Parasite Eve 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Three years ago, gamers were introduced to Aya as she resigned from theNew York Police Department and enlisted as a NMC (neo-mitochondrion creature)hunter for the shadowy government organization M.I.S.T., a secret agency ofmonster slayers somewhere between Ghostbusters and Men in Black.Wherever there was a neo-mitochondrion outbreak, Aya and her team were on thescene to put the boots to the mutants. From the outset, it's evident thatSquareSoft revamped the entire game to give gamers a better looking, sounding, and (most importantly) playing experience. The game starts with Aya training in the agency's shooting gallery in LosAngeles. Just as she begins to get in a groove, she is asked to look into somestrange happenings at the Akropolis Tower. When she arrives on the scene, anexplosive, full-motion video flashes across the screen and showcases the deathand carnage as Aya surveys the scene. Her entry into the Tower is where this RPGbegins. SquareSoft has kept some of the excellent elements of the weapons systems fromthe first Parasite Eve title, but went for an entirely new battle system.Combat is delivered in real time and allows players to run, hide, and open fire.Aya can tap into her parasitic powers and can unleash elemental, magic-basedattacks on the many foes she encounters. Ammunition is plentiful in the game andthere are plenty of entertaining weapons to choose from. Auto targeting andinvolving puzzles are back, though the arrow-pointing interface for solvingthese puzzles is really hard to operate. The cinematic mix of story and action is very well done, and the numerouscutscenes do an excellent job of moving the pace along in a believable way. Even though the original Parasite Eve had its problems, SquareSoft haspieced together an excellent sequel that will satisfy fans of the first game andhelp create many new ones. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

While completely unbelievable, I find myself quickly immersed with Parasite Eve II. An attractive woman called Aya Brea with a hardened background in New York crime fighting is back again fighting 'NMCs', neo-mitochondria, basically the disease mentioned above. I'm impressed with the realistic graphics and the all-too chilling cutscenes and rampant beasts; some are laudable, some disgusting, some chilling. Parasite Eve II now has an even darker glow to it, but loses it's RPG edge in place of Action/Adventure. I really love how anyone can sit down and play this without ever hearing of the first game, its a solid game with a good storyline. I can always play this game again and with more than one possible ending and multiple difficulties there is little chance I'll be bored. I give this four stars, mainly because I think the lines could have been snappier, the people sometime off-character and there are quite a few angles later in the game that are very annoying to manuever around. Otherwise this a great game that is worth the nine bucks they sell it for. ... Read more Asin: B00004W4QJ |

Perfect Dark [color only] Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The adventures of Joanna Dark, Nintendo's favorite superspy, have madethe jump from the Nintendo 64 to the Game Boy Color. Unfortunately, despitehaving some occasionally interesting gameplay and okay visuals, this PerfectDark is a huge misfire that disappoints on many levels. Sneaking about and trying to take out the enemy is the secret agent's art andshould be fun in itself. Tragically, it becomes almost immediately apparent thatthe use of stealth here is less than an exact science. It's too hard to tellwhether or not the enemy can hear or see you. Combined with mushy controls andinaccurate targeting for the gunfights, what you have is a game that feelsunfinished and rushed. The action switches to a first-person view for targetpractice and for picking off enemies in sniper mode. These few-and-far-betweenmoments feel like they might've been "borrowed" from another game entirely. The sound effects, for the most part, consist of the usual gun blasts andmortally wounded soldiers screaming "Medic!" and other cries of agony. There isquite a bit of speech in the between-level mission briefings. Unfortunately, theGame Boy speaker is so pitifully lame that nearly every sound is garbled anddevastatingly warped. Even Joanna's death moan is a comical, high-pitchedchirp. Perfect Dark allows you to exchange data and unlocked maps with afriend's copy of the game via the Game Boy Color's infrared port. You can alsoengage in two-player deathmatches on special maps via the separately sold Game Link cable. The only problem is that while the maps are decently drawn and a human opponentis (hopefully) smarter than the Game Boy, the same control issues of solo playstill linger. One redeeming quality of Perfect Dark for the GBC is its compatibilitywith the N64 Perfect Darkvia Nintendo's Transfer Pak,which supplies easy access to guns and other cheats. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Barbie Pet Rescue Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (25 August, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Forget the cat litter, all-hours dog walks, and outrageous vet bills; Barbie Pet Rescue features some of the most realistic, adorable animalswe've ever seen in a computer program--and without all the work involved inowning a real-live pet. Visit Barbie and her kid sister Stacey at the Pet RescueCenter, where you'll wait for rescue missions, explore in the playrooms, or tendto pets in the Care Center. Rescue missions come in over the phone or via e-mail; after learning which petis missing where, travel with Barbie on her scooter to one of three differentenvironments in which to search for one of eight lost pets. In many missions, you'll have to use your wits to figure out how to entice scared animals to cometo you, or how to retrieve pets trapped in trees or other sticky situations. Ifyou get stuck yourself, Barbie's full of helpful hints to send you on the rightdirection. With each successful mission, you'll receive a printable Paw & PurrAward that hangs on the PRC wall. Rescued pets come back to the Pet Rescue Center with you and Barbie to wait fortheir owners and receive a little TLC. Nurse them back to health in the Care Center, where you'll give recovered pets water, treats, vitamins--evenbaths and brushings; sometimes you may also need to bandage a hurt leg or pickburrs from ruffled fur. After creating a file for them in the computer andgiving them a name you select from a list of suggestions, the animals go to oneof two playrooms to wait for their owners. In the meantime, you can play with them, plus all the other pets already in theplayroom--a kitten, bunny, hamster, puppy, and even a turtle--in what is perhapsthe best of the game's activities: petting! Select which animal you'd like topet, then use the cursor to stroke an animal's head or back, or perhaps scratchher under the chin. The animals respond to your attention as they might in reallife, by licking, rolling over, purring, or barking. It's the next-best thing toa romp in the park with a real-live kitten or beagle. There is a related game for each kind of animal--Kitten Keepaway, Puppy Treat Toss, Hamster Trail, etc.--and if you do well enough, you'll see theanimal do something especially cute. A few of the games test kids' logic andspatial aptitude, but mostly they challenge players' mouse mastery and hand-eyecoordination; a speedy "click" finger yields frequent success. Our only complaint: once players have completed all eight rescue missions andthe activities in the playrooms, there's not a lot more to do. It's always funto pet the animals, but it's not likely to hold kids' attention for frequentreplay. That said, this graphically rich program is a real treat for any animallover. We plan on keeping this game around for those moments when wereally wish we had a dog around. (Ages 5 and up) --Leah Ball ... Read more Reviews (42)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (22 September, 2000) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Think of how much trouble we'd all be in if it weren't for Buffy Summers. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for instance, she's just trying torelax and enjoy a week off from her university classes when a herd ofhorrible demons and vampires descend upon the campus and surroundingtown. Now it's up to her (most of us are just too scared to do itourselves) to explore eight locations, including the old mansion and theSunnydale zoo, and make things safe again. ... On the plus side, the storyline is very Buffy-esque and the dialogue in the comic book style cutscenes fits the characters perfectly. Therefore, playing through the game and watching the story unfold is sort of like seeing an episode of the show play out..albeit through poorly drawn comic book pages. Unfortunately, the game itself is quite bad. The backgrounds are about par for Gameboy, but the character graphics are rather blocky. The gameplay is repetitive and mind-numbingly simple. Here's how things play out: You walk a bit on the screen. A vampire shows up. You trip and/or hit said vampire so he/she falls down. Walk over to the vampire on the ground and stake him/her. Repeat one or two dozen times. Go to the next level. Start the process over again. Some vampires are a little more powerful or difficult, but the technique basically remains the same. The first (and only) time I played the game, I beat it without dying once. I think it took less than an hour. Like I said, Buffy fans might still enjoy reading through the storyline, but don't expect much (if anything) from the gameplay, which offers maybe a few minutes of mindless fun before becoming tedious. I'd recommend a rental at most since, in all likelihood, it'll last about an hour and you'll never play it again.

Powerpuff Girls 1: Bad Mojo Jojo Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (11 November, 2000) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The slogan on the box says, "Powerpuff Girls are saving the world beforebedtime." Bad Mojo Jojo's repetitive gameplay, however, will put somegamers to sleep well before that time. Based on the Cartoon Network series, this title spotlights Blossom, thepink-clad leader of the Powerpuff Girls. The dilemma facing the girls at the start ofthe game is that Mojo Jojo has kidnapped the girls' mentor, Professor Utonium.Blossom must battle Bratty Little Princess, Roach Coach, and eventually MojoJojo himself (hence the game's name) to save the brave professor. The idea behind the game is to run or fly around the professor's home and lab, collecting all the goodies that the various robbers dropped in their hastyransacking of the place. The items consist of treasure, special graphic cards ofBlossom & Co., and health power-ups. Some simple puzzle solving is required to finish this game, but that reallytakes second fiddle to honing one's exploration skills and reaction timing. Evenwithout reading the manual--and who does nowadays?--most will quickly figure outwhere they're going and what they've got to do. If this series has a singular hook, it is that all three of the girls' games canbe linked though the GBC's vastly underutilized infrared port. Whatever iscollected in one cartridge can be sent over to another. In this way, players whowork together can more quickly gather all the cool collectibles in the game andget further ahead in less time. It's too bad the makers didn't spend a littlemore time putting a game together that was stylish to look at and engaging toplay. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

Gameplay stinks, too. The characters' attacks are monotonous, and the game consists entirely of exploring flat, side-scrolling locations and beating up bad guys. You're also supposed to pick up items along the way, but those are mostly pointless. I'm a diehard Powerpuff fan, but I can't recommend this game. It's too bad -- the Powerpuff Girls are among the few GBC games that would have strong appeal to young girls, and the designers disrespect them with this crummy game.

Mia Hamm Soccer 64 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (10 November, 2000) list price: $54.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In the past, putting superstar athletes on the covers of gameshas met with mixed results, because money normally earmarked for gamedevelopment is often used to acquire a high-profile license.Thankfully, Mia Hamm Soccer 64 doesn't fall into this trap. Whatwe have here is a solid title that offers up plenty of in-your-facesoccer action with one of today's hottest athletes. Mia has her own all-star team in the U.S. League portion of the game, and she offers gamers soccer advice from time to time. Her tips rangefrom the technical (such as curving the ball) to the strategic (exactlywhat kind of defensive formation you should be using when you are inthe lead). Silicon Dreams and Digital Creations Studios developed Mia HammSoccer 64. They seem to have borrowed the look from Konami'sInternational Superstar Soccer and some of the touch passing andball physics from EA Sports' FIFA franchise. The game has five different modes of play: quick start, exhibitiongame, season, cup tournament, and practice. In the practice mode, youcan shore up your throw-ins, corner kicks (which will allow you toperfect the header), or bicycle kick into the back of the net. But the biggest gripe here is that the game's artificial intelligenceis not up to snuff. Of course, simply playing the game with friends canrectify this, but the fault can be frustrating for the single scorer. But then, just as in a real game of soccer, getting shots on goal andscoring can be challenging. Mia Hamm Soccer 64 is a great starter game for female gamers whowant to see their idol and soccer fans who just want to plug it in andstart playing. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

Perfect Dark Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A first-person shooter that mixes spy and sci-fi, PerfectDark is both a thoroughly engrossing one-player experience and ariotously fun multiplayer romp. Easily one of the best games of itsgenre on any video game console, this long-awaited follow-up toGoldenEye 007 is a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners--and a damngood reason to be one if you're not. The futuristic Perfect Dark casts players as Joanna Dark, asecret agent who becomes embroiled in a sinister conspiracy involvingaliens and an evil corporation. Gameplay is broken down into missions, each with objectives that must be unerringly completed beforeprogressing to the next mission. This is not your typical kill-anything-that-movesgame: putting a bullet in the wrong person, not keeping theright one alive, or perforating a seemingly unimportant inanimate objectcan often result in mission failure. While Perfect Dark's solo missions play out much like those inGoldenEye 007, the game's fantastic multiplayer options areanother matter entirely. Cooperative and counteroperative simultaneous-playmodes allow for another player to join in on a mission as,respectively, a teammate or the enemy. However, the real fun here is inthe highly customizable Combat Simulator, a one-to-four-playersimultaneous-play mode that features both free-for-alls and team-basedchallenges and can include up to eight Simulants, computer-controlledcombatants of varying behavior. Although Simulants make for decent adversaries or teammates, you'll wantto grab a friend--and an Expansion Pak, as only 35 percent of the gameis available without one--to fully enjoy Perfect Dark. --JoeHon Pros:
