Madden NFL 2001 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (23 August, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Those who claim the only things that are certain are death andtaxes have never heard of the EA Sports Madden football line.Yep, it's that time of the year again, and Madden 2001 is herewith a vengeance. There aren't as many new features in this year's version as there werelast time around, but many things have been tightened up and tweaked. The animation is better, computer opponents are more apt to mix up theirpassing and running plays, and the computer also seems to have a betterawareness of the clock. Madden 2001 requires an obscenely powerful PC to run at fullspeed with all the graphics options cranked to the stops. Our 400 MHzPentium III test machine with a 32 MB GeForce DDR card was producing afootball slide show until we turned some of the effects down (and insome cases off). For those lucky souls with the right hardware, prepareto see playing fields and uniforms that degrade over time, perhaps themost detailed player models ever put in a football game, and evenfootprints on the field. On the audio side, we recommend cranking up theexcellent crowd noises and turning off the idiotic and repetitive play-by-playfrom Madden and Summerall. We were disappointed with the play editor, which looked like it wasported directly from an inferior console version of the game. In fact, the entire interface appeared to be hijacked from a console, as it isn'tPC friendly at all. It's the game that counts, though, and Madden2001--like its predecessors--serves up some of the best footballaction to be had on a PC. New online leagues and other multiplayeroptions added this year sweeten the deal. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

However, before you go off and by this, Madden 2004 is VERY VERY soon, and it looks much better than any of the Madden games, if you're looking for a good controller to get the most out of Madden 2004, I suggest the Gravis Eliminator Aftershock. The only place I've seen it really cheaply, is here at Amazon.com BUT, having said that, if your PC isn't up to speed to play 2004, 2001 one is a good choice game.

NCAA Football 2001 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Despite the tweaked graphics and artificial intelligence, NCAACollege Football 2001 from EA Sports is the same old college football gameon the PlayStation. The third incarnation in the series, this game straddles the fence between arealistic simulation and a fast-paced action game. College football fans willhave a blast as it allows them to play as any one of the 140 1-A or 1-AA collegeteams (with as many stadiums) on its way to reaching the coveted Orange Bowl,Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or one of 17 others. New this year is Advanced Player Control, or APC, giving players even morecontrol (and subtleties) to the action. This includes controlling any one player(you choose who you'd like to control before the ball is snapped), finding openfield and calling for the ball, and so forth. This gives the player more controlon the field, but doesn't take away from the fun factor. The game offers up a Practice, Exhibition, and Season modes, and the Dynastymode has been beefed up to allow gamers to review and recruit players at thejunior college and even high school level to enhance their rosters. TheSituation mode is a collection of scenarios for you to battle through, such ascoming back to win a game after a bad quarter or a lousy half. There's also anew mode, dubbed the Bowl Game Playoff mode, which is essentially a do-or-die,go-for-broke game for those who would rather work their way up the ladder, elimination style, toward the National Championship. Though these additions may sound like a lot has been added to the game thisyear, after a few hundred snaps and a dozen or so games, it really feels likepast NCAA games with a little more flair. If you enjoyed the previous versionsin the series, then no doubt you'll like this one too. It's college pigskin doneright, and there's nothing wrong with that! --Todd Mowatt Pros:

NFL Blitz 2000 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (24 August, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Take the already brutal sport of football, get rid of the refs, legalize certainperformance-enhancing drugs, and the result would look a lot like NFL Blitz2000. This home version of the eponymous coin-op arcade game tackles "no rules,no refs" football with such over-the-top playfulness that you can't help but smile whenanother player knocks yours off his feet with a late hit. NFL Blitz 2000 re-creates its coin-op cousin with deftness, including on-firemode, which boosts a team's performance when they're playing well, and audibleplay-calling at the line of scrimmage. Four players can compete at once in Blitz2000, but the action often is too confusing for this option, so two-player games arebetter. Passing control has been improved to include an icon-passing mode for moreexacting control. Outstanding sound effects of bone-crushing tackles and trash-talkingplayers, meshed with crisp, fast-moving graphics, translate into a thrilling gameplayexperience. In two-player mode this sports action game is unparalleled. --JeffYoung Pros:

NFL Blitz 2000, the successful sequel to NFL Blitz, contains all of the componens of each team in the AFC and NFC. Also added to the mix are incredible zany stadiums that consist of playing football on a rooftop in the middle of a city, to the classic style of an traditional stadium. Also included are humorous codes that can change the game into a war zone. Codes like No Interceptions, changing the football into the size of an giant balloon, and even super field goals, can change the face of football time and time again. It is just too bad that can't happen in the real game, it would finally make sports fun. While many people are now into the games for Nintendo's Gamecube, for those who still own the Nintendo 64, really need to own this sports game. It is just a first down to the ultimate gaming library. Only, if you still own the Nintendo 64 and didn't trade it in for a CD-ROM gaming system that takes longer to upload the game. NFL Blitz 2000 is that one kind of fantasy sports game, that continues to bring in the touchdowns easily. ... Read more Asin: B00000K2G9 |

NFL 2K Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (09 September, 1999) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $5.29 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Sega's new NFL 2K is the type of game that makes a very, very good first impression. For starters, this is without a doubt the best-looking sport video game ever produced on any platform--hands down. Not only are the players more detailed and lifelike than in any other game we've seen, but they move fluidly and with such an impressive array of animations that it's sometimes hard to forget you're playing a game and not just watching one on TV. You can even see the breath of each player during cold-weather games--we're talking graphical realism here, make no mistake. But NFL 2K goes way beyond skin-deep. This is an excellent football game, with gameplay that's easy to pick up at novice level but hard to master as you increase the level of difficulty. The game's controls are the most intuitive of any we've seen, and the playcalling interface is simply the best that anyone has ever come up with for a football title. And just when you think it can't get any better, you discover features like the full-league fantasy draft, a tutorial mode, extensive game and season statistics, and excellent play and player creation options. Put simply, this game makes every other football game on every other platform look dated. Even the play-by-play and color commentary are better and more fluid than any we've seen elsewhere. If you have even a passing interest in football and are planning to pick up a Sega Dreamcast console, you owe it to yourself to get this game as well. It is the new standard by which all future football--and sports--games will be judged.--Michael Ryan ... Read more Reviews (172)

Backyard Football Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Searching for a pigskin computer game for your football-fanatic child (especially ages 5 to 10)? If you'd rather not opt for the complicated simulation of the Madden series or the intense taunting and tackling of the NFL Blitz series, pick up Humongous Entertainment's Backyard Football. Combining the Junior Sports Network and the famous football players of the NFL Quarterback Club, Backyard Football features all 31 NFL teams and logos, custom NFL trading cards, and fast-paced five-on-five game play. Complex football play names are simplified for young players, and control couldn't be easier with Backyard Football's simple point-and-click interface, supporting keyboard, mouse, and game pad. One of Backyard Football's best features is its inclusion of big name NFL players, including John Elway, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice. Though the "backyard bunch" has been shrunk to pint-size form, young football fans should instantly recognize their favorite gridiron stars. A 14-game season satisfies those looking for solo play (the season ends with the Super Colossal Cereal Bowl), and a multiplayer option provides football excitement over the Junior Sports Network Internet site. While certainly not as deep or dazzling as top-of-the-line football computer games, Backyard Football's colorful graphics and intuitive game play should please all football-crazed youngsters. --Doug Radcliffe ... NFL Blitz Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (08 December, 1999) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Thirty yards is still 30 yards, no matter how small the viewing screen. Just like its big brotherson the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64, NFL Blitz 2000 for the Game Boy Color charges youthat same amount of ground for a first down. This NFL Blitz 2000 is the portable way to play the fiercest, most brutal football game around.Illegal hits and impossible moves are the order of the day as players brawl their way to the end zones in thisfun-filled fantasy football game. Many improvements have been made since the series first made its Game Boy debut. Football players arenow easier to see against the nearly neon green playing field. Team colors are realistically represented inthis update, too. Blitz features full NFL licensing, so all of your favorite big-time players are present. Quarterbacks canchoose from a library of 18 plays, while the defense can select from nine standard sets. Players can takepart in either the single-game arcade mode or the full season mode. Play against the CPU, or use a linkcable to go head-to-head with another person in a bone-crunching, no-holds-barred, no-move-is-illegalpigskin melee. --Bill Hutchens Pros:
