Editorial Review

When the theatrical release of James Cameron's Titanic was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200 million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Studios as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Some studio executives were confident, others horrified, but the clarity of hindsight turned Cameron into an Oscar-winning genius, a shrewd businessman, and one of the most successful directors in the history of motion pictures. Titanic would surpass the $1 billion mark in global box-office receipts (largely due to multiple viewings, the majority by teenage girls), win 11 Academy Awards including best picture and director, produce the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. A bona fide pop-cultural phenomenon, the film has all the ingredients of a blockbuster (romance, passion, luxury, grand scale, a snidely villain, and an epic, life-threatening crisis), but Cameron's alchemy of these ingredients proved more popular than anyone could have predicted. His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic fate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the Titanic disaster. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief but never-forgotten love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn Titanic into an emotional experience. Present-day framing scenes (featuring Gloria Stuart as the 101-year-old Rose) add additional resonance to the story, and although some viewers proved vehemently immune to Cameron's manipulations, few can deny the production's impressive achievements. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the sunset silhouette of Titanic during its first evening at sea, or the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels. In terms of sets and costumes alone, the film is never less than astounding. More than anything else, however, the film's overwhelming popularity speaks for itself. Titanic is an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact.Titanic is an epic love story on par with Gone with the Wind, and like that earlier box-office phenomenon, it's a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "Written By" does not mean great script.
The movie industry really took a nose dive with this movie. It went over-time, way over-budget, spending so much money that Fox had to ask Paramount to help fiance the rest of production. And in the end, was this big movie that people either enjoyed a lot or hated with every breath they took. This movie is both insulting to watch and is so mis-cast that it has come to represent Hollywood as this new "dream factory" that turns out movies that have so little substance to them, that it makes you want to never go to a movie theater again. What I don't care for is that this movie had no script.Cameron useually writes and directs his own movies, and he is a very weak writer. His characters come off as something between cartoons with no life or cardboard characters made out of wood.Which was the case here.If this movie was such a success to his career, how come he has not done any more major projects since then?

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!
I absolutely love this movie. I got this collector's edition, and its great! You know the movie, so I will just write about the benefits of this peticular edition. It comes eith a 24 page book of great scenes from the movie, along with qoutes and a very interesting opening by James Cameron. Along with this is a film strip (each box comes with one of seventen). The film strip is framed in a pretty matte frame. Along with this is the wiidescreen edition (VERY nice) of Titanic in Two video cassetes. The whole package comes in a pretty box with an inside picture of some scenes. If you already own the Titanic movie, it is probably not worth getting for the book/strip, but if you don't, this is a very nice package to get.

3-0 out of 5 stars SKEPTICAL
I fought against seeing this film for so long. I refused to see it in the cinema and refused to watch it on video. I was so tired of the hype of hearing about it and about how wonderful and sad it was. As if the tragedy of the real Titanic weren't enough! I am not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan by any means. The stories of cost overruns on the set and the thought of Billy Zane running through a ship that is sinking anyhow shooting a gun to kill DiCaprio is just inane (not to add, insane). One day, though, I don't know how, I got sucked into watching this film. It was too long. The dialogue was completely stilted and forced. And of course there were ridiculous parts, like Billy Zane chasing people with a gun on a ship that was already doomed. The love story I could have done without. The story of the Titanic and its doomed maiden voyage... classic, well told and duly dramatic enough to convey the sheer magnitude of this tragedy. The set and costumes were lovely. Kate Winslet was the star of this film in every way (she usually is in all her films anyhow). I cannot join the legions of people who heap meaningless praise on to the film, but I have to say that it was well crafted and happily all the hype is over. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very intresting!!!!
I first got this game when the traveling Titanic museum came to Chicago and they were selling it.It's been a while, but it never ceases to amaze and entertain me.
Yeah, it freezes sometimes but if you save it often, you'll be okay.

As a Titanic buff I can tell you that the detail- down to the tiles on the floor and china- are accurate.

The game has many twists and turns and you have many different options, which makes the playing never get old or boring.
The theme music is kinda freaky though- esp. when the Titanic is sinking beneath your feet and you can't jump anywhere, you're running about like a chicken with his head cut off! That is why I always turn the theme music off.The game always makes me rather nervous- the people you meet *cough, Vlad, Zeitel*can be a bit weird and intimadating, esp. when their trying to kill you.The game is almost erie (sp?)It's very fun though and I would reccomend it to anyone with a slight intrest in Titanic or history.
I promise you- by the time you are done playing this game for the first time, you will have a much better understanding and a different kind of sympathy for the people there on that fateful night.
Also, to get in the "Titanic" mood, rent the two Titanic movies!!!Very fun!

The best advice I could give you is to save before any kind of meeting with Vlad and/or Zeitel. PLEASE, JUST DO IT!!! Believe me.I learned the hard way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent software
I have Titanic Adventure Out Of Time, and it's so much fun!!It's so realistic too.The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it always freezes on me if I go too fast.I have to make my character go around the ship really slowly, and save my game every 3 minutes, which is really annoying.Other than that, it's a fantastic game! =)

4-0 out of 5 stars Go back to 1912 and find out what it was like on the Titanic
I would like for readers to know that this is an review for Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. This means that I am not rating/reviewing any other item that may be included in this product. Thanks

Cyberflix has outdone themselves. Titanic is a masterpiece. I am a Titanic buff and eveny I found it to be a marvel. Titanic has rerisen. The wonderful graphics almost deserve to be on Playstation2. The charcters I found to be really realistic. Like in other adventure games like Oregon Trail 2 they just move their mouthes. But every thing else is still. In Titanic, everything moves. When they move their hand the clothing has ripples and their skin moves just like a human. You also get to say what you want not just what the computer player has to say. BUY THIS! The only error I had was it froze and I couldn't find a patch for it that worked. That is the only reason for it to have 4 stars.

Rating Titanic: Adventure Out of Time

Graphics 10/10
Realistic Enviorment* 10/10
Realistic Characters 10/10
Easy Controls 10/10
Suspense & Other Action 10/10
Errors & Other Problems~ 4/10

*REALISTIC ENVIORMENT IS HOW REALISTIC THE ENVIORMENT AROUND YOU IS. EXAMPLE: The door frames or details on the lifts etc.

~ERRORS & OTHER PROBLEMS ARE BASED ON HOW MANY ERRORS I OCCURRED. EXAMPLE: Freezing during gameplay. This is a great annoyence when playing an adventure game. This counts as a lot of points!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is good for people that are first starting out with an interest in the RMS Titanic due to the fact its filled with over 800 questions and answers that covers the building, sailing, rescue, aftermath and after the section talking about the finding of the titanic it goes to the movie facts for a few of the titanic movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Heartfelt Intriguing Answers
This is by far the best book I have ever come across about the night of April 15, 1912 when the Titanic sank.
This book is filled with 882 ½ facts (because the ship was 882 ½ ft. long) about the people, the ship, crew, heartwarming stories of how mothers pleaded for their sons to be allowed into life boats, how lovers said goodbye to each other, how people were refused into life boats, and how others never made it out of the ship.
There are detailed names, dates, info about the aftermath, a "whatever happened to..." page with facts about survivors, as well as great info about the discovery of the ship, exploration of the wreckage, facts about the movie directed by James Cameron, and a great glossary at the back of the book to learn about different words associated with the ship.

What I love most about this book is the heartfelt facts about the people who were on the ship, and what happened to them. If you have ever wanted to learn about The Titanic, this is THE book to buy. An Outstanding tribute to the souls loved and lost. Deserves 10 Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous!
Brilliant reference book. If you ever had wondering questions about the Titanic, this is your book. Summary: This book has answers to almost all of your questions about the ship and the sinking, etc. Wonderful facts. Reaction: Though this book is thin, it has plenty of little bits that can keep you interested 100 years later. Every Titanic fanatic will find a new fact on the ship and the people involved with it. Wonderful. A MUST BUY!!! ... Read more

The 1997 Academy Award winner for Best Dramatic Score, James Horner's Titanic was the first soundtrack to reach the No. 1 slot on the Billboard charts in two decades; it also seemed to rival the Big Mac in sales for the year. And what can we say about Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"; would "ubiquitous" suffice?

Horner's combination of synths, chorale, and orchestra perfectly underscores the action in director James Cameron's 20th-century melodrama. It's a finely honed piece of Hollywood craftsmanship from a composer who has tackled more musically adventuresome projects in his career. FYI: Horner's follow-up to Titanic was the score for a different disaster: Deep Impact. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Understand How People Can Hate This Soundtrack
I really don't understand why people hate this soundtrack. The music is so powerful and strong... This is clearly James Horner's greatest album.

4/5- "Never an Absolution": I'm not really sure where this played into the movie, but the vocals really give boost to the instruments.

4/5- "Distand Memories": This isn't my favorite, but I love the beginning sounds. They're very calming...

5/5- "Southampton": This is one of my favorites. Plain and simple.

5/5- "Rose": One of the best songs on the soundtrack. The vocals and instruments mix wonderfully. Not only is it played in one of the best scenes of the movie [the flying scene], but it is very well written.

5/5- "Leaving Port": Again, one of my favorites. What else is there to say?

3/5- "Take Her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch": I usually don't really pay attention to this song, since it sounds similar to "Leaving Port", but nonetheless, it is still moving.

4/5- "Hard to Starboard": This song leads into the sinking part of the movie, and it is where the soundtrack starts to turn darker. It fits very well with the scene, although it is a little long...

5/5- "Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave": This is my favorite track. The vocals are so haunting, and they really make tears come to your eyes. It is very moving and powerful, and it fits well in the different scenes it is played in, very smooth.

4/5- "The Sinking": This is a track that is really dark. It shows true emotion, and that is one of the reasons why it fits so well...

3/5- "Death of Titanic": The title just makes me sad. The instruments are loud and clear, full of emotion, but the song drags on.

4/5- "A Promise Kept": This song sounds dark, too. Darker than the others. Guess it symbolizes Jack's death...

5/5- "A Life So Changed": This is one of my favorites. The vocals are haunting, and it can brings tears to your eyes as well. Just watch the scene that it is played in during the movie, and you'll see what I mean...

3/5- "An Ocean of Memories": This is another track that I skim through. I still enjoy it though, and it is very calming and softer.

5/5- "My Heart Will Go On" performed by Celine Dion: What can I say... Amazing voice, Celine. She is so powerful getting her message across, and it fits perfectly with Jack and Rose.

5/5- "Hymn to the Sea": My second favorite to "Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave". This song finishes the album off sadly, hauntingly, but at the same time, nice. A perfect way to conclude a perfect soundtrack.

I'd advise you to purchase this CD. Take it from me, you won't regret it. James Horner did a splendid job. He probably worked his butt off, and the result of it is amazing. In all, I give this CD five stars, because it really deserves it. If you don't believe me, read some of the other reviews that gave this CD high stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars best Soundtrack ever

I really love this soundtrack.
It has beautiful music. I listen to it going to sleep at night
it is one of the best. please buy this soundtrack it so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the mostpowerful and magical music composed period
Many people hate this score with a passion. So, who cares if the song was played to death on the radio. That's just not enough, at least for me to hate it. I still treasure this soundtrack after many years of it's release and will for many years to come. Sissel possess one of the most beautiful voices in the world. She does a fantastic job. The themes are exquisitely beautiful. It touches deep within in the heart. I can't stress that enough. They capture emotions perfectly and I couldn't of imagined anyone else composing the music. The synths are there for a reason and they're perfect for the movie. James horner didn't want a church choir sound in the movie, and I must say I like and prefer the synths. Since the purpose of the music is to be haunting and timless, without sounding like a period piece as said by Mr. Horner and Cameron, a full orchestra would've seemed contradicting to the purpose and out of place; it would've sounded like a sweeping conventional score. The whole purpose of the music is to sound unconventional for time in which the film is set so that it can bridge the gap of time and make emotions immediate. Like many have stated, the result is just unequivocally lush and excellent. This is an emotional masterpiece that everyone should own. Period. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The tragedy of the Titanic has fascinated all since she sank with 1,500 of her passengers and crew in 1912. Much later, scientist Robert Ballard set out to find and explore the wreck, despite difficulties of depth and location. Using the research submarine Alvin and a remote-controlled underwater robot, he was the first human in over 70 years to see the giant resting beneath the North Atlantic waves. Secrets of the Titanic tells the story of the events leading up to the sinking using footage and photographs from the doomed maiden voyage and then follows the luckier Dr. Ballard through the steps leading to his discovery. As usual for National Geographic, the photography is excellent, even within the cramped confines of the tiny Alvin. The first views of the Titanic's interior are truly spectacular, especially when contrasted with vintage photos, and the excitement of Ballard and his crew is contagious. The spirit and joys of discovery are well captured and the viewer is reminded that the world is still teeming with opportunities for adventure. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How could I not give it five stars?
Ok, to start with, I LOVE the Titanic! It is onen of my fav. times in history, I mean think about how it would be to be on that ship and everything anyways, I need to get to the point: This is the best ed. movie about it that I have seen! It has close up footage and its like your walking on the ship when it first sailed off in 1912. Its like you are the one exploring it and in person and not just looking at a tv. I would suggest that anyone and everyone see this movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this!
My kids, 5 and 8, both love this video. My youngest is fascinated with anything Titanic, and the high-tech equipment in this video, along with historical background, make this film a good watch.Good, educational material, not too long, and suitable for most kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did you expect less from National Geographic?
Before I start this review, I would like to say that today marks the ninetieth anniversary of the Titanic disaster (But, since it sank in the morning of April 15th, the real anniversary of the sinking is tomorrow. However, the ship hit the berg at 11:40 PM and many people would rather say one date than April 14-15).

This story is the ultimate tragedy and could have been avoided. Since the sinking, historians have been asking various what ifs: What if the ship had enough lifeboats? What if Captain Smith and the wireless operators had obeyed iceberg warnings? What if the ship had not tried to steer away from the ice (Ramming the berg head on would have only folded one or two compartments)? And what if other ships had gotten there in time to rescue passengers (The Californian was only about ten or twenty miles away)? The sinking of the Titanic also brought an end to what Mark Twain called "The Gilded Age". Before the Titanic's voyage, the focus was on larger, faster and higher. Man believed that it could do anything, including conquering the sea with an unsinkable ship. This disaster, however, was a reality check. People were never again as confident in technology and began focusing more on safety than speed, size and luxury.

This video documentary was made in 1986, a year after Dr. Robert Ballard and his Woods Hole Institute found the ship, and follows their subsequent expedition of the wreck. The footage is not as spectacular as say the IMAX-quality footage found in "Titanica" or on some Discovery and History Channel specials, but this was back when the wreck was first being explored. The major goal was to examine and map out the site. Then, after the footage and results were examined, they would come back to get some pretty pictures. This also shows how far we have advanced in the field of underwater research. And that shot of the ship's bow coming out of the darkness still gets me every time.

Ballard hopes at the end of the video that the world would treat the site with respect. Sadly, the events that have occurred since the discovery of this wreck have been far different. Instead of respecting the wreck and increasing our knowledge of the tragedy and of the people aboard, savalgers have scavenged it. Thousands of items have been raised and placed on exhibit at museums. The people who do this claim that it is to protect these items from decaying, but this is unnecessary. It is very much like going to a graveyard, prying open the coffins and stealing the clothing and other possessions of the dead. We already know about the time period and about life back then. Raising artifacts won't help archeologically and they won't add to the context. If anything, every artifact recovered takes away from the context.

I am also glad that many more people are now aware of the Titanic's story and the tragedy. But when did many learn this? After seeing the 1997 movie, of course. While I admit that James Cameron's film is very accurate to the history and events of that night (At least according to historians) and is very entertaining at the same time, whenever someone watches a special like this documentary now, they relate it to the movie. They say things such as "Oh that's where Jack and Rose were when they met" or "That's where this person got killed" or where "That person met that person". I also dislike those people who claim to know everything about the Titanic because they saw the movie five times. I saw this documentary many times long before I saw the feature length film. And I will tell you that nothing beats the factual history. In here, you get the straight facts, not mixed in with a romance.

My opinions, however, should stick to the documentary. This documentary, though its hopes for the wreck site have been somewhat dated by time, is still incredible and is one of National Geographic's top specials on shipwrecks and oceanography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Very good.Couldn't put this book down once I got into it.The artwork was very interesting.Between the authors narrative, the survivor accounts, and the illustrations, I really got into this book, which is about the last night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were some real treats in it like the analysis of Captain Smith, who was portrayed by piecing together a whole bunch of survivor statements, which ended up showing a captain who remained involved and on the ball after the collision.I also liked the treatment of a potential third boat (besides the Californian)in the area during and after the Titanic's sinking. This is the first book I read that also showed the captain leaving the bridge only minutes before the impact (instead of the more common portrayal of a little after 9 p.m.)Very interesting.

There are a lot of Titanic books out there, and this is one of several of them that is both informative and entertaining (there are some enjoyable new illustrations in this book as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Paul Quinn really does his homework - and follows through with the hard but necessary research that is not evident in so many other Titanic books. He goes through all the court transcripts with a fine-tooth comb, apparently with no particular ax to grind, and simply lets the facts lead where they may. For example, we learn that First Officer Murdoch, who was evidently involved in the final panic and shooting near the bridge, was also much more involved in both port and starboard boat launchings than has been suggested in earlier works. Up to the moment of the rush(s) on the last boat(s), Murdoch was the one officer who kept his head and launched the boats properly. Quinn is also a good painter, and is the first artist to actually portray what survivors saw (and could not see) under real lighting conditions. ... Read more

It is impossible to read this book, which is as sumptuously appointed as the great ship itself, and not want to plan a Titanic dinner party immediately. Fortunately, the book provides--besides beautiful photos, delectable factoids, and fascinating quotes from the rich and vanished famous--clear, easy-to-follow instructions on how to plan such a party. You can use recipes for first-, second-, or third-class meals.

Remember, style is all. Try to equal the class evinced by Titanic survivor Renee Harris, who sued the steamship line for her husband's death in the sinking, put the $50,000 settlement into the first play by Moss Hart (who gives her credit in his popular autobiography, Act One), and lost all her cash in the 1929 crash. When Walter Lord, the dean of Titanic lore who wrote the introduction to this book, interviews the aged, broke Ms. Harris in her welfare hotel, he writes, "She had lost neither her sunny disposition nor her theatrical poise. One day I brought her a little jar of caviar in an attempt to give this gallant lady a taste of the good old days. She sampled it once, then pushed the jar politely aside. 'You call that caviar?' she asked." As Lord observes, "Reproducing the Titanic's marvelous food is surely one of the best ways to experience a bygone age of luxury and leisure."

Don't forget to set the mood with music: either Titanic: Music as Heard on the Fateful Voyage or Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture will do, depending on whether you're a classicist or a romantic. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

Congratulations! You're on your way to purchasing one of the best cookbooks around, a truly gourmet mix of history and culinary art second to none.

First and foremost, "Last Dinner on the Titanic" is a cookbook, and an amazing one at that. The recipes recreated here are indeed taken straight from that fateful Atlantic crossing in April 1912.The recipies are (for the most part) thoughtfully and interestingly grouped by menu from the area of the ship in which they were served, e.g., the First Class Dining Room, the Parisian Cafe, the Third Class Dining Room, etc. Thus, you get a broad spectrum of foods of the time, or at least the Chef d' Cusine's interpretation of foods of the time. And what a spectrum it is.You can pick and choose from Tripe Stew to Filet Mignon Lili to Lobster Thermidor with Duchesse Potatoes to "American Ice Cream".Or, if you're up to it, try and take on the entire First Class Menu from the night the Titanic went down, with all 11 courses in all of their glory.

I have now made several of the recipes from the book and they are (a) not too terribly difficult; and (b) extremely good.Don't get me wrong -- I'm sure making all of this on a ship in 1912 was extremely challenging; but for those of us at home in 2004, the modern conveniences (food processors especially) make these recipes a little easier to tackle. That's the great think about this book -- you can actually use it, although you will also be fascinated by the historical aspect as well. The Canapes L'Amiral and the Roast Sirloin Forestiere are partiuclarly good dishes.

Second, and almost as good as the food itself, the authors do a tremendous job of weaving history into this cookbook. When I got this book, I almost read it cover to cover just because it is so darn interesting. The history is not stuffy like an old text book; rather, it is extremely vivid and interspersed with photos, drawings, and anecdotes both from passengers who survived and those who did not.So you not only get the food of the period, you get the "feel" of the period as well. The authors even give you a tailor-made plan for throwing a real Titanic party if you want, right down to what to wear and how to fold the napkins!I could go on and on about the great stuff you'll learn, but I'll just say as a final selling point that every person who has seen this book in my house picks it up, sits down, and leafs through most of the entire thing.Yes, it's really that compelling and interesting, even 95 years later.

So grab it right now, and bon appetit and bon voyage!

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious look into the culinary side of Titanic!
We got this book from the library when Titanic items were the rage and easy to get to. I've always been interested in the ship. This was a fascinating book. Trying to pronounce some of the elaborate first-class items on the menu was fun.

There are plenty of photographs and nice illustrations in this book. It's a joy to look at, and the third-class soup spoons were huge. Personally I thought the saltine and veggie soup diet of the third class looked the most appetising. : )
