Game Boy Advance SP - Platinum by Nintendo Average Customer Review: Video Game (23 March, 2003) list price: $99.99 -- our price: $99.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Early Adopters Pick: March 2003. As theworld's smallest video-game platform, the Game Boy Advance SP is also the first to use a built-in rechargeable battery. Many decried the original Game Boy Advance's reflective LCD screen and its reliance on external light sources. The Game Boy Advance SP's main feature--optional backlighting--fixes this complaint nicely, but it's the wealth of other features that makes this system so surprisingly good. At first look, you might think the SP is a sleek travel alarm clock. When closed, it's just as tall and deep as the original GBA, but only half as wide. Due to its clamshell design, the screen is always protected from everyday scratches. A small button in the center of the console turns on the backlighting element for use in low-light situations, like in a moving car.
But size, power, and affordability do not come without trade offs. There's no headphone jack here, though Nintendo promises an adapter. The system isn't very loud at its highest volume, and the sound can be turned down to socially acceptable levels. The L and R shoulder buttons are a fraction of the size they were on the GBA, and thus are harder to hit. Also, the reduced size of the SP is slightly less comfortable for adult hands than the GBA, but perhaps more comfortable for smaller hands. The cartridge port placement on the lower part of the console is fine for GBA games, since they are flush with the console body, but older Game Boy Color carts will stick out in a way that takes some getting used to. Open it up and the hinge will seek out a preferred, pre-set angle (about 150 degrees), though you can open it a bit wider or narrower for your own comfort. The hinge stands up well to lateral pressure, and over all, the SP seems just as rugged as its predecessor--which has proven to be very rugged, indeed. --Porter B. Hall Unit Specifications

Texas Instruments TI-83-Plus Silver Edition with Graph Link Cable by Texas Instruments Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $169.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review
Leery of "special edition" products, we regarded the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition with some healthy skepticism. It's silver--so what? As you may have noticed, in the post-iMac era, everything electronic seems to boast cool translucent or glittery casing. However, the features of the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition are substantial, offering useful, powerful extras at a remarkable value. While the mathematic and graphing tools are comparable to the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition boasts significantly improved speed and memory. Its processor is 2.5 times faster, and it has over 1.5 MB of memory--10 times that of the TI-83 Plus. These upgrades make the Silver Edition a significantly improved graphing tool, enabling you to work faster and save more of your equations and programs. Like the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition has a large, easy-to-read 64 x 96 pixel LCD that fits 16 characters and 8 lines. Altering the contrast of the screen is intuitively easy, as is the key layout and graphing interface. Mathematic tools are substantial, including viewing equations, graphs, and coordinates simultaneously; advanced statistics and regression analysis, graphical analysis, and data analysis; and tools for engineering, financial, logarithm, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions. The calculator is ideal for students in algebra, calculus, and statistics, as well as those taking the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I or II, and AP College Board Tests.
The calculator is also rich in tools for those studying biology, chemistry, or physics, including a pre-programmed periodic table. Other programs included with the calculator include a spreadsheet, organizer for phone numbers, puzzle pack, probability simulation, and CBL/CBR applications. The most exciting bonus of the Silver Edition is TI-Graph Link, which lets you connect the calculator to a computer and download programs from Texas Instruments' Web site (http://education.ti.com) and from enthusiast sites like www.ticalc.org. There you'll find thousands of programs and games for TI graphing calculators, as well as a TI-83 Plus tutorial, electronic guidebook, programming support, and discussion groups. The calculator uses four AAA batteries and one lithium battery for backup. All batteries are included, as well as a hard slide cover, the TI-Graph Link software and cable, and a remarkably readable 60-page instruction manual. Overall, the improved power, faster speed, and included TI-Graph Link for a remarkably low price make this a truly special "special edition," and we have to admit that the silver casing does look pretty cool. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Sony DSC-S70 Cyber-shot 3.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $899.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Like all of Sony's Cyber-shots, the DSC-S70 uses a long-life InfoLithiumbattery for power, and stores images on memory sticks. The camera's CCD sensorhas an impressive 3.3-megapixel resolution and produces 2,048 x 1,536 images. Toensure the highest possible image quality, Sony has opted to use lenses made byCarl Zeiss, one of the most highly respected names in optics. Other usefulfeatures include a 3x optical/2x digital zoom lens with macro mode, USB imagetransfer, aperture priority and shutter priority modes, manual focus option, 60- second MPEG movie mode, and video output. ... Some users, I believe, have overlooked the advanced functions of the camera. The shutter speed, for example, can be adjusted in 13 steps from 1/8 sec. to 1/1000 of a second in taking pictures of a moving subject. And the aperture can be adjusted in 9 steps from F2.0 to F8.0. Another great feature is the selection of alternative image sizes. I used to use the 1290 x 960 size which would allow 96 images with a 64 mb memory stick. Then I found the quality of the picture was sufficiently good even if I went down to 640 x 480 size which would allow 760 images with the same 64 mb memory stick. During my recent vacation in France, I recorded several hundred images on one single memory stick. (But don't forget to bring your international electical adapter since you have to recharge the battery every night.) Lastly, the German Zeiss lens is definitely superior to other cameras' lenes on the market. I think that the camera has a good chance of becoming a collector's item since Sony has already stopped production of this model. ... Read more Asin: B00004UDQ1 |

PalmOne m130 Handheld by PalmOne Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $199.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Palm's m130 enters the handheld market as one of the least expensive color units available. Basically a colorized version of the earlier m125, the m130's bright backlit screen displays 58,621 colors on its 160 x 160 pixel screen. It also boasts an 8 MB memory with an expansion slot that accepts both MultiMediaCard (MMC) and Secure Digital (SD) cards for adding both memory and special applications. The SD card slot will also connect to SDIO (Secure Digital Input/Output) devices, including Bluetooth cards for wireless connectivity, and upcoming peripherals like digital cameras and bar code scanners. You can also attach peripherals to the base of the unit via the Palm Universal Connector, which enables you to use the m130 with keyboards, modems, and GPS receivers that are also compatible with the i700 and m500 series handhelds. The universal connector is where the handheld meets up with its USB cradle, which not only serves to sync up the m130, but to recharge its lithium-ion battery as well. On the highest setting (you can drop it down a notch in well-lit environments), the display backlight sucks juice at a moderate rate. But since the battery recharges at each sync-up, it's not much of an issue. Even if you run out of battery life and your m130 shuts down, you have about a week to recharge it before you lose the data on your Palm. Nicely contoured, with an attachable faceplate that flips up (letting you play Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock, if you're so inclined), the 5.4-ounce m130 rests solidly in your left hand with the right manipulating its standard buttons and screen with the stylus. One complaint we did have with the m130: at the edges, the screen doesn't appear to be as sensitive as in the middle and it can sometimes require a repeat tap with the stylus before it registers. In addition to the standard Palm Desktop software, the m130's impressive handheld software bundle includes Palm Reader (for taking e-books along with your Palm), DataViz's Documents To Go (for viewing and editing Word and Excel files; Windows users can also view and edit PowerPoint documents), and MGI PhotoSuite Mobile Edition (for viewing images and videos on the full-color screen). An IR port on the top of the m130 lets you beam contact information, such as your business card, or even an application, to another similarly equipped handheld. An inexpensive color handheld with a decent amount of memory and lots of room for growth, the m130 makes a great PDA for users looking to add color to their portable world. --J. Curtis Pros:
