4-0 out of 5 stars Madden goes Old School
This title is far out of date by now, much in the same way John Madden himself is.Yet, in it's hey day this game provided hours of illegal dorm room entertainment. The two best features of this game are the fantasy draft and the stat keeping. With the fantasy draft you create your own team from the pool of all NFL players in a draft setting with other players or the computer. The stat keeping is also key for bragging rights amongst friends. The game play itself is entirely unrealistic, you only need two plays at most to man handle the computer. In a 60 minute game you can easy rack up 1500 receiving yards with one guy(I suggest WR No. 19 of the old school Giants). If you want to keep it real with your roots buy this game, otherwise don't waste your time and get a Playstation 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Football Game Ever Made!
A lot of people say that this game stinks, but they're wrong. Maybe the graphics aren't all that great but the gameplay is the best ever made. This game has no cheap juke it's more just breaking tackles. It also has year teams. The gameplay of this game is like older football games instead of the modern pansy ones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Madden 64 is a decent game
Madden 64 is a decent game. The worst thing about the game is the hitting. It's really bad you can dive at a player and hit him with all your might and he won't fall down. The passing is probaly the best partabout the game. It's a lot of fun to see how far you can throw it.Idon't think it's worth buying. There are a lot of better football gamesout there ... Editorial Review

Those who claim the only things that are certain are death andtaxes have never heard of the EA Sports Madden football line.Yep, it's that time of the year again, and Madden 2001 is herewith a vengeance.

There aren't as many new features in this year's version as there werelast time around, but many things have been tightened up and tweaked. The animation is better, computer opponents are more apt to mix up theirpassing and running plays, and the computer also seems to have a betterawareness of the clock.

Madden 2001 requires an obscenely powerful PC to run at fullspeed with all the graphics options cranked to the stops. Our 400 MHzPentium III test machine with a 32 MB GeForce DDR card was producing afootball slide show until we turned some of the effects down (and insome cases off). For those lucky souls with the right hardware, prepareto see playing fields and uniforms that degrade over time, perhaps themost detailed player models ever put in a football game, and evenfootprints on the field. On the audio side, we recommend cranking up theexcellent crowd noises and turning off the idiotic and repetitive play-by-playfrom Madden and Summerall.

We were disappointed with the play editor, which looked like it wasported directly from an inferior console version of the game. In fact, the entire interface appeared to be hijacked from a console, as it isn'tPC friendly at all. It's the game that counts, though, and Madden2001--like its predecessors--serves up some of the best footballaction to be had on a PC. New online leagues and other multiplayeroptions added this year sweeten the deal. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics and animations
  • New online options
  • The computer opponent has improved
Cons:
  • Steep system requirements if you want maximum detail
  • Color commentary is awful

5-0 out of 5 stars its great
its perfect the gameplay is just a little different then some of the new ones

4-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Football Games You'll Play
Although at first, you may think the game doesn't look that impressive, believe me, it is.
Although missing a bit of content that would have made it that much better, it still delievers great gameplay. If you're intending to use this with Windows 2000, you may experience some difficulties as Virus tracking software seriously interferes with the gameplay, the easiest thing to do is to shutdown all Virus trackers and start Madden, and just be patient, it will load.
You can create your own teams on Madden, although creating players is not an option. The graphics aren't stunning as more modern computer games, but they still make it a worthwhile game. You can edit the playbooks, if you want to create your own plays.
You'll want to get a decent gamepad to play the game, as the keyboard is not the best of options for improved gameplay.

However, before you go off and by this, Madden 2004 is VERY VERY soon, and it looks much better than any of the Madden games, if you're looking for a good controller to get the most out of Madden 2004, I suggest the Gravis Eliminator Aftershock. The only place I've seen it really cheaply, is here at Amazon.com

BUT, having said that, if your PC isn't up to speed to play 2004, 2001 one is a good choice game.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gimme A BREAK!!!
the gameplay of this game is horrible.if the computer is losing by the beginning of the last quarter then they just start to magically catch anything that comes their way even if you tip the pass.the blockers are constantly missing thier blocks.the recievers hardly ever catch a pass unless they are wide open and sometimes even then they drop the ball.running the ballc an be hard at times to because the defense can dive so far away.the graphics of this game are fairly adequate but i think they could be better. ... Editorial Review

Despite the tweaked graphics and artificial intelligence, NCAACollege Football 2001 from EA Sports is the same old college football gameon the PlayStation.

The third incarnation in the series, this game straddles the fence between arealistic simulation and a fast-paced action game. College football fans willhave a blast as it allows them to play as any one of the 140 1-A or 1-AA collegeteams (with as many stadiums) on its way to reaching the coveted Orange Bowl,Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or one of 17 others.

New this year is Advanced Player Control, or APC, giving players even morecontrol (and subtleties) to the action. This includes controlling any one player(you choose who you'd like to control before the ball is snapped), finding openfield and calling for the ball, and so forth. This gives the player more controlon the field, but doesn't take away from the fun factor.

The game offers up a Practice, Exhibition, and Season modes, and the Dynastymode has been beefed up to allow gamers to review and recruit players at thejunior college and even high school level to enhance their rosters. TheSituation mode is a collection of scenarios for you to battle through, such ascoming back to win a game after a bad quarter or a lousy half. There's also anew mode, dubbed the Bowl Game Playoff mode, which is essentially a do-or-die,go-for-broke game for those who would rather work their way up the ladder, elimination style, toward the National Championship.

Though these additions may sound like a lot has been added to the game thisyear, after a few hundred snaps and a dozen or so games, it really feels likepast NCAA games with a little more flair. If you enjoyed the previous versionsin the series, then no doubt you'll like this one too. It's college pigskin doneright, and there's nothing wrong with that! --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Advanced Player Control adds new subtleties to the action
  • Bowl Game Playoff mode allows players to create elimination-stylecompetitions for the National Championship
Cons:
  • Plays much like prior versions

4-0 out of 5 stars This game is very good.
This is a great game. Whre else could you have UConn be the defending champions? I've now won tha national championship with them 7 years in a row. I've also won tha Heisman Trophy 6 years in a row, and I've gone undefeated 7 years in a row. That shows that u can be any team in this game and still b a champ. You can even win with my favorit team, Army. GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY! But after a while, it gets kind of boring. One of tha best parts in tha game is tha Create A School. U can make any school and even made up ones, with any color uniforms. The only bad part is the limited number of original logos, and the fact that u cant put any logos on tha helmets. It would be so cool if you could make your school's jerseys like Miami's or UCLA's. At least the players are faster than NCAA Football 2000.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall quality game
NCAA Football 2001 is not a bad game I would give it 3.5 stars. The number of teams available really adds to it's replay value. This game doesn't have that great of graphics compared to the standard that has been set by PS2 games, however they are close to the best thatyou will find on thePSOne.The sound is very good. When your team has made a big play or a score at a key point in the game the crowd will be very loud to the point that it is hard to hear the referee's whistle. If you want a great college football game for PlayStation this is the one to get, just don't get too high of hopes for the graphics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun for College football fanatics
I played this game for a long, long, time.So why a 3 stars?I have only a PS One I just got and own like three games, so I played 2001.In its favor, the controls are smooth, the strengths and weaknesses of the individual teams are accurately portrayed and show up in gameplay. You can, with limitations, name and create players, and the stadiums, songs, cheers, and field logos will satisfy college football fans need to get "even more" of the teams they love. The game controls are smooth and intuitive, but there is a learning curve to play calling.Which I guess means its pretty deep.In the end, I was taking my hands off the controls for long periods of time, and enjoying the great recruiting and dynasty mode.Definitely the strong point of the game. The weaknesses were, and this ticked me off no end, they got players mixed up!I was trying to name my players by number out of the program, and my middle linebacker was at running back. And there were several other mixups, omissions, and additions. Further, if this happens, there is no way to fix it.None.I tried everything. They restrict you forever, even in dynasty mode from creating numbers that match players in the 2000 season.I guess they do that so you cant just change the team over every year. Then you wouldnt need to buy the next years game.I checked several teams and it seems this was pretty widespread. But don't worry, they get the quarterbacks and skill people right. Its nothing you cant work around, especially if the new star quarterback and you are going to share the same last name anyway. The graphics are PSX, no doubt, and the figures are blockyish. The AI is, well, not to be mistaken for reality. It makes clock management errors and blockers on the sidelines on kickoffs and punts have a habit of stopping and standing in the way of the runners. The single player difficulty is not high, so you can abuse it on offense.Expect high scoring games with your friends. But if you arent a nitpicker, and just want to play a fun football game, this is likely the best you can do on a PSOne, and that's pretty darn good.I'll probably get the next one on the PS2, when the price is right. Editorial Review

Take the already brutal sport of football, get rid of the refs, legalize certainperformance-enhancing drugs, and the result would look a lot like NFL Blitz2000. This home version of the eponymous coin-op arcade game tackles "no rules,no refs" football with such over-the-top playfulness that you can't help but smile whenanother player knocks yours off his feet with a late hit.

NFL Blitz 2000 re-creates its coin-op cousin with deftness, including on-firemode, which boosts a team's performance when they're playing well, and audibleplay-calling at the line of scrimmage. Four players can compete at once in Blitz2000, but the action often is too confusing for this option, so two-player games arebetter. Passing control has been improved to include an icon-passing mode for moreexacting control. Outstanding sound effects of bone-crushing tackles and trash-talkingplayers, meshed with crisp, fast-moving graphics, translate into a thrilling gameplayexperience. In two-player mode this sports action game is unparalleled. --JeffYoung

Pros:

  • Ultimate action/sports football game
  • Hilarious, exaggerated pro football action
  • Sharp, exciting graphics and excellent sound
Cons:
  • New features may not be enough for owners of NFL Blitz

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!
What is better than kickin' back with a friend and playing a quick fun game of NFL Blitz? This is the best of the series. ( introducing fire ) and I can't stop playing it with my cousin. Come ON! It's great! My friends and I kick back and play this game all the time.. it's great because of the fact there are so many interceptions and fumbles..

The Verdict - Buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars the good game
There is huge hits.Great durability and lots of fun.I highly recommend this game to all people.I like it a lot. It's my favorite game ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interception Acception
There are usually too many football video games that try to bring more special graphics displays, then the actual enjoyment of humor and feel of a actual enjoyable sports video game in the entire field of video games. The only acception, NFL Blitz, is a perfect exception to the rule, blending in some zany humor, and some incredible things you'd never expect to see in any real football game.

NFL Blitz 2000, the successful sequel to NFL Blitz, contains all of the componens of each team in the AFC and NFC. Also added to the mix are incredible zany stadiums that consist of playing football on a rooftop in the middle of a city, to the classic style of an traditional stadium. Also included are humorous codes that can change the game into a war zone. Codes like No Interceptions, changing the football into the size of an giant balloon, and even super field goals, can change the face of football time and time again. It is just too bad that can't happen in the real game, it would finally make sports fun.

While many people are now into the games for Nintendo's Gamecube, for those who still own the Nintendo 64, really need to own this sports game. It is just a first down to the ultimate gaming library. Only, if you still own the Nintendo 64 and didn't trade it in for a CD-ROM gaming system that takes longer to upload the game. NFL Blitz 2000 is that one kind of fantasy sports game, that continues to bring in the touchdowns easily. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sega's new NFL 2K is the type of game that makes a very, very good first impression. For starters, this is without a doubt the best-looking sport video game ever produced on any platform--hands down. Not only are the players more detailed and lifelike than in any other game we've seen, but they move fluidly and with such an impressive array of animations that it's sometimes hard to forget you're playing a game and not just watching one on TV. You can even see the breath of each player during cold-weather games--we're talking graphical realism here, make no mistake. But NFL 2K goes way beyond skin-deep. This is an excellent football game, with gameplay that's easy to pick up at novice level but hard to master as you increase the level of difficulty. The game's controls are the most intuitive of any we've seen, and the playcalling interface is simply the best that anyone has ever come up with for a football title. And just when you think it can't get any better, you discover features like the full-league fantasy draft, a tutorial mode, extensive game and season statistics, and excellent play and player creation options. Put simply, this game makes every other football game on every other platform look dated. Even the play-by-play and color commentary are better and more fluid than any we've seen elsewhere. If you have even a passing interest in football and are planning to pick up a Sega Dreamcast console, you owe it to yourself to get this game as well. It is the new standard by which all future football--and sports--games will be judged.--Michael Ryan ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good looks, awful gameplay
Don't pay a penny for this, folks. Move on to an EA game. There is very little in the way of actual physics calculations between players in this game, every interaction is merely a scripted animation. RBs are stopped in full stride by shoestring tackles. WRs run their routes at half speed while the DBs shadow them *IN FRONT* of their routes. Offensive line programming is horrible. Guards and tackles blow assignments on EVERY play, doubling up on a DT and allowing LBs to come free and tackle the RB at the handoff. There is no player momentum, a flaw I've noticed in a number of Sega Sports games, meaning any player can stop in mid-stride and immediately run full stride in the opposite direction. Sit back and watch the computer play: 3and out, 3 and out, 3 and out... This was an incomplete game that should not have been released. So what if it looks pretty? It plays like crap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost great.
The 2K1 version of this game is much better, if for only one reason:you can actually gain yards rushing.Just try to have a 1,000 yard season with any premier back in this (2K) version.Other than that, great graphics, good game speed, and all the bells and whistles any sports game geek can handle!

5-0 out of 5 stars for the Sega DreamCast
I thought with Playstations Madden 99 I had the only football game I'd need for years. But when my brother got the Game Cube, Playstation 2, and XBox, he gave me his Dreamcast, and a few games along with it, NFL 2K being one of them. Turns out, this is a great game. The graphics are good and game play is as good as anything on Playstation. You can force trades to create your dream team, and while you can't play a franchise, you can save your season. The passing game is a little easy, bu it makes up by making a tougher running game. And lik most of Dream Cast's sports games, it is well done and fun. Would I pick this over Madden 99? probably not, but it is a nice addition, and the two games are fun to own together. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Searching for a pigskin computer game for your football-fanatic child (especially ages 5 to 10)? If you'd rather not opt for the complicated simulation of the Madden series or the intense taunting and tackling of the NFL Blitz series, pick up Humongous Entertainment's Backyard Football.

Combining the Junior Sports Network and the famous football players of the NFL Quarterback Club, Backyard Football features all 31 NFL teams and logos, custom NFL trading cards, and fast-paced five-on-five game play. Complex football play names are simplified for young players, and control couldn't be easier with Backyard Football's simple point-and-click interface, supporting keyboard, mouse, and game pad.

One of Backyard Football's best features is its inclusion of big name NFL players, including John Elway, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice. Though the "backyard bunch" has been shrunk to pint-size form, young football fans should instantly recognize their favorite gridiron stars. A 14-game season satisfies those looking for solo play (the season ends with the Super Colossal Cereal Bowl), and a multiplayer option provides football excitement over the Junior Sports Network Internet site.

While certainly not as deep or dazzling as top-of-the-line football computer games, Backyard Football's colorful graphics and intuitive game play should please all football-crazed youngsters. --Doug Radcliffe ... Read more

This game is magnificent, as is the entire backyard series. You can choose to be an NFL team name or a made-up one.You "draft" your players and can play singles games or entire seasons. The trick plays are great and add even more fun and excitement to the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Backyard Football
Backyard Football if virtually one of the best computer games I have ever played. I'm a girl raised to like football and I even love it. At first I always lost the games I played but If you know the basic rules of football like a second nature and you have a little bit of practice with this game you'll surelyn play it non-stop. Great game I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game!
This game is so cool! I recieved it for christmas and I have barely ever stopped playing it. One of the funnest parts of the game is that you can design your own custom player and make up names for your own plays. The dances players do after scoring a touchdown are hilarious. This game passes standards that other children's football games do not even try to achieve. If you are looking for a enjoyable, funny, and educational game for your child, this is the one. ... Thirty yards is still 30 yards, no matter how small the viewing screen. Just like its big brotherson the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64, NFL Blitz 2000 for the Game Boy Color charges youthat same amount of ground for a first down.

This NFL Blitz 2000 is the portable way to play the fiercest, most brutal football game around.Illegal hits and impossible moves are the order of the day as players brawl their way to the end zones in thisfun-filled fantasy football game.

Many improvements have been made since the series first made its Game Boy debut. Football players arenow easier to see against the nearly neon green playing field. Team colors are realistically represented inthis update, too.

Blitz features full NFL licensing, so all of your favorite big-time players are present. Quarterbacks canchoose from a library of 18 plays, while the defense can select from nine standard sets. Players can takepart in either the single-game arcade mode or the full season mode. Play against the CPU, or use a linkcable to go head-to-head with another person in a bone-crunching, no-holds-barred, no-move-is-illegalpigskin melee. --Bill Hutchens

1-0 out of 5 stars It just ain't fun like this
Don't get me wrong, I love playing NFL Blitz, but the portable versions are just godawful. While the first GameBoy Color version of Blitz is fun at first, it quickly wears thin.First off, you can barely see the football, next the graphics are really, really blurry (especially when you play it on an old GameBoy in black & white), and sometimes the controls are unresponsive. Now, I'm not saying the NFL Blitz games are bad games (most of them anyway, the recent GBA game is horrible), but you should take any other version of a Blitz game; whether its on PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, or XBox; over this any day.
