Editorial Review

Finally, relief is here for hard-core Uno enthusiasts andanyone else who wants to play America's number one card game withouthaving to find human competition. The rules and game play are the same, but three AAA batteries are the only friends you will need to playMattel's blinking, beeping hand-held electronic Uno. An energetic, cleverly animated LCD display shows your hand and how many cards areheld by you and up to three virtual opponents. You pick, play, and drawcards using big buttons and a side-mounted card selector lever. Thegame tracks scoring (including high scores) and you can disable thesound effects. When you get to that last card, make sure you hold downthe Uno button until you hear the machine shout "Uno!" --PaulHughes ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun - but bad design
I thought the design of this game was horrible. You have to really figure out the colors of each card. And I could get the right size screw driver for the battery.I tried so many different ones that I ended up stripping the screw and had to break open the back to change the batteries.Oh, well... I've learned my lesson about buying these kind of games.

5-0 out of 5 stars piece of mind
I love the new uno handheld game. For once I was very happy to found a game that I could give tomy children and not have them screaming it's my turn. And I get a few hours of peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Buster
I brought my UNO game about Christmas time last year to keep me occupied while on a plane trip.I am a 43 year old woman. I have found the game to be addicting and a very good stress buster.I am usually playing as the last thing I do at night before I go to bed.I will probably wear it out and have to replace it soon.I play with mineeveryday.Great toy for adults, too. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Game Boy Color
I don't see all the hype in this portable gaming device. The games graphics are so terrible (So is Game Boy Advance). The only good Nintendo graphics is the brand new Nintendo DS which has Nintendo 64 graphics which isn't too shabby. But I really hate the Pocket and Color because it's a waste of money. Why would you get something in black and white with terrible graphics and then get one with only some colors (It's not that good) and plus the addition of bad graphics...now that's what I call a bad deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars great and fun
this isnt bad i have it and it works great i think this is better then alot of older systems like game boy or super nt but still its a good system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok..... but not as good as ngpc.
I got this system last year and it worked fine until a month ago. then the sound blew out. Also the graphics on many games suck. Still it's a hardysystem and I would recommend buying it if you like a classic look in color, but if you want something with good graphics, nice small comfortable size, and a motherload of great games, buy an NGCP(neogeo pocket color). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, not for low battery power
I have a Game Boy Color and bought this a few months ago. It's great when my batteries are new. But when batteries are almost out of energy, don't use this. I put it in the middle of a game. Batteries not so good. The power indicator light was alot dimmer. I take it out, it's back to normal. Other than a glare also, it's great since the Game Boy doesn't have a backlit screen like the Sega Game Gear. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best light out there
Don't be fooled by the cobra light and bone light, or other cheap lights. this is the one that should be bought. it stays in the gameboy like it's suppose to. It's also cheap, is bright, lightweight and small, so it's good for any game boy. It works on the game boy pocket, color, and advance, so there is no need to buy more lights. even better, there is a huge selection of colors for it. buy it the light has weak points, like that very annoying glare it gives off. it's also kind of stiff when you flex it. but it's a very good buy, it's also good if you want life for your gba, intead of buying an SP, you coukld one of these instead.(Forget about the SP's stupid clamshell design! If you don't care about scratching the screen)

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks good

Space Invaders

Game Cartridge (12 October, 1999)

Editorial Review

Space Invaders--just the name is enough to make yourthumb twitch. Few games evoke as many special memories as this retroarcade title. Remember vaporizing thousands of enemy ships whileignoring your mother's direct orders to go to bed? Who can sleep when you've got a dozen extra lives built up and you are about to bust yourall-time high score? Now you can experience this classic retro game onthe Game Boy or Game Boy Color.

Like most arcade classics, SpaceInvaders's greatness lies in its simplicity. You move a ship at thebottom of the screen to the right and left, shooting at stacks of enemyships that also move to the right and left, bombarding both you and thethree shields you can duck behind. The ships slowly descend and if onereaches the level you're on, you lose a life. The more ships youdestroy, the faster the remaining ships move, making the last few shipsin any swarm very difficult to hit. As the levels progress, you'll facemassive boss ships and may even unlock the hidden original arcadeversion of the game. New elements were added to the elemental gameplay, including power-ups and levels that play out on slippery ice, but thebasic fun is still intact. --T. Byrl Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars This ought to be better.....
I love the original, and this is a fun version updated with new graphics and new worlds and so forth.BUT -- there is no high score table, every time you lose you have to go back to the opening credits which takes FOREVER -- hopefully future iterations will improve on those basics that GBA aficionados have come to expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
I thought that this game was very good. You get some really cool special weapons and it isn't too easy. There are hundereds of levels, so it isn't a game where you just beat it in a day. This is a game I could reccomend too almost anyone. The graphics are pretty good though not the best that I've seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great update to the original.
If you're 25 or older, chances are you played the original Space Invaders in the arcade so many years ago.The Gameboy Color version provides the same classic gameplay with just enough of an update to make it feel fresh. Aliens still march along in the same unwavering formation, getting fasterand faster until you shoot the last one in the wave (punctuated this timeby boss battles every few levels), only now you have oodles of power-ups tohelp you in your fight - some of which are really pretty cool (thelightning bolt shot is my favorite - electrocute eight aliens at once!). There are many different types of aliens as well, with attacks that becomemore and more difficult to defend against as you get to the later levels. The graphics are impressive for the Gameboy Color; no, they're notpolygonal like the new PSX version of the game, but they are very detailedand colorful sprites that in many ways look more faithful to the original. In a lot of ways this game reminds me of the Taito-produced Super SpaceInvaders '91, minus the rotating formations (probably too CPU-intensive forthe little Gameboy). And that's no small compliment - I still consider SSI'91 one of the best shooters of all time.

If you never played or neverliked the original Space Invaders, the new version might feel a littlerepetitive. But if you are a fan of the original or of any of the clonesor updates that came later, you will go gonzo over Space Invaders for theGameboy Color. ... Read more

Samsung Yepp Hip-Hop 64MB Digital Audio Player (Blue)
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics (01 December, 2000)
list price: $249.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Samsung Yepp Hip Hop is easily one of the coolest-looking digital audio players around, and we found ourselves offering it up like an excited kid at show and tell. The player's small size and its groovy translucent blue color never failed to impress coworkers and friends, while its excellent sound also produced raves.

The most outstanding feature of the Yepp Hip Hop is its size--only 3.2 by 2.4 by 0.97 inches and 1.7 ounces. It's the size a deck of cards (and just a bit lighter), and it fits neatly into a plastic pouch for wearing around the neck. We were a little dubious about how comfortable the neck cord would be, but a trip to the laundromat with the Hip Hop went off without a hitch. The player was barely noticeable, and so light it didn't get in the way of fluffing and folding. Yet the controls were easily reached and the great sound made the hours of drudgery fly by. Better yet, it never skipped a beat even when it was inadvertently slammed against a dryer a few times.

Samsung has packed 64 MB of onboard memory into the Hip Hop, enough for 60 minutes of music without fiddling with cards or paying for more memory. But if you want more playback, the player's SmartMedia slot has room for flash memory cards for another 64 MB, enough for another hour of music and an impressive capacity for an MP3 player at this price. Sound quality was very good even with the included cheapo earphones--the dynamic range was crisp and had clean tones at both high and low ends.

To download music to the Hip Hop, use the included USB cable to access the player's flash memory, format it, and transfer songs. You will need a USB port on your PC and Windows 98 or 2000 (Windows 95 and NT are not USB-compatible); it is also compatible with Mac OS 7.0 and above. Follow the directions in the manual for adding a USB driver to your system.

The Yepp Hip Hop comes with RealJukebox software for ripping CDs, which took quite a bit of tinkering to get it to work right. (Make sure to check security and encoding settings.) The Hip Hop's manual didn't help much and unless you log on to the Internet, you won't have access to RealJukebox help. But once the software was all set up, it took us only about 30 seconds to encode a track into MP3 format, and then another minute or two to move it to the Hip Hop. Figure on 45 minutes to fill up the full 64 MB memory.

Controls on the Hip Hop are basic. The buttons are the size of BBs, which were sometimes difficult to operate. The included remote control with backlit LCD adds a few more features, like reverse, hold, and four equalizer settings, but search functions are primitive.

Ultimately, its software and hardware limitations might not make it the best MP3 player deal on the market. But with its cool design, sound quality, and portability, the Yepp Hip Hop more than holds its own as an entry-level MP3 player. --L.E. Klein

3-0 out of 5 stars BATTERY DOOR/COVER... BAD CONCEPT!
THIS MP3 PLAYER IS NOT REALLY THAT BAD. ALTHOUGH THE DOWNLOADS ARE PRETTY SLOW AND GRUELING.

MY BEEF? HERE IT IS... I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE GOOFBALL WHO DESIGNED THE BATTER DOOR THAT KEEPS THE BATTERY IN PLACE. TOTALLY BAD CONCEPT AND DESIGN. FUNNY THING IS, THEY GIVE YOU AN EXTRA BATTER DOOR BUT THIS IS NOT WHERE THE PROBLEM OCCURS.
THE SMALL "TOOTH" THAT THE BATTER DOOR CLOSED ONTO, BROKE OFF AND A NEW DOOR MEANS NOTHING WITHOUT THAT SMALL "TOOTH" TO CLING TO. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO... I FEEL LIKE I HAVE WASTED A LOT OF MONEY HERE!...

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor design and service overshadows decent features
This is a small, lightweight unit that has all the requisite features expected in an mp3 player. It does not, however have some of the niceties found in other players such as song title display, voice recording, rechargeable batteries, or song playlists. It also plays ONLY mp3 files, not any other formats.

The player comes with:
-Unit
-Wired remote
-Earbud headphones
-CD with Real Jukebox software for ripping/uploading songs
-Extra battery door
-Belt clip
-USB to mini USB cable

Here are the key points to know about this player:
-Functions: The unit itself has volume up/down buttons, stop (power off), play/pause (power on), ff/scan, rew/scan, and a handy hold switch to lock the player in either play/off to prevent accidental bumping of buttons. The headphone port also works as the remote control port (when using remote, headphones attach to remote itself), but can be used with just headphones. There are also 3 EQ settings, but these can only be accessed via the remote. There is no LCD display on the unit itself, only a green/red LED that indicates status.
-Sound quality: While I haven't listened to scores of players, the sound rates as good or better than the other players such as Rio's, Nomad's, and Sony's I've tried. Works with low (32kbps) and high (128 ) bitrate mp3's.
-Remote: The remote is a small cylinder (about size of roll of 35mm film) with a small LCD display that indicates song number (not name), time, volume, EQ, and battery status. The display is also backlit for a few seconds upon each button press. It has the same controls as the main unit, including another hold button(each are independent) and the EQ button. This is a handy feature for those who want the unit stashed away in a pocket and just the remote handy. It has a nice spring clip to attach it somewhere on your clothing or bag strap. The headphones attach to the remote itself, which explains why the included headphones have such a short cord (does not reach from my hip to my ears without remote!)
-Uploading software: Included is the RealJukebox software to burn mp3's (up to 128kbps), manage files, and upload mp3's to the player via USB cable. Personally, I like the Jukebox software, but it can be a pain unless you are meticulous about making sure the file info is accurate (genre, artist, title, etc). Another option is to go to the Samsung website and download the YEPP explorer which just lets you drag and drop. Also, the Yepp explorer is the only way to rearrange song order on your player. Jukebox will not let you do this. I use the Yepp explorer now. The upload times seem hideously long for a USB player. Not sure if this is inherent in the SmartCard flash memory architecture, but when compared to a compact flash card I use for my digital camera, it's like molasses. To upload 64MB of songs, takes about 8 minutes. Not much faster than a serial connection I used for an older Nomad player. If you like changing songs frequently, keep this in mind.
-Battery life: Decent, about 8-10 hours without the remote. About 6-8 with the remote, as it has a display and backlight.
-Poor design throughout: My main beef with this player is that there are some real shoddy design elements such as the battery latch and the belt clip. First off, the battery door design is so poor, they acknowledge it by including an extra battery door! Well, what happens if, as in my case, it's the latch on the unit itself that breaks? Here is the direct quote from Samsung customer support:
"Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Broken component are considered out of warranty conditions. I'm sorry our player did not perform to your expectations." That's it? I knew the latch was doomed, because it's so small and narrow and would fatigue over repeated battery replacements. So now I am sadly relegated to utilizing masking tape to keep the batteries in place because it's one of those designs where the battery door acts as the contact and counters the battery springs on the other end as opposed to a more sensible design that houses all contacts within the unit itself, with the door only acting as an access cover. This of course means every time I need to change batteries (since this has no rechargeable ones), I must break out the masking tape. ...! Then there's the belt clip, glorified strips of plastic that criss cross all over the unit, covering half the buttons. The last time I saw a clip like this, it was on my cousin's original Sony walkman from 1980! Functionally, it works, and you can still press the buttons through the plastic. I have run with it and worked out with it frequently, though the cheesy plastic holster makes me cringe in public. These poorly designed elements reflect the gap between Samsung's vision of quality with that of other brands like Sony. This unit was denied a proper QA review before heading to production, and just before shipping, someone said "hey how about a belt clip? oh and throw in an extra battery door".

In conclusion, while this player does everything it needs to, it does absolutely nothing more. Also beware of some shoddy design and a battery cover that will require masking tape within a year. If you can live with that, and you can find this unit cheap enough to justify these hassles, go for it. Otherwise, look elsewhere because Samsung's customer service will only tell you sorry it didn't live up to your expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectation
I bought the Yepp for my wife last Christmas, who has used it daily without issue.Due to it's light weight and small size, she comfortably wears it at the gym and while running on the track.Loading music has been simple and trouble free, and the sound is excellent.Battery life has been longer than anticipated - averaging about 20 hours of playtime between changes. ... Motorola T250 2-Way Radio (Sun Yellow)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $89.99

Editorial Review

Looking for a great way to stay in touch while hiking, climbing, skiing, camping or shopping? With an impressive two-mile range, the TalkAbout 250 is one powerful two-way radio, sporting 14 channels with 38 privacy codes to help block out unwanted messages. The striking design makes the radio's exterior as cool as its features.

In our tests, we encountered no problems with interference or with finding free channels. The reception was clear, without too much static. We especially liked the scan lock, which scans through the channels until it finds an active channel. Scan-lock automatically locks in the channel, letting you listen-in discreetly or talk with other parties.

Most of the buttons are intuitive enough to figure out, although we do suggest a quick read of the manual in order to fully appreciate the power of the TalkAbout 250. The placement of the talk button--inconveniently located in the center of the radio--makes it difficult to speak while holding down the button. You can solve this problem by attaching a microphone to the radio and using the VOX (voice activation) feature, which allows hands-free talking.

The TalkAbout 250 is a great choice for anyone needing a powerful two-way radio to stay in touch while performing a variety of activities. Compact and feature-packed, the TalkAbout 250 is an inexpensive walkie-talkie with plenty of power.

Pros:

  • Impressive two-mile range
  • Attractive design
  • Clear, static-free reception
  • Small enough for a pocket

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping up with your kids
A friend of mine has 13 year old twins and never knows where they have gotten off to. She mentioned to me she was thinking of getting some 2 way radios to try to keep track off them. So I bought her these for Christmas. She seems quiet pleased with them, the kids do not share her joy. These also work well inthe mall or when at a big outdoor event. They fulfill there pupose and are smallenough that they can go in a purse or knapsack with little bulk from them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Motorola TalkAbout 250 2-way radio
Great product for use in my industry of running cabling in homes. The sound is clear, and finding an available channel is not a problem.I have two problems with the units however, that prevent me from giving it five stars. The location of the talk button is obviously an issue, the other is the design of the volume control knob.It is larger that it needs to be, and located on the upper corner, and it is too easily snagged on things.I have had to replace or repair the volume control knobs frequently. It should possibly be located to the side, with only enough of the dial exposed to adjust the volume.

Great quality everywhere else however.Dropped and sat on, they keep on transmitting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable "tool"!
I purchased 2 of these radios, primarily for field communications while playing paintball. We used 3 Talkabout 250's, each with a Motorola earbud w/inline microphone and utilized the VOX capability. They worked great and it was an invaluable communications tool during the games.Communications were clear and the VOX worked well as long as the microphone was close to your mouth. The earbud fit very well within the ear and was comfortable. The only drawback with VOX was the delay with the microphone activation when first beginning to speak, but this is to be expected with a VOX setup. It didn't take us long to get in the habit of saying a word or two to activate the mike prior to transmitting what we really wanted to say. We have used these radios in the PTT mode as well and transmission is very clear and the range is good. This is a great way to stay in touch with your teammates, or family and friends in other situations and environments.Note: Amazon.com offered the Motorola 250 at a price significantly lower than I could find anywhere else, online or elsewhere. ... Editorial Review

Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Sedaris
David Sedaris could be one of the funniest writers of our generation. His semi-autobiographical essays make me laugh out loud. Sedaris views the world through cynical, yet witty eyes. His brutal commentary on society makes one blink and then chuckle.

The Santaland Diaries is one of the 6 essays in the book, and by far the best. This biographical tale of Sedaris' time as a Christmas elf in a department store is critical of himself, parents, the tiny children and Santa himself. Now made into a hit play that tours the nation, especially at Christmas, there's nothing like reading Sedaris' first hand account of slightly bored, slightly crazy out of work actors struggling to make a buck.

Dinah, the Christmas Hore, is my other favorite holiday offering in this collection. This tells the story of Sedaris' sister, who brings an unexpected guest to the family's holiday celebrations. Suddenly, David sees everyone in his family in a whole new way--sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes it's not.

In the end, David Sedaris comes through with another winning collection. Every book he writes is funny, but this one makes an especially nice gift. Besides HOLIDAYS ON ICE, another recent Amazon purchase I enjoyed was THE LOSERS' CLUB: Complete Restored Edition by Richard Perez, a truly lively, funny book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent
Some of the stories are absolutely hilarious while others are so-so.If you love Sedaris, you'll probably be a little disappointed as it's not as good as his other work. It'd be a good break from holiday stress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this and re-read it every holiday season!
Brilliant!Disturbing!Deliciously short and appropriate for holiday evening reading.Tuck this one in your travel bag when you go home for the holidays to use as an escape or distraction.I don't want to give too much away, but the piece on working as an elf at Santaland should be familiar to public radio listeners, and it is hilarious. The visciously biting review of an elementary school Christmas pageant, "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol" is another terrific read.

This is a book to own and open up every holiday season to read the stories over again.Pass it around the house. It's a very quick read.

An interesting variation on the popular watery Super Soaker, this gun isalso powered by compressed air, but instead of water it shoots a flight of fiverubber-and-foam darts. Chunky and futuristic in shape, this silver andfluorescent orange 9-by-9-inch pistol-style shooter is pressurized by pumping theplunger in the hand grip. The darts are 2.5 inches-long, 0.5-inch-diameter tubes ofNerf foam tipped with a rubber sucker that sticks to smooth surfaces such asglass. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, powerful--a blast!
I bought a couple of these for use at work, where my co-workers and I have a bit of a Nerf mafia going.Yes, it shoots all its darts at one time, but man is it accurate and powerful! It has clips to hold five additional shots on the body of the gun, and it really is easy to load.I don't have to pump mine more than about 5 or 6 times. It works great, and is definitely one of the sturdiest Nerf weapons I have collected.Recommended for anyone who just wants to have fun!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, a so- so gun
This gun is very powerful and pretty accurate. Those are the good things. The bad things are that it wastes ammo and slows you down.It wastes ammo because you shoot all five darts at the same time.It slows you down alittle because you have to pump it about 11 times. In my opinion, theSupermaxx 1500 is much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars great office fun
although smaller than some of the other nerf guns, the lightnin' blitz is a great toy.it doesn't take very long to pump up, and when it fires, all five mini darts go at once.you'll want to loadup on extra darts, though, because this only comes with 5.it's a little difficult to gorunning for the darts you just fired so that you can reload in the middleof a nerf battle.that said, the darts in this gun are interchangable withthe wild fire (which although it fires more darts takes a lot longer topump up & is much much noisier). ... Editorial Review

How's your tolerance for puns? You'll need some for Pass the Pigs, asimple game of chance built around a pig theme. Instead of dice, you rolltwo cute pink piglets, and you gain or lose points depending on how thecritters land. For example, if both land on all fours, called a "doubletrotter," you get 20 points; if they land lying opposite each other, calleda "Pig Out," you gain no points and cede your turn. There are a number ofother rules, as well as a variation called "Hog Call." This would be a good travel game--the pigs, instructions, and scoring padfit in a small, tidy box--or a fine present for someone who's, well, intopigs! --Elisa Murray ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun game of chance - an essential for college students.
Pass the Pigs is an easy-to-learn game of chance where you use small rubber pigs instead of dice. Any number of players from two on up take turns rolling the "dice" and accumulating points based on how the pigs land. A player can roll over and over again, gaining points, until he or she decides to stop and keep the points accumulated so far, or until the pigs show a "Pig Out" which ends the player's turn and sets his or her score for that turn to zero. The first player to get 100 points wins. There's a bit of strategy involved in weighing the odds of getting a Pig Out versus wanting to accumulate as many points as possible in any given turn.

Pass the Pigs is good for almost all age groups (it's not for small children due to the tiny size of the pigs), but I wouldn't exactly call it an educational toy. It's just a fun, simple game. My friends and I played Pass the Pigs a lot in college, and I still break it out to this day when my wife and I need a quick distraction from our day-to-day toils. ... Read more

Mille Bornes Card Game
Toy

Editorial Review

You're cruising along at 100 mph, bolstered by an extra tank of gas, when suddenly your opponent cuts you off with a flat-tire card. You slam to a halt, sidelined until you draw a spare tire. It's a 1,000-mile race along an imaginary road; your goal is to arrive first, avoiding the hazards--flat tires, accidents, empty gas tanks--while inflicting them on your opponents and collecting the spares and repairs that will speed you on. The oddly absorbing Mille Bornes (French for 1,000 milestones and pronounced "meel born") has easy-to-follow rules of the road: green means go; red means stop; obey the speed limit at all times. You might even pick up a few words in French. Nostalgics beware: Anyone who owned an earlier version of the game will miss the acid-green plastic cardholder and the oversize cards. Mille Bornes is for two to six players. ... Read more
