1-0 out of 5 stars It is just an okay version of doom.
First of all, Here are the PROS and CONS

    PROS:
Good for the people who own a SNES, not PC.

    CONS:
    really bad graphics.
    slower animation than PC.
    you can't save the game.
It is shorter than the PC version of doom.

    Overall: 0.9

This is a pretty good game, but not for SNES!
Get it on PC. That version is alot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Doom experience
Oh man, this game is just great. The best sound out of any other Doom, and considering it is for the SNES,the graphics aren't bad either, but if you just got done playing Playstation 2 you will be suffering from a collosal eyesore. This game brings back the joy of releasing anger onto monsters with a Shotgun, hey, it's a guilty pleasure. Just get it!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good game
In the early-mid nineties, a new type of game called the first-person shooter came onto the scene. A number of games in this genre popped up overnight, but none of them were nearly as popular as Doom would go onto become. Before too long, the game arrived on a number of gaming consoles, including the Super Nintendo. Read on for my review.

    PROS:
-It's a first-person shooter on the Super Nintendo! There weren't enough of them, so it's good to see this one made it.
-The game is a direct port of its PC counterpart.
-There are five difficulty levels, tons of different bad guys, and a load of weapons you can use to kill 'em all!
-Putting the cartridge into your Super Nintendo is less of a pain than installing the game on your computer - no questions asked.

    CONS:
-If you've already mastered the PC version of the game, this one isn't going to provide you with any new thrills.
-The graphics are simply horrible. This is one of the most pathetic attempts at a full 3D environment ever seen in a video game (but I guess I can forgive this, since the game is over ten years old now.)
-The animation is slower than it was in the PC version. Ultimately, THIS is the biggest flaw of this version of the game, because it can really throw off your timing.
-You must complete different scenarios of the game on different difficulty levels in order to be able to play the other scenarios. In the PC version, all three scenarios are available from the beginning.
    -NO MULTIPLAYER!

-Let's face the facts, this game pales in comparison to most of the first-person shooters of the modern age.

    OVERALL:
Overall Doom is an excellent first-person shooter, even if it's obviously dated. This series has gone on to spawn numerous clones and sequels, so it's not surprising that the game has remained popular, even to this day. This game is worth checking out if you've got a Super Nintendo, just don't expect anything revolutionary from it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its an OK game, lacked in the weopons area
This game was really fun, except for one fact, the WEOPONS! They should have made more then 4 and i mean come ON! The weopons themselves also lacked in alot of areas. the 1st 2 characters' weopons are up close, and the last guys' stupid wand is more then weak. then he gets the frost shards which is more then annyoing, because you have to fire simutaneosly at a guy till they freeze, which they ALWAYS got in my way. the fighter is too up close if you ask me, but his last weopon is probably the best in the game, but the clerics last weopon shoots souls? whats up with that? and the mages last weopon has to be the worst because you ALWAYS miss and it costs you alot of mana. but the mages 3rd weopon was cool, but tottally inaccurate. the cleric actually gets a spell for a 3rd, but it's HORRIBLE it should take 2 or 1 shot to take down one of those 2 headed guys, but it takes 3 to 5 shots to get em down. the fighter's hammer ALSO goes up close but then OH MY GOD IT ACTUALLY SHOOTS AT A GUY WHAT A MIRACLE!!! So if your looking for a game that has alot of cool weopons n stuff, stay away from this game! but if you could careless about that, and is looking for a strategy challenge, then buy this right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for young and new gamers
This is a classic game to me that i will never completely forget. It has a coroperative mode, which is all i ever played. I must admit, though, the graphics are NOT very good. but if you dont care then this is a good choice

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, Really Bad, Really,Really BAD.
Neither I nor my 9 year old son liked this game.Out of all the many N64 games I've played, this is the only one that has literally made me sick with the eye movement required to play it.The graphics are poor and seem too dark which makes it hard to see things.[...] Without question, the worst N64 game I've ever played.[...] ... Quake 3: Arena
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

As in its dozens of first-person shooter ancestors, id Software and Activision's Quake 3: Arena transports players into a violent, virtual world filled with deadly weapons, impressive power-ups, and intense combat. Players compete on 26 maps in either death match (free-for-all or team play), with goals to rack up as many kills as possible; or capture the flag, a team-oriented game with scoring based on the number of enemy flag captures. Though presenting the best death-match experience around, Quake 3's two game types lack the variation and originality of a similar game, Epic's Unreal Tournament.

Although you'll need the latest video card and computer hardware, it's impossible to dispute the sheer beauty of Quake 3's 3-D engine. The 26 maps are filled with exquisite architecture and impressive special effects; further, Quake 3 provides dozens of highly detailed player models to choose from. If you've played other id Software first-person shooters, the weapons should all look familiar: machine gun, shotgun, plasma gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, lightning gun, railgun, and the BFG 10K. Though impressively rendered and balanced, you've likely used them before in id's Doom, Quake, or any number of other first-person action games.

Hopping online and competing against other Quake 3: Arena players worldwide requires only a 56K or better Internet connection and a few mouse clicks. Quake 3 offers an infinitely replayable multiplayer experience (and a violent one--not for youngsters), but an unsatisfying solo game. Its single-player tournament mode--a series of death matches against computer AI bots--serves simply as a massive training exercise for multiplay. --Doug Radcliffe

    Pros:

    • Cutting-edge graphics
    • Near-perfect death-match multiplay
    • Detailed player models
    • Beautiful level architecture
    Cons:
    • Uninspired single-player experience
    • Lack of game variations
    • Unoriginal weapons

4-0 out of 5 stars Really good!
really good online game, not as good as the Unreal Tournament series, but quite the contender.

Cant wait for Quake 4 comes out in August!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Q3A
You miss, you die. This is basically the premise of Quake 3:Arena. iD software shows once again who's king in the fps deathmatch arena. There is basically no replacement, no contender for Quake 3:Arena which sets a new standard for the deathmatch experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only game I play
I've played Halo, medal of honor, call of duty etc., Only Quake I can't get enough of.Have to be quick, moves fast, and I love killing those creatures of destruction. Too Bad id software won't make a Quake IV ( better grafics, unlimited use of the trasporter etc.) I guess the violent nature of the game was the reason for the final edition. ... Read more

    Half-Life Platinum Collection
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM (14 November, 2000)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Half-Life: Platinum Collection contains all the great action that earned Half-Life Game of the Year honors from over 50 publications and had Imagine Media's PC Gamer magazine calling it the "Best PC Game Ever" (November 1999). This package contains the core Half-Life game as well as both Half-Life expansion packs and the two most popular Half-Life mods: Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike.

In Half-Life, you play as Gordon Freeman, a research associate at the Black Mesa Federal Research Facility. An experiment blows up in your face, and suddenly aliens and a military death squad surround you. Half-Life: Opposing Force takes place during the events of Half-Life, but casts you as a lieutenant of one of the commando squads sent to kill Freeman. Half-Life: Blue Shift also takes place during the same time as Opposing Force and Half-Life, but this time you play through the Black Mesa disaster as a lowly security guard. Team Fortress Classic is an online action game featuring a wide array of WWII-themed character classes for a team warfare bonanza. Counter-Strike brings the action of Team Fortress Classic into the modern age: it's an online war of terrorists versus counterterrorists in modern team-based combat. All five award-winning programs are included in this one box. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME
Couldnt get over the fact of the characters adaptation to the environment... its crazy. loved ever minute, second, hour and week i played... riveting. recomend to everyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this, it isn't a complete set
This compilation of 4 great Half-Life based games is a somewhat bastardized version of the superior title which was released under the same name a while later. If you buy this version, you are not getting the entire collection. The new version contains yet another expansion to Half-Life that is worth playing.

      The original Platinum Collections contain:
      1. Half-Life (The original, which started it all, a great game.)
      2. Half-Life:Opposing force (1st official expansion to Half-Life)
      3. Team Fortress Classic (A mediocre multiplayer mod from Sierra)
      4. Counter-Strike (The ultimate multiplayer game. This alone is worth the entire price, although you can get it for free if you own Half-Life, which you will if you buy this collection.)

The new version contains an expansion to the original called Blue Shift. In this expansion you play as a security guard in the Black Mesa compound (the same area as the original). It is just as fun as the original, but shorter.

You can usually find the newer pack (it is grey, not platinum or silver, and says 5 games in one on the front) at any large chain retail stores such as Target, Wal-Mart,or K-Mart. Hope this review can be of some help.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you still don't own Half-Life...
And you own a PC, shame on you!

Alright, here's what you need to do. Look up "Half-Life: Platinum Collection" and put it in your shopping basket. Check out. Here's what you get.

Half-Life: The original and although somewhat dated graphically, it is still a cracking good FPS. The game is just fun to play from soup to nuts and loaded with atmosphere. The levels are more innovative than anything before or since.

Half-Life: Opposing Force This game got a 93% courtesy of PC Gamer and that is absolutely remarkable considering this is basically just a Half-Life mod, although a bloody creative one! You'll love the boot-camp sequence and hey, R. Lee Ermey is in it! What more do you need?

      And you also get...

Counter-Strike: Still the most popular online FPS.

      and...

      Team Fortress: Classic

      WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?

5-0 out of 5 stars Best shoot 'em up for a Pentium III or less
I resorted to purchasing older video games, like this one, because my computer can't handle Quake III or the other new ones that ask for a Pentium 4 and a fancy graphics card.

I don't mind the age of this game one bit. It's great fun and brings me back to the good old days of Doom II, except this is better, graphics-wise. Extreme value for the money (I paid about $9 for a used copy from a third-party seller). Why buy new games at all?

I had to tinker with Quake II's video options for a few minutes before arriving at an optimum setting. It does not auto-detect your setup, unlike modern games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
A great game in its time and a true classic today. It's THE game to have for cyborg killing, big weapon shooting, ultra macho, adrenaline pumping, super violent action. Great for single player and multiplayer fans alike. No FPS library is complete without this game.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome game, trust me
I've had Quake II for over 4 years, and at one point played it for over 4 hours a day, every day.I've waisted thousands of hours on this game, and know everything there is to know about it.I was once one of the top thousand in the world.Take it from me when I say this truly is THE best game ever produced, and that's saying something since it was released in 1998.The single player mode gets old quick, but online multiplayer is so intense and down-right FUN that it can drain years off of your life.I've moved on, I haven't played it in several months. But I owe it to this game to say it really is the best and anyone assembling a PC game collection needs this game.

As for buying hints, don't buy this game for any of the game consoles, because they stink; stick with the PC/Mac version. Also, don't buy it unless you have a internet connection and intend to play multiplayer, because it will get old quick otherwise. Also, don't buy this game unless you have at least a medium-good graphics board (usually at least 16MB), along with other elements of your PC being relatively robust. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game!
Excellent Game! You get to use 8 different and unusual weapons, and kill monsters that can use those weapons against you, such as the ogre and his grenade launcher! I recommend this great game to anybody who likes FPS games, and everybody who doesn't!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cool Game
If Quiver, the macintosh editor for this game, had never been released, I would rate this a 2. This is the only fully 3D game with a mac compatible level editor in existence (Marathon is 2.5D). Unfortunately, Quiver is shareware and costs 20 bucks. I still have no idea what the storyline is (being a marathon addict, I expect a storyline), butthe gameplay is okay. What really boosted my opinion of the game is the fact that a program that converts maps made for quake to quake 3 has been released. Now it is possible to make Q3 maps on a mac.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Great
A little old now, but 5 stars for the groundbreaking game this was when it came out.I've still got it installed on my hard drive, and while the game itself is good, the mod potential is what really makes Quake shine.Mods like Team Fortress, Nehahra, and AirQuake make Quake a long lasting source of great fun, and I still pop onto QuakeWorld (with GLQuakeWorld) for some insane 20-person DMs from time to time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stange is good
Majora's Mask is a strange game: while it is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, it is clearly a Zelda game of a very different shade.

It begins with Link slowly trudging deep in the Lost Woods, with his trusty horse, Epona, when he is attacked by a masked and mischevious Skull Kid - who steals his precious Ocarina and Epona. Worse still, the Skull Kid turns Link into a Deku form of himself, and Link finds himself in a strange Mirror - like Hyrule. Things turn even worse when Link finds the moon slowly getting bigger over the course of 3 days...

Majora's Mask features the very same Gameplay as Ocarina of Time, with a few exceptions. The entire course of the game is set within 3 days or 72 hours - and hours seem to pass like minutes, giving a player a total of just over an hour. While this may seem off-putting, it is implemented very well - people have set schedules over the course of the game, meaning you will be pottering around the Clock Town while not in dungeons, with the promise of an upgrade - or even a new mask.

Masks, as the title suggests, play an important role - some make you run faster, talk to enemies, summen foes or sooth arguements and more. There are a total of 24 masks to collect, the reward being a mask containing "The Merits of all masks". The best of the masks are the ones that allow transformation. (Let's face it, who HASN'T dreamed of swimming as a Zora or rolling as a Goron) The Zora Mask, the Goron Mask and the Deku mask. they allow you to transforminto all your favourites from Ocarina, each with the gifts of the species - Super fast swimming, Incredible strength, and, er, spitting nuts.

Majora's Mask is harder, darker and more original than Ocarina of Time - the unique aspects of the game are implemented very well but the way the game is played may be off-putting for some. Brilliant and totally original.

P.S. the start bits kinda boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars The darkest in the Zelda catalogue
If only that damn site IGN didn't take my idea first. They described this game as the Empire Strikes Back in Zelda and it's true. It's more darker, more gloomy and at times it can even be depressing. Unlike Ocarina of Time which oozed coolness and wonderment or Wind Waker which was cheery and uplifting due to its look, Majora's Mask is quite different than other installments but in no way is it bad, it's just different.

Story: I always considered this game more like an epilogue to Ocarina of Time rather than a full sequel. At the start of the game directly taking place after Ocarina, Link is in a forest and gets ambushed by Skull Kid and is turned into a Deku(they look like tiny trees with a long mouth) and enters a portal. From here Link finds himself in Termina, a land that is gonna be destroyed by a falling moon in 3 days. So it's up to Link once again to save the day using the powers of time and this weird masks.

Graphics: Reviewing this game in 2005 with such games as Metroid Prime, Halo and Metal Gear Solid 3 of course puts Majora to shame but remembering the graphics at that time, it's more of an extension of Ocarina only darker and not as vibrant. Due to maybe the Expansion Pak or just the game itself, the game does have framerate issues and some rough textures. Beware that the Gamecube re-release on the Collector's Edition sometimes freezes the game.

Gameplay: All Zelda games pretty much to this day revolved around some kind of "gimmick": in Ocarina it was time travelling, Wind Waker was controlling the wind, Minish Cap was the ability to shrink to thumbnail size and the Oracle series revolved around time travelling and season changing. Majora's Mask revolves around, yep you guessed it, masks. Link with the benefit of 24 masks(25 if you get all 24), Link can turn into different characters such as the Deku race, Goron race(big tough creatures with a taste for rocks) and the Zora race(fish people roughly). Or there's different masks like Postman, Ghost, or Bunny mask which makes him run faster.

The other aspect for the 3rd time in Zelda's history revolves around time travelling, once in Ocarina and the other in Oracle of Ages. Only this time it's different. You see the game's clock makes 3 days take about roughly 50 minutes before the moon crashes so with the Ocarina you can go back to Day 1 and start over, even make the time go slower so you have more time. This is quite annoying to say the least since your funds, arrows and bombs revert to zero if you go back to Day 1, your items are intact, your extra stuff isn't. And also you could be in the middle of a dungeon to be really close only to be on the final day and have to reset to Day 1, which incidentally cancels any progress you made in the dungeon.

Not to say the game is bad(it's just slightly hard) but it's quite enjoyable to go through, if you don't mind it's tone anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars very very good but,not as good as 'ocarina of time'
I played the Legend of zelda ocarina of time in 1997,WHAT A YEAR THAT WAS!!!I had so much fun!then in gameinformer magazine the new preveiws page said that there was going to be a new game called 'the legend of zelda:majora's mask'it was about link going to a new land where the moon is falling and he has only 3 days to live and on the third day link has to play the song of time so that he can go back to the first day,I HAD TO HAVE IT!but then half a year later when it came out,I was very upset because when I played it,it was too easy and I beat it in almost a week!when I played'Ocarina of time'it took me almost two YEARS!but other then that it was a fun game,Very fun in fact.I really liked that you can upgrade your sword, when in 'ocarina of time'the master sword is what you see what you get!PROS TO MAJORAS MASK:There are lots of masks that you can get and they give powers(like fast running),you can upgrade your sword twice, there are new songs for link to play on his ocarina and there is a bank so link can have alot of money!CONS:you have to play 'the song of time'way to often because the moon is falling for some reason and you have only 3 days to live, finding more then half of the masks are very hard to find, the game has only four temples and they are all very hard way too short.but all in all this game is worth around $15.00,so if you like the other Zelda games try this one too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark Acclaim Game - Unreal Visual Simulation
In 1997 Acclaim brought the very first Arcade quality first person shooter to the N64 with Turok, a primordial theme that defined future genres that would have to actually animate the end level bosses making them more realistic, trying to match what Speilberg did four years earlier, and come very close, meaning Turok was probably some of the best animation ever seen in a 1st person shooter. The story, the levels, the enemy AI, all of this was very impressive for its time and ACCLAIM have stayed ball players because of it. The graphics had people in AWE. This was the end of 1996 start of 1997. I had never played or seen anything like this before. The N64 was an awesome engine. ACCLAIM delivered a stunning entry game. Never forget it. WOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinos for dinner
This was the first game I picked up for the N64 when I initially got one.
I must say, disregard any and all crap people say about this game, or the Turok series, for that matter.
This is absolutely the best first-person shooter series on the N64.
The jungle environments are lush and colorful....the graphics in Turok are undeniably the best (next to Turok 2, my all-time favorite N64 game) People b*tch and moan about the fog, but I see no problems at all with it. It's a JUNGLE. It's SUPPOSED to be muggy....hence, the fog. Sure, in reality, the dense fog is used to cover up jaggies and lack of system power, but I feel its a nice touch.
The levels are huge and well-designed....it's fun exploring every possible nook and cranny in each of the levels.
The control of the game is EXCELLENT. It took a while to get used to the odd control, but now, if I had a preference, I would love to use the N64 controller to navigate any and ALL first-person shooters....I love the control scheme.
There are multitudes of enemies in the game. Sure, you won't have to fight more than 2 or 3 enemies at a time at intervals, but that's not a problem whatsoever.
The weapons in the game are what really sell. Before I got this game for myself, I had played it over at a friend house, and when he busted out a damn MINI-GUN to mow down a raptor, I was like "HOLY CRAP!" Not only are the weapons awesome, but the animations of the weapons firing are the best I've seen in any FPS, and the first of it's kind, back then. Shells pop out of the shotgun and go flying. Bullet casings spit out of the mini-gun at a rapid rate. The kickback of some of the weapons is so real, you almost feel like you're actually firing the guns. Hell, if you run out of ammo, you still have your bow and arrow, or Tek Bow (with exploding arrows)

There is hardly anything wrong with this game....and nothing I can think of right now!

do have no life?do you enjoy wandering aimlessly through hundreds of tiny dark rooms looking for switches only all the rooms look exactly alike?got a lot of time on your hands?then this is the game for you.the weopons rule!of course unless you cheat theyre never there when you need them.the fighting and shooting up dinosaurs is cool but all the wandering and guessing sucks.i had the most fun just cheating by putting in stuff to make all the weopons there and all of them infinitely loaded.even with total immunity to death youll still just search and search and still wont beat it.unless youre infinitely patient. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Diamond of All RPGs!!
Chrono Trigger is, without a doubt, the best RPG ever released on the Super Nintendo and quite possibly, the best one ever made.It is so far above and beyond the norm that to dislike this game would indicate that you have some kind of mental problem.

I will not bother with a plot synopsis since I am sure most of the other reviewers have written one already. There are several things unique about this game that make it outstanding.First of all, this story centers around time travel, which is very unique for an RPG.You can travel to the distant future, or you can travel back as far as 65 million BC to the stone age.Time travel is the heart of the story and is executed incredibly well.It also allows you to meet new characters (Ayla, Frog and Robo) and visit places that existed in the past and the future but not in the present.

Another aspect that Square added to this game is the Tech skill. This feature is fantastic! Each character is able to learn special techniques that he or she can use in battle. Some are physical attacks, others are magic attacks. But the special quality here is that you can use those special abilities in combination with one or two other characters. When used with 1 other character it is called a Double Tech. With 2 other characters it is a Triple Tech. The triple tech's are very powerful, but can only be used if Crono is in the party.

The music in Chrono Trigger is excellent and very memorable.I have never heard such a great soundtrack in any game before. The other sounds in the game were great and realistic. The graphics were beautiful. And unlike other RPG's the characters are all full-sized instead of sprite-sized.You can actually make out the characters' faces and clothes in this game.

The characters are wonderful, with no annoying cliches (Except maybe Marle, the princess) or personalities. Each one is distinct and has his or her own role in the story. The development of each character is very well done. You will not be left wondering about anyone's past or anything like that.It is all incredibly well thought out and executed.

I can't say enough about Chrono Trigger.I first played it almost 10 years ago on the SNES, and now I have it on Playstation (Part of a collection released as Final Fantasy Chronicles along with another classic game, Final Fantasy IV).This game is gaming at it's best!If it has any flaws, I can't think of any right now.It is challenging, interesting and visually superb. If you have never played this game before, you are really missing out on something special. And for those of you who own this game already, don't be stupid and sell it.This is one of the best games ever made on any platform, and in any genre. My advice:Hang on to this title and treasure it, because there may not be another like it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt the best video game ever made
This game is unbelieveably good.I really cant stress ehough how wonderful this game is.For its time it was Fantastic, and compared to the RPG's of today it is still right toward the top.The compelling story line, the wonderful characters and the music...the music in this game is so rich that you can really listen to the songs over and over and not get sick of them. The gameplay is fantastic.I cant stress enough how wonderful a game this really is.If you have a PS, PS2 or were smart enough to hang on to your SNES it is absolutly worth the price. This game will leave you wanting to play it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped? NOPE...
For a game with so many five star reviews one might think it is overrated, but if you haven't played it , get that thought out of your head immediatly! I'll tell you why this game is one of the greatest games games ever made...

Graphics-10/10 graphically, this game is amazing. I've seen games for playstation that have worse graphics than this. The characters and backrounds are extremely detailed in lush color. Some SNES games have a tendency to have rather boring colored backrounds, but not this game. Also, the techniques used during battle look great. There isn't much else to say other than amazing.

Music-10/10 WOW...the music is nothing short of miraculous. This game has got to have some of the best music I have ever heard in any video game, especially in the Zeal section. The music is close to the calibur of Super Metroid, which in my opinion has the greatest music for a video game. It is at the same calibur as Final Fantasy 6, tactics, 8,7 and besides those it may be the greatest soundtrack for a RPG ever made. I might think this game has THE greatest soundtrack ever made, but to be honest I didn't actually play this game till 2 and a half or so years ago, so I didn't have any memories of the game tied in with the music, and games I played when I was a kid seem to touch me in a stronger way. No complaints what so ever here.

Storyline- 10/10 The idea that things done in a different time period effects the future is not only brilliant, but it is revolutionary. You will really start to feel for the characters here, and the stroyline will grip you into the game.

Entertainment/gameplay- 20/10 Yep, 20/10, there are so many side quests to accomplish here, and every one of them is fantastic. You never know what you might unlock if you do something in a different time period. This game is pretty short, only maybe 20 hours the first time through, but if you go through and level up your characters to the max and complete all the sidequests, your looking at easily 40 hours.

Overall- 100/10. Yep, you read it right. 10/10 isn't enough for this gem, so I upgraded it to 100/10. Like I said earlier, I didn't first play this game until 2 and a half years ago, and I still loved it, prooving how great this game is. If you are into old- school RPGs then you will probably already have this game, but anyone else will love it too. I think it is innovative and up-to-date enough to satisfy even PS2 fans.

      Editorial Review

Diablo is a fantasy role-playing game that captures the spirit of original face-to-face games like Dungeons and Dragons. With a straightforward story line based on fulfilling quests assigned by nonplayer characters, you equip yourself, venture into a dungeon, and slaughter legions of hideous foes. Along the way, you unearth magical treasure, discover mighty spells, and earn experience that can be used to increase your combat abilities.

Almost all of your time with Diablo is spent underground, exploring and conquering ever-deeper levels of the gloomy dungeon. Combat is fast, brutal, and constant. Whether your weapon of choice is a sword, axe, bow, or spell, all forms of combat employ a simple two-click system, which is elegant without being simplistic.

Replayability and customizability are Diablo's strong points; the incredible number of options and possibilities--and the fun that can be had experimenting with different strategies--keeps players coming back for more. All the dungeon levels are generated anew each time you draw up a new character, and are packed with an entirely different set of textures, features, items, traps, creatures, and quests. While one game may stock the fifth subterranean level with an army of skeleton warriors, the next game may pack that level with hordes of winged gargoyles. Multiplayer options exist for two to four players, so you don't have to take on the world by yourself unless you prefer solo play.

Released in 1997, this game is far simpler than newer titles that have expanded on its original concepts; there are only three character classes and a limited number of ways to truly distinguish your character from others. But sometimes there is no beating a classic. Three years old and with a sequel due in mid-2000, the original Diablo has aged remarkably well. Many of its features will seem familiar to seasoned fantasy gamers, just because so many of them have been incorporated into later RPGs.

Players who yearn for uncluttered adventuring and those with older computers will definitely want to check this one out. --Alyx Dellamonica

      Pros:

      • Endless replayability
      • Fun, classic dungeon hack-and-slash game play
      • Cool magic items
      • Cooperative or competitive multiplay
      Cons:
      • Magic items tend to define character
      • Multiplay is lousy with cheaters

5-0 out of 5 stars An action classic
This game was and still is a fun adventure. While the game mechanics are fairly repetitive, click to hack and slash, it does offer random maps, a large assortment of items, and strategy in the form of monster resistances/immunities.

By today's standards this sounds weak, yet in reality it has the simple style that makes it easy to learn and hard to put down.Quickly, you get sucked into doing just one more level since you flew through the last one so quickly, only to spend an hour or more carefully picking your way through, so as not to be overwhelmed.

Easily accessible and playable again and again by yourself or with a group of friends, keeps Diablo a worthwhile value.

        5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a non-gamer and I LOVE IT!!
I had a co-worker back in 97 that had this game.I almost had to threaten his life to get him to do any work for playing this game. Now almost 8 years later, I finally picked it up just to see what the big deal was.

This game is like software crack.I haven't had it two weeks yet and I've spent some crazy hours playing this game.I started with a rogue and got up to the 10th level of the dungeon with her before I hit a dead-end.Go down the steps to the next level and DIE!She was surrounded immediately and suffered a severe beat-down EVERY time.

I then started a second game with a warrior.I got him all the way to Archbishop Lazarus where I had a similar situation.Death at every turn and no way out to fix it.Then I found the beauty of Diablo.Just click New Game. You flush the old game but NOT the character.Yes, you're starting back at the first level of the dungeon but you've still got your 23rd level warrior who now laughs at the pithy little creatures of those lower levels.

The Butcher, who made both my rogue and warrior suffer mightily on the first trip down, died after only three hits from my warrior and 10 arrows from my rogue downed him without her suffering even a broken nail.

Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion set are waiting in the wings, but this game still has a few miles left in it before I move on.I still have to bring a wizard up - which stands to be much more challenging.I am looking forward to it.

This game is incredible - I probably won't be able to handle the sequal.

5-0 out of 5 stars My drug of choice for about six months
When I discovered this game, I lost six months of my life. I went to work, came home, and played this game. Loser? I guess. In my defense, I did maintain contact with the outside world during this period of darkness (I always played the game with the lights out), although perhaps to them I seemed somewhat pale and inarticulate. (I'm kidding.)

For me, this game was hard to master at first. I'd never played a PC game of any kind, for the simple reason that I was afraid I'd become addicted. And, of course, it happened. I struggled with every character through the first few levels of the church, and it must have been two or three weeks of serious playing - well past 3am even on a work night - before I finally made my way down to Diablo's lair.

Maybe it was the lateness of the hour, the darkness of the room, or perhaps more likely both, but when Diablo finally came out he literally scared the tar out of me. What an incredibly well rendered "monster". The rendering of Diablo in Diablo II did not evoke similar fear, even if it was somewhat more impressive.

One of the things I liked about this game was that I never played with any cheats, unlike Diablo II (maphack, etc.). So the game was always dark, and it was always scary. In some ways, it was better than its successor - but not in enough ways. Diablo II (expansion) is the superior of the two, but this isn't a game to overlook. ... Read more

        Game Cartridge (02 February, 2000)

        Editorial Review

In an ironic twist, one of the coolest, most action-packed auto racing games in eons starsone of the world's most sluggish cars. But racers will never sense a lack of speed in BeetleAdventure Racing as they zip, jump, and fall around some of the most original and beautifultracks seen on the Nintendo 64.

The uniqueness of this game lies in the beautiful graphics and rampant, humorous action (àla San Francisco Rush). On a Tiki-themed island track, for instance, racers are startled by aroaring T-Rex (clearly a nod to Jurassic Park), and risk a molten demise as the road passesalongside rivers of realistically rendered lava. With unusually long tracks, vertigo-inducing jumpsand falls, tons (and tons) of hidden areas and shortcuts, breakable obstacles, and well-placedpower-ups, this is a game that just keeps getting better with each play.

Solo racers are pitted against seven other cars in a single race or championship mode, duel againstone other computer car, or race against the clock. Multiplayer variations include head-to-headracing for up to four racers, and a Beetle Battle that could easily be its own game cartridge. In thisMario Kart-style mode, racers are armed with mines, rockets, magnets, and shieldpower-ups that impede the progress of fellow racers attempting to collect a variety of ladybug icons. Those looking for a long-lived gaming experience can't go wrong with this one. --EricTwelker

        Pros:

        • Gorgeous graphics rival many arcade racing games

Beetle Adventure Racing is a fun racing game for all ages. The graphics are amazing for a Nintendo 64. The Championship mode is a little to easy though. But I really love the Beetle Battle mode, especially with four players. It deserves 5 stars by far. It is a game well worth the money. It will keep you entertained for hours played levels, earning cars, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not hard, not easy, lots of fun
This is a racing game for anyone, and it features only the new version of the best selling car of all time, the Volkswagen Beetle. It is a great game, with different difficulty levels in the championships, challenging opponents, and progressively harder courses. This is also a great game for multiplayer, with the very original and fun "beetle battle"

        Courses:

Coventry Cove:A simple course for beginners, not very hard, and many interesting shortcuts

Mount Mayhem:Significantly harder than Coventry Cove, this course takes you on a trip through a decked-out mountain, with many surprises and shortcuts and even a ski jump that you can take your car off of.

Inferno Isle: Self Explanitory. It's a course taking place on an island that is competing with a volcano, and there is also a spot where you can dive into the volcano (not into the lava, of course, but into the volcano for that matter)

Sunset Sands: Egyptian themed course, running through ruins.Unlike the other courses, this one has shortcuts that make a very significant difference in your position.

Metro Madness:also Self-Explanitory.A drive through the city streets at top speed, and an interesting shortcut that literally lets you drive through a hotel.

Wicked Woods: A "scary" drive through a Sleepy Hollow style setting.Rightfully, the hardest course in the game.

Altogether, I think that this is a game for anyone into the Volkswagen Beetle, racing games, or multiplayer. It combines the best interests of all elements of the racing game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come Get Some Of The Original And The Best!!!!!
This was the best version of Duke Nukem ever released. It may have only had 3 levels, but it had enough stages in each to make it a kick %$# game.

With the cheats and codes it made the game fun for hours. I couldnt work out how to use the level biulders where you could custom make your own levels ect... but I did play a few of other peoples who created them, and they work very well, if you can work out how the heck to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy smoke, this is an exellent FPS!!!
This is one of the best FPS games I have played. Not just a fun game, but also it is hilarious! On Episode 2 at the ending, after you kill the alien, then you will see a very funny cutscene. The cutscene is, Duke loosens his belt, pulls his pants down, and he uses the bathroom on top of the alien.
You can also make your very own levels with Build. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hail to the King, BABY!!!!!!
after a few years of rehab from the addicting play of Duke Nukem 3D I am back repurchasing it again and going down for the count. I can't help but laugh my butt off when I play this game. Its famous "one liners" or example "Your face your ass whats the difference." or my favourite "Its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum but I am all out of gum." GT Interactive payed homage to the one of greatest movies ever "Evil Dead 2". This game is a classic and a must have for FPS fans and it even pokes fun of Doom. God, I am going to spend endless hours reliving my Childhood in this game. Please Buy you won't regret it. ... Read more
