Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 April, 2003) list price: $6.00 -- our price: $6.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review "He has always had this swing. This easy, upthrusting swing. This'pretty' swing, not taught by any coach. One day the Babe just swung--and it was there. It was his." Combining stirring, poetic prose and Mike Wimmer's realistic illustrations, Home Run conveys the feeling of excitement and awe that must have been present at a baseball game in which the great Babe Ruth played. Robert Burleigh, who previously collaborated with Wimmer on the award-winning Flight: The Journey of Charles Lindbergh, writes this picture-book tribute "for my Father--who loved the game ... for my son, Eli, to help him learn the spirit of can-do." His great love for both shines through. Our stomachs knot and spirits soar as Ruth steps up to the plate. Home Run softly draws us into the story, and the illustrations, rendered in oil on canvas, have an expansiveness and glow that lift them from the page. The gentle tribute is enhanced by "vintage-style baseball cards" that highlight aspects of Babe Ruth's career ("The Bambino loved driving low-slung convertibles, donning silk shirts and coonskin coats, and downing huge meals"), allowing Burleigh the opportunity to include important information without destroying the perfect simplicity of the main story. A treasure for anyone with a love of the game, Home Run is also powerfully affecting for those new to the excitement it holds. (Click to see a sample spread. Also, this is not so much a story, as it is an epic poem of The Babe's love for baseball, and his desire to compete and excell. While there are narrative texts on each page that address some statistics and history of Ruth's career, these don't really make a story when you put them together.I'm a rabid San Francisco Giants fan, and I get even more of a sense of what a great player the Babe was from watching Barry Bonds playing baseball... both are the premier players of their era, simultaneously feared and respected, yet for different reasons. Most importantly, my son simply loves this book. And, that's the most important criteria in evaluating a children's book in my opinion. When we read it together, I'll pause at a key point in the story/poem and he'll fill in the last word or three of the line; we've read it so many times he practically has memorized it from hearing it so often. This book is a beautiful and excellent combination of poetry and art about baseball.
The text by Robert Burleigh comes in two parts.First, there is the book's narrative, a sort of lyric ode to the Babe that combines his discovering his "pretty" swing as a boy with a home run he hits off of a Red Sox pitcher years later.Second, under the narrative text there is the back of a faux-baseball card (from "The World Champion" series), that has biographical and statistical details about Ruth. However, the centerpiece of this book is the time at bat that takes up the last half of the book.Earlier there is a striking painting of Ruth launching a pop-up; the view is from behind the catcher who has taken off his mask, all eyes turned to the sky and the small white ball rising into the sky.Wimmer offers several unique and compelling perspectives during the home run episode as well: the Red Sox first baseman craning his neck to follow the flight of the unseen ball, the eyes of Ruth watching it disappear into the stands, the Babe's foot on first base as the pitcher stands dejectedly on the mound. There is a quote on the back-flap of the dust-jacket that says the "Chicago Sun-Times" described Wimmer's illustrations as "reminiscent of some of Normal Rockwell's best."Certainly there are strong similarities, especially in the painting of the fans reacting to Ruth's homerun. But with his emphasis on key details to tell the story Wimmer offers a decidedly different perspective from Rockwell that I really liked.Ultimately, it is the artwork rather than the narrative that makes this a lyrical book.

All Star Baseball 2004 Average Customer Review: Video Game (28 February, 2003) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $29.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (23)
A new feature to this game is: Scenario Mode, which is where you play a certain part of a game like Mariano Rivera on the mound in the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded and no outs and your objective is to retire the inning without the opposing team scoring any runs. Like all of the previous All-Star games, you have CREATE-A-PLAYER. This updated feature is so much better than any other one in the previous games. You have over 300 faces to choose from, a lot more batting stances and also when you work on your player's ability points, there is no limit. Remember in 2003 where you only could use 20 points? Well, in this game, there is no limit so you can make your character the best in the game. Tip: Don't give your player all A+'s becase the game will freeze near the end. The best new feature to this game, which I love is the In-Game Save capability. So if you're playing a game during your season, you can save where you left off during the game, so when you re-load your season, it'll bring you right back to where you were. GREAT! In Season mode, a lot of different things have been added. In the General Manager's offive, there is a numerous amount of things you can do from: trading players, high minors and low minors rosters, disabled list, trading block (you recieve trade offers from other teams for the player you select), and Player Editor. What is Player Editor? Instead of just editing your created player, you can edit anyone in the major leagues as far as ability points, looks, batting stances, etc. For pitchers you change their pitches selection to your favorites. But, don't make it too easy and have all of your team A+. It makes it too easy. There is a couple things that have gone down or haven't been improved too much. One is the pitching. Yes, it is a lot easier to hit the ball because it has slowed down since 2003. But, it is a lot more diffucult to get strikeouts when pitching. It makes your pitching stats more realistic to real pitchers today. But the cathces still has some flaws in it. Not as often, but you see it happen sometimes where there is a pop-up and the ball is ten feet to the side of your fielder and he still catches it. Things like that. Overall, this a fantastic game. Many things have been improved, things have been created for better and funner gameplay and it worked. This game is definitely a must buy.
This game is very challenging, definitely. It is not like other baseball games which are unrealistically easy to play. This is not the type of game in which you will be hitting home runs with 170 pound shortstops. In the long run, however, it is a much more realistic game. The pitches are especially neat. While some games only allow pitchers to have the basic "fastball," "change," "curve," "slider," etc., this game has more specific pitches.Examples are circle change, 2 seam fastball, 4 seam fastball, knuckle curve, slurve, etc. This game is more realistic from a hitting perspective as well.At first, you will find hitting very difficult.Do not be frustrated; you will eventually improve. I suggest looking only at the strike zone, not at the ball when it is pitched. There is an option allowing the placement of the pitch to be shown, and that helps a lot. That being said, this feature by no means makes hitting easy.Unlike other games, where you just have to get the timing of the pitch down in order to hit, this game requires you to get the timing and the placement down (all in a matter of 2 or so seconds). Ultimately this a more realistic way of approaching hitting. To some it may not be as much fun as the home run filled games you can have in other games, but to baseball fans, this game will be rewarding. I have to say that baseball purists, actual fans of the game, might appreciate this game more than a kid who justs wants to play a little baseball.Getting used to the game takes a little (not too much, but a little) practice. The game is definitely geared towards the knowledgable fan.It keeps track of stats that most people don't pay attention to, like OPS and OBP.This attention to detail is very much appreciated. This game also has plenty of side features you can entertain yourself with.Like many sports games nowadays, this game has scenarios. They are enjoyable, giving you specific tasks in game situations to accomplish.Another neat aspect is the fact that you can unlock other teams, most of whom are made up of legend players. Therefore, it is possible to play with Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, Ted Williams, et al. I would recommend this game to baseball fans who have a little patience to learn the game. If you take the time to master the game (and this shouldn't take too long) you will be rewarded with a rich and entertaining game. ... Read more Asin: B000083DZR |

Of course, since 1999, all the All-Star games feature the same diffeent types of gameplay including: Exhibition, Season, Series, Home Run Derby, Batting Practice, Create A Player, etc. Well get ready All-Star lovers because this 2003 version has a brand new feature never seen before. The new feature is called "Expansion Mode." This mode allows you to build your own baseball team. First, you chose from over a dozen major cities througout the US that have never been used before such as: Dallas, Hartford, Birmingham, etc. Then you choose your team's new stadium with 6 never before used staiums. Then you choose the team's logo which includes everything from: Aviators - Tornadoes. Then of course you have a player draft to put your team together and make it come alive. The last thing is choose your league either National or American. This features is awsome! A new minor feature is in Season mode. First of all, you can create your own player and put him on the team roster before you start a season. Remember you couldn't create another player once your in Season mode? Well on this one you can! Anytime during the season you can create another player and add him to your roster. Another small feature is the Weather Forecast. On the main menu of your season there is an icon that says Weather Forecast. When you enter this option it shows you all the forecasts for all the scheduled games for that particular day. There is a huge US map that has a star on the location you're looking at the forecast for. It Below it displays the game of who versus who, the day's high and low temps with a weather picture next to it such as: Rain, Sunny, Cloudy, Overcast, etc. Then it displays the current temp, and also the wind speeds along with the precipitation percentage. This is a real cool feature. The gameplay is outstanding. The game features accurately updated player batting and pitching stances. Also it features new throwing and fielding manuevers more and more like real life. The faces are so incredibly detailed that you actually think you're at the game! The stadiums look 10x better than ever before and also include the new stadiums for Expansion mode, Batting Practice and Home Run Derby. However, there is a bit of a downside to the game's gameplay which is why I rated the game 4 stars instead of 5. In all the All-Star games the cathes are a little off to the side and not exactly lined up with the glove. That is basically the only downside to the game. Other than that this game is undoubtably amazing. This is the best of the All-Star series yet and it just keeps getting better and better from here. It's all up from here on!

Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (22)
The 1998 release consisted of all the Major League Teams at the time of the lineup. Still, the game included some brilliant graphics and a style to call their own. The graphics might seem a little flawed with their facial expressions, but the frame rate is fantastic. The game also includes a few added bits and pieces to the mane, including a home run derby, season play, World Series play, or exhibition. The game also includes vocal commentary from Ken Griffey Jr. himself, and a little bit of rapture in the mix. In exhibition mode, you can play not just against any team, but also with any stadium other than the home stadium, which makes it a little bit interesting. The game also includes a couple of special codes, including getting a home run automatically, every time Ken Griffey Jr. steps up to the plate, and even a code that gains access to special teams, including Angel Studios, the company production team that made this game. It is just a shame that most other sports games for Nintendo 64 seemed like they were flawed from the start, but with Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. it is within a class all by itself. Although many people don't sell this game or Nintendo 64 anymore, it is nice that you can get this any way that you can. Still, I prefer this over any other baseball game released for the Nintendo 64. ... Read more Asin: B00002STHH |

All Star Baseball 2004 Average Customer Review: Video Game (28 February, 2003) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (11)
Graphics 4 Oh, by the way, how many friggin cards do I need to unlock anything? Also, in the team managment portion, the game will not allow you to trade willingly with other teams. For example, you cannot trade your sub-caliber players for Bonds or Thome, and that is ridiculously LAME. Some other things that would make this game better:
Gameplay is bad. There's nothing else to say. When you do get a hit, it always goes up the middle. Baserunning is a joke, you can get thrown out at first from the outfield. Pitching is ok, but I've never enjoyed pitching on any baseball game. I'm interested in batting and running. Don't buy this game. I traded mine in for something else. ... Read more Asin: B000083DZT |
