Conker's Bad Fur Day Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (08 March, 2001) list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Conker's Bad Fur Day is for adults, the ESRB has rated thisgame Mature; it should not be bought for--or played by or around--children. That stated, the story of the game is the following: Conker's very good night turns into a very bad day. He has to deal with a crazy and abusive world, all while suffering through a massive hangover. Conker encounters abusive paint pots; jabbering dung beetles; trigger-happy, scar-faced Tediz; and a belligerent giant, with only a frying pan as a means of self-defense. He is resourceful, however, and makes the best of his situation. The game combines elements of 3-D exploration, combat, and puzzle solving. It features cinematic cutscenes, movie parodies, facial expressions, dozens of unhinged characters, and 1- to 4-player deathmatch games in a variety of styles. ... Read more Reviews (165)

Metal Gear Solid Greatest Hits Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (05 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic. Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offeringtips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart Pros:

Mega Man X5 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (06 February, 2001) list price: $32.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mega Man's exploits have been taking place on a variety ofdifferent platforms for more than a decade, but recent attempts tobring old Mega Man into 3-D have largely been missteps. That's why wewere chomping at the bit to play Mega Man X5, because it marks along-overdue return to MM's 2-D roots. Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than anostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose betweenthree playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, butthe problem is that the characters are so different that this optionactually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In theoriginal Mega Man X titles, you couldn't progress until youfound a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. InX5, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber andthe X-Buster. But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of gamedesign is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge.X5 just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endlessnumber of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is MegaMan with training wheels. By Mega Man standards, this game is truly a disappointment. Onthe bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking fora simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game mightbe your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, X5 is way too easy!--Todd Mowatt Pros:

Phantasy Star Online Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (02 February, 2001) list price: $54.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Phantasy Star Online continues in the tradition of the popular series and is the first worldwide, online role-playing game for a console. The story revolves around the Pioneer Project, a plan conceived in response to the imminent destruction of the home worlds. Seven years prior, Pioneer 1 was sent to establish a colony on Planet Ragol, which included construction of the Central Dome. As Pioneer 2 is about to arrive with the main wave of refugees, a gigantic explosion shakes the entire planet, cutting off all communication with the members of Pioneer 1. Players from around the world must now unite via SegaNet to unravel the mystery. In order to form parties, the game's People Finder option allows players to locate each other on giant servers. Once inside the Virtual Lobby, players can choose up to three other team members. Language barriers between players are broken down by a communication system featuring a universal icon system, preset phrases, and keyword translations. Players can create their own character by modifying their physical appearance and personality traits. Real-time combat features many of the original weapons and enemies from previous Phantasy Star games. Gamers can play completely online, completely offline, or a combination of the two. ... Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (10 November, 2000) list price: $44.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was so close toperfection that the idea of dramatic improvements in the sequel seemedpretty far-fetched, but Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 offers so muchmore that it almost puts its predecessor to shame. The graphics arevastly improved, there are tons of new tricks to pull off, and the gamehas more secrets than the CIA. Even if you played the original todeath, there's enough new stuff here to keep you occupied for months tocome. Pro Skater 2 is all about customization. You can still play asone of the real-world skaters represented in the game, such as SteveCaballero, Elissa Steamer, and Mr. Hawk himself, but the real fun comesfrom creating your own skater and rising up through the ranks. As youconquer the massive skate parks included in this release, you rack upcash to be spent on pumping up your stats or adding new tricks to yourrepertoire. You can specialize in verts, concentrate on your streetskills, or take a more balanced approach, and the addition of manualswill let you string together tricks from either category to rack upsome amazing scores. The custom options extend to a complete skate-parkeditor that is easy enough to use that we were creating basic arenas inless than 15 minutes. It's a thoughtful addition to one of the mostpurely entertaining games ever released. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Final Fantasy 7 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The enormous Playstation console smash hit Final Fantasy VII makes a successful debut on the personal computer, converted beautifully by designers Squaresoft and Eidos Interactive. Gamers familiar with Squaresoft's popular Final Fantasy series should have little trouble grasping the seventh title's action-packed, role-playing game play. However, Final Fantasy VII's excellent documentation and intuitive controls ensure that beginners won't feel overwhelmed. Players assume the role of Cloud Strife, a defector of Shinra, the evil corporation maintaining control over the planet. As the game opens, Cloud joins "Avalanche," a resistance group determined to foil the corporation's diabolical plans. Final Fantasy VII features an extremely complex story line, offering many hours of game play (over 60 minutes of impressive cinematic sequences are also included). Final Fantasy VII's game play involves exploration, puzzle solving, and real-time combat. Players control Cloud during exploration and take on additional party members for battle sequences, which include both fantastic weaponry and dazzling spells. While the graphics are top-notch--and support 3-D hardware accelerators to sharpen the character models--the sound effects won't impress many; Squaresoft made little effort to utilize a personal computer's sophisticated sound card to its potential. Although deeply rooted in the limitations of the Playstation console (limited menu system, weak music, no voice-overs), Final Fantasy VII's highly addictive, easy-to-learn game play should provide adventure and role-playing fans many hours of enjoyment. --Doug Radcliffe Pros:

Spider-Man Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 August, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Whether you're a fan from the '60s or not even remotely familiar withthe Spider-Man comic, you will get caught in his web. You'll see that despite its few flaws and the limitations of the PlayStation hardware, Spider-Man is the best based-on-a-superhero video game ever released. A crime has been committed and (as often happens) our hero has been framed. As the game progresses, you'll find that all is not as it seems and that many of Spidey's enemies, including Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, and Rhino, are all out to squash the Spider's quest to clear his name. Fortunately, Spider-friends, such as Daredevil, Human Torch, and Punisher, are here to help Spider-Man and keep the story moving. Like the comics, ol' webhead can climb most walls and ceilings, swing from rooftop to rooftop and, of course, do whatever a spider can. With his constant webslinging and acrobatic hand-to-hand fisticuffs, it's easy to feel that you are Spider-Man. The characters and scenery are nicely re-created here by making great use of the aging PlayStation's graphics. Spidey's ability to climb walls and ceilings does present problems with camera angles from time to time, occasionally making it tough to watch Spidey as he fights his way through some of the game's levels. While it can be frustrating, the overall camera work and graphics of Spider-Man are still amazing. Also, Spider-Man's controls can at times be less responsive and accurate than they should be, and the music is surprisingly subdued and flat, but most true believers can bear these problems until Spidey saves the day. In fact, the gameplay is so good, most seasoned gamers will devour the game in day or two, which makes Spider-Man a woefully short game. Cherish the time you have in these red and blue tights; this game is escapism at its best. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Jet Grind Radio Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (10 November, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In Jet Grind Radio, you play a whacked out kid who's completelytorqued off about the system. It seems that the city of Tokyoto is not terriblykid-friendly and wants to keep things neat and pretty. You, the skater punk, figure that the only way to rebel is with your inline skates and a couple ofcans of Krylon. That kind of attitude can lead to trouble when you're in thereal world; but, in the world of Jet Grind Radio, there are no paintfumes, and it's all done in the name of fun and scoring points. Jet Grind Radio's gameplay has some of the feel of Crazy Taxi. Asyou skate, you see little floating arrows that indicate where you should go (andwhere you should be tagging). Also, like in Crazy Taxi, the pace of thegame is absolutely nonstop. There is moving traffic in the street, and nearlyeverything can be jumped, hopped, or ground. Underscoring all of this action isa DJ at the local hip-hop station, who spins cool tunes while you tear up LittleTokyoto. The game starts out with a training course that's designed to bring you up tospeed. Pay good attention to this section; it teaches you the basics, and you'retested on one of the lessons right away. Learning how to hop over obstacleswhile keeping a rail grind going is particularly helpful. After graduating into the real game, you have the option of going it cool oreasing up and figuring out how to do the flips, splits, and other midair anticsthat make this game so much fun. Once your skating skills are set, you'll learnthe spray-can side of things. You pick up cans of paint as you maneuver around(keep your eyes open--some cans are placed in those hard-to-reach places, sothat you'll have to catch serious air to get them). After securing your fill, use the left trigger and the analog to spray as you pass by areas that have beenindicated by the arrows. The game's tunes are right on schedule. Much of the Japanese soundtrack has beenretained, with new tunes rounding out the selection. The new playlist additionsgive the game that special flavor that U.S. audiences crave: Jurassic 5, MixMaster Mike, and Rob Zombie, to name a few. Much about Jet Grind Radio has "classic" stamped on it; but, of course, liking it or not liking it will be up to the individual. With its freshcharacters, cool design, great music and audio, and high replayability, JetGrind Radio is likely to lodge itself into the library of many a Dreamcastowner. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

Mario Tennis Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Connors, McEnroe, Sampras--all are OK players, but none can hold aracket to the world's greatest plumber-tennis champ, Mario. But, with enoughpractice, and a devastating overhead smash, you can work your way up to thechampionship cup. Mario Tennis's exhibition mode puts you in the Tennis Academy, where youslowly build up your character's skills (doubles or singles). As you rise in theranks by challenging other characters and upgrading your equipment, you'll playeventually against Mario himself. You can play as one of many Nintendo mascots, including Donkey Kong, Luigi, and Princess Peach. There also are a few minigamesthat will sharpen your skills and can unlock other levels. If you find a humanpartner, you can play against his or her copy of the game easily by way of alink cable. The fast and furious on-court action is easy to follow, despite the tinycharacters. The ball flies smoothly, and each opponent plays differently enoughto be a challenge every time. However, your Game Boy might suffer a tremendousbeating from the furious button-mashing that's needed to win the match. One fault with Mario Tennis is its horrid sound effects, which will havemost folks quickly reaching for the volume controls. Still, if you have patienceand strong thumbs, Mario Tennis serves up a mean game that's easily oneof the better sports tiles to grace the Game Boy. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Paper Mario Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (09 February, 2001) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Nintendo 64 owners have been patiently waiting for a decentrole-playinggame, and, at long last, one has arrived in the form of the perplexingPaperMario. World-famous video game icon Mario stars in this unconventionalRPG,which was originally announced as Super Mario RPG 2. Don't be fooled by the cutesy visual exterior of this game, which borrowsheavily from the well-established Mario universe. Yep... it's the same lovableMario who dons his familiar red overalls and unkempt moustache. However, thecatch is that Mario now stubbornly appears as a two-dimensionalcharacter--despite the largely 3-D exterior gaming environments that surroundhim. When ourflat-headed friend turns around, his paper-thin presence becomes immediatelyapparent. It's a cool gimmick, but fortunately Paper Mario is far fromacut-and-paste cartoon caper. As with most RPG titles, players must battle with several menacing enemies asthey travel from place to place on their quest. Each encounter requires gamersto strategically choose between various modes of attack. For example, Mario isparticularly handy with the hammer--thus you might opt to select hishangover-inducing hammer attack. As the adventure progresses, additionalcharacters willjoin your quest. Your ever-growing posse gives you more fighting power, aseachteam member brings new attack moves and powers worth mastering. To advancewithin the game, you'll need to pay close attention to your health meter, enemyhit points, and your ever-expanding attack options. The game starts withenemiesthat are easy to defeat, but it quickly becomes quite difficult to survivesubsequent attacks without careful planning. Unlike most RPG games, each attack sequence is enhanced by a special actionfunction. Instead of passively sitting back and watching each attack moveoccur, the player can enhance your attack by pressing a button or moving thedirectional controller at precisely the right time. As someone who has rackedupseveral hours (and more than a few snoozes) during repetitious RPG attacksequences, the action feature is a welcome addition to break up the monotonyofmultiple attacks. Fans of the traditional Mario games will appreciate the return of familiarcharacters, such as Princess Peach and Luigi. Perpetual baddie Bowser evenplaysa key role in this addictive adventure. Best of all, there are plenty ofhiddenareas and extras to uncover. Paper Mario may boast elements of theclassic platform gaming genre, as well as the traditional RPG--but itultimatelycuts through all expectations to deliver an experience that appeals to bothcasual and hard-core gamers. --Brett Atwood Pros:

Fear Effect Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 February, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Despite its unforgiving difficulty, Fear Effect is an innovativecinematic adventure that serious gamers won't want to miss. Set in a dark, futuristic world, Fear Effect has players switching back and forthbetween its three anime-style protagonists. With a story that's filledwith plot twists and heaps of what the Entertainment Software Rating Board findsoffensive, this is far from kiddie fare. Easily one of the most visually striking PlayStation titles, Fear Effectshines with Japanese-animation-inspired 3-D character graphics andfull-motion-video environments that allow for nearly seamless transitions between storysequences and gameplay. With the exception of restoring saves and changing CDs,there's virtually no game interruption. Unfortunately, it's very easy to die in Fear Effect, which not onlywrecks the game's pacing, but can be really quite maddening. Many portions ofthe game are more frustrating than challenging, requiring players to die andreload their last saved game over and over until they get things just right. And while Fear Effect's less-than-perfect controls admittedly do takesome getting used to, its real-time inventory system is just plain awkwardduring combat sequences. It's doubtful that professional mercenaries like theones you're playing would be fumbling about while changing or reloading weaponsin the heat of battle. Despite its flaws, Fear Effect does manage to keep you hooked, and is oneof those games you just have to see through to its end. --Joe Hon Pros:
