Namco Museum Average Customer Review: Video Game (11 June, 2001) list price: $29.99 -- our price: $17.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Nothing lends itself better to portable gaming than the arcadeclassics. They're addictive, replayable, and fun--plus it's nice not tohave to pump endless streams of quarters into them. That's what makesNamco Museum such a must-have title for the Game Boy Advancesystem. People too young, or too impatient, to enjoy a good coin-op hadbetter stop reading now. Like the PlayStation and N64 versions, Namco has packed a few of itsbest games onto the cartridge. For the GBA we get only five titles(four are listed on the front of the box, but Galaxian is alsoincluded). We have two versions of Ms. Pac-Man (one that showsthe whole maze but is dreadfully small, and another that scrolls),Galaga, Pole Position, and Dig Dug. They arelovingly ported, complete with all the music and sound effects intact. What we don't get is the amusing Museum portion and trivia found onother versions. Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga are the real winners here. Bothare perfect renditions complete with all the extras (music, colors, sound effects, and bonus stages/cartoons). The controls on these twoare also perfect. Pole Position is amusing, but features twitchycontrols and pales in comparison to other GBA racing games.Galaxian, on the surface, seems the same as its sequel,Galaga, but it isn't. The fire rate is much slower, so the paceof the game is different. Galaga is certainly better, butGalaxian is a nice addition regardless. Dig Dug is aclassic, pure and simple, and it still plays well. It rounds out thecollection nicely. Arcade fans, especially those who used to line up (or line theirquarters on the machine) to play these games, will be very pleased withNamco Museum. Those unimpressed with retro gaming probably won'tbe converted. However, here's hoping we see more arcade classics in thefuture, because I can't think of a better platform for these than theGame Boy Advance. --Andrew S. Bub Pros:

Tony Hawk 2 Average Customer Review: Video Game (14 June, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 doesn't look or play quite likeits other incarnations, but the amount of death-defying--or seriousinjury-defying--tricks you can pull off, and the wild level design, graphics, and responsive controls all work amazingly well for thehandheld. With an overhead isometric view and its use of only four buttons, Hawkvets will need to readjust their attacks. Still, we were amazed by howmany tricks have been crammed into this cartridge. For the most part, the visuals are clear and detailed and the skaters are incredibly wellanimated. Gameplay hasn't changed much. Initially, there are six levels available(more are unlocked as rewards). After picking a skater, you mustperform tricks and locate items to earn loot for buying new gear, whichwill enable you to improve your skater's stats and continue to the nextskate park. The game is sadly without some of the cooler features ofthe big consoles. For example, you cannot create parks or skaters, andmultiplay is sorely missed. The feeling of accomplishment one gets when perfectly landing a stuntis just as satisfying on the GBA as it is on the PS One and Dreamcastversions. Even folks who don't like skateboarding games will thinkTony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a great (and addictive) achievementfor the handheld platform. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon Average Customer Review: Video Game (08 June, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review One of the best side-scrolling game franchises makes a successful debuton the Game Boy Advance in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. This timearound you follow the adventures of Nathan Graves as he attempts to stop therecently resurrected Dracula. In the fine tradition of Castlevania vampirehunters, Graves carries a whip as his primary weapon, and will soon discover thetraditional secondary weapons of holy water, dagger, boomerang, time freeze, andmore. New to the series is the dual set-up system (DSS), which allows you to use20 cards (randomly found) for up to 80 power-ups. The game plays like a side-scrolling classic without seeming too dated. Playerstraipse around a nonlinear dungeon, defeat monsters, and unlock new parts of thedungeon, often through the use of new abilities. It's similar to the excellentCastlevania: Symphony of the Night for the PlayStation, with the obviousaural limitations of a cartridge-based handheld system. Unfortunately, the game's dark graphics are difficult to see on the Game BoyAdvance's fickle screen. Long sessions require consistent overhead lighting, sothis isn't the ideal game for travel. The animations are also lacking, makingcharacter movement appear jerky. Despite these graphics shortcomings, thisside-scrolling wonder makes a fine addition to your GBA library. --Raymond M.Padilla Pros:

Enthralled with my newest Britney purchase (being a big Brit fan myself), I instantly unwrapped it and began to play. This game is somewhat like DDR, and doesn't get too complex until the last three songs of the practice stage (where you get to mix arrows with the a and b buttons).Concert stages are pretty decent and good for a little complexity. The concept of this game is good, that's why DDR is such a huge hit, the game concept. However, the actual game play is not for those are not big fans of Britney or those who mind playing some boring rounds in order to score pics, puzzles and a video clip of Ms. Spears. The worst part about this game has to be that it doesn't save - you have to write down passwords. The great part about this game is that even though you have to write down passwords, you really don't have to write them down because it is quick and easy to pass most of the first rounds, no sweat.

PacMan Collection Average Customer Review: Video Game (13 July, 2001) list price: $29.99 -- our price: $17.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you're still suffering the lingering effects of Pac-Man fever, you'llbe excited to hear that Namco's Pac-Man Collection repackages theinfectious original with three other Pac-Man-themed games in a new anthology forthe Game Boy Advance. Pac-Man Collection contains the original Pac-Man, plusPac-Attack, PacMania 3D, and the never-before-seen-out-of-the-arcadePac-Man Arrangement game. Pac-Man plays like you remember, andlike Namco Museums's picture perfect re-creation of Ms. Pac-Man,it features spot-on control, graphics, cartoon cutscenes, sound effects, and, best of all, music from the coin-op (who can forget that opening theme?). Assuch, it's easily the best of this collection. PacMania 3D is basically a 3-D version of the original, and is just aboutas uninspired now as when it came out. Pac-Attack is a cool variation onsuch puzzlers as Tetris and Columns, and as such it's perfect forhandheld gaming. Pac-Man Arrangement is an odd little game that playsmuch like the original but adds weird power-ups that, for example, make yougigantic. Because Pac-Man Collection is a perfectly emulated package, there isn'tmuch to gripe about, save that Ms. Pac-Man is a far, far better game thanthe original, and you'll have to shell out more money if you want that one. Butfor retro gamers on the go who also want to track down ghosts and eat powerpills, this package is sure to sate your hunger. --Andrew S. Bub Pros:

Greatest Arcade Hits Average Customer Review: Video Game (22 November, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This title offers four Midway arcade classics for one price. The games are as you remember them: In Joust, you ride a flying ostrich and try to defeat other mounted knights by bumping them from above. Clear the screen of enemies, then move on to faster and tougher enemies. In Robotron, you run around on a playing field attempting to clear the screen of evil enemy Robotrons, all the while trying to save the last human family. Defender has you trying to eliminate all the alien forces in each stage while defending the lives of the humans scattered across the surface. In Sinistar, you battle unseen enemy drones who are building the ultimate evil--the Sinistar. Sinistar can only be stopped by bombs you make out of space crystals. ... Read more Reviews (10)

Ready 2 Rumble 2 Average Customer Review: Video Game (08 June, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 is the first GBA fightinggame, and that's a lot of weight to carry on one's muscular andwell-rounded shoulders. But Midway's baby has already been a hit on severalsystems; it's merged boxing with hilarity and featured wild characterssuch as Afro Thunder, Mama Tua, and more--all outfitted with powermoves and special taunts. The GBA version looks good. It features loads of color, and everythingfrom the taunts to Michael Buffer's famous "Lets get ready to rumble"tagline is intact. Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't. Ready toRumble 2 for the GBA is a 2-D fighting game, not a 3-D title likethe earlier versions. You can move forward and backward, block, andpunch. Move while punching and deliver an uppercut or a short jab. There's almost no sense of damage as you hit these poorly animatedfoes, and this takes all the personality out of the game. There are 11 characters total, some favorites from the original gamesand two new unlockable ones, including Michael Buffer as Rumble Man(yawn) and... Michael Jackson? There are four modes of play: arcadestyle, championship, training, and survival (where you've got to fighteach opponent until you go down flat). You can create your own boxer ifyou like, and participate in a few training rituals, such as usingrumble pads, lifting weights, and hitting the speed bag. What Ready to Rumble 2 amounts to is a perfectly good, andgreat-looking, Game Boy Color game, but it doesn't do justice toboxing. It isn't nearly as good as Ready to Rumble on otherplatforms, and it just doesn't fit in with the other, mostly fantastic,GBA launch titles. --Andrew S. Bub Pros:

The Three Stooges Average Customer Review: Video Game (01 April, 2002) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (13)
This GBA cartridge is an exact port of that old game. You play the part of Moe, Larry, and Curly as they try to raise money to save an orphange. Money is earned by playing a series of mini-games. For the most part, the game play is as easy as the older versions except for the oyster eating contest. That part is much easier with a mouse than a control pad, but I still played it decently on my GBA. I love seeing these older games re-released for new systems. The cartridge should hold up much better than my diskettes. Plus, you don't have to worry about system requirements. I don't know what the market for these retro games is like, but I'd like to see more old computer games released like this one. Most of my old favorites would need a keyboard so a GBA version would be unlikely (like the old Sierra Space Quest, King's Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry series), but it might be possible for a console. ...
