    Editorial Review

Seaman is quite possibly the weirdest video game to everbe released. It's also one of the most incredibly original titles in avery long time. And if you don't believe me, just ask the frisky Seaman,a fish/reptile with a human face--it isn't shy.

According to legend, this strange creature is the discovery of scientistJean Paul Gasse. The weird-looking beast was documented to have analmost grotesque look about it, as it had the body of a reptile and theface of a man. Yet it was able to talk and reason with the doctor aswell as your average human. And while the good doctor was laughed intoobscurity after trying to explain his discovery, you have theopportunity to raise a Seaman from egg to its fishlike state and beyond.

Not only must you keep Seaman well fed and warm, you'll find thatconversation (via the included microphone) with Seaman is a must. Thescaly inquisitor will probe into your personal life by asking about yourage, marital status, and favorite music, among other things. Also, iftreated well this creature will spew its (usually sarcastic) rantings onpop culture, the Internet, and even reality itself. There's even a touchof sexual innuendo that may raise a few eyebrows. I doubt your goldfishever did that.

The speech recognition is far from perfect, but there's no doubt thatthe gimmick almost always causes a smile when you realize how longyou've been conversing with a fish and just how many words it doesrespond to. The simplistic graphics often make Seaman look like he'sswimming in space rather than in a huge tank, but this game makes noclaim to break new ground in graphics--it's the speech recognition thatis most noteworthy. Star Trek veteran Leonard Nimoy acts asnarrator, bringing all of the emotion of Spock (read: none) to hisperformance--yet somehow it works.

Since the Seaman can starve or freeze if not tended to regularly(raising this thing will take weeks), it might be a good idea to investin another Visual Memory Unit to store the status of Seaman's habitatand your performance.

It's hard to say just how much "game" is actually in this title. Rather,Seaman offers an interesting life journey through birth, growth, death, rebirth, and change. Seaman offers a unique Dreamcastexperience that is both disturbing and fascinating. --Mark Brooks

    Pros:

    • A very ugly fish that talks--how cool is that?
    • Seaman can recognize quite a surprising number of words with theincluded microphone, and he talks back
    • Easy to play
    • Sarcastic wit (read: very American) and humor can be good for a fewlaughs
    Cons:
    • Speech recognition is inconsistent (often words are completelymisunderstood)
    • Graphics are suitably simplistic but never really deliver thefeeling that Seaman is swimming in water
    • Probably doesn't taste good with chips

5-0 out of 5 stars I love you Seaman
Like others here have already said- this game isn't for everyone. In fact, it's only for a select few gamers- the kind that are looking for new and strange things. It's cool that Sega never cares about money, and is always the one company we can count on for innovation. It's just too bad that they never get the credit they deserve. Sega's always been ahead of their time, as we saw with the Dreamcast.

Anyway, I love this "game". When I first got it when it came out, I wasn't really sure what to expect. You actually do take on the role of a scientist, creating life before your very eyes. You start out with an empty tank, and an egg + some food pellets in your inventory. Place the egg in the tank, and set the heat to 19.9 (under 20 at least), and the oxygen all the way up. After a few minutes, the egg hatches, and you get mushroomers. Soon after, the natilus starts moving, and eats your mushroomers. Make sure that it leaves at least one alive. Try tapping on the glass away from the natilus to draw the mushroomer(s) closer to you. After a few minutes, the natilus comes out of its shell and dies. Now, you have Seamen.

Yeah, I bet that sounds boring to you. For the first 2-3 days, you teach Seaman small words (like "hello", "afternoon", "seaman", etc.), but the baby Seamen start killing eachother, and you're left with two. As they grow up, their voices become very deep and cool. Seaman is quite the scholar. He'll ask you questions about your life and what you like whenever you talk to him. Of course, you can only put in 15 hours of gameplay a day, and you'll be doing just fine...as your talk sessions don't last that long. They're more of a Q&A. But that's ok, I enjoyed the responses Seaman gave me. When I told him my birthday, he told me that I share it with Elizabeth Hurley and a few other cool celebrities. Thanks Seaman!

The voice recognition isn't as bad as people say. As long as you speak clearly and not too fast, Seaman should be able to understand most of the things you say to him. Please give Seaman a chance, he's a good guy. And you'll be sad to let him go in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars seaman is great!
this game is really fun. it's kinda like a sim mixed with a giga pet. you feed it , raise it, take care of it, and of course, talk to it. yes, some of the time the words are missunderstood, but if you talk loud and clearly enough, it's just fine.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Great the First Few Times......... (3.5 stars)
....but after you've beat it and played it a couple times, it gets really old very quickly. But, this game is %100 original!A very unique and cool concept.I just think more could've been done to keep the replay value up a bit.

    The graphics:Amazing
    The sound:Very good
    Concept:Out of this world!
Replay Value: Gets boring after you play it enough

So the only reason why I'm giving this 3.5 stars instead of 4 is because, let's face it, it can get old very quickly.Plus, you have to have A LOT of free time to keep him alive!!!I used to have that time in high school, but now starting my second semester at college, well.....time isn't as free any more.

It's a game that should be checked out, though.Just be warned, you might get bored with it real quick.I thought it was the greatest game at first, but then it seemed like nothing new happens.Once you beat it, that's it.Replay value is the only major flaw with the game. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT THE TELETUBBIES!!!
What kind of game is this? Oh sure, I would TOTALLY get it if it were like, shoot the teletubbies, or something, but it's not. What is so educational about the teletubbies anyway? All they do is go around and say EH-OH! EH-OH! EH-OH! What the hell does that mean? And what's up with that sun? it's like thier dictator or something!! MY POINT: FEAR THE TELETUBBIES! SHOOT ANY ONE YOU SEE! TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE THEM EXTINCT!!!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?Save your $$.
I have the PC version and the PS2 version, they are the same. Both are confusing, difficult to navigate, and very, very slow moving. As popular as these Teletubbies are, one would think someone would have put a bit more effort into designing these programs. Total waste of time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
I am thoroughly unimpressed with the things that you are allowed to do with the Teletubby characters in this game. However, my 2-year-old son loves Teletubbies, and he doesn't care that the graphics are grainy and there's not that many activities. His favorite ones are to make tubby toast pop out from the toaster, the train, and finding friends behind the trees. He has noticed that he can't walk to the place where the Teletubbies sleep, and even adults have trouble leaving an activity.I really wish they would put out a better Teletubbies game than this one, but in the meantime, this is it folks. ... It's not the best game ever, yet it's not the worst, and it's extremely cute. I love designing your cat's color, and the room they play in. Most of the time it is fun, but after a while, a few hours perhaps, you might get bored. I believe it is a great game otherwise, packed with love! Turn your GB on, and voila! A cat lover's dream come true!

i don't have catz, but i'm getting it soon!!! It sounds really fun. Fortunately, i'm not the person to like fighting action-packed GB games. i love animals more than anything, and i can probably make my dream cat with this!!!!The only bummer is there are only 3 different cats to choose from. I can't wait to get this, though, and i'm going to write a review when i have it, (in a few days), and share my thoughts when i have the actual game!!!!! ... Read more

Pool sharks will enjoy the real-world physics of Billiards: Real Pool, as well as the ability to see every angle of the setup with complete 360-degree views. Beginners can use optic guidelines to help set up the shots. The 12 game modes include basic, eight ball, nine ball, rotation, carom, and such nontraditional pool games as five-nine and "bowliards." Tournament mode allows players to match skills with eight computer opponents--each with unique strengths and weaknesses. The 25 puzzle games take place on uniquely shaped tables, such as cloverleaf, star, triangle, and an H-shaped table. Players will have a specific number of shots in which to knock in a certain amount of "hit" balls on tables featuring obstacles. Billiards: Real Pool has competitive action for one to two players, and even allows them to choose their in-game music from the "jukebox." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Are the Tiles Supposed To Be This Smasll?
I am hopelessly addicted to Mahjongg. It is one of my favorite games, both on my PC and on a beautiful board with my friends. I had a mahjongg game for my PC that my youngest loved to rearrange the format of the tiles and forever lost the classic mode (my favorite). So I sent off for this version.

My first words were, "are the tiles supposed to be this small"? I am 47 and 30 minutes of this game will ruin my eyes for the rest of the evening.

It does have Chinese and Egyptian tiles, which are pretty neat, but who can see them?I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS GAME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gravity Tile Addict Speaks
OK-the tiles are lovely in either the Egyptian or Chinese versions and the graphics are great(fireworks, sandstorms, flowers and seasons)and you can make your own layouts or choose from a bazillion layouts, for mahjongsolitare. Memory tiles basically "Concentration" but again youhave those lovely graphics. And then you have Gravity Tiles-instantaddiction. and it keeps changing because you change the way you play thegame, and because you can choose from 3 different settings-from 3 to 5different colors of tiles. Very enjoyable.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Jordan's Pick
I believe that the Mahjong tile game is the best of it's kind! It not only lets your mind work and figure out what tiles are where and what match. It also gives very good hand and eye coordination, because theclock is on you once you start and if you make a mistake it just might costyou the game.So be careful when playing this well designed game ofconcentration. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good except for one little thing
I actually think this game plays pretty well, but I have it loaded on an ibook and the card images are so small that I have a hard time reading them. Other than that, not a bad deal. There's a nice range of games and of difficulty. I think this game is well worth the money.

    3-0 out of 5 stars I Disagree!
The only visible reviewer did not think this a good program. They said itdid everything for you.Sure! If you don't TURN OFF the Auto Play! It'snot the best or the most complete Solitare program available, I haveseveral "larger-fuller" ones myself, but this compact program isvery well done for the money.I find I gravitate to it more frequentlythan the more "exotic" programs of Solitare that I also haveinstalled. It looks and plays very well for the money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do not waste your money
I bought this game because I love to play the different types of solitare.I did not like this program because it did all the work for you. When there was a card that could be moved it did it automatically so yourparticipation in the game was minimal.Unless you enjoy watching thecomputer play by itself I would highly discourage you from buying thisproduct. ... Legend of Lotus Spring (Jewel Case)
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars
    Software

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Enter a world of mystic serenity and surpassing beauty in search of the ending to a tragic romance in The Legend of Lotus Spring. This first-person role-playing game in the style of Myst and Amerzone takes players on a tour through a lost archaeological treasure--China's Garden of Perfect Brightness--which was burned by the British and French during the 1860 Opium War. As you visit the stunningly rendered structures, courtyards, and pools within the garden, you are in search of Lotus Spring, a lover of the emperor Xian Feng. Imprisoned in the garden by the jealous Dowager Empress, Lotus Spring has now disappeared. Fearing for his lover's life, Xian Feng has returned to the garden to discover her fate.

Gameplay in The Legend of Lotus Spring is simple and straightforward, to the extent that it may seem too straightforward for seasoned gamers. The various scenes within the Garden of Perfect Brightness are littered with objects and interactive hot spots. By exploring the garden and trying out the objects, players trigger animations that tell the story of Lotus Spring's doomed romance. Each discovery also fills out Lotus Spring's dream diary, providing more information about the missing woman's past. However, the mystery is often less than intriguing when compared to the garden itself. Using paintings, photographs, and the original construction plans, the destroyed garden has risen--gloriously--from its ashes. It is easy to forget that there is any point to the game beyond examining the treasures of each room. It is unfortunate that the game does not include more hard information on the garden or the architectural principles behind it. But even without this information, the garden offers infinite fascinations and a distinct sense of being haunted.

Designed to appeal primarily to women, The Legend of Lotus Spring is a love story wrapped in a mystery. It is moody, romantic, and musical--a different sort of journey from most games of its type, and one that lovers of fine architecture and storytelling will find rewarding. --Alyx Dellamonica ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Stinky Flower
Game produced to appeal to a specific audience - namely teenage girls with nothing better to do with their time. That is fine, and may be benificial as the monotany may force them outside, away from their monitors.

Repetitious and tedious.Buy if watching grass grow adds excitement to your life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good graphics, but boring.
Lotus Spring has very nicely done graphics and intricate details. However, there's virtually no plot to the game.Right from the beginning I was already confused as to what exactly the point of the story would be.You end up going around beautiful scenaries looking for really pointless and boring poems.I made myself finish the game because I didn't want to waste my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lotus Spring, how does your garden grow?
"The Legend of Lotus Spring" is the first game from Women Wise, a feminist group dedicated to producing quality games that appeal to a female gaming audience. "Lotus Spring" is more of an interactive exploration than a game per se: there are really no puzzles, no mazes, and no missions other than exploring the now-extinct Garden of Perfect Brightness in 19th century China. You play as Emperor Xian Feng and are searching for your love, the concubine HeHanQu, who, as a Han woman, was forbidden from marrying the Emperor, and the jealousy of the Dowager Empress CiXi proves formidable as she sends HeHanQu, or Lotus Spring, to an island in the middle of the garden. But Lotus Spring has disappeared and now you must find her....

"Lotus Spring" is filled with history and touches of now-vanished imperial China under the Qing dynasty. As you explore the many sights and locations in the Garden of Perfect Brightness you will stumble upon shared moments between the Emperor and Lotus Spring, many of which are poignant. Although not essential to winning the game, there are several exploration-type activities which are quite fun, including trying out various traditional Chinese musical instruments, brush painting, and more. Along the way you run across various animals and insects, although, much like Myst, there are no other people to interact with. The style is very similar to Myst, in a first-person point-and-click slideshow.

      The pros:
+ Beautiful graphics that bring imperial China to life: intricate jade sculptures, bonsai, Chinese silks and dresses, dim sum picnic lunches, ancient musical instruments...
+ The originality and depth of the story
      + A touching love story
+ Exploring the reconstructed garden and the numerous pavilions, temples, shrines, etc. as well as the garden itself
+ Access to the lovers' shared dreams and entries in a diary

The only gripes that I have with "Lotus Spring" are:
      - The music is too repetitive
      - The doll cursor is annoyingly cute and overly large
      - The pace may be too slow for seasoned gamers

Women Wise has also commissioned a novella based upon the real historical events that inspired "Lotus Spring" ... Read more

      Myst: Masterpiece Edition

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

      Editorial Review

You haven't forgotten Myst, have you? It's time for a new look, and the Myst Masterpiece Edition won't disappoint. Both newcomers and old hands will appreciate the improved graphics and sounds in this imaginative and popular game.

For those who haven't heard, Myst is an interactive game world set on a lush island that poses problems to solve; as you learn more about the world you're in, more locations open up to you, and ultimately, exploration becomes an end in itself. Imagine that--a wildly fun, addictive computer game without killing or tedious competition.

Millions of people snapped up the original Myst and spent hours discovering the intricate secrets of this new world, and the update will appeal to them as much as to the first-timer. Besides the improvements to the look and feel of the game, there is a new DigitalGuide that provides hints to the terminally stuck--very nice for that one puzzle that refuses to bow to your superior mind.

Completing the package is Myst: The Book of Atrus, a "prequel" novel to the game written by designers Rand and Robyn Miller with David Wingrove. This fascinating fantasy explores and explains much of the background underlying the world they created, and will appeal most to those who have played for a few hours. Whether you've never experienced the richness of Myst or you want to dive back in, the Masterpiece Edition will take you somewhere new. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, visually splendid, remarkably frustrating
Playing Myst reminded me of the episode in
"Red Dwarf" (British sci-fi comedy series)
in which the crew discovers that they're actually
ordinary people who have been playing a virtual
reality sim-game in which they play space travelers.
The attendant is stunned to discover that they've
been playing the intro sequence the entire time.

"But didn't you find the microdot that explains
        the secret mission?"
        "_What_ microdot?"
"On the wall over Rimmer's bunk, the 'i' in his
swimming certificate! The dot over the i is a microdot.
        It's a dead giveaway, innit -
Rimmer can't swim, and he's got a swimming certificate?"

That's about as obscure as most of the puzzles, IMHO.
Gorgeous to look at, wondrous to walk through, but if
it weren't for online tips and tricks, I'd never have
        left Myst Island.

5-0 out of 5 stars It may be hard but it's way cool and atmospheric.
You really do get the feel of absolute abandon and isolation while playing Myst. The graphics may be rather dated now (especially compared to the modern graphics in Uru and Myst IV) but it's easy to get immersed in the quiet, lonely environment and believe your actually there. The sound effects and music are slight and subtle rather than overbearing like in other video games.

Since Myst the franchise has indeed developed and evolved. People still tend to think of them and point and click slide shows. Which isn't very fair. Yes, Myst is this way, though it was made 11 years ago and graphic cards back then were not the frontiers of technology they are today.

A lot of patience and intelligence is needed to solve the puzzles and put the clues together. A lot of reading and note-taking is required and those looking for shoot-em-ups and violence should look elsewhere.

Myst is, indeed, a game for the refined gamer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great game
I've been aware of Myst for around 10 years now, but never got to play it until now, when I bought this 1999 Masterpiece Edition. But for many years I saw pictures of this game like in magazines and I thought the game was worth buying for just the graphics. Well it has much more than just graphics going for it. Never having played the original from 1993, what I do know is Masterpiece Edition has improved graphics and features. It's nice to see a Rated E game that's fun to play. It's the kind of game even recommended to those who think video games have contributed to the downfall of American society. It's also truly a recommended game if you are sick and tired of those slasher or shoot 'em up games. The game is stuffed with puzzles where you have to open up secret passages, look for clues, activate a spaceship, a tree elevator, or whatever, in order to look for missing pages from a book. The only drawback is some of the quests are a bit on the tedious side. But to make things easier, just write down clues on paper, writting some of this stuff on paper would help save time (some of it is crucial). This package also comes with a screensaver with soundtrack CD. If you like the music from the game enough, then you have this CD to hear the music on a regular CD player. As for the game itself, the graphics are wonderful, and in many places are quite realistic (of course there are other scenes that look obviously like computer graphics). I'm glad to to finally get Myst, and I look forward to getting the sequels. ... Read more

        Editorial Review

Amber: Journeys Beyond--a tight and self-contained ghost story--begins when you visit a fellow scientist named Roxy. An avid paranormal researcher, Roxy has chosen her new home because she believes it is haunted. Using a host of unreliable detection devices, she plans to use this house as a laboratory. Her goal: proving the existence of psychic phenomena.

Driving out to the house in a thunderstorm, you are run off the road by a shimmering apparition and are sent crashing into a lake. In short order, you discover other things have gone wrong--Roxy is in the garage, apparently dead. It's up to you to save yourself and the overzealous scientist from the forces lurking in the house.

Patience and close attention to detail are musts for playing Amber: Journeys Beyond. Critical items are sometimes hard to spot, and one or two of the scenes take place in very dark locales. When you can see, the graphics are crisp and drawn with a faint gothic sensibility, surrounding the player in a milieu of creepy sounds and ghost-catching gadgets.

The game is especially suited to beginning or younger gamers, as the problem-solving challenges are on the simple side. Even so, Amber: Journeys Beyond is spooky and engaging, a worthy electronic heir to campfire stories everywhere. Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Xcellent Game but will not work on XP
Whomever wrote that a Compatibality of Win 95/98 will run Amber then please let me know how you got it to run.It will load in XP, but when trying to run the game there is an error in the MOVUTILS file and an error of Script Handler -Both which shuts down the game.

I suggest that if you are "really" tired of the games out now to train our future generation of professional soilders, then keep an old computer on hand so you can play the really good entertainment and thought provoking games like AMBER Journeys Beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars spooky fun!
If you like murder mysteries then you'll like this game. Ghosts from different decades haunt the house and make for a spooky good time!

4-0 out of 5 stars My absolute FAVORITE PC game
It was defenitely way too short!
I bought & played this game back when I was on Win95 (use WinXPpro now) and I had no problems whatsoever. This game was fun, exciting, creepy, and kept me wanting more. Even after I found things I needed in places, I was still curious to search more and just poke around. The stories were sad and haunting, but so entertaining. I was VERY dissapointed that this was so short and I have been searching for a similiar game ever since, with no luck at all :(
Still, I don't regret buying this....I mean, it's been forever, and I'm STILL searching for a game that can entertain me like this did! I gave Amber 4 stars only because of game length... other than that, I say, you have to play this game! ... Read more
