    Tony Hawk 2
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Video Game (14 June, 2001)
    list price: $39.99

    Editorial Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 doesn't look or play quite likeits other incarnations, but the amount of death-defying--or seriousinjury-defying--tricks you can pull off, and the wild level design, graphics, and responsive controls all work amazingly well for thehandheld.

With an overhead isometric view and its use of only four buttons, Hawkvets will need to readjust their attacks. Still, we were amazed by howmany tricks have been crammed into this cartridge. For the most part, the visuals are clear and detailed and the skaters are incredibly wellanimated.

Gameplay hasn't changed much. Initially, there are six levels available(more are unlocked as rewards). After picking a skater, you mustperform tricks and locate items to earn loot for buying new gear, whichwill enable you to improve your skater's stats and continue to the nextskate park. The game is sadly without some of the cooler features ofthe big consoles. For example, you cannot create parks or skaters, andmultiplay is sorely missed.

The feeling of accomplishment one gets when perfectly landing a stuntis just as satisfying on the GBA as it is on the PS One and Dreamcastversions. Even folks who don't like skateboarding games will thinkTony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a great (and addictive) achievementfor the handheld platform. --Mark Brooks

    Pros:

    • Incredibly fluid and detailed graphics
    • Responsive controls
    • Many, many tricks
    Cons:
    • Somewhat steep learning curve for all gamers, even Tony Hawk vets
    • Missing features of older versions, such as player and parkcreation
    • No multiplayer feature

5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Hawk 2
Though Tony Hawk's Pro Skater isn't new to the handheld market (it's been ported to the Game Boy Color in original and sequel forms), GBA developer Vicarious Visions has performed a stunning, overwhelmingly impressive job with a portable rendition of one of the best console games produced this decade. Though the game had to be scaled back for the system to handle, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on the Game Boy Advance is a true testament to the capabilities of the hardware, mirroring the outstanding gameplay of the original console design. Of all the titles that were produced for the Game Boy Advance's US launch, this game is the top of the heap...and it will most likely remain there for the rest of the year. Good? Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is great.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a fantastic game, and the Game Boy Advance version is no exception. It's one of those games where you can pop in, play a round for a few minutes before putting it away...which makes it perfect on the handheld. The Game Boy Advance version is also a technical marvel, providing the first true polygonal game on the system

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great game for all Skateboarders!
Tony Hawk hit the jackpot when he and Activision Software Company came out with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The sequel to the game was an even bigger hit, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.The second game was different in some ways. There are more objectives to accomplish in order to get to the next level. The game has new features like new skaters and Park Editor.I played the game and beat within a couple of days.Every time I play the game I figure out something new, like hidden areas, different tricks, and how to score more points. It helped me when I was skateboarding in real life.I learned new tricks through seeing how they perform them.I would recommend this game to anyone who is a skateboarder or is thinking about skateboarding. If your just looking for a cool game, this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Urban Combat on the go
This game is very fun for the military-minded person. The graphics are amazing, and give you a sense that youre in the ruined buildings in Urban cites in other countries. The missions are slow, and each moves has to be planned. You cant jump in because you'll hear a scream and watch your operative get hit by a sniper's bullet. The game all-in all has a very great story. I played this game on a...in total..20+ hour trip back and forth and it has entertained me 2000+ feet in the air :)

If you like guns, the military, or strategic combat, this is the game for you. No music obviously, a clancy game, but a fun game once you master it and get past the first level. The controls are AMAZING and its just amazing how quick the button combos are and how eaisly you can stage complex assaults. Try this: blow down a door with a shotgun with guy, throw a flashbang with another, and move in to clear the room all under seconds with a total of 5 buttons on a screen few inches large? Thats a work of art. ... Read more

    Advance Wars

    Editorial Review

You don't have to be MacArthur to recognize that Advance Wars isone of the best strategy war games for any console. The game pits four fictionalcity-states in a battle for territory. Your job as commanding officer is todefeat the enemies in turn-based combat over land, air, and sea. AdvanceWars has a stiff learning curve, but its interactive tutorials can turn thegreenest GI into agreat leader of pixelated men. AW also offers manymultiplayer options, including the ability to play against a friend by passingthe GBA back and forth. To extend the possibilities, you can also create newbattlefields and trade them with others. Despite cutesy visuals, this is a verydeep game that is also accessible. For GBA generals looking to flex theirtactical muscles or anyone looking for a simply great GBA game, look no further.--Mark Brooks

    Pros:

    • Clear and informative graphics
    • Ideal interface for the tiny GBA screen
    • Lots of multiplayer and customization options.
    Cons:
    • Misleadingly cute box art (this is not a game for tots!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best turn-based strategy I've ever played
You take on the role of a Commanding Officer (CO) in a cartoony world at perpetual war with itself. Easy to get into, and deceptively deep. Advance Wars is strategy at its best. What makes it so special? First, the graphics are great. The animations are instant gratification when a well-timed attack turns the tide of battle, help you visualize battle results in several ways so you know exactly how your units are doing. Second, the options for multiplayer are excellent. Because the game is turn based, 4 players can play together even on only one system. Grab a friend, and enjoy the anticipation of having the system handed back to you and seeing your opponent smirk as you stumble into their trap (playing on seperate systems can be done, but isn't nearly as fun).

The most important facet of this game is depth. Fog of War (where parts of the map your units can't see are blacked out) makes for intensity- you're always trying to calculate what forest or hilltop might contain enemy units waiting for you. The basics of troop movements give way to incredible strategy (delay the enemy tank by sacrifing your troops, or retreat and lure the tank into range of your artillery?). Each CO is completely unique (Max has stronger tanks, but weaker artillery. Sami has tougher troops, but weaker vehicles) and thier individual powers add an extra level of depth to the process.

Advance Wars is an amazing game for singleplayer action. Add in a full-featured map creator, a ton of unlockable COs, and the wealth of options, and this is one of the best multiplayer games on the GameBoy. A must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars War Chess
This game is basically chess, with more units, you can move all of your units per turn, and you can create units. It is challenging, but it is very fun.Not to mention its a gameboy game, so you can play it anywhere :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Review To The Other 190 Out Of 229!!!!
Like the REAL people out there said: awesome, thrilling, attractive, exiciting, strategic, "A two thumbs up!", "A never put down until your through!!!", "THE BEST!".

Bum, dum, dum, bum (drum beating for background music). "The best high firepower strategy game yet!!". ADVANCE WARS. Now being bought...SO BUY IT!!!!!

PS: And what boy would not think Sami is sexy?!?

    F-Zero : Maximum Velocity
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Video Game (14 June, 2001)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

If you like blazing-fast racing games (and have thumbs ofsteel), F-Zero: Maximum Velocity is one of the wildest rides yetfor a handheld system. Based on the famous Super NES game of yore, thefuturistic F-Zero asks you to pick from a starting lineup offour pilot hovercrafts that tear across flat but hazardous tracks. Yourgoal: compete for first place so you can advance to the next track anddifficulty level.

To have any success in F-Zero, great reflexes and a memory fortrack detail are absolute musts. While the controls are responsive, ingeneral the frictionless racing means that almost all cars have asuitably loose feel to them, and require skilled pilots to handlecorners. Be warned that gamers with adult-size thumbs may be in for avery painful experience due to the constant mashing of the GBA'sshoulder buttons. When you get bored of racing the computer, you cantake on up to four opponents via the link cable--and unlike multiplayerGame Boy games, only one cartridge is needed.

While F-Zero features many tracks and skill levels, beyond thesimplistic (yet challenging) racing, there isn't much depth.Fortunately, the silky smooth animation and detailed graphics shouldkeep fans of speedy arcade racers taxing their thumbs long afterthey've brought home the checkered flag. --Mark Brooks

    Pros:

    • Ridiculously fast-paced arcade racing done right
    • Many tracks and hovercraft to choose from as you gain skill
    • Graphics give a good hint of the GBA's pixel-pushing power
    • Four-player racing is a blast
    Cons:
    • Extremely painful to the thumbs of adult-size hands
    • Lack of depth may be a turnoff once novelty of speed wears off

5-0 out of 5 stars My first GBA game
This was my first GBA game and I was stunned by the amazing graphics this game featured. It has the best control set-up out of any GameBoy game I've ever played. The race cars are cool and the tracks are amazing. The have obstacles but not too much. The snow tracks can sometimes be tough when you end up slipping on the ice. The key to getting the best turns is to press the "A" button repetatively while turning instead of holding it down. FOr more hits about racing, press the SELECT button at the title screen to access the secret tutorial. I would recommend this game because it is the best racing game I've played on the GBA.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good launch game brought down by apoor soundtrack.
While I still play this more than most of my Game Boy Advance games it is a little disappointing.Yeah yeah yeah the speed is excellent and its pretty fun but thats about it.Its really not as good as any of the other F Zero games Ive played and I think its because of a poor soundtrack.I really liked the music in the past 2 F Zero games but the music here was just too bland and it was mostly drowned out by the sound of the vehicles engine.I know that a soundtrack isnt everything but to me it adds more fun to the gameplay.Hopefully the new F Zero game coming out in September will be better but if you play your Game Boy Advance a lot and like racing you should still buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars F Zero the good and the bad.
Well after about 3 years of waiting the sequel to F Zero X is finally here. Now that I think about it this game was like a tasty little appetizer to F Zero GX which is a game that came out last year.Where do I start?Oh the graphics.I happen to think that they are better than the ones in the SNES classic which came out in 91 but obviously not as good as the graphics in F Zero X or F Zero GX.Yeah I know F Zero X got a lot of complaints about it not being detailed enough but when you think about it the graphics were just really colorful and had some scenery that really stood out like the skull in Devils Forest, the statue in Big Hand or the space station in Big Blue.I still think the graphics in this game really look good for a portable system.Yeah they may not be gorgeous as the ones in Metroid Zero Mission but to me they still look great. And now for the controls. They are everything youd expect and want from an F Zero game.Really good and easy to use.The game really gets easier when you find out that you cant just hold the A button down at all times you have to repeatedly tap it.And it also easier when you get used to the fast paced speed and sort of memorize the tracks which is easy for me cause I have like a photographic memory. And for the hovercraft. You dont get to unlock as many vehicles as you did in F Zero X or F Zero GX but that doesnt matter. It admittedly loses a little replay value after you unlock all the cars but if replay value just means that it keeps you coming back for more then this game has great replay value.Yep this is one of the best if not the best racing game for the GBA because its one you will definitely want to play again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GBA First-Person Shooting at it's finest!
Ecks Vs. Sever is the fifth best FPS for the GBA, and the 3rd released for the system.Ecks Vs. Sever was the first FPS I played for the GBA and was awed by how good the graphics and gameplay were.I had to keep reminding myself that I was, in fact, playing a Game Boy!Now 3 years later we have exactly a dozen FPSs available for the GBA and Ecks Vs. Sever still remains in my top 5!I enjoyed Ecks Vs. Sever more than it's sequel, Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever, because, all around, it's a better game.We have a great story, realistic weapons, real-word environments, and beautifully rendered enemy spirits. The game is awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I bought this game because I wanted a new experience from boring old "E" games. This game did the trick. It is awesome. Weapons are cool, graphics are great, the storyline is better than could have been hoped. I won't give it away, but I will say that the game pits the two main characters against each other, but they don't know they are members of a much larger plot. I love this game. I would advise it to just about anyone, especially FPS enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ecks vs. Sever.......
Back when the Gameboy Advance first appeared, First-Person Shooters were released by the handfuls. Unfortunately, they've become something of a rarity these days. I think, in part, due to the fact that alot of them had experiences that were too similar and gamers grew tired of them. With the exception of Ice Nine and Serious Sam Advance later this year, we're probably going to continue to see a lack of them. Which is why I'd like to recommend Ecks vs. Sever. One of the more exceptional games that was released earlier on in the GBA's lifespan. The game centers itself around an FBI agent and a rogue NSA agent who are pitted against one another. Each must terminate the other in order to survive. Lil' do they know, though, that they are pawns in a much larger conspiracy. With 24 intense single-player missions, the gameplay changes depending on whom you choose to play as....making Ecks vs. Sever, virtually, two games in one. You can even link up with friends and play Assasination, Deathmatch and Bomb Kit...all the while playing with heavy-duty firepower such as the Grenade Launcher, Sniper Rifle, 'Jackhammer', or the M16a Rifle. The thing that impresses me the most about this game is how the AI reacts when you shoot at themand, if you shoot them, how they fall like a real person would if they were shot. I'll admit, it's the closest thing I've seen to 3-D without the game actually being 3-D.Sure, the graphics may not be all that great but who really cares when you're having fun?I wouldn't go so far as to call Ecks vs. Sever the closest thing to Goldeneye the GBA will ever see but I will say if you like games with that flavor or you like games with a conspiracy twist, Ecks vs. Sever will fit the order quite nicely. Too, for all you FPS vets, it offers a pretty decent challenge. Ecks vs. Sever is one exceptional FPS I highly recommend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tetris, Bad backgrounds
I just bought this Tetris game.I grew up with the black and white computer game "Nyet", before it was even called Tetris, so I love the Tetris game. The Tetris game itself was fine.

However, the backgrounds were horrible - mostly dark, with animated animals and an annoying flying cube with eyes getting in the way.The distractions might be good for building my concentration, but the backgrounds were so darkly colourful that I had trouble seeing the blocks properly. So they were a) cheesy, b) distorted the outline of the tetris blocks, and c) walked/swam/flew around a lot, so that it made the tetris blocks even harder to see.

I bought this game despite the mostly negative reviews because there wasn't another tetris gameboy advance game at the stores around my place. So it's enough to satisfy my Tetris fix, but I really wish it were better. That is, simpler, like white blocks on a black background, so I could concentrate on the game more than the bad graphics

3-0 out of 5 stars Great game, new ideas...
This newest breed of Tetris starts out like any other. You have the option to play the classic Tetris game that everyone, including Homer Simpson, has played. But, there are also 5 new play modes, included Fusion which is the most unlike classic Tetris. Each of the games offers hours of reply.

This game also includes an outline option to help you see where your piece will land, for newer or less skilled players. As well as being able to see the next four pieces ahead.

Additionally you can swap out one piece by pressing the L or R button, and trade that piece with any piece later in the game... this option is very helpful for storing straight pieces.

Unfortunatly each game only has 15 levels, unlike the nearly limitless play of the origional title.

Another flaw on my system is that most of the backgrounds are so dark you have to be in a very well lit area to play, this is a typical flaw of all gameboy games without an SP, but the purple pieces are almost invisible without some serious overhead lighting.

All in all this game offers a new look at a great game, and offers at least a month of solid replayablity, plus it's great to pick up for a 5 minute distraction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This game is okay. The game portion of the display takes up only 1/3 of the screen. The other 2/3 are graphics on the left and right side.At first I thought this would be a problem, since the tiny screen of the GBA gives me headaches at times. But it plays fine, and no problems seeing things. The controls are fairly smooth, but take a little getting used to.The "Ghost" feature is helpful. It shows you where and how a piece will lie, as it is still falling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best GBA Games
ZOE: The Fist of Mars is easily one of the best Game Boy games ever made. The story is intriguing as are the characters. The graphics are very good during Battle Sequences and cut scenes. For any fan of anime series with giant robots, some romantic elements and plot twists, this is one game you have to buy. Even if you're not a big fan of anime, this game is still worth your money. Outside of the battle sequences, primarily in the map, the graphics aren't very good. The landscapes are not well made. Most of the scenarios are also simple, destroy all enemies maps. There is also a hands-on element called the IAS which allows you to go inside the cockpit of your vehicle to either dodge or hit an enemy vehicle. While this can become tedious and prolongs the fight, you can turn this off along with battle animations, which brings me to the next point in this game. The battle sequences are amazing and are some of the best elements in this game. The scene shows a highly detailed animation of your vehicle performing its attack. The game runs HEAVILY on story and plot, and players who don't like to read and want to get right down onto the battlefield should NOT buy this game. To enjoy it the most, you must have PATIENCE and read through all the scenes.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think this is a very enjoyable game
addmittedly, once you can aim well it is a little easy but it is still really, really fun.get it if you don't have anything else to get. : )

4-0 out of 5 stars For Anime/Mech fans.
This game is classified as strategy, yet the game takes no strategy to win. The game is VERY easy even for people who have never played strategy games before. The enemies are very easy to beat and the missions usually consist of "Eliminate the Enemy" objectives. In addition, the IAS system (which is basically a targeting minigame) basically lets you choose whether or not you want to be hit or hit the enemy. If you use the IAS all the way through the game you can beat the game without ever getting hit once. The only problem is that the IAS becomes tedious and annoying, so you'll turn it off midway, and the game will still be a piece of cake.

So why did this game win a place in my hcollection? Because it's absolutley beautiful. The battle animations are wonderful and very pleasing to the eye. The mech designs are very cool, and you grow to care for each one, like a collector's item. The battlefields are well detailed as well. The CG pics are far and few inbetween, but put the cherry on the sundae. And to top it with sprinkles, Konami added an amazing musical score to the game, making you feel each part of the game through the music. When a hyper-insane mad-scientist is burning down a city, the music depicts the atrocity and horror through the music, making you all the more eager to stop him.

But the main draw is the story. The game is played through a mission-by-mission basis, but seems more like episodes to an amine series. The game starts out with lots of mysteries and finishes off with 2 different endings, making the game even more replayable. The dialouge inbetween missions help you relate to and get to know the characters and you actually care for what happens to them next. Not many plot-twists, but the story remains constantand well contructed till the end. Very little cheesiness here. My favorite part of the dialouge are the character portraits that come up when a each charater is talking. Each character has 3-8 pics for different emotions, and they are beautifully drawn. The story itself is very well translated and flows smoothly.

So click "Add to cart", and get yourself some headfones too, because this is a theatrical experience for any anime fan, but too easy for a strategy buff. ... Read more
