5-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Camera?HARDLY!!!!
I am amazed at how some people hate the camera control in this game. When I first played Myth I, I was sure that the freedom of the camera would become standard in every Real-Time Strategy game.Sadly, only Myth II took advantage of this cool camera.Sadly, almost every RTS these days has a stationary camera, locked above with no way to zoom in or out, or get better angles. For me, this ruined Warcraft III.I hated being a static observer, not able to enjoy the game because of the lack of camera control.Warcraft III is still a fun game, but Myth II still stands above all.

P.S. - Try playing the tutorial three or four times. It should help you acclimate to the camera's controls
P.P.S. - If you liked Myth II, don't bother with Myth III.It's a lot worse

5-0 out of 5 stars aw yeah
This game kicks azz

Your army fights evil armies up and down terrain.360 pan of the action allow many angles. The controlls are simple 2 button to rotate view and mouse to select troops. Some throw bombs some shoot arrow some chop with sword.

This game is one of finesse, since you troops move at different rates and can be separated[bad for slow moving troops] Enemies are numerous and results of chopping and gerandes is bloody.

learn what a yrkridia and a trow are :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Strategy , lots of strategy!
Myth 2 is a great real-time strategy game. It has a good story line and challenging solo player levels, and a large number of multi-player (competitive) playing options. The game is set in a quasi-medieval human-centric world familar to anyone who has ever played dungeons and dragons or read Tolkien or any other sword and sorcery fantasy literature. The story is a little less coherent or immersive than Myth: The fallen lords, but there are a number of features added to Myth 2 which make it just as (or more) enjoyable.

In the solo levels you battle the forces of evil in an epic campaign. The different missions occur in a variety of settings each with it's own goal. You get to control human soldiers and archers, berzerkers (think braveheart), dwarfs (who throw explosives), and warlocks.Your enemies include zombies, spear throwing flying souless, exploding pus corpses, tough pig beasts, giants, ghols (kind of a cross between monkeys and dogs), and other creatures.

What makes Myth so fun? Maybe the answer to that is to identify how Myth is different from the other combat & strategy games.

Firstly Myth is a "Real-Time" strategy game. There are no turns where one player makes a turn then the next player responds, everything happens in real-time - simultaneously. The battles are what Dungeons and Dragons battles would be like if you didn't have to keep rolling the dice, consulting charts and calculating numbers.

Unlike first person shooter games like Quake or Unreal, Myth puts you in charge of several units/troops at a time. You can give your troops orders independantly or have them work together, but you have to think about more than just one character, as you can have dozens of troops under your command at any one time.

Unlike combination resource building/strategy games that emphasize long-term planning and in which a single decision made early on can have disastrous consequences much later on - so that battles are more the result of how many and what types of weapons you have accumulated rather than on how good a commander you are, in Myth, the focus is on a player's strategy _in battle_ and immediately before battle.

When playing competitively against other players each player has (generally) the same mix and numbers of troops so that winning a game is not determined by who has accumulated the most toys, winning depends on using various types of units effectively, using terrain to your advantage, knowing when to fight and when to retreat, how to use troop formations, set traps, etc.

Although Bungie no longer provides the free bungie.net game server for Myth players to play with/against each other, you can still play Myth on a local network, directly with another player over the internet, or through use of one of the newer free Myth Game Servers (mariusnet.com or www.playmyth.net).

Myth 2 is very addictive fun.Myth is an old game at this point, but I would still recommend it. Die-hard fans still play the game regularly online and fans still create new competitive maps and solo missions which keep the game fresh. If you do get this game and want to play it online, you will need to download the latest update to the game which is available for free at www.versiontracker.com. [You still need to BUY the game, the free update only updates the game, it does not work on it's own]You can also find lots of Myth related info and strategy guides at the Myth Graveyard - mythgraveyard.mything.org ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This game is totally addictive. It can be a little boring as the software tends to want to show you every little thing that is going on. However if you play on the tiny, small or standard map you're good to go.

Beware that the AI will most assuredly cheat and totally tick you off. I've never seen an AI cheat so blatantly as it does in this game.

I've played this game for about 5 hours everyday, for about six months and still haven't had enough.

I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game, But Some Changes from Civ 2 are not for better
Over all, I really like the game. Most of the changes from Civ 2 are good, but there is one REALLY annoying one that costs this version a full star, one and a half if I could, and that is the fact that ships and planes cannot destroy units. They can only bombard them, which can weaken them to a point where they're ALMOST finished, but they cannot finish them off themselves. Planes can destroy planes, ships can destroy ships, but planes cannot destroy ships or land units, and ships can't destroy land units (or planes). I would imagine that the makers had many complaints about this and hopefully they'll put it back the way it was for Civ IV. If your a Civ nut, buy it. If not, wait for Civ IV.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, the AI cheats!
First, this game is extremely fun. I've owned it for years now, and I keep reinstalling it and playing it again.

I think it's a huge step up from Civ II, but there are still huge flaws. The game is made for limitless possibilities, yet the designers obviously didn't try any of them. I had once conquered a huge map before, and had to shut down the computer because the game insisted on popping up the exact same text message for all of my cities (literally hundreds of them - around 300) for about 3 seconds each. 300x3/60 = 15 minutes. - If anyone is curious, it was the message stating "we love the king day" had been cancled, due to my excessive warring in Democracy.

Another FATAL flaw is the combat system. It will literally have you ripping out your hair, or throwing your monitor across the room. The AI cheats badly. In the long game I had played, only on the second difficulty, I lost hundreds of "Modern Armor" tanks attacking primitive units such as pikemen. And I loved it when the little cave-man row-boat destroyed my battleship. Yet the AI could smash my Mech-Infintry (Best Defensive unit) with pathetic units such as Knights and other sword-based fighters. These things don't happen in the real word. One tank could probably take out thousands of little guys with sticks. And no matter how many times you shoot the tank with arrows, it's just not going to damage it. If it only happened once in a while, fine. But trust me, you will need extreme self control to keep your cool after spending so much time researching techs and building up this deadly beautiful army of tanks, only to have it completely worthless in the end. So it's either play the game on the easiest setting (the AI is basically retarded here, and the game very boring), or stress out.

I'll stop complaining now. And I'll add the fact that I wouldn't be so touchy about it if I hated it. It really is a fun game, especially for strategy fans. Just don't take the end results as serious as I did! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best WWII flight sim available
Pay no attention to the two bad reviews of this game above. The people who wrote them obviously didn't have the hardware to properly run this game and didn't read the instructions carefully. This game has the most realistic flight characteristics of any combat flight sim out there. I've watched this game from it's infancy and have played every version. The detail in this game with regard to the variety of planes and environments is unparalelled in flight sims. If the gentleman who flies real planes from Japan that wrote the negative review above can't land a plane in this game, I would never get in a real plane with him. It takes some practice to do but I've even made carrier landings in the ocean with a Black Sheep Squadron Corsair. This is a fantastic game if you enjoy WWII flight sims!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating Game
This game is frustrating, it seems to be a very elaborate game. But compared to the other games like Fighter Ace, the plane model is way too difficult.I fly real planes and I have trouble taking off from this game without damaging the planes. Also from the time I was flying there does not seem to be a lot of people flying.

Also, there is only cockpit view, which is realistic. But Fighter Ace at least give you the options of flying in Arcade mode just to have fun or realistic mode to emulate real life.

Being a Fighter Ace user wanting to check the other game out, I am disappointed and don't understand what the concept is.It is too bad since they seem to have put a lot of effort in the game and in marketing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Oline Game
Warbirds is an online game. Of course you can download it but the CD "may" save you download-time and money.

The offline mode (where the planes come back after you shoot them down) is purely to trainyour skills - skills you will need to survive online against real humanbeings.

The graphics obviously can't be as fancy as, lets say Falcon4.0, since the game supports up to 400 players online and has to be abalance between "effective" and "eye candy" to minimiselag.

Warbirds has a good Flightmodel, a huge variety of planes, a bigonline comminity and interesting events (Battle of Britain, the Bomber warover Europe etc). The only downside is it's rather expensive online fee. ... Read more

Total Annihilation Gold
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
CD-ROM

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Ever since Total Annihilation hit the PC world back in '97, gushing gamers have fallen all over themselves to heap praise on this amazing real-time strategy game. In classic understatement, PC Games called TA "the Greatest Game of All Time." Without a doubt, this title is an RTS standard, even years after its release. So that's why we Mac folk can still count our blessings with the late '99 release of Total Annihilation Gold, a pack that includes the basic game, plus the Battle Tactics suite of missions (a sort of strategy-clinic/quick-play add-on) and the TA: Core Contingency (a set of 75 new units and 25 new missions).

While Total Annihilation may not have the back-story and sophisticated solo campaign play of its competitors, the game blows them away in nearly every other category. Combat is kick-ass and lightning quick, even on a good 604e, thanks to TA's 3-D engine, which uses polygons in favor of bitmaps to allow tons of players and units to mix it up without the usual slowdowns--you don't even need to invest in 3-D hardware to get this boost. The game just gets better when you add on stupendous graphics, an astounding number of units between the Arm and the Core (over 250 in the base game), a thoughtfully designed resource-management system that rewards aggressive play and allows for amazing comebacks (way better than the "oh, you lost that mine, you lost the game" fate of Warcraft and its ilk), and even an award-winning score performed by a chorus and a 75-piece orchestra.

TA Gold gives you a rocking good start with the base game, Battle Tactics, and the Core Contingency, and is a well-equipped introduction to this RTS classic for the Mac crowd. About the only strike against this otherwise exceptional port is that Mac and PC players still can't duke it out in multiplayer, but that's just an unfortunate quibble with a title this solid. --Paul Hughes

Pros:

  • Just a fantastic RTS game finally ported to the Mac
  • Superior 3-D engine
  • Excellent game design, along with tons of units and scenarios
Cons:
  • Lackluster campaign play
  • No network games with Wintel opponents

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Annihilation
This is the first real-time strategy I ever played, and it set the bar for all the rest. I have not yet found another to challenge it's place in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starcraft N00bs!Prepare for Annihilation!
I have been playing TA for several years now and despite technological advances in the realm of PC gaming, TA still has yet to be surpassed in several fields, primarily in expandability.

TA has several elements that several RTS games did not have at the time, and still do not have, or rarely have. Here are a few.
1:Realistic ballistics in projectiles and counter-tactics thereof. You can dodge the weapons, in Starcraft it becomes a battle of attrition as it does in several other RTS games. Not to mention you can set up support fire and indirect fire from either fire teams or artillery. The artillery can actually fire for effect and you can even lead a target into a shot, something you never seen in games.
2:Complete expandability. You can create not just your own maps and campaigns, but units and weapons, which completely turn the tide and tactics of war.It becomes realistic in the way of real war where it becomes a technology race, you build one weapon and they build a counter for it and so forth.I have my units modified to be actual military units like the F14, the British Aircraft Carrier Arc Royale, XM-29 Joint Fighers, B52s and so forth.
3:Actual recon and patrol. If you know how to use your stealth units right, you can actually set up patrols and recon pickets that can sneak behind enemy lines. The difference between this and the Starcraft Ghosts is that in Starcraft, you can just walk up to anything and almost not be spotted... that's no fun.In TA you actually have to plot routes and what not to sneak behind enemy lines and gather terrain intel.Hell, I have U2 and SR71 spyplanes do aerial recon from high altitudes.
3:Balanced units. In Starcraft, a single marine can take out a battlecruiser... that's stupid. In TA, starships can spell certain doom if you don't handle them right, there are doomsday machines, however, they are usually quite balanced when it comes to how to build them and so forth.

The only downside is that people can make super silly doomsday weapons that can be build in seconds.Just watch out for those and TA will be one hell of an experience.

Oh yeah, the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE!I've never heard a soundtrack so beautifully made as this one.

Get TA!It's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the pinball game with the most sights and sounds!
I have bought this game and it has been really great. The best things about it are the tubes the ball slides through. There are loads of them. The sounds are excellent, the game feels very realistic and looks good. It is a little bit expensive compared to other games I've bought. The instructions are a bit hard to understand and there are a lot of key commands for nudges etc. but you don't need to know that anyway. Hours of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars And you can play at 3:00 a.m., if you want!
An excellent simulation of arcade pinball. It can be adjusted for many skill levels, and has many features that allow you to explore the beautiful artwork. My only complaint is a bug when one of the apparatuses works, but as I'm hardly ever good enough to get to that point, it's not really a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars soooo real you'll flip!
The pro-pinball series is the best. If you've played any other computer pinball simulations, be ready to be impressed. See the entire gamespace reflected in the spinning balls, listen to great music, follow an entertaining and humorous plot. This game is not one of those that you play a couple of times and then put away forever; the gameplay is as infinitely variable as the physics modeling is realistic. You can adjust any aspect of the game from flipper strength and table angle to the scoring. You can even let the game "run in" and "run down" as would a real table in your basement. This game was designed as if it were in the real world. An amazing accomplishment. Also look for their previous title: Big Race USA! If you spent hours playing pinball as a kid, grab this game and leave your quarters behind. If you've always been curious about who or what a "pinball wizard" is, now's your chance. Really a perfect blend of game and computer. ... Read more

The only fun I've ever had playing any of the You Don't Know Jack games is in the dead of winter, drunk, and extremely bored. There is NO WAY this set is worth what is being asked for it. I 'might' pay $$$ including S&H if I had cash to burn. Just doing general browsing, I'm noticing that ALL collections of older Sierra games are way way way way way overpriced. Fairly warned be thee says I. You are a fool to pay what is being asked for these Sierra games. It's not like they clean your house or anything else super marvelous. Can anyone explain to me how this 3 game set of old trivia games is worth $$$ ? I just don't get it. But hey! if you want to .... your money, go for it.

    Editorial Review

The idea behind The Sims is this: the ultimate goal of life is to achieve happiness, and the way to achieve happiness is to satisfy your Sims' needs. That's right, The Sims allows you to create, direct, and manage the lives of SimCity's residents. Each need (Hunger, Comfort, Hygiene, Bladder, Energy, Fun, Social, and Room) can be met by interaction with other Sims or objects: throw a party with the help of a rockin' stereo system, and watch your Sims' Social and Fun ratings improve. Have one of your Sims whip up some food from the refrigerator, and you'll satisfy the Hunger needs of your guests. Or have your Sim engage another Sim in a game of chess: not only will their Fun and Social moods improve, both Sims will gain some points in their Logic skill rating--which might help on the job.

Mismanage your new, simulated family, and you'll be faced with the worst of MTV's The Real World--with a touch of teenage angst drama thrown in for good measure: jealousies will ignite, fights will break out, jobs will be lost, and the house will fall apart. Bringing about such a calamity is almost as much fun as guiding these Sims to material paradise, and takes considerably less time.

A good general rule is that the more expensive the object, the better its ability to satisfy Sim needs. One gameplay goal is to improve your Sim so he or she can climb the career ladder, which nets him or her more money, which allows the purchase of higher quality stuff, which lets you improve your Sim even more. Eventually, your Sim will have a mate, kids, and a mansion with an indoor pool.

Before you decide how to fix your Sims' health and happiness, you need to craft each of your simulated people: pick a name and a gender, decide on personality/astrological sign, and then choose a look from a variety of heads, bodies, and skin tones. After the creation, the next step is to find a place to live. Again, the player can choose from among the empty houses in the neighborhood or decide to buy some land and design a dream house. Building houses is a blast, and the easy-to-use house design interface could almost be its own game: players design the floor plan, put up walls, pick carpet, wallpaper, and siding, and fill the house with furniture, decorations, fixtures, and appliances. You're limited only by your imagination--and your Sims' pocketbook. But the choices you make in designing and decorating your Sims' house are vital.

Triumph or tragedy, each significant event in a Sim's life is captured in a snapshot and saved in a photo album for later viewing. Players can also take photos any time they wish. The photo album feature is cool by itself, but the best part is that you can upload the album to www.thesims.com and share your Sims' sagas with the world. Entire families can also be uploaded and downloaded, as can houses. Want to re-create and manage your own version of Friends? Download the free face and body editor and make Sim clones of Ross, Rachel, and the rest. Want to go really crazy and perfectly re-create the set? Snag the free wall and floor texture editor. With The Sims, you can create whatever--and whomever--you desire.

Toying with the lives, successes, and emotional states of dozens of little Sims is undeniably fun. In the same way that SimCity players develop a condescending attitude toward real-world city planners, The Sims players will begin to see life as a series of needs-satisfying challenges; the game gets in your head. But that's OK: limitless gameplay, endless variety, cool Internet features, and the ability to play matchmaker/landlord/counselor/God makes The Sims a great way to increase your own Fun score. --Mike Fehlauer

    Pros:

    • Unique, addictive, fun gameplay
    • Included photo album feature records triumphs and tragedies
    • Free uploads and downloads expand the game and allow swapping with other players
    • Sims are smart--it's sometimes best to just let them act on their own
    Cons:
    • Addictive gameplay may cause loss of sleep, job
    • Complex behavioral modeling program--requires serious computing power
    • No pets other than fish
