Virtua Tennis
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
CD-ROM (14 July, 2000)
list price: $39.99

Editorial Review

Even if you're not fond of sports titles in general, the simplepick-up-and-play feel and speedy on-court action in VirtuaTennis make it a worthy addition to any game library. Sega did anexcellent job making sure even those unfamiliar with the rules andstrategy of tennis will be able to jump right into the game. With alittle practice you can pop lobs, perform an overhead smash, or evenreturn the ball with a through-the-legs trick shot.

Starting the game presents three game modes. Arcade mode is a directtranslation of the coin-operated arcade game in which you must defeatfive challengers in order to win a championship. Exhibition mode allowsyou to choose a player and then challenge any of the other availabletennis players in singles or doubles matches. World Circuit mode caststhe player as a tennis superstar, touring the world and competing forheaps of cash and worldwide rank.

If you're looking to play as one of the top tennis aces in the world, you're going to be disappointed. No Sampras, Agassi, or any othertennis giants are to be found. Rather, you're stuck with 16 smallernames including Jim Courier, Carlos Moyà, and YevgenyKafelnikov. Despite the recent boom in popularity, the women's tenniscircuit is unfortunately completely absent.

Sega's presentation and graphics are very well done and could almost bemistaken for a real televised match. Details such as the crowds, linejudges, and instant replays look stunning. It's a shame that VirtuaTennis doesn't feature the famous venues and tournaments of realtennis, but the game's imitation stadiums in England, New York, andFrance look close enough to be recognizable. The player graphics arefantastic. Each player displays plenty of detail in everything fromfacial expressions to sneaker logos. Both the TV-style overhead viewand the behind-the-shoulder viewpoints feature animation that's almostalways ultrasmooth and is guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to thescreen. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics
  • Easy to play yet hard to master
Cons:
  • You can play as real tennis players, but not as tennis superstars
  • Strictly arcade--not particularly deep gameplay

1-0 out of 5 stars doesn't workwith Windows XP
I ordered this game, but cannot make any comments about it because I haven't played it yet. Why? Because the damn thing doesn't function with Windows XP!I have tried everything, am an experienced computer user, have played other PC tennis games, but for some reason, it is not compatible with XP. If someone out there can give me some information on how to use this game with XP, I wish you would e-mail me at jrryns@syd.eastlink.ca...on the box it says that it IS compatible with XP, but I'll believe it when I see it ..... I would like to use it with Microsoft Sidewinder plug n play, but I can't even get out of the starting gate. If you are using this game with Windows, please send me as much detailed description of how to get it going as you can.....Jerlaw

5-0 out of 5 stars intoxicating mix of speed, action and eye candy
Virtua Tennis is a pixel-perfect translation of the arcade hit. In addition, the game features a number extras designed for the port over to Dreamcast. The result is a very fun gaming experience.

Like Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis sports a number of extras in addition to the arcade port. Included in the Dreamcast version are: arcade mode, exhibition mode, and world circuit mode. World Circuit Mode is most challenging as you travel the world taking part in trial matches earning money and buying items such as equipment or doubles' partners. Your techniques are also sharpened in various training stages such as the pin crasher, where the bowling pins must be knocked down with serves.

Virtua Tennis is an intoxicating mix of speed, action and eye candy. Even if Sega had done a simple port of the arcade game, Virtua Tennis would have warranted a purchase. However, they have thrown in the extra modes to warrant a MUST buy. ... Read more

Perfect Dark
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Cartridge
list price: $59.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

A first-person shooter that mixes spy and sci-fi, PerfectDark is both a thoroughly engrossing one-player experience and ariotously fun multiplayer romp. Easily one of the best games of itsgenre on any video game console, this long-awaited follow-up toGoldenEye 007 is a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners--and a damngood reason to be one if you're not.

The futuristic Perfect Dark casts players as Joanna Dark, asecret agent who becomes embroiled in a sinister conspiracy involvingaliens and an evil corporation. Gameplay is broken down into missions, each with objectives that must be unerringly completed beforeprogressing to the next mission. This is not your typical kill-anything-that-movesgame: putting a bullet in the wrong person, not keeping theright one alive, or perforating a seemingly unimportant inanimate objectcan often result in mission failure.

While Perfect Dark's solo missions play out much like those inGoldenEye 007, the game's fantastic multiplayer options areanother matter entirely. Cooperative and counteroperative simultaneous-playmodes allow for another player to join in on a mission as,respectively, a teammate or the enemy. However, the real fun here is inthe highly customizable Combat Simulator, a one-to-four-playersimultaneous-play mode that features both free-for-alls and team-basedchallenges and can include up to eight Simulants, computer-controlledcombatants of varying behavior.

Although Simulants make for decent adversaries or teammates, you'll wantto grab a friend--and an Expansion Pak, as only 35 percent of the gameis available without one--to fully enjoy Perfect Dark. --JoeHon

Pros:

  • One of the best first-person shooters on any video game console
  • Outstanding multiplayer game with huge replay value
  • Bevy of game options, cheats, and secret features
  • Excellent training mode with challenges all of its own
Cons:
  • Graphics get ugly when playing with more than two players

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly perfect...Almost...
With a game made by the same developers as Goldeneye 007 for N64, it is nearly impossible to go wrong. Perfect Dark does not disappoint. In fact, I am going to go out on a limb and say that Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye, here is why...

Graphics- 10/10 Goldeneye set the bar when it was released, and Perfect Dark surpasses it, beautifly. Although the graphics are very similar in nature, everything is much clearer and smooth looking. The guns look much more realistic, and the special effects are upgraded. It isn't a dramatic difference, but Goldeneye had graphics far ahead of its time to begin with, and this game still satisfies. In fact it does much more than satisfy.

Sound/Music- 10/10 The music, also, is quite similar to Goldeneye. It has the same unique sound to it, and every track suits the level. The music in Perfect Dark has much more of a techno-esque sound, though. The music in Goldeneye set the mood quite well, and so does Perfect Darks, except now it is much more noticeable and louder. The sound effects are great (especially the reaper), and the guns sound realistic. There are some voice-over moments that are laughable, but that's about it.

Controls- 10/10 The amazing control scheme that made Goldeneye so great has made a flawless return. You use the R button to aim and the control stick to move the cursor around, and it's easier since your screen doesn't always move with the cursor, a flaw that ruined every PS2 shooter for me. I absolutely despise the double control stick aiming scheme used in Halo and Killzone (The games weren't that wonderful to begin with, though, especially Halo, avoid that one at all costs). Anyway, no complaints here either. So far so perfect...

Stroyline/Gameplay- 8/10 If I were to complain about anything, this would have to be it, but only on a minor level. The gameplay is flawless and retains that Goldeneye feeling...but the story...well I wish I could say the same. While definitely not a bad storyline, it isn't at all memorable. Basically, it is the generic " Aliens are attacking and we must destroy their base" ruitine. During the first half of the game the storyline is well- executed, but the horror begins later on. Basically you meet up with a cute little alien named Elvis later on,and discover some interesting things. The first half are spy missions similar to Goldeneye, just more featuristic. But later on, it turns into a Halo-deal, something I wasn't looking forward to. Actually, when I played this game when it first came out, I hated the solo missions, but loved the multiplayer. After playing through the game again, I can say that the solo missions are indeed very fun, but I never found myself getting attached to them or wanting to finish the game on the Perfect Agent difficulty setting. Overall, the solo missions aren't the masterpiece that was Goldeneye, but given the fact that the gameplay is the same as Goldeneye's, it still manages to be fun.

Multiplayer- 100/10 The multiplayer is so good in this game that I decided to give it its own category. Unlike Goldeneye where you had to pick a weapon scheme, this game lets you custon design the weapons selection. Theres a whole array of Sims, too, and you can put up to 8 on at once. The nostalgia of this games multiplayer is just amazing and hard to fathom, very difficult. You can also choose from a whole plethora of Sim types, venge sim, turtle sim (They get a barrier for a long while, but they movem extremely slow, making for hilarious moments.) Difficulty settings for sims are Meat, Easy, Normal, hard, perfect, and dark. Dark sims basically can do maneuvers that humans cannot, kinda like robo-bots or something of that sort. Add 3 friends, yourself, and 8 Sims to the mix, including teams, colors, and a whole array or multiplayer schemes (king of the hill, license to kill etc) and you are setting yourself up for a indefinite blast. I can't even begin to explain how fun this is, you just have to experience it for yourself. I have played Killzone and other new-age shooters and can still say PD surpasses them to extraordinary lengths. Also, lest we forget the challenges. The challenges are extremely fun missions where you have to accomplish a certain deed, and if completed you unlock new stages, weapons, and sims for Multiplayer. You can also play the challenges with up to 3 other people, but the difficulty level goes sky high.

Multiplayer stages- 7/10 I wish Rare would have designed more Goldeneye-esque multiplayer stages. Most of the new stages are rather generic and not very innovative. There are a few great ones (sewers, ravine, and some others whose names I forget), but overall the stages have a rather dull and uninspired look. Don't fear, however, because the Goldeneye favorites are back. Facility (how called faculty or some other odd name) returns as basically a ported but slightly upgraded version of the goldeneye level. Another favorite, Complex is back, and the same can be said about Complex, basically a ported version. Temple also returns, although unfortunately I am not a fan of this multiplayer stage.

Overall- 10/10 Solo missions asside, Perfect Dark is arguably the best first person shooter ever made. The multiplayer is worth it alone, and for a petty 4 or 5 bucks, you cannot pass this game up. ... Read more

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

CD-ROM (03 July, 2000)
list price: $49.99

Editorial Review

Just when it seems 3-D fighting games have permanently made 2-D fightinggames obsolete, something like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 comes along and provesjust how deep and fun 2-D fighters can be. It's better than its predecessor inevery way, and arguably the best 2-D fighting game to grace the Dreamcast.

The amount of playable characters is enough to put any fighting fan's salivaryglands in overdrive. Beginning with favorites such as Spider Man, Wolverine,Ryu, and Chun Li, players can eventually unlock 56 characters. We had our handsfull just mastering a few of these fighters, and getting familiar with all 56would take months of intense practice. There are almost too many moves, alldepicted with superb animation and augmented by several tag-team combos. Whenthe match begins, you can pick three characters. Once things heat up, you cancall in your pals to unleash a massive move on your opponent. This addsimmensely to the game's depth, and button mashers will be in for a shock whenthey find that their mistimed tag-team moves backfire.

Visually, this game is intense. The large characters are slightly jagged aroundthe edges, but that's more than compensated for by the massive amount ofanimation frames, colorful special effects, and stunning 3-D backgrounds thatare loaded with detail. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 also delivers a sonicperformance that is nearly arcade-perfect. This is a must-buy for any fightingfan, especially those who have a couple of buddies to bash. Just be prepared toput in a lot of time in practice mode if you want to get good. --T. ByrlBaker

Pros:

  • Brilliant 3-D backgrounds
  • A massive number of characters to play as
  • Tag-team element adds a fun strategic component to the gameplay
Cons:
  • Characters were drawn at low resolution

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate fighting game - period
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes (2000.) The fourth game in the "Marvel characters versus Capcom characters" series.

Over the years, there have been a ton of fighting games, but as the years progressed, it became evident that one company was the supreme mastermind of the genre - Capcom. When they released Street Fighter II in 1991, it revolutionized fighting games and was frequently ripped off. Capcom used the excellent mechanics behind that ever-so-successful series to launch spin-offs like Street Fighter Alpha, as well as other fighting series, including Darkstalkers. The corporation even made a fighting game featuring Marvel comics characters which was well-received. And then, Capcom did one of the smartest things of their entire career - put Marvel and Capcom characters together in the same fighting game! This started with the classic X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, which was followed up my Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, which greatly expanded the Marvel roster. And then came Marvel Vs. Capcom, which greatly expanded the number of Capcom characters available. The fourth game in this Marvel and Capcom series, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes, arrived in 2000. Read on for my review (and sorry about the long introduction.)

We'll start off with what this game does good. The absolute best part of this game is the sheer magnitude of characters you can play as. Once they're all unlocked, you'll have over fifty characters! And you've got the all-stars from both universes. Capcom serves up classic Street Fighter characters like Ryu and Ken, along with Darkstalkers favorites Felicia and Morrigan, and even Mega Man! Capcom's got a ton of their most popular characters too, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and pretty much all of the X-Men. The game even features new characters from both franchises. Unlike the first Marvel Vs. Capcom, which played pretty crappy with console controllers, this time around the scheme was done AROUND the controller, so it plays WAY better than its predecessor. The 128-bit backgrounds look GREAT. The soundtrack's catchy, too, even if some beg to differ. The system used for unlocking characters/stages/outfits/etc. is also well-done. You earn points every time you play, and these can be used to buy the bonus features. For the most part, the game takes everything from the original Marvel Vs. Capcom, and improves it. There is very little wrong with this game. If you liked the original, you're probably going to like this one even more.

As much as I like this game, I do have a few complaints. The one that seems to get the most attention is the characters being drawn at a low resolution. Why did Capcom do this? The backgrounds are simply stunning, so I really think a little more work could have gone into the character models. Likewise, too many characters have been altered too much - Chun Li, Sakura, and M. Bison have been altered so much that they aren't even fun to play as. Likewise, many of the characters are just weak when compared to others - Roll is just pathetic and essentially comes off seeming like a "poor man's version of Mega Man." The new characters were unnecessary. Though cool, their omission would have allowed for other great Marvel and Capcom characters to be in the game - I'm sure plenty of other gamers would have liked to have been able to play as Daredevil, Dr. Octopus, The Punisher, Bass, and Proto Man. My biggest complaint is that the game is no longer in production - they don't make Dreamcasts anymore, and for reasons only god knows, the Playstation 2 and XBOX versions were produced in limited quantities. Still, these flaws can ultimately be neglected. For everything this game does wrong, there are about ten things it does right.

My final verdict is simple. If you like Capcom's fighting games, this is a must-buy. It's my favorite fighting game of all time, and you'd be a fool not to buy it if you're into the genre. Capcom knows good fighting games, and this is as good as they come. It's tough to find due to the poor distribution, but trust me - it's worth hunting down.

4-0 out of 5 stars 56 characters that you can select to fight

Yes this game has 56 characters that you can completely control.

Unlike part 1 where there were special characters that can only help you, but not fight for you. In this part 2, you can completely control everyone.

I am rating this game 4 stars rather than 5, because there is one very annoying factor: In order to unlock the secret fighters, you have to play the game for MANY, MANY hours in order to earn points. You use the points as money to unlock the secret fighters.

5-0 out of 5 stars badmanstylin
Marvel V.s Capcom is the dreadest game after the first Marvel vs Capcom. There are endless possibilities cool combos and stuff.
I've played with nerly every game you can think of, but my best team might be Guile,CharlieWith over 56 pleyers to play with, who can blame me? This is a must get for all true believers!

P.S I also like to play with Hayato, and Silver Samurai (did I spell it right?) and Venom not to mention Wolverine! So this is beyond repair over and [...] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Metal Slug X
Metal Slug is one of the most popular Arcade Games made by Snk (formerly for the now deceased Neo Geo home console).

The games were ridiculously priced at $300 but now with the power of the internet and emulation, you can play these games for free.

Metal Slug X is an enhanced version of Metal Slug 2. In Metal Slug, you play as war hero fighing nazi soldier's and freeing pows, and blowing up tanks with machine guns and high bazookas!!

In this version, the game has been enhanced to include deadly Aliens from outer space!!! (Obviously borrowed from Aliens and Duke Nukem).

Tthere are 5 different sequels to Metal Slug and this a great one to that collection

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Metal Slug X-Super Vehicle 001 is Nazca's third run-n'-gun platformer game in the Metal Slug Series. It was first released for arcades and the Neo-Geo in 1999, and was later put on Playstation.

In Metal Slug X, you play as soldier Marco, Tarma, Eri, or Fio fighting against Saddam lookalike Morden's army. You have a variety of power-up weapons, from the homing Enemy Chaser to the crawling Iron Lizard to the powerful Laser Rifle. When you have no weapon, you have a pea-shooter pistol, and if you shoot while close to an enemy, you use a knife or a hatchet to save ammo and for extra points. Levels have nice variety, are well drawn, and have funny little things going on in the background. Graphics are very cartoony, with unbelieveable animation. Enemies don't just robotically attack you, they run away in fear, they cook dinner, they talk with eachother, they even go to the bathroom. Bosses are huge, powerful, and exciting, not even causing any slowdown. Yes, you have infinite continues, but if you want to really beat the game and get true satisfaction, you'll have to do it on one credit.

But the highlight of the game, is the slugs. No, not garden pests, but huge war machines. There are a huge variety for you to drive, or even fly, such as the Plane Slug, the downward-firing Slugnoid, the standard tank Metal Slug, and even the Camel Slug. They each seem to have their own personality-the Metal Slug even flinches when hit!

The game itself is extremely fun and playable, and the multiplayer mode can get quite hectic. If you see it, buy it, but the Neo-Geo version is much better, as expensive as it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metal Slug X
In the land of me too 3D everything this game is very refreashing even for a PS2 owner. The game a very good conversion from the arcade version of the slug series. This is the type of game that you play just to enjoy the art work , as you blast your way through each level the games art and background just get better and better.Unlimited continues mean you will beat the game in one sitting but the skill and and challenge of trying to do this without the continue along with co-op 2 player will have you stomping through many times.Action , Comedy , 2D shump.. ... Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Game Cartridge (17 May, 2001)
list price: $34.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

One of two new Zelda games for the Game Boy Color, TheLegend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is geared towards the cerebralgamer, with its heavy focus on puzzle solving. The Triforce has alertedLink to trouble in the land of Labrynna, where the evil sorceress Veranhas possessed Nayru, the Oracle of Ages. Veran travels back in time, setting up events that lead to a world where evil dominates. It's up toyou to help Link stop Veran and set things straight.

Game mechanics and menus are similar to those found inLink'sAwakening, also for the Game Boy. As in almost every Zeldagame, you have to traverse eight dungeons and find eight key items. Theharp of time is vital to your quest--it's required to manipulate eventsand stop Veran's rewriting of history.

Although this game is extremely enjoyable on its own, you'll want touse it in conjunction with its sister title:Oracle ofSeasons. After you complete one game, you'll be given apassword that lets you begin with all your items, statistics, andprogress intact in the other. Certain characters will appear only byplaying both games. By using a link cable, players can trade items.Game Boy Advance users will find a store that's exclusive to them.

While this is an excellent game, it might be too complicated foryounger gamers or those looking for mindless fun. --Raymond M.Padilla

Pros:

  • Dozens of crafty puzzles
  • Great as a standalone; outstanding in conjunction with its sistergame
  • Nice bonuses for Game Boy Advance owners
Cons:
  • Lots of reused sound effects from previous Zelda games
  • Longtime gamers might find the story and level design contrived
  • Be prepared for many puzzle-induced headaches

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game ever
This game is awesome beyond all of the zelda series. It has a excellent story line and is perfect,.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legend of Zelda:Oracle of Ages.......
One thing I absolutely despise about alot of Gameboy games, anymore, is how you have to buy them in twos just to be able to finish them. Such is the case with Legend of Zelda:Oracle of Ages & Oracle Seasons.Originally planned as a trilogy, this two-part adventure is exceptionally good which is why I highly recommend that you add them to your collection.
It all begins in Oracle of Ages. Veran(The Sorceress of Shadows) kidnaps Nayru(The Oracle of Ages). Because Link feels directly responsible for her kidnapping(as you find out while playing the game), he sets out to find her and save her. With the Harp of Ages, he travels between the past and present meeting familiar faces (some of which you'll recognize from Ocarina of Time)in his effort to make things right. That's when the storyline deepens and the fun truly begins. Rest assured, though, he's not alone in this one. Along the way, he enlists the help of Moosh, Dimitri, and Ricky.
Out of two games, in my opinion- this is the harder game of the two...but the most rewarding. I think Capcom did an outstanding job with their first effort in the Zelda series and I hope Nintendo continue to let them develop future installments for the Gameboy and the Gameboy Advance.
Again, I highly recommend you add these games to your collection. They're awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars The series just get better with every new game!!!!
I like Ages because it has lots of puzzles. I love puzzles better than fighting, so I chose this game as a favorite beacuse the storyline is really clear and has great sounds and graphics. I'm not saying Seasons is bad, though. The best part in when you link up, because you really get more out of your games. I would recommend Ages to anyone that loves puzzles. ... Read more

Super Punch-Out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good game but it might not be for all boxing fans
Super Punch Out is the sequel/follow-up to Mike Tyson's Punch Out or Punch Out (depending on which version you have) and like the original Punch Out, it's a beat em up and knock em down type of boxing game that makes fun of itself.

Now Super Punch Out isn't as comedic as "Ready 2 Rumble" but it does have some funny moments in it like when you slug your opponent so hard that they look like their going bean up their lunch and whenever you knock down the Narcist Prince, that's just funny.

Only 3 characters from the original have returned, Bald Bull, Mr. Sandman and Super Macho Man. With a cast of all new boxers, with all new styles and definitely new challenges, Super Punch Out will keep you entertained.

I will admit that this might not be for all gamers. There is no mobility like Punch Out. Basically you dodge, duck and throw punches. And eventually, you do get a little tired of this one. I'd either look to buy this one cheap or rent it first (if you can). It's still a good game but it is really to each their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alsome Game
Man this game is one of the best games on the snes. Idon'thave this game but every time I go to a Hotel I order it like 4 or 5 times. This game is really challanging there are 3 or 4 leagues that you play in and each 1 is harder than the 1 before.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER FOR SNES THERE ARE ONLY ABOUT 3 REALLY GOOD GAMES THEY ARE SUPER PUNCH OUT, WWF RAW, AND BATTLETOADS AND DOUBLE DRAGON.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
Im an owner of Ps2, but I always find myself going back to Super Nintendo. When i do go back, I mostly play two games.Baseball Simulator 1000, and Super Punch Out. The PlayStation2 takes the Gran Turismo franchise to new heights in thethird edition of the venerable racing series. The graphics are sure to grabyou--the cars and tracks are awe inspiring, and there are some incredible lightingeffects. This game is much more than eye candy, though.

The gameplay in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is the same as its predecessors;fans of the previous games will feel right at home, while newcomers will be ableto pick things up easily. There are more than 150 cars from which to choose, andplenty of tracks upon which to race them. Arcade mode works well for a quickfix, while simulation mode provides outstanding replay value. The sound effectsare impressive--each engine has a unique sound, and tire screeches fromdifferent cars sound noticeably different. The soundtrack is a good mix oforiginal compositions and a wide variety of recording artists, including MotleyCrue, Raekwon, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg.

One minor flaw with the game is its relatively predictable artificialintelligence. Computer-controlled cars follow distinct lines, and you'll be ableto pick up the patterns after a few races. Considering how far the graphics havecome since the original Gran Turismo, it's disappointing that the AIhasn't progressed similarly. Despite this, GT3 remains an outstandinggame. Few games offer its combination of high quality and immense variety.--Raymond M. Padilla

5-0 out of 5 stars Only GT4 is better!!
The only driving simulator that is better is GT4. If your expecting an easy arcade like racer with Lambo's and dressed up import's go try NFS or some other title. Gran Turismo is the measure by which all racing game's are compared to, and justifable too. Realistic graphic's and physic's are great. Expect to take a lot of time learning to drive. This is not a casual racer. Only two comment's/annoyance's are the music and number of car's. 1. Cars: Or should I say lack of car'
s. I think there were more car's in the original Gran Turismo(not sure I could be wrong). Also I think that more of a variety of car's. After winning the 50th Nissan Skyline(not sold in USA) it get a bit annoying, lol. This is fixed in GT4 so don't worry too much(number of car's). 2.Music: Aside from Lenny Kravitz and Motley Crue the sound is pale in comparison to GT2(The best of Gran turismo soundtracks). This also goes for GT4(apart from Van Halen's-"Panama"). It seem's as if they spent so much time and effort on other area's and music was an afterthought. In the first two (GT and GT2) soundrtack's they were an integril(I know I spelled that wrong, lol)part of the experience. Only serious racer's and car nuts need to apply.

1-0 out of 5 stars I MEAN NO STARS!
This game has bad graphics.
It has sucky cars.
It is so hard to play on different tracks.
The cars dosn't even have a driver in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The King of All Racing Games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been a fan of Gran Turismo ever since it's debut. The game is so addictive that I have played it for 10 hours straight! The graffics are stunning and the courses are well made. My favorite part about the game is that they brought in F1 racers. I smoke the competition every time I use my 900 horsepowered monster! Over all this game is AWESOME! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stange is good
Majora's Mask is a strange game: while it is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, it is clearly a Zelda game of a very different shade.

It begins with Link slowly trudging deep in the Lost Woods, with his trusty horse, Epona, when he is attacked by a masked and mischevious Skull Kid - who steals his precious Ocarina and Epona. Worse still, the Skull Kid turns Link into a Deku form of himself, and Link finds himself in a strange Mirror - like Hyrule. Things turn even worse when Link finds the moon slowly getting bigger over the course of 3 days...

Majora's Mask features the very same Gameplay as Ocarina of Time, with a few exceptions. The entire course of the game is set within 3 days or 72 hours - and hours seem to pass like minutes, giving a player a total of just over an hour. While this may seem off-putting, it is implemented very well - people have set schedules over the course of the game, meaning you will be pottering around the Clock Town while not in dungeons, with the promise of an upgrade - or even a new mask.

Masks, as the title suggests, play an important role - some make you run faster, talk to enemies, summen foes or sooth arguements and more. There are a total of 24 masks to collect, the reward being a mask containing "The Merits of all masks". The best of the masks are the ones that allow transformation. (Let's face it, who HASN'T dreamed of swimming as a Zora or rolling as a Goron) The Zora Mask, the Goron Mask and the Deku mask. they allow you to transforminto all your favourites from Ocarina, each with the gifts of the species - Super fast swimming, Incredible strength, and, er, spitting nuts.

Majora's Mask is harder, darker and more original than Ocarina of Time - the unique aspects of the game are implemented very well but the way the game is played may be off-putting for some. Brilliant and totally original.

P.S. the start bits kinda boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars The darkest in the Zelda catalogue
If only that damn site IGN didn't take my idea first. They described this game as the Empire Strikes Back in Zelda and it's true. It's more darker, more gloomy and at times it can even be depressing. Unlike Ocarina of Time which oozed coolness and wonderment or Wind Waker which was cheery and uplifting due to its look, Majora's Mask is quite different than other installments but in no way is it bad, it's just different.

Story: I always considered this game more like an epilogue to Ocarina of Time rather than a full sequel. At the start of the game directly taking place after Ocarina, Link is in a forest and gets ambushed by Skull Kid and is turned into a Deku(they look like tiny trees with a long mouth) and enters a portal. From here Link finds himself in Termina, a land that is gonna be destroyed by a falling moon in 3 days. So it's up to Link once again to save the day using the powers of time and this weird masks.

Graphics: Reviewing this game in 2005 with such games as Metroid Prime, Halo and Metal Gear Solid 3 of course puts Majora to shame but remembering the graphics at that time, it's more of an extension of Ocarina only darker and not as vibrant. Due to maybe the Expansion Pak or just the game itself, the game does have framerate issues and some rough textures. Beware that the Gamecube re-release on the Collector's Edition sometimes freezes the game.

Gameplay: All Zelda games pretty much to this day revolved around some kind of "gimmick": in Ocarina it was time travelling, Wind Waker was controlling the wind, Minish Cap was the ability to shrink to thumbnail size and the Oracle series revolved around time travelling and season changing. Majora's Mask revolves around, yep you guessed it, masks. Link with the benefit of 24 masks(25 if you get all 24), Link can turn into different characters such as the Deku race, Goron race(big tough creatures with a taste for rocks) and the Zora race(fish people roughly). Or there's different masks like Postman, Ghost, or Bunny mask which makes him run faster.

The other aspect for the 3rd time in Zelda's history revolves around time travelling, once in Ocarina and the other in Oracle of Ages. Only this time it's different. You see the game's clock makes 3 days take about roughly 50 minutes before the moon crashes so with the Ocarina you can go back to Day 1 and start over, even make the time go slower so you have more time. This is quite annoying to say the least since your funds, arrows and bombs revert to zero if you go back to Day 1, your items are intact, your extra stuff isn't. And also you could be in the middle of a dungeon to be really close only to be on the final day and have to reset to Day 1, which incidentally cancels any progress you made in the dungeon.

Not to say the game is bad(it's just slightly hard) but it's quite enjoyable to go through, if you don't mind it's tone anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars very very good but,not as good as 'ocarina of time'
I played the Legend of zelda ocarina of time in 1997,WHAT A YEAR THAT WAS!!!I had so much fun!then in gameinformer magazine the new preveiws page said that there was going to be a new game called 'the legend of zelda:majora's mask'it was about link going to a new land where the moon is falling and he has only 3 days to live and on the third day link has to play the song of time so that he can go back to the first day,I HAD TO HAVE IT!but then half a year later when it came out,I was very upset because when I played it,it was too easy and I beat it in almost a week!when I played'Ocarina of time'it took me almost two YEARS!but other then that it was a fun game,Very fun in fact.I really liked that you can upgrade your sword, when in 'ocarina of time'the master sword is what you see what you get!PROS TO MAJORAS MASK:There are lots of masks that you can get and they give powers(like fast running),you can upgrade your sword twice, there are new songs for link to play on his ocarina and there is a bank so link can have alot of money!CONS:you have to play 'the song of time'way to often because the moon is falling for some reason and you have only 3 days to live, finding more then half of the masks are very hard to find, the game has only four temples and they are all very hard way too short.but all in all this game is worth around $15.00,so if you like the other Zelda games try this one too! ... It's hard to articulate how incredible this game is.Every aspect of the game -- the story line, the characters, the sound effects, the music -- they all add up to an incredible masterpiece of video gaming.I've had hours of entertainment with this game, and I still get cravings to play it, even though it's over ten years old.Wow...I really can't say enough about it..it has to be experienced.Of course, you have to remember when the game was made in order to truly appreciate.Of course, if you're reading this review, you probably already know and love The Legend of Zelda.Let's all sit back for a moment, close our eyes, and reminisce.Ahhh, what a great game.We were truly a blessed generation, growing up with the Super Nintendo.

Editorial Review

WCW/nWo Revenge improves on its predecessor, WCW vs. nWoWorld Tour, in almost every way. First, the graphics have improved so that thecharacters are very lifelike and the fights are a bit more realistic. You will also see a hugeroster of familiar faces and pay-per-view backdrops such as Starrcade, Superbrawl, andHalloween Havoc. Unfortunately, the sound has not improved, leaving you with just theoohs and ahhs of the crowd plus the WCW Nitro theme. Sorry, no commentary.

The gameplay is very similar to WCW vs. nWo World Tour except that timinghas become much more important--you don't just pound the buttons for special moves. There are several game modes, including challenges for all WCW belts (some areavailable only after you unlock them), battle royal, handicapped matches, and exhibitionmatches. Furthermore, winning belts will unlock other wrestlers such as Kidman, RowdyRoddy Piper, and Curt Hennig.

Although there is room for improvement, WCW/nWo fans will enjoyWCW/nWo Revenge. --Hugh Arnold

Pros:

  • Great graphics
  • Diverse roster

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Wrestling Game RIP WCW were the BIG BOYS PLAY!!!!!!!
just 1 thing wrong with this game????? for some dam reason this game when you play BATTLE ROYAL mode it kind of TAKES OVER AND PLAYS IT SELF!!!!! why does it doe this????

4-0 out of 5 stars The best WCW game..... tho not WWF
I always hated the WCW. I was playing Warzone, Attitude and WWF titles for a long time. Then I somehow ended up owning this game and I inteneded to dissmiss it, but I found myself playing it more and more every day and eventualy loved it. I was happy to hear THQ got the rights to WWF and went from this to Wrestlmania and then the best game on the 64 NO MERCY. However, this is the foundation of where it started and I respect it for that. It brought a lot of awsome memorys and entertainment on hot summer nights. I recomend No Mercy over this, but this original version deserves your respect.

3-0 out of 5 stars a pretty cool game
they sacrificed the create a character mode but in its place are like oodles of wrestlers.this game was made during one of wrestlings hottest eras.probably still is.so the wcw had lots o cash to hire lots o wrasslers and thats why theres zillions of them up for grabs.theres the regular wcw guys, the nwo, luchadors, ravens flock, japanese superstars, losers youve never heard of before, and every other gang from that time.the only real problem is the game is very simple to beat.now im not normaly one to complain about easy video games but this game got beat literaly in under 4 hours after i bought it on every level.its better if youre getting this for a kid i guess. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute classic
DKC is quite simply one of the greatest games of all-time and, as others have mentioned, it still stands up today. A classic game never dies and just like any other media, classic computer games seem to age extremely well and remain as playable as they ever were when they originally came out. DKC has everything: Fantastic graphics, great music & sound effects and, above all else, totally addictive playability on a par with the Mario games.

It's now over a decade since this game came out on the SNES and all I can still say is that Donkey Kong Country is worth buying a SNES for...even today! ... Read more

Chrono Trigger

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diamond of All RPGs!!
Chrono Trigger is, without a doubt, the best RPG ever released on the Super Nintendo and quite possibly, the best one ever made.It is so far above and beyond the norm that to dislike this game would indicate that you have some kind of mental problem.

I will not bother with a plot synopsis since I am sure most of the other reviewers have written one already. There are several things unique about this game that make it outstanding.First of all, this story centers around time travel, which is very unique for an RPG.You can travel to the distant future, or you can travel back as far as 65 million BC to the stone age.Time travel is the heart of the story and is executed incredibly well.It also allows you to meet new characters (Ayla, Frog and Robo) and visit places that existed in the past and the future but not in the present.

Another aspect that Square added to this game is the Tech skill. This feature is fantastic! Each character is able to learn special techniques that he or she can use in battle. Some are physical attacks, others are magic attacks. But the special quality here is that you can use those special abilities in combination with one or two other characters. When used with 1 other character it is called a Double Tech. With 2 other characters it is a Triple Tech. The triple tech's are very powerful, but can only be used if Crono is in the party.

The music in Chrono Trigger is excellent and very memorable.I have never heard such a great soundtrack in any game before. The other sounds in the game were great and realistic. The graphics were beautiful. And unlike other RPG's the characters are all full-sized instead of sprite-sized.You can actually make out the characters' faces and clothes in this game.

The characters are wonderful, with no annoying cliches (Except maybe Marle, the princess) or personalities. Each one is distinct and has his or her own role in the story. The development of each character is very well done. You will not be left wondering about anyone's past or anything like that.It is all incredibly well thought out and executed.

I can't say enough about Chrono Trigger.I first played it almost 10 years ago on the SNES, and now I have it on Playstation (Part of a collection released as Final Fantasy Chronicles along with another classic game, Final Fantasy IV).This game is gaming at it's best!If it has any flaws, I can't think of any right now.It is challenging, interesting and visually superb. If you have never played this game before, you are really missing out on something special. And for those of you who own this game already, don't be stupid and sell it.This is one of the best games ever made on any platform, and in any genre. My advice:Hang on to this title and treasure it, because there may not be another like it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt the best video game ever made
This game is unbelieveably good.I really cant stress ehough how wonderful this game is.For its time it was Fantastic, and compared to the RPG's of today it is still right toward the top.The compelling story line, the wonderful characters and the music...the music in this game is so rich that you can really listen to the songs over and over and not get sick of them. The gameplay is fantastic.I cant stress enough how wonderful a game this really is.If you have a PS, PS2 or were smart enough to hang on to your SNES it is absolutly worth the price. This game will leave you wanting to play it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped? NOPE...
For a game with so many five star reviews one might think it is overrated, but if you haven't played it , get that thought out of your head immediatly! I'll tell you why this game is one of the greatest games games ever made...

Graphics-10/10 graphically, this game is amazing. I've seen games for playstation that have worse graphics than this. The characters and backrounds are extremely detailed in lush color. Some SNES games have a tendency to have rather boring colored backrounds, but not this game. Also, the techniques used during battle look great. There isn't much else to say other than amazing.

Music-10/10 WOW...the music is nothing short of miraculous. This game has got to have some of the best music I have ever heard in any video game, especially in the Zeal section. The music is close to the calibur of Super Metroid, which in my opinion has the greatest music for a video game. It is at the same calibur as Final Fantasy 6, tactics, 8,7 and besides those it may be the greatest soundtrack for a RPG ever made. I might think this game has THE greatest soundtrack ever made, but to be honest I didn't actually play this game till 2 and a half or so years ago, so I didn't have any memories of the game tied in with the music, and games I played when I was a kid seem to touch me in a stronger way. No complaints what so ever here.

Storyline- 10/10 The idea that things done in a different time period effects the future is not only brilliant, but it is revolutionary. You will really start to feel for the characters here, and the stroyline will grip you into the game.

Entertainment/gameplay- 20/10 Yep, 20/10, there are so many side quests to accomplish here, and every one of them is fantastic. You never know what you might unlock if you do something in a different time period. This game is pretty short, only maybe 20 hours the first time through, but if you go through and level up your characters to the max and complete all the sidequests, your looking at easily 40 hours.

Overall- 100/10. Yep, you read it right. 10/10 isn't enough for this gem, so I upgraded it to 100/10. Like I said earlier, I didn't first play this game until 2 and a half years ago, and I still loved it, prooving how great this game is. If you are into old- school RPGs then you will probably already have this game, but anyone else will love it too. I think it is innovative and up-to-date enough to satisfy even PS2 fans.
....Just get it if you can find it...! ... Read more

Mario Party 3

Game Cartridge (10 May, 2001)

Editorial Review

Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and all your favorite characters areback in Mario Party 3. This game features 70 minigames that makeyou use your N64 controller in ways you never thought imaginable. Likeits predecessors, up to four people can participate in five areas inboard-game-style play. As you traverse the board, you'll have yourchances to compete in the aforementioned minigames. Then it's all aboutbutton mashing and analog-stick twisting. The gamepad techniques areeasily explained, but some of them are tougher than they look.

The single-player story mode is an absolute chore filled with as muchwatching as playing. You're not supposed to play this game alone, hencethe word "party" in the title. Multiplayer modes include party, battleroyal, and duel. The first two are the basic free-for-alls found inprevious games, while duel mode is an interesting addition thatcombines elements from Othello and Monopoly with the minigames. Thevarious modes help shorten multiplayer game time, which was a problemin previous versions.

Mario Party 3 continues the series' tradition of being the topdog of party games. With its numerous easy-to-learn minigames, it'sperfect for when you and your friend are looking for quick, mindlessfun. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Loads of great minigames
  • Simple enough for anyone to learn
  • New characters from Mario Tennis
Cons:
  • Single-player mode is arduous
  • Tough to justify buying more than one Mario Party title
  • The required amount of button mashing and analog-stick twisting ishard on hands

2-0 out of 5 stars mario trash
This Game Sucks! It takes 10 minutes just to get the game started and by then you will realise what trash this is. The mini games are stupid and pointless. The plot sucks even though I'm not sure what the plot is to begin with. I didn't play it long enough to find out. If you want a good Mario Party stick with number 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Mario Party Yet!!!
What a great game! Now there are two new characters: Waluigi (a mix between Wario and Luigi) and Daisy (another girl character). There are over 70 new minigames and no old ones. I like all of them. There is now a story mode and a party mode. The Story Mode is a single player mode where you go through all of the boards in order to earn "stamps". If you earn all the stamps, you're done with story mode. Party Mode is where you can party with multiple players on a Battle Royal Map (from the classic Mario Party games) or on a Duel Map (2 player special map). The story is that the Millennium Star, a star born once in a thousand years, falls down by Mario and his friends. They all start arguing about who should keep it. They decide to play Mario Party to figure out who is the Superstar. You should definitely buy this game. Have fun and good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the wall!!!!!!!!!!!! a must buy for all GT fans!
This game is better and the cars are badder than ever! More tracks to race, new cars to drive, and better chances to make SOME HARD CASH!! As you upgrade your car it becomes faster and better that what the shop sold you, and there is also a chance of having race paint on your car. In GT you beat even the world champions, got the best cars, ruled the tracks, and made more than a million. Well it's time to challenge more cars, conquer more tracks, and new champs to beat! If you don't buy this game, you're missing out on some racing of a life time, Well what are you waiting for? Bump all cars in your chance of victory money! This is a racing madness. It's catching hold of you. Buy this game and rule the tracks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best GT title out.
It edges GT3 by a bit. Though the graphics arn't exactly PS2 quality (obviously), it's the most addicting game I've every played on PSOne.
The graphics are great (for a PSOne game realesed in 1999). The sounds, car SFX and soundtrack, are pretty cool. The gameplay is fun, yet manages to be realistic. A perfect balance.
I highly recommend GT2 to anyone with a PSOne or PS2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be a good driver....
...or just get the 2,000,000cr Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak car and you're good to go. Well...I guess you have to be one to get the other. But then again, there's always good old-fashioned patience. Because frankly, Gran Turismo 2 is not going to hand you anything in a hand basket...especially not the aforementioned (best in the game) vehicle. In this game, you have to work for any car worth having. GT2 isn't playing, folks. There are no super cheats or codes (yes, I looked for them) to earn you free credits, skipped races, or magic cars. The best tricks of the game are tips to tune a car properly, which car to use when, and how to avoid spinning out. Yeah, sounds fun, doesn't it?

Well, if you LOVE cars and get off on racing them, this game will be tons of fun for you. Vastly expanded from the original Gran Turismo, GT2 employs practically any car you can think of---from throwback muscle to tuned-out super cars, if you want to drive it, they've got it waiting for you. And not only do they look just as good as if you were seeing them for real, but they sound and FEEL like real cars. Each car has it's own unique driving style and sound, so you'll never be bored...maybe surprised, but never bored. You can customize your own car from the ground up (GT2 lets you customize your wheels this time...yay!) or if you can hold out long enough, you can buy the "special" models from the car distributors.

However, I do have some issues with this game. First of all, the load times can be a bit irritating and it doesn't help when you have to move to so many different screens to get around in the game. Going from a race to another race or back to your garage seem to take forever after saying no to a dozen replays and the save/do not save question that pops up after all races.

Also, I don't take well to formalities in video games. Like the original, GT2 has those wonderful licenses you must obtain in order to race in different competitions. It's like, am I going to be putting lives in danger by playing this game? Why do I need to be tested on everything from braking distance/time to my S-curve technique? I'm not going to listen to the rules anyway, so why put me through it? When it comes down to it, I am awful at those individual trials. Put me in the thick of the action and I can dominate. I just don't get it.

Finally, I wish that the races weren't so predictable and repetitive. Once you get to the point where you know that you are going to win the race before you even leave the starting line, the game gets a little lackluster. All of the other cars follow the same imaginary line (like the license tests make you follow for "optimal performance") every single time out, so I know where they are going before they get there. Why can't cars spin out for no apparent reason (damnit, I do it!) or give me a little competition? Because let's face it, once you get ahead you stay ahead...that is if you have a reasonably suitable car or you don't spin out stupidly at the final turn, of course.

Ah, but I get over the pain of constant winning quickly. I love this game. I wouldn't complain about it so much if I didn't... I wouldn't still be playing it.

P.S. While doing the long, grueling endurance races I recommend turning the sound off and listening to your own music (or nothing, if you prefer) because as much as this game is hailed for its soundtrack choices, they will drive you mad after you hear the same song fifty times in one race. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a timeless story of fighting for what is right (and love)
After playing Xenosaga, I was quite eager to pick this game up in some way.Unfortunately, somehow Crash Bandicoot made the greatest hits collection, and great games like Xenogears are forgotten, but I was fortunate enough to drop the name near a kid who had a cousin who had a copy, which I was glad to purchase, since the cousin didn't like it.

I must admit, I was somewhat disappointed with the battle system.Although it can be fun at times, it lacked the luster that the Materia and Sphere Grid systems had in the world of Final Fantasy, simply making battles mediocre button pushing. The slightly dull combat system wouldn't have been so bad if battles had taken any strategy, but, for the most part and with a few exceptions near the very end, battles are mostly just using your strongest combo and healing yourself when necessary.Once you get Billy in your party, you become practically invincible, since he is able to heal the entire party for more than 300 HP for a paltry 4 EP.The best aspect of the game's combat system, however, would be the gear system.Although not used as well as in Xenosaga, Xenogears makes gear combat fun by separating it from the status of the characters, but also giving the gears abilities based on the abilities of the character riding them.Fighting in gears, however, is always done in a way that you can't win without them, or you can't use them. The only times you'll have access to your gears is on the world map and in places with large enemies that would crush a party on foot. This is once again a place where SquareSoft could have added strategic elements (benefits of battling in gear Vs. on foot, an element used brilliantly in Xenosaga), yet decided to opt for simpler battles for a more complex story line.

The music in Xenogears, composed by the brilliant Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross fame, was terrific for it's time, but with the quality sound that the PS2 is able to put out, Xenogears music will just get dull, especially to the ear of one who has played Xenosaga. Also, like in many other RPGs, Xenogears music is extremely repetitive, especially during the second disc. The theme song for this game was done by Joanne Hogg, and is very
similar to the theme songs from Xenosaga, using the exact same instrumentation and style, yet Hogg's voice just has that enchanting quality which I haven't yet tired of.

Xenogears' story is where it shines, and earns its entire five stars.Xenogears takes elements of religion, fantasy, and sci-fi and mixes them to create the uplifting, suspenseful story of young
Fei's search for the truth (and escape from it) in a world of lies.Enter the character of Elhaym, the beautiful soldier who happens to stand at odds with Fei due to her birth and origin, who changes Fei forever by showing him the joy of love. Each character has his or her individual motive, from the villains to the heroes, each trying to find what they most desire. Some wish for power, others for love, and others simply answers to life's most difficult questions. From the beginning of the first disc, you are propelled from Fei's quiet existence in a small village in the woods toward the flying cities of Shevat and Solaris to the paradise Mahanon. The second disc, unfortunately, falters, as the action is greatly reduced, and the game becomes almost a series of monologues telling us what happened and how.For a good example, imagine if the scene where
Luke and Han rescue Princes Leia in Star Wars were replaced with Luke and/or Han sitting in a chair saying, "We then traveled to the Death Star to save the Princes. We found out that she was being held in a certain cell and saved her, but on the way out, we encountered some guards (picture in background of the heroes and storm troopers engaged in fighting), we only survived by jumping down a hole into a trash compactor..." etc. This gets somewhat obnoxious, but I'm sure that this was only done to save space and avoid the obvious irritation of having a third disc for the end movies. If you're completely into the game's story, you won't mind the dialogue bits too much, since they allow you to skip over some annoying bits that would keep you from getting to the incredible conclusion.

For those Xenosaga Fans out there, this game will make a great hold over until Feb. 15, when Episode 2 comes out.I know I'm going to be at Wal-Mart at opening to get my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story and Great Game Play
This RPG has one of the most intricate and interesting storylines I have ever played. You are introduced to a number of characters with complex storylines and realistic emotions.I would go into more detail, but i don't want to give any away. But let's just say that it involves warring nations, genetic engineering, and the destruction of GOD.One of the interesting aspects of the game, however, is the fighting style.Unlike the Final Fantasy Games, or Star Ocean types, this fighting style involves three types of attacks: strong medium and weak.Through combinations of attacks, you can create special moves that deal extra damage. Also, fighting occurs either in hand to hand combat or in gears, which are giant fighting machines that have limited fuel.I don't know what else to say, but trust me that you will not regret playing this game. Also, this game takes awhile, but it's a blast. The unique fighting style also adds a lot to the game and the animated sequences enrich the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite RPG of all time
Xenogears is one of the best RPG that I have ever played. The unique use of anime, romance, tragedy, and music all come together to create a great gaming experience. This story has a lot of plot twists and every time that you think that you might have discovered some truth in the game, you get surprised when you find out more details that you were not previously aware of.

The music is great and I enjoyed it so much that I got the soundtrack. All the main characters in the game have their unique histories and perspectives that keep the story going. Expect to spend about 80 to 100 hours to complete this one. ... Read more

Front Mission 3

Editorial Review

An excellent science-fiction-themed strategy game with role-playingelements, Front Mission 3 is the first installment of the popularJapanese series to make it stateside. In a future where giant robots known as"Wanzers" are the war machines of choice, you are cast as a civilian test pilotwho gets swept up in an international military conspiracy surrounding a weaponof mass destruction. The majority of the storytelling occurs via cut scenes andmenu-driven "event" screens, with the game's "network"--a virtual computer thatsimulates Web and e-mail, among other things--providing additional backgroundinformation and character interaction.

Front Mission 3 features a rich battle system that makes the game easy tolearn but hard to put down. The different models of Wanzers can be used "as is"or modified to change their appearance, capabilities, and equipment; since aWanzer and its pilot are controlled as one unit in battle, the pilot's battleskills and experience come into play when pairing them off during pre-battlesetup. Pilots can, however, eject from Wanzers during battle and boardunoccupied ones, or even fight on their own, David and Goliath style. Battlesare turn-based and take place in 3-D isometric environments, which can berotated to provide a better perspective. When combat occurs, the viewpointchanges to close-ups shown from various camera angles. While the battles arerelatively short, Front Mission 3 makes up for their brevity withquantity, packing well over 100 hours of highly addictive gameplay on its onedisc. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Topnotch turn-based strategy battles
  • Intriguing storyline filled with melodrama and plot twists
  • Highly stylized art design
  • "Double feature" scenario adds replay value
Cons:
  • Some "network" features are more trouble than they're worth

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all...
Front mission three is a turned based battlefield rpg. the graphics are amazing considering there ps1 and the story is very deep with several twists and betrayals. The online section has some interesting qualities but I found the email system rather useless, if you read the text between battles anything you get off the "net" was just reapplying the same message. Though you can get a rather powerful wanzer late in the game through email and web addresses. I enjoyed this game, kinda a Xenogears meets Vandal hearts mix. I would highly reccomend this game to any rpg fan or those who are into giant missle firing robots. thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Aren't There More Games Like This
I'm about halfway through, meaning I've spent about 20 hrs so far, and I really must hand it to Square, this is a great game. The cinematic battles, the mech upgrades, and having money in the game, really make this challenging and fun.Any game that gives you the freedom to spend money and configure things is on the right track in my book.

My only criticism would be that they are trying to be an RPG.Oh, and this isn't an RPG in my book. They have some RPG trappings around, all around, in fact, all over the dang place. There's a lot of talking heads talknig, and sometimes that seems to eat up your time when really, all I want to do is check the shop for new upgrades and then get out to mech killing.

I with Agetec would make something like Armored Core Tactics or something. There should be more turn based combat games that aren't in a fantasy setting.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like turn based strategy, this game is for you!
This title is the first World release of the great Front Mission series of games from Square before it's Square-Enix merger.
If you enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics, this is the next best thing in the genre of turn based sci-fi strategy from Square during the Playstation's reign. ... Read more

Vagrant Story

Editorial Review

Vagrant Story is one of those games that wows you at thestart--a big "WOW!" in this case--but maintains only a tenuous hook inthe long haul. In this mix of action/adventure and fantasy role-playing,players are cast as a Riskbreaker (think one-man army) namedAshley Riot, whose pursuit of a villainous cult leader takes him to themysterious city of Lea Monde.

The highly stylized graphics in Vagrant Story are easily some ofthe best ever seen on the PlayStation, and give the game a gorgeous, distinctive look to match its somber tone. Cinematic story sequencesblend in almost seamlessly with gameplay, which takes place in 3-Denvironments (viewed from a third-person perspective) that can berotated to provide the best angle.

Vagrant Story features a rich battle system that's built on bothstrategy and quick reflexes. In addition to character statistics, weapons and armor have detailed numbers of their own and can bedisassembled, assembled, or even combined to create new items. Hand/eyecoordination factors heavily into combat, as Ashley develops offensiveand defensive battle abilities that require perfectly timed buttonpushing in order to be used.

Unfortunately, it's all too easy to get bored with VagrantStory. The painfully linear gameplay here doesn't rise abovekilling enemy after enemy in room after room, and (oh boy!) solvingpuzzles by manipulating boxes. If not for the wholly intriguing (butsparsely littered) plot, one would be strongly tempted just to leaveAshley to rot in the catacombs beneath Lea Monde. --Joe Hon

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Dungeon Crawler that i've played
If you want to know if this game is good or not without having to read paragraph upon paragraph just read this review. Bottem line is is that if you have some sort of Dungeon crawler fetish this is your thing. It's a dungeon crawler with heavy RPG elements and thats it. So if you like box puzzles (many many) and demons and such (many many). Not to mention that all you ever do is do the to of the above (no mini-games or diversion or nothing!) then this games for you (only one paragraph! ha:)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Games Ever Made for Fantasy Fans
Recently on G4 Tech TV I was watching "Filter", and they were counting down the top 10 underrated games of all time, and to my amazement and joy, Vagrant Story was rated the #1 most underrated game ever. There could be no title more worthy, and it saddens me that it has a 4 star average here on Amazon, though it's not really suprising.

Vagrant Story was one of the final Square games to come out for the PS1, and went by almost unnoticed. I didn't actually play it until it was a couple of years old. The graphics are without doubt some of the best ever seen on the PS1. I wish we could have had voice overs in this game, but such things were still pretty uncommon on the PS1. The sound is very good, light on music and heavy on creepy, atmospheric sound effects that really enhance the feeling of being lost in the huge mazes of buildings, tunnels, and dungeons.

As it is, the dialogue is absolutely exceptional, and the story is complex, twisting, and really makes you think. Good and evil end up not being quite what you think they are. The story has a heavy emphasis on a religious, crusader/inquisition type group of characters, as well as incorporating sorcery and magic. I could never explain how great the story and characters of this game are...it's just magical. The world just sucks you in.

The entire game takes place in an old abandoned ghost town on an island called Lea Monde. It is one of the most phenomenal environments ever created for a game. Much of the game takes place underground in old tunnels, vaults, caves, storage areas, and a huge variety of buried rooms, but there are also many areas where you emerge and have to explore the city aboveground. The feeling of the game is very lonely, and the old abandoned town of Lea Monde is amazing to explore.

The amount of detail that was put into this game is just incredible, and it is evident at every moment just what a labor of love it was for those who made it. Not only is the game itself exceptional, but the plethora of details they incorporated makes it an all time classic. For example, on the map screen, every single room in the game (and there are a lot) has it's own unique name. There is one dungeon where every room (and there are at least 30) is named after an implement of torture! It's just great.

There is a huge variety of enemies, and an in game encyclopedia that fills up as you encounter them. Combat is very difficult, and it seemed to me at first even too difficult, but once you get the hang of it, this game has one of the most fun, and definitely most unique, combat systems ever devised. With each swing you take, you can choose where to aim on the enemy (left or right arm, legs, body, or head!), and depending on the enemy, armor, and what type of weapon you are using, you will have a different %chance of hit and damage. There are about 6 or 7 types of weapons (blunt, piercing, slashing, etc.) and a HUGE variety of different weapons within these categories. Within this there are different gems that can be attached to your weapons to make them more efficient against certain types of enemies, give them elemental attributes, etc.
Truly, this game has an almost intimidating amount of detail, but that's what makes it so great. You can armor all parts of your body, and every single weapon and every single piece of armor is customizable by combining lesser weapons and armor in workshops that can be found among Lea Monde. Materials range from course materials like wood and iron early in the game to silver and platinum materials later. Weapons have to be created and specialized in for different creature types. For example, I usually had a spear I used against dragons, a holy mace and a holy dagger for undead and zombies, and an axe that was most effiecent against humanoid creatures. Plus, you can actually name every weapon you create, which adds an awesome finishing touch to your arsenal.

There is so much about this game that is great that I could go on for another hour and hardly scratch the surface. This game is thought provoking, its deep, and it is CHALLENGING. Not for wimps! There is so much to explore, so many hidden features, such endless customization, this game just never gets old. And, it has a new game plus feature, so you can replay it with all the skills, equipment, and magic you've acquired. Damn, I didn't even touch on the magic...there is a huge variety of magic spells you can learn as well!
I've played through it probably 3 times over the past few years, and it remains fun every time I play, and I still haven't maxed out Ashley Riots potential.

This game may not be for everyone. It is hard, confusing, and very deep. But for those of you that love fantasy games, a good story, great characters and dialogue, tons of character/equipment customization, and a big challenge, give this game a try. You can get it for cheap now, and even though it's a little dated, it may be one of your best game purchases in quite awhile.

On a final note, I'm thrilled to know that the people who are responsible for this game and for Final Fantasy Tactics are the main creative force working on Final Fantasy XII right now. It should be phenomenal! I can't wait.

3-0 out of 5 stars Both Good and Bad
I hardly even know where to begin when it comes to an overrated game that turns out to collect dust in my room.I bought Vagrant Story over a year ago.Tried it, like the battle system, and then found myself hating it.

The game play goes as follows: You start in a dungeon...there are cut scenes from time to time, but none of them make any sense...you run around by monsters and fight. You see the monsters as you are fighting them as there are no random battles.A menu pops up after you click near a monster such as, Head: 0, 100%, Right Leg: 2, 85% and so on.From there you choose which part of the body you want to attack.Sometimes you make NO hit points against the monsters because you have to work up your weapons for each type of monster. And it is impossible to make a master weapon against all monsters.More than one weapon has to be leveled up for different monsters, and many times weapons have to be changed in midst battle which is annoying. The other complaint I had in this game is that the only way you can heal yourself is either finding a save point or using a curing item. This doesn't sound so bad, but curing items CANNOT be purchased.Instead they only can be found fighting monsters.I never seemed to have enough curing items.By the end of the game, things still didn't seem to make sense. The conclusions were unsatisfying and overall pain in the neck.

The last complaint I have of this game is the feeling I got from playing it.The color scheme is bad.Everything was shades of brown or blacks and occasional greens and reds.It was a depressing feel to it, and it seemed like I never saw the light in that game.

However, I can still give this game some credit.I believe that it was an attempt of a good thing. There were bad qualities about it that if only fixed a little, this game could've been great. The battle system was actually fun at times, but when things got tough and a new type of monster approached, it took way too long to level up a weapon.
I thought for its time, the cut scenes looked nice. There are no special movies throughout the game, just a short one as an intro before you start your game up.

It is possible to enjoy this game.I found myself struggling through it, but I knew a couple who actually half ways liked it.It isn't a masterpiece in my eyes, but it had potential I think that didn't see the light of day.

Pros:
Innovative battle system
Well done cut scenes for its time
New Game Plus + feature

Cons:
Dull game, hardly any change of scenerybesides dungeons and boxes
Confusing Plot - (yet it was deep)
Bad color scheme: browns, browns, tans, green, and more browns
Annoying weapon level up system
