Madden 2002 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (30 August, 2001) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Complete with all 31 NFL teams, as well as legendary teams from years past, Madden NFL 2002 delivers hard-hitting action. The 2002 release adds all-new player face and body technology and hundreds of new animations. Its upgraded coach animations heighten the drama on the field, and it's still the only game that lets the coaches roam the sidelines. Taking you beyond the broadcast, Madden NFL 2002 delivers exhibition, season, playoff, two-minute drill, and tournament modes. You can also play in franchise mode and take complete control in a quest for NFL glory. The 2002 release of this popular NFL series also takes you inside the huddle with new camera replay angles, and it delivers widescreen TV support. ... Read more Reviews (230)
Graphically, EA has done a superb job here, with the players faces and uniforms being portrayed very very well. They look way more realistic than last year's "we are space aliens who've come to earth and infiltrated your NFL players" looks. The coaches who hover about on the sidelines are the best looking of any football game to date. Heck even the snow looks nicer, it doesnt just fall, it blows in from the sides, as if it were really a blizzard out there. And yes, we finally have cheerleaders!!! Ea Sports' addressed concerns about last years ballplayers being all the same size, so this year, players are noticibly more slender, while still having that football player build. Like NCAA 2002, it reads the clock on your PS2, so if you're playing a game at night, it will start your game at night as well, or if you're playing at dusk, with the sun going down, you may start the game with the sun up, but by the time the game is over, it'll be dark. Little touches like this help to add realism to the game, theyre all over the place and it shows. Soundwise, its what you'd expect from a great title like this. A snazzy new opening kicks off most games, followed by player intros, at least from the home team. John Madden and Pat Summerall are back and Madden is as witty as ever, "he put too much mustard on that one!". Adding to the humorous reparte is Leslie Visser, with a few bits and pieces thrown in, proving that football announcing isnt just a male oriented sport. The game is literally overflowing with features. Theres the all-new two minute drill, where you run plays and try to get as many touchdowns as you can within the last 2 minutes of a game. I personally love this idea, as it lets you earn tokens for Madden Cards without having to play a whole game. Speaking of Madden Cards, theyre back, in the standard flavored, bronze, silver and gold. While they might not be everyone's cup of tea, theyre a great incentive to keep playing, to collect them all and unlock classic teams and stadiums. You can even collect cheerleader cards which give your players a (ratings)real boost. The franchise mode is deep as heck and goes on for an amazing thirty seasons. Another feature that is very nice is the ability to import your exported draft teams from NCAA 2002, if you have it (and who doesnt?). The controls for the most part are unchanged since last year, so even players who havent yet picked up a Madden game can jump right in with little trouble. There is a lot to like here, and while its not quite a perfect football game yet, its darn close. Do yourself a favor and pick up Madden 2002 today.
But....as has happened before in the Madden series, we've taken a step backward in gameplay. I remember in Madden 2001, I used to have passing dogfights with human counterparts. The passing game would be dominated by whoever wanted the ball more. You HAD to switch to the receiver/defensive back involved in the play, or you wouldn't make the reception or you wouldn't keep your opponent from making the reception. The game rewarded you for actually try to make your own plays in the passing game without CPU assistance, making it feel like the best player was winning the battle, as well as making the game more fun. In 2002, the CPU is superior 9 times out of 10 in a passing play. It's smarter to let the CPU make plays for you, both offensively and defensively. Therefore, if you are on offense, and you want to run a passing play- you simply push a button to snap the ball, push a button to throw, and hope for the best. If you try and toggle control to the receiver, the CPU defender will beat you to the ball most every time. Also, there have been times when other CPU defenders, who aren't even visible on the screen at screen at the time of the throw, will run underneath the play and intercept the pass, without any buttons actually being pushed by the defensive player. The same problems exist when you're defending. The CPU controlled offensive receiver will beat you most times. And to make matters worse, in trying to make a play on the ball, you've gotten yourself out of any position to make a tackle, and the CPU controlled receiver is running for an easy touchdown after the catch. That's just not fun, and it doesn't reward the BETTER player. I'm a Madden Vet, been playing since 91, and in the 2002 version, I'm getting beat by players who have only played the game a handful of times. Rookies of this series should not be able to handle the veterans like this. The people at EA need to go back and look at problems like these before 2003 comes out in the fall. If they don't, then I'm neither buying the game, or playing it.
Your game guides come in very handy thank you! I do own the game guide for "MADDEN 2002" it has made me a much better player. I hope this games keep getting better in every way! Sincerly, Julio ... Read more Asin: B00005MO5E |

Grand Theft Auto 3 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (01 November, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review With Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar proves that not alldevelopers are concerned with toning down the violence in their games. Thissequel is even more bloody, violent, and sadistic than its popular predecessors, offering up an enormous 3-D city in which nearly any criminal act is possible.Players are free to steal cars, beat up the local population for their money (orweapons), make time with prostitutes, or simply roam to their heart's content. Those seeking more structure can embark on dozens of plot-driven missions orsteal cars that let them play minigames. Nab a cop car and you can go onvigilante missions. Grab a cab and you can play a deadly version of CrazyTaxi. Take a fire truck and you can earn money putting out fires. The gamejust never gets boring. As in real life, there are consequences for your criminality. As your randomacts of mayhem mount up, the police start hounding you, eventually calling inSWAT trucks, the FBI, and even the army if you continue down the path ofdestruction. Shaking these pursuers is easily the most fun part of the game, especially when a bunch of friends are packed in the room to witness your narrowescapes. Grand Theft Auto III is fine-tuned to near perfection in every category. All the vehicles, from slick sports cars to lumbering dump trucks, handleexactly as you'd expect and smash apart realistically when abused. The threeislands in the game are rendered in terrific detail considering their size, andare packed with traffic, pedestrians, and hidden jumps. The audio is equallyamazing. Pedestrians talk, cops scream at you, and you can tune in ninedifferent radio stations whenever you are in a car. It all adds up to amonumental achievement: the rare console game for adults that manages to geteverything right. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Couple things I have noticed that you may have not. There is a car out there that has hydraulics you can trigger by pressing L3 button or R3 (can't remember which). Second, one of the radio dj's name is DJ Michael Hunt. Why is that funny? Think about when Bart Simpson prank call's Moe's tavern.
To be honest, I thought this game would be a terible game, Infact, I was avoiding buying this game. Man have I missed A LOT! Honestly, I's not that bad, to all of you "uptight" mom's. Ofcourse the premise of the game is to steal cars, but it's still very tame for it's mature rating. Alright, first of all, the ability to just jump grab any car you want and just jump right in, is AWESOME, I mean it really doesn't matter, as long as it has wheels and doors, you can drive it. From Station Wagons to Stallions and Ambulances to Firetrucks. When you're in a Firetruck or a Policecar can do these vigilante missions where you foil crooks, put out fires and rescue the injured. In this game there are 3 islands you can travel and roam in, irst of all there's Portland which is pretty much the same as New York. You get you're street reputation in Portland. Alright this game has it all, the violence, the story and even the hot chicks. And something that is really different is that the game is just enjoyable all the way through and you look forward to your next mission and you're always suprised and amazed by the bizarrely fun missions you have. From running away from the Triads is a Souped up Mafia car, to crrying a dead body to a car crusher, it's just all out F..U..N! The story evolves very well, and goes up as you would expect it, you start out as a lowly guy and work for Luigi, a pimp (to certain rights) and then, as your reputation gets better, and word starts to spread on your feats, you get contacted by Joey, Toni Cipnelli and Diablo himself. Wow, I want to play this game even more now that i'm writing a review about it. Oh, and the game has pretty much infinate replay value becasue of (1) it's length (by the time you beat it and star over again you won't remember most of the missions) and (2)Ther's just so much to do in between missions. From beating innocent civilians to "'Jackin' some sweet wheels" you can make a day out of it.(Honestly). Breakdown: Graphics: 15/10 Great, really crisp and really responsive, from busting up a car to shooting people...it looks real alright! Gameplay: 15/10 TONS of Fun, yet still simple. Of course it would deserve a 20, if you could crouch and commit drive by's. Fun: 25/10 This is THE best game EVER (well so far) you get to run around and kill hookers and civilians, and get to steal cars...it doesn't get much better than this. Difficulty: 10/10 can be a real "toughy at times", especially when you're trying to take down an armored car, while tons of cops swarm around you..it's a real nail biter. Overall:65/40 what is there to say, just look at the total. haha. Alright first of all, Buy this game, then play it and the first time you get bored of the game (about 12-18 months after you get it, research Grand theft auto San Andreas, it looks awesome. This is esential to any teen's PS2 game library. It's really a lot of fun to play, no matter who you are. I mean anyone with a PS2 should and must own this game. Even the most "Uptown" people will find beating innocent civilians a lot of fun. Buy it. Play it. Enjoy it.

Yes, in order to play AoC which epitomizes the development of the game, you need to install from both disks, first installing AoK, then removing it and installing the AoK:TC disk which you leave in the tray (it must be in there when you want to play). You can then go online to either Microsoft's or Ensemble Studios' websites for the game, Age of Kings: The Conquerors, and download the 1.0c patch which fixes any minor 'bugs' discovered and rectifies a few civilization "balancing issues" which have come up. Thus buying the Gold pack is a real good deal for anyone getting the game now as it cost me more than twice as much to have bought AoK & then AoK:TC, as they came out. There are so many ways to play this game that it almost boggles the mind, but preferred game modes are "Conquest" followed by "Deathmatch" in popularity amongst "Agers". If you really want to learn to play the game using the various "strategies" for the 18 civilizations which Agers have developed, it's a good idea to join a good Ager gaming clan such as Tonto Clan, which caters to both Multi- and Singleplayers. You can find Tonto Clan by doing a websearch for "tontoclan1", or look for "Tonto Empire". The clan celebrates its 2nd birthday the 13th of March, 2002, so you know they aren't fly-by-nighters. And that's a good place to ask any questions one might have about the game. A final thought: "Real Time Strategy" is a bit of a misnomer, oxymoron, in computer games as "twitch-and-bang" on the keyboard doesn't really give a person time to think, only act and react. But an aspect of AoC that makes it come closer to being enabled as a true strategy and tactics game is that you have the "Pause key" which when playing Singleplayer you can use to pause the game in progress in order to "think on it" a bit and decide what next you want to do. This brings yet another dimension to the game that most don't have. There are other RTS 'historically based war games' which have come out since "Age", but it is surprising how many people will try them and then just keep coming back.... to AoC. And, for my money the next RTS slated to come along that might be as good or possibly better isn't projected to hit the market until Spring (if then) of 2003. Ken aka tonto_real
All this improvements have the feel of AOE developers playing their own game and saying "gee wouldn't it be nice if we had this" they realy polished this game. It belongs in anyone's greatest games list. Easy! ... Read more Asin: B00005N9A7 |

Metroid Average Customer Review: Video Game US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (27)
Graphics: 4/5 - For the NES you really can't do a whole lot better. But still, I have seen better NES graphics than this, and this game really could have pulled it off a little better. Play Control: 4.5/5 - Simple but effective scheme. Shoot and jump. It feels a bit strange at times but it's good overall. Challenge: 4.25/5 - For being released in 1986 this game's TOUGH! You've got difficult platform jumps, sometimes over pits of acid. You've got enemies of all shapes and sizes, as well as three boss characters. And in the final area, you'll meet a deadly series of villains (the title characters.) These guys are not easy to kill by any means. This game uses passwords to save progress, not batteries like later Metroid games. I would've liked batteries in this game, but I'm just thankful you can save your progress. Theme/Fun: 4.5/5 - Excellent overall. In this game, as you go on, you collect items which basically upgrade yourself. Missile Batteries allow you to carry and fire rockets. Each additional one adds 10 to your maximum total, up to 255. Energy tanks add 100 units to your life, to a maximum of 699. The round ball lets you turn into a ball and explore tight spaces. The bomb power-up lets you drop bombs in ball form. The Long Beam gives you shots that travel the length of the screen. The Ice Beam gives you a beam that freezes almost any enemy. The Wave Beam is an ultra-powerful beam that goes through walls. The Screw Attack transforms your spin jump into a deadly weapon. The Varia decreases the damage total you take. The High Jump Boots do just what they say they do. However, the ice beam overrides the wave beam, and vice versa, meaning for the final showdown you'll have to find another ice beam. That's a little annoying but no big deal. With these upgrades you'll be more than a match for your enemies. If you own an NES this is a game you should not be without. If you don't own an NES, but have a GCN, GBA, cable to connect the two, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Fusion, and you beat Metroid Fusion, you can play this original NES title on the GCN (and save progress on a memory card!) This game is just too cool to pass by.

Enter Samus Aran. This was a game that offered unprecedented depth of play, was dark and grisly, and had great, mood setting music, and long, twisting corridors that led you deep into the Space Pirates' lair. An incredibly large game for the time, comparable only to THE LEGEND OF ZELDA and KID ICARUS of the first generation Nintendo titles, you could wander around for hours, exploring and gaining access to new areas with new items. I tend to think of KID ICARUS (why didn't this become a franchise???) and METROID as brothers, and ZELDA and METROID as first cousins. While ZELDA offers a very innovative, opened-ended (for the time) overworld experience with fantasy elements, METROID does the same type of innovation for side-scrollers, with a map just as expansive (though in a different format) as ZELDA. Which brings me to the actual game play of METROID. Metroid operates as one long map broke off into sections. There is no level progressions like Mario. But the game does contain you too certain areas that only opens up after you had receive new items. These items are cleverly hidden throughout the game's map, and just when you think you've come to a dead end, suddenly you bomb the floor and a whole new area opens before you. And the game isn't too kind when it set you down in that opening area of Brinstar. Equipped with only 30 energy units, Samus has to be tough to survive. Energy is scarce and can be time-consuming to collect. (Compare obtaining life in METROID to SUPER METROID; in SUPER METROID there's all sorts of energy). The energy being so hard to collect, and the ungodly complex password system, do flaw the game, but we have to remember this is a first gen NES title, so you have to cut it some slack. Now would be a good time to talk about METROID's glitch. Much like the negative world in SUPER MARIO BROTHERS, METROID has one of the most famous glitches in the video gaming world. Called the Secret Worlds, you use a wall jumping technique that enables you to get to "new areas" of the game that are otherwise unreachable. Thought to be a secret, an intentional programming easter egg, these Secret Worlds, while still fun to search for, are not intentional. They are glitches. Search the Internet to find out all about these secret areas. After transversing Brinstar and Norfair, getting new items, then Samus has to fight through the two bosses' hideouts and put them down before the final confrontation: Mother Brain. My favorite old school enemy, Mother Brain is a proven nemesis, much harder to beat than the laughably pathetic Bowser or even the more challenging Gannon. On top of that, once you beat her you have to get out of Tourian within a certain time limit (admittedly, it's more than enough time to get out). Even though Mother Brain's tough, we video gamers led Samus to victory countless times because of the stupendous game play and the compelling story. Once Mother Brain is dead and we get Samus out of Tourian, then the real payoff is unleashed. Samus is a WOMAN! And if you beat the game under certain time limits, you get different endings. During the days of rescuing damsels in distresses with a Brooklyn plumber or a green-clad boy, Samus's gender is very revolutionary, which brings me to the story aspect of METROID, which is currently under attack by ZERO MISSION. METROID's best features are successfully combines rich story-telling (for the NES) with innovative gameplay. This isn't a kid's game like Mario. This is a classic science fiction story, heavily influenced by Ridley Scott's ALIEN. Metroid is a story of a Space Federation fighting for its very survival against the fearsome Mother Brain and its two subordinates, Ridley and Kraid, who had stolen the Metroids and had their own devious designs for them. I have a sneaking suspicion that the boss Ridley was named after Sigourney Weaver's character and Ridley Scott. Gunpei Yokoi, executive produce of METROID (and also one of the chief developers of the original Game Boy), said that while ALIEN was never specifically discussed during Metroid's development, it cast a heavy shadow over METROID. That same dark terror, about never knowing what was around the next corner and how you were hoping, against all odds, that Ridley in ALIEN and Samus in the game would come out on top, forever cemented both tales in the imaginations of their prospective audiences. Because of the gameplay and atmospheric story, Samus Aran has become a classic video game icon. Thankfully, after many long years the METROID franchise has become alive again with new releases. But for those who want to relive the Samus's first glory, then this game would hold you enthralled. This is truly a classic game. P. S. Unfortunately, do to the realitive simplicity of the NES version of events, Nintendo has saw fit to introduce a radical remake of the game on METROID: ZERO MISSION, enlarging it and changing around events. While I enjoyed ZM, I felt it much to linear and went against what made the original so great to begin with: open-ended exploration. See my METROID: ZERO MISSION review for more details. ... Mike, we know you threw the Lewis fight so you could crush his jaw in the rematch. There was probably some backroom understanding that you had to be embarrassed and KO'd in order to get Lewis in the ring. I look forward to the rematch. Some advice Tyson... get some better trainers. The media and liberal nuts hate you, but you have a huge fanbase that loves your story and talent and wants you to regain the championship.
