    Editorial Review

Think you undid the undead in Dreamcast's gun-crazy frightfest? Think again. The zombies from House of the Dead 2 areback, and they want revenge for your gun-happy ways. In a change fromHouse of the Dead's first-person viewpoint, ZombieRevenge places all characters (including hordes of attackingzombified souls) in a third-person camera view.

A perfect translation of the arcade game by the same name, ZombieRevenge also offers up an original mode that features a few smalldifferences, including the option to play with powered-up guns or inbare knuckles mode (without the aid of handguns).

The graphics are crisp and clean, but the controls are mired in poorresponse time, and too many functions are assigned to the same buttons.Fans of the arcade version will rejoice at not having to pump quartersinto a machine, but average zombie-hunting folks might be better offwith Sega's other spooky shooter, House of the Dead 2. --JeffYoung

    Pros:

    • A seamless arcade-to-Dreamcast conversion
    • Interesting VMU minigames enable players to add strength to theircharacters
    • Impressive graphics

    Cons:

    • Ambiguous controls
    • No save-game feature
    • You can only carry one weapon at a time

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun but sometimes frustrating
I got this game last year but I did not have a Dreamcast. Now that I finally got one I got to say this game is pretty good. But it is very hard.I can usually beat a game within 2weeks but this one is different.I got to the last level and got killed 3 times.I was a little frustrated because all my credits were gone and I could not finish.I like the game play and it has pretty good graphics for DC.I will finish this game sometime when I have the energy to deal with the frustration.

3-0 out of 5 stars About like a Zombie Movie
I found this game in the arcade, I played it with all the money I had.Almost got to the last level, so i came back with my brother and brought enough money to guarentee our victory.

I was stoked when I found out that it was available on DC, I didn't have a dreamcast but I was impressed with a few of the other titles on DC, so I threw down a hundred bucks and got myself a brand new DC, with controller and Memory card.I got this game as well as a few others.

Ok, now to the point. This was a waste of money, the game is impossible to beat, you have 15 lives and no saves.Maybe I am just not any good, but why do they have all the VMU games but you can't actually SAVE your game... and so I got a partner to play, but no, now you just share the 15 lives between the both of you.

This is a fun game, nice weapons, animations, controls, and all that, but its just too repetive, their is virtually no replay value, the 2 player vs. is not even worth trying. The items and enemies are in the same place everytime and there is no randomization of gameplay. Not what you want from a mindless zombie fighting game.

The story makes almost no sense, something about mutants and a computer disk, a mysterious woman hiding in a garage, a gold eye, 3 face cards, a train speeding out of control, a laser, and 3 main characters who... well who knows...

    3-0 out of 5 stars THUMBS:MIDDLE
This game has blocky ... graphics. A stupid story. But the gameplay is (kinda) fun. The wepons were good(I like the drill and flame thrower). This game would not be on the top of my wish list/ ... Read more

Square-jawed, smack-talking, shotgun-toting Ash must once again battle evil forces, but this time you take control of the fate of the world! Evil Dead: Hail to the King picks up eight years after the cult-classic trilogy ends. Bruce Campbell, the star of the movie series, lends his vocal talents to the game. It continues the ongoing saga of Ash and the Necronomicon, or the Book of the Dead. Open the Necronomicon, and battle all the Kandarian demons, ruthless deadites, and unspeakable monsters that it can spew out. The game takes place in environments familiar to fans of the films, such as the cabin, the cellar, and the bridge. It contains all of the humor, suspense, action, and gore that made the movies such classics, then adds puzzle-solving aspects to the successful formula. Ash has the remarkable ability to use weapons in both hands simultaneously, so feel free to head down into that cellar and carve yourself a witch. Hail to the King, baby! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse Control Function EVER!!!
I love the films, I think the game set up is great, familular and fun. I think the graphics are okay by PS standards, but...

    The Control is AWFUL!!!

The came is set up like a keyboard game for PC, up, back and... spin??? Yes, left and right spin the Ash!!! You have to spin him, then press up for forward, spin, press up, spin, press up.

    Walking left...? SPIN, PRESS UP!!!

    Walking right...? SPIN, PRESS UP!!!

    Want to fight???

Too bad, your behind a tree, a wall, a rock and can't see your self to... are you ready??? Spin, then press up...

Did they play it before they released it? I can't believe they did.

Love the movies, hate the game.

Buy Fistful of Boomstick! Still too hard a game, but it plays correctly and that matters alot.

Now, if they would just make a real game they might learn there's a real market out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars The dead rises again...
This game is a spectacular instalment of the past 90's movies "Evil Dead" and "Army of Darkness". It uses great voice overs (For instance... Bruce Cambell). The angle shots and graphics could use a little bit more progress but the button handling and controlling is great for a PS1 game of it's marvelous movie credencials. I reccomend this game for (...) teens everywhere. ... Read more

    House Of The Dead 2
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM (09 September, 1999)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Direct from the arcades to the Dreamcast, Sega has a sure-fire smash on its hands with this near arcade-quality translation of popular zombie shooterHouse of the Dead 2. Most fast-action gaming fans will immediately dive into the basic premise of this game: shoot and destroy the zombies that have invaded the creepy haunt known as the Curien Mansion.

For what it's worth, however, House of the Dead 2 does contain a pretty intriguing plot that moves beyond the simplistic point-and-shoot genre. In addition to the fast-moving action, there are severalsubplots that shed light on the darker secrets lurking within this eerie, zombie-infested environment. Gameplay can be set to accommodate several skill levels, including easy, medium, and hard game settings.

Even if you manage to master this game, there are several alternative plot and game paths that will keep you coming back for more. Your shooting patterns and on-screen actions will determine the plot path and gaming areas that you can explore. Skilled shooters and well-trained zombie slayers will be rewarded with secret game areas and unusual plot twists.

By saving the lives of innocent bystanders, you will usually be able to take a shorter path to the end of the game level. In addition, you'll often gain health bonuses that enable you to play longer. If you complete the game without allowing any hostages to die, you'll even unlock a secret bonus room.

A few years ago, Sega disappointed some hardcore fans with its less-than-perfect home translation of the original House of the Dead game. With House of the Dead 2, Sega has fully redeemed itself. The Dreamcast is the only home game system with the processing power to do the arcade game justice--and it shows. We just about drooled over the graphics, which have to be seen to be believed.

The home version even expands beyond the arcade gameplay with exclusive new levels, including a training mode that helps you practice your shooting skills before you enter the game. There are also several never-before-seen secret game areas that were developed exclusively for the Dreamcast.

The only disappointment here is Sega's decision not to include the light gun accessory with this title. You can play with a basic Dreamcast controller, but the game was designed with the light gun in mind. Without a light blaster, it's just not as fun. It's a good thing that third-party companies, such as InterAct, are already offering light guns that are compatible with the Dreamcast. We highly recommend purchasing this separately sold light gun accessory; it makes the game infinitely more enjoyable and, frankly, some of the harder areas of the game are almost impossible to beat without it. --Brett Atwood

    Pros:

    • Near perfect arcade-to-home translation
    • Multiplayer support with a second Dreamcast controller or light gun (sold separately)
    • Exclusive levels developed only for the Dreamcast
    • Multiple game paths

    Cons:

    • Gameplay suffers without optional light gun accessory

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but fun
I only have this because I have Xbox's House of the Dead 3.The House of the Dead 3 is better.Better graphics, effects, blood, gore, and options.I'd reccomend that one more. But if you are more pleased with House of the dead 2 and only have an Xbox then get House of the Dead 3,beat it,and go to The House of the Dead 2.There,you start at The House of the Dead 3 and go back in time in a time machine until you reach the year 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good Classic Horror Shooter
This game is pure fun. It is a must own shooter for all
people who own a Dreamcast. I am dissapointed that Sega
has stopped its bussiness in the gamming industry.
Anyways, this shooter packs non-stop zombie blastin' action.
But get this first, if you buy this game, get a lightgun.
The dude with the lightgun is the king, the one without is
zombie chow. I also like the way you can blow off individual
    body parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must own for DreamCast Owners every were!
    HOFD2 Is Awesome.
It's very violent and gory which is why I love it.
It was a very popular game when it came to the arcades but
now you can play this blessing game any time you want at your
    own home!

The story for this game is pretty good. The bad guy in it is cool.. The bosses are loads of fun.House of the Dead II is one of the best gun games you can find for a system.
The zombies in these are cool.Any part of there body you shoot one part of them gets blown.

This is one of Dream cast strong holds before it lost it's popularity in the US.

This game is excelent for DreamCast owners...

    Other games of choice

    Resident Evil:Code Name Veronica
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The first Dreamcast installment in the Resident Evil series, Code:Veronica is "survival horror" at its finest. Unmatched in its ability toconvey a persistent feeling of dread--and scare the pants off of you ever sooften--this is one of those hard-to-put-down games that will keep you up forseveral nights on end.

The fourth chapter in the dark Resident Evil epic, Code: Veronica delvesfurther into the machinations of the sinister Umbrella Corporation, once againpitting players against zombies and other horrifying mutations created byUmbrella's biotechnological viruses. Players begin the game as Claire Redfield,Resident Evil 2's college-girl-turned-zombie-killer, and later controlChris Redfield, the beefcake cop from the original game. There's more strategyrequired here than in the previous games, as Claire's actions have a directimpact on Chris. For example, playing a trigger-happy Claire that uses everyhealth-restoring item in sight will call for some fancy footwork on the part ofbrother Chris.

While the basic game design here is largely unchanged from that of itsPlayStation predecessors, Code: Veronica features many visualrefinements--including exquisitely detailed 3-D character graphics, roamingcamera viewpoints, and spectacular atmospheric and lighting effects--thatgreatly enhance the cinematic feel of the game. Equally high production valuesare evident in the game's excellent use of ambient and dynamic sound effects.

Upon completing Code: Veronica, players are rewarded with "Battle Game,"a timed slaughterfest that can be played in third- or first-person point-of-viewand has rewards all its own. --Joe Hon

    Pros:

    • Engrossing storyline and well-developed characters
    • Cinematic Dreamcast-enhanced graphics and excellent sound effects
    • Challenging, first-rate gameplay
    • "Battle Game" greatly increases replay value
    Cons:
    • Despite nonfixed camera angles, viewpoint can still be awkward at times
    • Less than perfect controls

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game
Code Veronica is a good addition to the Resident Evil saga. Here's the breakdown:

Graphics-8/10- Compared to todays' games, the graphics are about average. Then again, the game is (almost) 5 years old. But it has rich 3D enviroments, and good definition in characters.

Sound-7/10- The music gives you the scary feeling you would expect from an RE game. The only bad thing is the voice acting. It aint horrible, just not what you expected. It's better than previous games.

Gameplay/Story developement-10/10- The gameplay itself is excellent. But, unlike the Dreamcast version of RE2, there is no custom controls. That would have made the gameplay better. The story continues directly from RE2 (RE3 did little to develop the Resident Evil Plot) and brings the fight to umbrella. To find out what happens to the characters, play the game.

Overall, the game's a hit. The Dreamcast version is the best, but if you don't have one, get it for PS2 or Gamecube.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in the series.
Simply put, Code Veronica is the best in the series. After RE2 I didn't think the series could get any better but I was wrong.CV had an amazing graphics and a superb camera system. The story was HUGE and awesome so this was the most time consuming RE at the time.I think the remake of RE on the Gamecube is longer (and 10 times scarier than the PSX version). If you have a Gamecube or DC and love adventure/action/horror games than Code Veronica and the rest of the series is definately for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why this game is SO F%$#@'IN AWESOME!!!
WOW! This is easily the best Resident Evil game EVER! I love everthing about it!

ITS JUST AS CREEPY AS SILENT HILL AND THERES NOT MUCH WRONG WITH IT. I GOT MINE FOR 9 BUCKS AT GAMESTOP. SO PICK IT UP
OR ELSE YOU WILL REGRET IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars favorite game ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
this game out back in 98 and it is still my favorite game ever. better than halo 1 and 2, all the silent hills , and every other game you or i could think of. now i wont lie it is not scary that is the only flaw to the game but who cares when its this much fun. some versioins have the extreme battle mode which isnt perfect but still very fun. i would give this this game a 1000 out of 5 but i cant so it gets the 5

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece in horror gaming...
Without a doubt, RE2 is the greatest horror/ action game ever made. The first one was good, but took place mainly in a mansion. RE2 spans out across a city, including areas like a sewer, police station, and even a laboratory. Graphically this game is beautiful for its time and holds its own today. The cut scenes were amazing when it came out, and still look fantastic. The voiceovers are also fantastic, and are very memorable. Many of the cut scenes are done with the games normal graphics, and this looks great as well. I actually didnt play it till the N64 version game out, but it was still amazing. I remember seeing the trailer when it came out for ps1 and I was thinking how amazing the graphics and realism was. Even the little things make such big differences, such as empty shells being released from a gun after shooting it. The game B mode is revolutionary, allowing you to have up to 4 endings. And the Tyrant is the scariest video game character i have ever seen. You never know when he is going to bust down a wall and jump at you, and his theme music is amazingly scary as well. The first time you shoot him down, after you leave the room you see a cutscene of the Tyrant getting up, and his theme music starts to play, that is arguably the scariest moment I have experienced with a video game. Many consider Silent Hill to be the scariest game, but I disagree, I think RE2 is. RE2 envolks emotions you thought couldnt have happened. Having two characters is the best thing about this game, though, each having different puzzles and weapons, and meeting new characters. Overall, this is the greatest horror action game I have ever played, and you should definitely play it as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghosts N Goblins - Very addicting!
Well, this is an oldie, but a goodie! Ghosts n goblins hits back to theold days, I remember throwing in quarter after quarter into the arcadeversion, and stayed up every night playing it on my NES.. Ohh, the good olddays *sighs* Now, you can get this onthe gameboy color! This game is sofun and addicting, I just bought this today, and my face has been glued tothe gameboy screen! The musick is pretty catchy as well, plus everytime youcomplete a stage, you are rewarded a password, so when you die, you don'thave to start from level one.. Pretty good idea, if you ask me. You simplymust buy this wonderful game! Arthur, the lance wielding hero rules!!

4-0 out of 5 stars for all you arcade old-timers out there...
i don't know how many quarters i punched into the arcade machine ghosts'n goblins. must have been hundreds at least. and now i can play the game wherever and whenever i want, just for as much as about 25 dollars. sounds good? uh, you bet! best thing is the back-up-battery so you won't have toplay the levels again and again. the arcade-port is perfect, you won't evennotice any difference. same for the difficulty: HARD AS HELL. youwill have to learn the levels, or you're gonna die. hundreds and hundredsof times. but if you liked the arcade (or the NES, or the mega drive)version, BUY IT! ... Editorial Review

Join Manny, the undead travel agent, and uncover a conspiracy to keep new additions to the underworld from buying a safe passage through purgatory. Grim Fandango combines a unique story line and complicated puzzles to create an adventure different from any you have experienced before. Follow Manny through four years of mystery on his quest for true love and eternal salvation.

The game opens to find Manny in search of the perfect client, one with the means to place them both on the fast track out of purgatory and into eternal paradise. Enter Mercedes Colomar, the client who has it all--beauty, brains, and enough money to buy them each tickets on the exclusive No. 9 train. Following the film-noir formula, Mercedes promptly vanishes, leaving Manny to solve the mystery behind her disappearance and her connection with the Department of Death.

With fantastic graphics--stylishly rendered in the film-noir style--and art from the Mayan, Aztec, and Mexican traditions, Grim Fandango is imaginative and appealing. The challenging puzzles call for attentive play and serious exploration of the Land of the Dead--not an unappealing job when surrounded by such beautiful animation. Include the original story line and humorous characters and you won't want to stop playing--we didn't!

5-0 out of 5 stars Casablanca With an Art Deco Aztec Twist
Grim Fandango has a very retro feel, sort of like Casablanca with an Art Deco Aztec twist. The game centers around Manny Calavera who is attempting to stay honest and make sense out of a Hispanic day of the dead afterlife which has been corrupted by those who control that afterlife for their own gain. All while Manny pursues the love of his afterlife! Confused? Trust me, it will all make sense once you start playing and the dialog and graphics will impress you and keep you hooked. I've tried a lot of the adventure games and they all have their flaws. But Grim Fandango comes as close to perfect as any game ever will. The controls are a little irritating but not as much as some newer games. This is the best adventure game out there and I strongly recommend that you try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still One Of The Best Games Ever
This is one of those games where you wish you could actually *be* in the game as one of the characters.I still load it upand play it again every few months; and I first played it several years ago.The storyline is one of the best, the voice-acting is perfect, the concept is fresh and original, and the graphics are still quite good even for being several years old. I keep hoping there'll be a sequel or movie made of this game; but I don't know how it could be done and retain the charm this game has.It takes a long time to play, but you never get tired or bored--the story is so engaging and the characters so interesting that you keep wanting to see what's going to happen next. The first time I completed this game, I just sat back silently for a couple of minutes, then said "D**n...this game is going to be a Classic!".Oh, and the music is GREAT.If you want to play a game that will honestly entertain, surprise and delight you, look no further.

And if anyone that worked on this game reads this, KUDOS TO YOU--I hope life entertains and satifies you as much as the joy of experiencing this game brings to me.Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful, my favorite game ever
