Space Invaders Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (12 October, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Space Invaders--just the name is enough to make yourthumb twitch. Few games evoke as many special memories as this retroarcade title. Remember vaporizing thousands of enemy ships whileignoring your mother's direct orders to go to bed? Who can sleep when you've got a dozen extra lives built up and you are about to bust yourall-time high score? Now you can experience this classic retro game onthe Game Boy or Game Boy Color. Like most arcade classics, SpaceInvaders's greatness lies in its simplicity. You move a ship at thebottom of the screen to the right and left, shooting at stacks of enemyships that also move to the right and left, bombarding both you and thethree shields you can duck behind. The ships slowly descend and if onereaches the level you're on, you lose a life. The more ships youdestroy, the faster the remaining ships move, making the last few shipsin any swarm very difficult to hit. As the levels progress, you'll facemassive boss ships and may even unlock the hidden original arcadeversion of the game. New elements were added to the elemental gameplay, including power-ups and levels that play out on slippery ice, but thebasic fun is still intact. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Samsung Yepp Hip-Hop 64MB Digital Audio Player (Blue) Average Customer Review: Electronics (01 December, 2000) list price: $249.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Samsung Yepp Hip Hop is easily one of the coolest-looking digital audio players around, and we found ourselves offering it up like an excited kid at show and tell. The player's small size and its groovy translucent blue color never failed to impress coworkers and friends, while its excellent sound also produced raves. The most outstanding feature of the Yepp Hip Hop is its size--only 3.2 by 2.4 by 0.97 inches and 1.7 ounces. It's the size a deck of cards (and just a bit lighter), and it fits neatly into a plastic pouch for wearing around the neck. We were a little dubious about how comfortable the neck cord would be, but a trip to the laundromat with the Hip Hop went off without a hitch. The player was barely noticeable, and so light it didn't get in the way of fluffing and folding. Yet the controls were easily reached and the great sound made the hours of drudgery fly by. Better yet, it never skipped a beat even when it was inadvertently slammed against a dryer a few times. Samsung has packed 64 MB of onboard memory into the Hip Hop, enough for 60 minutes of music without fiddling with cards or paying for more memory. But if you want more playback, the player's SmartMedia slot has room for flash memory cards for another 64 MB, enough for another hour of music and an impressive capacity for an MP3 player at this price. Sound quality was very good even with the included cheapo earphones--the dynamic range was crisp and had clean tones at both high and low ends. To download music to the Hip Hop, use the included USB cable to access the player's flash memory, format it, and transfer songs. You will need a USB port on your PC and Windows 98 or 2000 (Windows 95 and NT are not USB-compatible); it is also compatible with Mac OS 7.0 and above. Follow the directions in the manual for adding a USB driver to your system. The Yepp Hip Hop comes with RealJukebox software for ripping CDs, which took quite a bit of tinkering to get it to work right. (Make sure to check security and encoding settings.) The Hip Hop's manual didn't help much and unless you log on to the Internet, you won't have access to RealJukebox help. But once the software was all set up, it took us only about 30 seconds to encode a track into MP3 format, and then another minute or two to move it to the Hip Hop. Figure on 45 minutes to fill up the full 64 MB memory. Controls on the Hip Hop are basic. The buttons are the size of BBs, which were sometimes difficult to operate. The included remote control with backlit LCD adds a few more features, like reverse, hold, and four equalizer settings, but search functions are primitive. Ultimately, its software and hardware limitations might not make it the best MP3 player deal on the market. But with its cool design, sound quality, and portability, the Yepp Hip Hop more than holds its own as an entry-level MP3 player. --L.E. Klein Pros:

MY BEEF? HERE IT IS... I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE GOOFBALL WHO DESIGNED THE BATTER DOOR THAT KEEPS THE BATTERY IN PLACE. TOTALLY BAD CONCEPT AND DESIGN. FUNNY THING IS, THEY GIVE YOU AN EXTRA BATTER DOOR BUT THIS IS NOT WHERE THE PROBLEM OCCURS.
The player comes with: Here are the key points to know about this player: In conclusion, while this player does everything it needs to, it does absolutely nothing more. Also beware of some shoddy design and a battery cover that will require masking tape within a year. If you can live with that, and you can find this unit cheap enough to justify these hassles, go for it. Otherwise, look elsewhere because Samsung's customer service will only tell you sorry it didn't live up to your expectations.

Motorola T250 2-Way Radio (Sun Yellow) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $89.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Looking for a great way to stay in touch while hiking, climbing, skiing, camping or shopping? With an impressive two-mile range, the TalkAbout 250 is one powerful two-way radio, sporting 14 channels with 38 privacy codes to help block out unwanted messages. The striking design makes the radio's exterior as cool as its features. In our tests, we encountered no problems with interference or with finding free channels. The reception was clear, without too much static. We especially liked the scan lock, which scans through the channels until it finds an active channel. Scan-lock automatically locks in the channel, letting you listen-in discreetly or talk with other parties. Most of the buttons are intuitive enough to figure out, although we do suggest a quick read of the manual in order to fully appreciate the power of the TalkAbout 250. The placement of the talk button--inconveniently located in the center of the radio--makes it difficult to speak while holding down the button. You can solve this problem by attaching a microphone to the radio and using the VOX (voice activation) feature, which allows hands-free talking. The TalkAbout 250 is a great choice for anyone needing a powerful two-way radio to stay in touch while performing a variety of activities. Compact and feature-packed, the TalkAbout 250 is an inexpensive walkie-talkie with plenty of power. Pros:

Holidays on Ice : Stories by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 November, 1998) list price: $8.95 -- our price: $8.05 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis ... Read more Reviews (132)
The Santaland Diaries is one of the 6 essays in the book, and by far the best. This biographical tale of Sedaris' time as a Christmas elf in a department store is critical of himself, parents, the tiny children and Santa himself. Now made into a hit play that tours the nation, especially at Christmas, there's nothing like reading Sedaris' first hand account of slightly bored, slightly crazy out of work actors struggling to make a buck. Dinah, the Christmas Hore, is my other favorite holiday offering in this collection. This tells the story of Sedaris' sister, who brings an unexpected guest to the family's holiday celebrations. Suddenly, David sees everyone in his family in a whole new way--sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes it's not. In the end, David Sedaris comes through with another winning collection. Every book he writes is funny, but this one makes an especially nice gift. Besides HOLIDAYS ON ICE, another recent Amazon purchase I enjoyed was THE LOSERS' CLUB: Complete Restored Edition by Richard Perez, a truly lively, funny book.

Nerf Lightning Blitz Blaster Average Customer Review: Toy list price: $14.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review An interesting variation on the popular watery Super Soaker, this gun isalso powered by compressed air, but instead of water it shoots a flight of fiverubber-and-foam darts. Chunky and futuristic in shape, this silver andfluorescent orange 9-by-9-inch pistol-style shooter is pressurized by pumping theplunger in the hand grip. The darts are 2.5 inches-long, 0.5-inch-diameter tubes ofNerf foam tipped with a rubber sucker that sticks to smooth surfaces such asglass. (Rigorous Amazon.com product testing shows that pets are too furry.)All five darts are released at once; reloads require repressurizing. Fiveextra darts (not included) can be stored on the gun for quick reloading.--Richard Farr ... Read more Reviews (6)

Return - Pass the Pigs Average Customer Review: Toy US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review How's your tolerance for puns? You'll need some for Pass the Pigs, asimple game of chance built around a pig theme. Instead of dice, you rolltwo cute pink piglets, and you gain or lose points depending on how thecritters land. For example, if both land on all fours, called a "doubletrotter," you get 20 points; if they land lying opposite each other, calleda "Pig Out," you gain no points and cede your turn. There are a number ofother rules, as well as a variation called "Hog Call." This would be a good travel game--the pigs, instructions, and scoring padfit in a small, tidy box--or a fine present for someone who's, well, intopigs! --Elisa Murray ... Read more Reviews (1)

Mille Bornes Card Game Toy US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review You're cruising along at 100 mph, bolstered by an extra tank of gas, when suddenly your opponent cuts you off with a flat-tire card. You slam to a halt, sidelined until you draw a spare tire. It's a 1,000-mile race along an imaginary road; your goal is to arrive first, avoiding the hazards--flat tires, accidents, empty gas tanks--while inflicting them on your opponents and collecting the spares and repairs that will speed you on. The oddly absorbing Mille Bornes (French for 1,000 milestones and pronounced "meel born") has easy-to-follow rules of the road: green means go; red means stop; obey the speed limit at all times. You might even pick up a few words in French. Nostalgics beware: Anyone who owned an earlier version of the game will miss the acid-green plastic cardholder and the oversize cards. Mille Bornes is for two to six players. ... Read more Asin: B00000DMBG |
