while featuring an incredible picture (which is great for all my at home applications), I've been disappointed with some of the other features.

Beyond the lack of pivoting for W2K (not a problem at home, using W98-2ndEd) and the marginal speakers (fine for home), I bought this monitor because of the two video inputs. I am driving two computers at work and want to quickly switch back and forth between the two. Unfortunately the VP181 often seems to believe that the dormant computer is not providing any video signal and so when you try to toggle, it claims that there is no active signal and reverts to the original computer's input. Sort of frustrating. I have to jiggle the mouse of the dormant computer before toggling the VP, then it switches.

Also, while the switch interface on the base will not be a problem for the light user (who is driving only one computer), a single button to hit to switch both video and audio input from computer 1 to computer 2 would be nice. Currently, the user needs to switch the video and audio separately. Seven pushes of the buttons (preceeded by a jiggle of computer 2's mouse).

4-0 out of 5 stars Speakers and USB ports don't work in Digital mode
The speakers and USB ports don't work in Digital mode, but if you attach both digital and analog cables and the analog signal is live, then you can select the digital input and the analog signal will keep the base unit powered up which will allow the USB ports and speakers to work. However, the analog signal must be up.

If you have defective pixels viewsonic will say that they will replace it if the panel has 6 bad pixels, or 18 bad subpixels.Buyer beware.

    CodeWarrior Pro 6.0
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

It's impossible to sum up the slickness of CodeWarrior in a fewparagraphs, but it's fair to say that this package stays one step ahead of youas you're working on any software project. The Integrated Development Environment (IDE) itself hums along after a multi-CD install, and acts as your secretary, double-checker, project manager, and overall programming resource. The theme that we found apparent throughout our use of this huge package was its versatility. Many packages claim to offer flexibility in the numerous functions and features it can perform, but CodeWarrior backs up its claim with one of the smartest organization systems out there.

ThisCodeWarrior package tackles every element of a new software project, from thetechnical aspects to the project management and product release. Groupingtogether an editor, compiler, linker, and debugger--all through a common GUI, not as separate "bundled" features--offers complete integration of all components of your project. You'll find the interface familiar, although if you're new to the Metrowerks family you may have an initial phase consisting of just getting the hang of some of their terminology. But have little fear: you can easily polish off your understanding of how to get the most out of CodeWarrior through the free online courses offered at Metrowerks' Web site.

CodeWarrior's versatility shines through in the choicesavailable to you: you can pick your platform, your programming language, andyour target processor, all from one place. So if you're a fan of C, C++, orJava, and like to use Windows 95/NT, Mac OS, or Solaris, you can get numerous combinations out of the one application.

Bringing it all together--workinghard as the director of your musical software production, and never acting asthe restrictive, bossy stage mother--is the project window. It's a comfortableplace, with a strong resemblance to common file management systems like WindowsExplorer. Add and remove files, organize them into groups, reorganize them: theproject window keeps all of the relationships straight. And if your project is large, you can break it into subprojects for ease of use.

And maybe for youit's the little things: we particularly liked some of the customizable optionsthat really made the workspace more efficient and homey. You'll also find thatcool tools are at your fingertips, like the dead code stripper and a symbolicbrowser new to this edition.

Because this CodeWarrior package isn'tlanguage-specific, advanced users or those loyal to one language may find a few(but not many) areas that are slim on features. But if you're looking for anall-in-one package or are only interested in learning one IDE for all yourprogramming needs, this is the way to go. And in light of the fact thatMetrowerks is working hard on improving the product through numerous updates andrecently released support for the QNX and Linux platforms, CodeWarrior isincreasing in versatility as time goes by, rather than becoming archaic.--Emilie Dirks ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best choice for game development on the Mac
As editor of idevgames.com I feel that CodeWarrior is the best tool for application and game development on the Apple Macintosh. Metrowerks dropped PASCAL support but they will have a plug-in to handle PASCAL in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only game in town
This is the only real choice for Mac programming now, since Apple's free development tools don't support OS9. That's not a bad thing. CodeWarrior offers pretty much everything you need. PowerPlant is excellent for quick development, and the editor has plenty of useful features.

On the downside, the debugger doesn't work very well under OS X PB, and the printed documentation isn't included. But it's still a great program.

1-0 out of 5 stars No more Pascal?!
This would be a 5-star IDE if not for Metrowerks' decision to drop Pascal support. That fact was unbeknownst to me when I bought this upgrade, which is now worthless because of my investment in Pascal-based legacy products. Metrowerks was kind enough to send me version 4.0, however, and promises to re-introduce OS X Pascal support at a later date. ... Read more

    Norton Utilities 6.0
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM (15 November, 2000)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Whether you need to recover from a hard-drive disaster or you just wantto make sure your Mac is running as smoothly as the day you bought it, NortonUtilities 6.0 for the Mac contains all the tools you'll need. Installation ofNorton Utilities 6.0 is quick and easy. If you bought the software to recover adamaged hard drive, the CD acts as a start-up disc, allowing you to recover yourdrive without damaging any missing data. Even if your drive is apparentlyworking fine, it pays to run Norton Utilities 6.0 from the CD to first check forproblems before installation.

Norton Utilities 6.0 consists of five main components to cover almost anymaintenance you will ever need to do on your Mac. Norton Disk Doctor scans yourdisk to find and repair damaged files and applications, as well as detectingphysical damage to areas of the disk itself. With Disk Doctor set toautomatically repair any damage it finds, keeping your disks error free is asimple task.

Speed Disk optimizes your disk performance by reuniting files that have becomefragmented and then moving them around on the disk to improve its performance.FileSaver and UnErase effectively work together to protect your files bytracking files that you delete, and scanning your disk for damage at start-up orshutdown. If you happen to delete a file that you later need to recover, UnErasecan often recover the file in its entirety. Finally, Volume Recover works inconjunction with FileSaver to recover disks that are either so badly damagedthat they cannot be read, or that have been accidentally initialized.

Norton's reputation and long history of producing Mac disk utilities makesNorton Utilities 6.0 an essential addition to any Mac user's troubleshootinglibrary, and its ease of use and range of integrated functions is second tonone. --Daniel Jardine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Booting from CD

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X Life Saver!
For years Norton has made this easy-to-use utility collection for rescuing Macs in distress, and with version 6.0 they won't let you down. After playing with Mac OS X for a few weeks I added some old corrupt files to my computer and couldn't reboot. At first I had my doubts, but Norton came through and saved the day! Owning a copy of this program is the best insurance purchase for your Macintosh, it's like having your own IT Dept. ready to help you around the clock. Previous owners of the program will like the fact that it hasn't changed that much and yet has kept up with the times. 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
The original CD-ROM Riven I gave a 4/5, and also a 4/5 for the Playstation version mainly due to the disc swapping. But the DVD-ROM version is a relief. Now you can enjoy this great adventure without switching discs every few minutes which makes it feel more realistic in my opinion. This is a great game. I recommend it to any video-gamer who is up for a new, unique, challenge.

4-0 out of 5 stars very fun, VERY DIFFICULT
I enjoyed Riven very much. It wasn't a game that you got through in a single afternoon, and it keeps you challenged, but with adequate rewards for defeating puzzles. It is nice that you can wander and choose your puzzles at the beginning. Be warned, however, the game gets VERY DIFFICULT when you get to the fire marbles, and at this point, figuring out the location and the color of the marbles, the game requires Albert Einstein IQ, but you can handle it....right? The only dissapointment that I experienced was that of capturing Ghen. When I opened the book, I had expected something to the effect of: NO! How could you do this to me! Instead, you merely see dunny swirling around. No big deal, but slightly dissapointing. If you are looking for a clean, challenging game that will keep you busy for a long, long time, look no further. Riven is the game for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best games I've ever played!
Riven is a wonderful computer game- the sequel to the phenomenal Myst and the prequel to the extremely wonderful Myst: Exile. It takes a while to finish it, but it's worth it. I would recommend buying a walkthrough book or if you really wanted to figure it out on you own, get a writing pad and draw EVERYTHING that you see. It'll come in handy. Editorial Review

Apple's OS X is the biggest leap forward in the Mac experience since the shift to color, but because it is a richer, deeper, and more complex operating system than any previous version, the problems associated with it are proportionally more difficult. The Mac OS X Black Book introduces the new OS X user to the interface, tools, and underlying UNIX core at the heart of this old and new operating system, but more importantly, it illustrates how to troubleshoot many of the common problems that new users are likely to find themselves up against.

The book covers almost everything the OS X newbie needs to know, including installation, tweaking the system for improved performance, compatibility with pre-OS X apps (Classic mode) as well as non-Mac networks, connecting to the Internet, printing, and troubleshooting.

The authors never shy away from the fact that OS X is an operating system based on UNIX, and nearly every chapter has at least some reference to the non-Mac underlying structure. We see this as early as chapter 2, where we are told we can view the text version of the startup process as the Mac boots up by holding down CMD+V. In the chapter covering multiple users, we learn about permissions and the importance of the "Root" account. And we even have an appendix that covers using Terminal and UNIX shell commands.

Does all this mean you need to learn UNIX to use OS X? Not at all. But problems do arise from time to time where it can't be avoided. During those times, it's nice to have a "Black Book" on hand to get you through the rough spots. Good illustrations, a clean design, and an approachable written style make this book one of the more valuable OS X references available. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Power Users
I find the book informative and well written, but this is not for power users. It contains beginner information and how to use popular 3rd party utilities. The book lacks depth, and Unix shell is in an appendix. If you are looking for a book to explore the unix side of Mac OS X, look elsewhere. If you are looking on how to set up your user environment and are looking for some possible shareware or 3rd party utilities to enhance your use of OS X, then this is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Copland Review Very Informative
I know why many of the reviewers gave the book only one or two stars. They were disappointed in that it had nothing to do with the actual product MacOS 8, but instead deals with the vaporware product also known asCopland.

As far as it's review of Copland is concerned it is a veryinteresting book.I wish there was some more detail in regards to some ofthe low level stuff (such as task scheduling etc.).The book howeverprovided a very interesting view of how Apple was going to try andtransition between it's then current OS and a new "modern" OS. The level of detail is high enough to be informative, yet technical enoughto provide potential developers with some understanding of how to(re)design their software to work under MacOS 8 Copland.

My hats off tothe author, even though it turned out to be a waist of paper from aproductivity standpoint.

4-0 out of 5 stars For what is here ... the author deserves much respect ...
I represent a Mac User who, one year ago, would have never used a Mac ... but I'm working a Help Desk job, and roughly 10% of my traffic is a Mac ... this book has been an indespensible Godsend !!Sure, the else-metioned confusion with Copland isa bane for this title, what IS here is much appreciated !!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this, unless looking for historical information.
This book is based on Copland, the planned 'next generation' operating system that was scrapped in late 1996 or early 1997. It has nothing to do with the Mac OS 8.0, which was released in '97. Its an entirely different product.

If you are interested in what -could have been- had Copland not been scrapped, this is the book. ... Read more

    Kerbango 100E Internet Radio
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Kerbango 100E is the first stand-alone Internet radio device.Since you won't be using your computer to listen to online radio, you won't haveto deal with software conflicts or competition for computing resources. Justconnect to the Web and tune into thousands of audio streams from around theglobe--from the latest news in Australia to a cricket match in New Delhi toBBC's Radio 1 in London.

There are no service fees associated with listening to online radio stations. The Kerbango is based on the Real Networks G2 Player, and it plays RealAudio G2, 5.0, 4.0, and 3.0 streams as well as streaming MP3. However, you will need a broadband connection such as DSL, cable modem, or ISDN (dial-up connections are not supported). Additionally, the Kerbango uses an Ethernet connection, requiring a PC network or cable modem.

(If you don't have a broadband connection, ask your current Internet serviceprovider about upgrading. If you already have a broadband connection, it isrecommended that you connect the Kerbango by using a cable/DSL router. Note thatsome ISPs may require the purchase of an additional IP address or otherservices.)

Once you've connected to the Internet, the Kerbango makes it easy to discovernew radio stations. Just use the tuning knob as you would on a regular radio toselect a category of audio stream. If you choose the music category, you'll findsuch listings as hard rock, classical, country, jazz, and then be able to choosefrom individual stations within each listing. And since your broadbandconnection is always on, the Kerbango can be left connected to the Internet allthe time without affecting your ability to make or receive telephone calls.

The Kerbango tuner stays up to date with the latest stations, newest music, andcurrent events by communicating with the Kerbango Tuning Service every timeyou're connected. KTS is a sophisticated database that stores information aboutall the stations that Kerbango finds on the Internet. Once a station is added tothe KTS list of available stations, an automated program called a StreamBotcontinually checks for transmission quality and reliability. This information isdisplayed on the Kerbango, indicating a station's expected signal quality beforeyou tune it in.

The 100E features two full-range ducted stereo speakers with 2 watts perchannel. It also includes a built-in antenna for receiving AM/FM broadcasts, aclock that's updated automatically when connected to the Internet, and an alarmfunction that can change stations at preset times (such as when waking up in themorning). The device runs on Motorola DigitalDNA technology, with a 32-bitprocessor running at 81 MHz, 16 MB SDRAM, 8 MB of flash memory, and 4 MB of ROM.It includes an Ethernet RJ-45 (10Base-T) input and outputs for stereo audiolines and headphones.

You can try out the extensive KTS library of online radio stations by visitingthe Kerbango site (www.kerbango.com) and connecting to a station using eitherRealPlayer or Windows Media Player. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh well......
Kebango were bought by 3COM a while back. Due to the rapid slowdown in high tech 3COM decided to axe their entire personal products divison which includes the Kerbango. Ergo the Kerbango won't be coming to market anytime soon. Perhaps someone will buy the technology from 3COM perhaps not. But don't place an order for one until this all gets sorted out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kerbango is cancelled
Too bad, 3Com as owner of Kerbango announced the end of some products of its internet appliance division. this means Kerbango is dead as well. and maybe of the whole division. for an article about this, see: http://yahoofin.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-5207113.html

3-0 out of 5 stars Will it ever be available?
I have been waiting to buy one of these for over a year.I recently saw the unit at a trade show, buy the reps. were clueless as to when it will be available, or what the delay has been. The unit was much smaller and of cheaper construction (a lot of plastic) than I had imagined from the picture. Some of the buttons are a bit "gimmicy", if that is a word. They have the right idea, but it looks like there is much room for improvement. =I will probably still buy one if they ever actually sell them.Until then, I will continue to use the Sonic Box IM tuner, which does a respectable job of remote tuning, but requires the pc to stay on. ... Apple 10 GB 2nd Generation iPod M8709LL/A
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Packing 2,000 songs and a 10-hour battery into a stunning 6.5-ounce package, the Apple iPod is the smallest hard drive-based MP3 player available, about the size of a deck of cards. Just plug it into your Mac and all your iTunes songs and playlists are automatically downloaded into iPod at blazing FireWire speed.

The 10 GB hard drive stores up to 2,000 MP3 song files (at 160 Kbps encoding rate) and also doubles as disk storage for applications and other files. A high-output (60-mW) amplifier provides CD-quality sound with a wide dynamic range, from deep, pulse-pounding bass to sharp, crystal-clear highs.

In addition to its 10 GB hard drive, iPod has a 32 MB memory cache. The cache is made up of solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts, so it's not affected by movement of the device. Skip protection on the iPod works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache.

The iPod has a large, high-quality liquid crystal display (LCD) for viewing up to six lines of text. And the LCD features a white-light-emitting diode (LED) backlight for clear visibility in low-light situations--indoors or outdoors. Pocket-size and just 6.5 ounces, it weighs appreciably less than the stack of CDs it can store music from.

Featuring Apple's award-winning iTunes 2 software, the iPod can synchronize with newly added music files and playlists. Simply plug the iPod back into your Mac and the changes are automatically updated in seconds. And with iTunes 2, you can rip MP3s, create playlists, and burn custom CDs all from one simple interface.

Its rechargeable lithium battery is charged using the FireWire cable when connected to your Mac. You can also recharge the iPod using the included FireWire cable and AC adapter when you're on the go.

The iPod supports MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR), WAV, and AIFF files, and is firmware upgradable. To use the iPod with your Mac you'll need a FireWire port and you must be running either Mac OS 9.2.1 (or later) or Mac OS X v10.1 (or later). The iPod is not compatible with Windows operating systems.

It comes with earbud-style headphones, a FireWire cable, power adapter, and CD-ROM with iTunes 2. It's backed by a 90-day limited warranty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple 10 GB Second Generation iPod
This is one of the best generation of iPods I have ever seen. It is what people now consider the "old" iPod even though it's really only 2 or 3 years old. 10 gigabytes holds about 2,000 songs at near CD-Quality. At 10 hours of battery life you can enjoy music on the road or on a plane ride. This is pretty thin especially for a 2nd-Generation iPod. It is .78" in depth while the new 4th-Generation is .57. The battery life in the new generation is 12 hours so there is only 2 hours in difference. This iPod has a scroll wheel. It's much better and not mechanical like the first generation. It connects either through FireWire or FireWire 400. It's mostly metal at the top and there is a cover for the connectivity ports, unlike the first-generation. There was a 10GB and 20GB version for Mac or Windows. Now all the iPods can be compatible with Mac and Windows. It comes with MusicMatch Jukebox as it's software which isn't too bad but iTunes is much better. What is included in the package is the iPod, case, remote control, connectivity wires, power adapter, and software. It costed me around $399.99 which is extremely expensive but back then MP3 Players were still pretty new. It's 6.5 ounces which isn't too bad but is still kind of heavy. You should look into the iPod but not this one. Look into the new fourth generation iPod or any kind of iPod you want. But this 2nd Generation iPod is one of the best iPods in the 4th generation collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is!
This is the best!Superior audio quality.Excellent battery life (8-10 hours).Super fast transfer using Firewire.Very intuitive and easy to use menus.Great feature set including contact lists, calendar, games and more. If you know a music lover, this would make a great gift!I take this thing everywhere.I would recommend the Sennheiser PX 100 headphones (available on Amazon for under 40 dollars) as a must have accessory for this.I also like the ability to use this as a firewire hard drive which allows backup of important files from my hard drive. It costs more than the competition but is worth EVERY bit of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get any other mp3 player and you will regret it
I bought mine a little less than a year ago and it has been great since day one.It is compact, can be used as an emergency startup disk for Macintosh computers, and the controls makes navigation a piece of cake.I also have a Nomad Jukebox and a friend at work has the Archos Jukebox...I can't believe how archaic those things are, if you want to navigate to a certain song it will take you minutes.WIth my iPod and the scroll wheel, it takes no time to find what you want. The sound is crystal, the battery usage is amazing, it still cranks out 8-10 hours after all this time.My biggest gripe was that there were no battery replacements offered, but now for $ you can get a new battery...so all in all I have yet to find a flaw on this puppy. The firewire transfer of songs is simply mindblowing.Buy any other mp3 player and you will regret it even more now that you have just read this :) ...
