5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Writer Who Loves the Dark
If you have one of this hot new PowerBooks with the glow in the dark keyboard, then you don't need one of these, but if you are like the legions of normal men and women who can't afford to shell out thousands of dollars for a laptop, but you still want to work in the dark, because maybe you're on a plane and the movie's going, or maybe you're in bed and your spouse objects to the lights on while he/she's trying to sleep, or maybe you just like the dark, then this baby is for you. I'm one of those dark loving people, a writer of stories scary and the dark is essential for me. This little light keeps my trusty old iBook's keyboard lit up and not much else. Perfect for a writer in the dark. Thumbs up from me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thing does its job well
This is a handy tool for a laptop in low light. Nice little thing...

Only thing about it is that some light escapes out the side even when pointing down. Also its not long enough for some purposes. Plus sometimes it slumps from the USB port.

    I like this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flylight does the job in low-light conditions
If you ever use your laptop in low-light conditions, such as:

    - on an airplane
    - outside
    - in a darkened room

the Kensington Flylight is perfect for giving you enough light to see the keyboard without lighting up a room. The stalk is flexible, allowing for easy aiming--and the light curls up easily and can be stashed into a side pocket of your travel bag.

It's a gem...I love mine, and would buy another if I lost it.

Bonus idea: this could also be used with a desktop machine (probably need a USB extension) if you prefer a soft glow over your keyboard instead of an overhead light. It's also much cheaper than choosing an illuminated keyboard. ... Read more

Griffin Technology PowerMate USB Universal Controller, Aluminum

    Editorial Review

Stylish, versatile, and extremely functional, the Griffin PowerMate universal controller may look like a mere volume knob, but don't be fooled--it can also jog through video footage while editing, scroll through long text documents, and zoom in and out of Photoshop images. And those are just a few of its potentially hundreds of functions. How can a simple two-direction knob do all this? By letting users configure the functions themselves via their computers' system preferences. In other words, the PowerMate's functions are defined almost entirely by the user's imagination and creativity.

The PowerMate works by sending keyboard shortcuts, called key commands, to your computer. For example, users can set the PowerMate to open a new Microsoft Word document by inputting [command + D], or highlight text by inputting [command + shift + left arrow]. Each setting corresponds to one of the PowerMate's six main movements: rotate left, rotate right, click, long click, rotate left with click, and rotate right with click. The default configuration controls your computer's volume, along with specific audio applications such as iTunes. However, the PowerMate also comes with several preset configurations for such programs as iPhoto, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Acrobat Reader, and allows the user to change the settings or add new ones (for virtually any application) based on their needs.

    Design and Setup
With its heavy-duty, black housing that sits atop a pulsing blue light, the PowerMate just looks cool. Many owners have compared it to the volume knobs on high-end stereo receivers, and the description is apt. It's also cleverly engineered, as the blue light responds to your commands, brightening when the volume increases, for example, and dimming when you turn it down. Its main cord is only 22 inches long, but it comes with a 40-inch extension so you can position it either next to your mouse or on the opposite side for two-handed control.

The PowerMate, which connects to your computer's USB port, includes an installer CD, with separate folders for Mac OS 9; OS X; Windows 98, 98 SE, and Me; and Windows 2000 and XP, along with an Acrobat user's manual. Griffin has been making Apple accessories since 1992, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that the PowerMate is a little Mac friendlier. Mac users merely need to run a basic installation and restart their computers and the PowerMate is ready to go. Windows users, on the other hand, will also have to configure their PCs to recognize the USB device and then update their drivers, among other hurdles. It shouldn't take terribly long, but it's not exactly plug-and-play either.

    Features and Performance
Simply put, we dig this device. For applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, it's mostly just a fun add-on, as it doesn't do much that a mouse doesn't do just as well (though Mac users will doubtless appreciate the scrolling function). However, the potential of the device increases exponentially when applied to editing software. In GarageBand, for instance, you can set the PowerMate to play, pause, rewind, record, and skip measures--a far more convenient method than clicking the buttons or keys. You can also use the PowerMate as a jog/shuttle dial when editing your home movies. You can even adjust the speed of the action--a slow speed will leisurely advance the frames, while a quick speed will fly right through them. We tinkered with the PowerMate in iPhoto as well, setting it to zoom in and out of images (as suggested in the manual) and rotate them left and right.

It takes a while to adjust to the PowerMate, as your first instinct is to use it like a mouse. But you'll soon realize that shifting the knob across your desk doesn't accomplish much, so you'll be forced to develop a better feel. Many music and video editors will likely opt for two-handed control, managing the PowerMate in the left hand and the mouse in the right. Users should also test a variety of key commands in each application, as it's not immediately clear which functions are merely fun and which are genuinely convenient. But the more you play with the PowerMate, the more you realize its potential.

On the whole, the PowerMate is a blast, especially if you spend a lot of time laboring in multimedia applications. That doesn't mean it's a great fit for everyone--people who work exclusively in Word or Excel might find it overhyped. But you'd be hard pressed to find a desktop peripheral with more promise for audio and video professionals. --Rivers Janssen

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks Cool, has some WinXP Driver Problems
Although the PowerMate looks cool, it was designed for equally-coolApple computers. There are some driver problems in WinXP where the PowerMate works only intermittently--it will randomly stop responding, and will only resume operation if the USB cable is unplugged/replugged.

When it works, it does what it should. If you are a WinXP user however, you can't rely on it actually working.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for scrolling alone
Very cool, Very handy, Very nice design.

I love it. Scrolling is superb but also use it for other tasks in all apps. Like changing the brush size in Photoshop while painting with my Wacom tablet.

5-0 out of 5 stars You "get it" or you don't "get it"
So many people are probably baffled by this device. They think it is just a knob that does nothing but look cool, but these people are WRONG. You can do so much with this device. It has per-application settings, so you can have one setting for iMovie and another setting for the Finder, etc... You can have this device alter your sound volume, scrub through movies, perform commands. For example, you navigate through your iTunes library. The software is so open-ended, you can have a click simulate a key combo. The software even distinguishes between click and "long click." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars works fine, good features
I bought this from MicroCenter about a week ago, and it's been working great.
I haven't used the amp, but rather have been using the RCA in/outs to get audio into my PowerBook via USB. It records fine into GarageBand and plays fine from iTunes.
I have a Mackie mixer and a MOTU MIDI interface, so all I was looking for was some two-channel in/outs. I didn't need any mic preamps, and the lower end offerings from M-Audio and Edirol were more expensive and seemed kinda iffy.
I gotta say a love all the extras - it included a USB cable (why don't printers come with them?) and a couple of RCA to 1/8" cables. Plus, it can run off of bus-power (but comes with an AC adapter for when you're not travelling), and it has an active, one port USB hub. Neither of those last two features are mentioned on Griffin's website, but they're pretty nice--I didn't lose a USB port or have to buy a hub!
I agree the design isn't sleek, and the blue light SUCKS, but so far everything else is cool. I hope the amp sounds good if I ever need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another bad experience with OS X
Other people have left detailed reviews; I wanted to add another voice to the growing chorus of "this product does not work with Mac OS X." It's completely useless, due to constant distortion of the audio output.

2-0 out of 5 stars output great but input...........
A great unitas far as the amp is concerned but trying to use this for recording is worthless. I bought this specifically to use with a G4 Mac, rather than the line-in, and it was a mistake. I get better sound with a simple patch cord and the MIC input on the computer. I have tried it on 4 different computers with 4 software packages and all had the same results. The audio via the Powerwave is clipped and distorted no matter what I do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Unless you enjoy pressing buttons several times to get the mouse to work, I would stay away from this mouse! The movement is very jerky and you have to press real hard for it to respond. This is a replacement fromt the first one, and it is no better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice.
This is a nice feeling, nice looking mouse. A lot of people complain about the scroll pad, but I like it. It scrolls smoothly down pages. What isn't mentioned is if you click the button under the scroll pad, it switches it so you can scroll a page from side to side. The software that comes with the mouse is great. I am using a mac, running OS X 10.3.4 and have experianced no problems. It is a perfect replacement for my broken Microsoft Intellepoint mouse.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent results
Used on a Mac OS X machine running 10.2.6. I found the other reviews really interesting because of their inconsistency. Many had trouble with the scroll pad, yet that part worked perfectly for me. The right clicking was also perfect. Where I had problems was in basic (left) clicking. I don't think it was an RF problem. I tried both channels, and as I said above, most of the functions worked fine.

Half the time it was as if the mouse (or perhaps the receiver cradle) would not detect a mouse up event. I'd click, and the system acted as if I was holding the mouse down. If I then quickly moved the pointer, usually the mouse up would get acknowledged.

The other half of the problem was mouse clicks not being registered at all if I clicked too fast. However, "too fast" for the Studio Mouse was no problem for any other mouse I?ve ever used.I had to force my self to hold the button in the down position a little longer than is natural for me. So what that gave me was a tiny timing window between "too fast" of a click and the system deciding I was holding the mouse button down. Argh! The last place you want to deal with thinking precisely about how fast you do something is with basic mouse input. The mouse ceases to be an extension of my mind and body.

There's probably something amiss in the mouse driver for the Mac OS. I suspect a conflict of some sort because it does seem to work fine for some, but I don't have a lot of extensions in my system. Unfortunately. I find I have little desire to spend the time and effort to track down a problem with something as basic as mouse clicks. Sorry Kensington, but it's back to the wired Intellimouse for me on the Mac.

All is not lost. The Studio Mouse drivers for Windows seem to not have these problems, so I'll be bringing it to work where I'm forced to use PCs, and I have a situation of a fairly long distance between my mouse area and the PC case. I bought it for the Mac, though, so that's why the 2 stars. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Different, but so what
Liked the design and uniqueness of this mouse when I saw it online.
Once I got it, it wasn't as comfortable as I'd hoped and not very good tracking features. It eventually died after about 6 months.
I generally like Kensington products, but I'd say is okay if you want something new and different, but for the price it isn't worth it.

2-0 out of 5 stars All the lights were on, but...
I have the wired version of this mouse, and I am a fan of Kensington's mice--heck, besides Apple's, I have never used another brand. But I digress...

I was disappointed by this mouse for a couple of reasons:

    1. Instead of charging via USB--which could be done--the dock for the mouse has an AC adaptor which plugs into the USB plug.It just looks awkward.

2.The mouse is not very responsive.Often, I would have to click twice for a menu or dock item to be selected.Scrolling long menus was a joke since the mouse would disengage before scrolling the entire menu.

I was disappointed, and I returned it immediately.I love the design of the Studio Mouse, so I am using the wired version again.

1-0 out of 5 stars big tracking delay
I was warned by someone that a friend had bought one of these and returned it because of the delay. I went ahead and bought it thinking I could adjust the tracking speed to something I liked...it didn't work. The pointer is behind all movements, and at the fastest settings, once it does get moving, it jumps and hops. I'm taking it back. Don't waste your time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and durable
I have owned my first one of theese for a year now and haven't had any problems.Configuring it might take a while, but it is not hard. And WOW, it is very very very configurable, macros, mouse, key strokes, excelent. But most important, I have a little naphew (4 years old) he learned to use this to play, even with his small hands, and yes, he some times gets a little careless and drops it, gets tangled with the cable, etc.The only thing he hasn't done is deliberately jump up and down on it, and it still works.I bought a second one a month ago to replace a Logitech controller thath could not handle my naphews hiperactivity.

1-0 out of 5 stars GOOD CONTROLLER L@@K!!
so i get home from the "store" with my perchus and i take it out of the box but there is not a conroller in ther i just see plastic but then i turn it over and i found my new PC Pad. to my happiness i descover that my Purchase has a "Action Staybilizer Bar" i did not no this was included when i paid the cashieress my money at the counter but i am glad it is included in the package because it is Futuristic Ergonomic and unique. after i returned with the Pad i went Online to look up some features and the websight listen a lot of neat things that i am exited to try out in my games (i ply madden and sims and ea gmes if u want to look me up sometime (Fr4gSnipurrD34th -thx RedCaptain12 for the sig!! =OB))). one of this things liek i said was an "Action Stabiliser Bar" this is porbably the most obvious thing. it is this like rainbow-shaped handle thing and it helps to stabilise the controller because u might be moving it too much during intense game play to do ur best but now that is taken care of thanks to bElkin. also another thing about this Partilar Controller is that it has about six Showlder buttons for u to use in ur gaems . i havent used it yet but i am exciter and wuld definitely reccomend this 2 anyone looking for a good pad to use on Their PC ofr games like Roms and Madden (dunt email me i dont know where u get Roms ;-) ull just have to look on your e own one place i can say is try searching on www.google.com for Roms or yahoo.com which is better but sometimes wont load on my PC im not sure why).

    FiVE STARS!1!!!!
PS the websight says the ation Staybilizer Bar" will help u with "more Balanced Play" so hoepfully i wil be able to beat my brother now at Sims becuz he is better then me but he doesnt no i have this new controller :-)!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars HOLY MOLY!
This gamepad is amazing. At first I doubted the Action Stabilizer Bar.I then realized it's genius, with this Bar, my action would be stabilized.I would no longer have the dangers of the gamepad slipping out of my hand during intense moments of play. Many a time playing 2d independent games has the controller taken life of it's own.

While at first appearing unwielding and a bit insane in design, the controller is very comfortable. It fits like a glove. If your glove size is the same as mine. You know what I mean! :)

The copper on the underside makes the controller nice a comfortable. It rubs off on your hands so latter when I'm out with the ladies i can say I was in my workshop making things from copper instead of playing a video game.It really helps.THANKS BELKIN! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Manufacturers have made it increasingly easy to connect a host of FireWire and USB devices to your computer, but often at the expense of the microphone port and other jacks. Enter the Griffin iMic audio adapter, an affordable USB device that lets users connect microphones, speakers, cassette decks, and virtually any other audio source to their Macs and PCs for recording or playback. Among its many uses are recording voices or instruments for home movies, turning your laptop into a DJ studio, or converting your LPs and cassettes into MP3s or CDs. The iMic includes two 1/8-inch mini-jack ports (one mic/line-level input and one speaker output), along with an RCA-to-miniplug adapter for connecting audio components such as phonographs. Thanks to a small toggle switch on the unit, the microphone input can handle both mic-level recording and line-level signals. In addition, the iMic works with most recording software, and even comes with a CD-ROM loaded with Final Vinyl for Macintosh (for recording LPs), along with trial versions of several other applications.

    Design and Setup
The iMic looks like a compact version of the sleek power adapters that come with iBooks. Its major shortcoming from a design standpoint is the length of its cable, which measures a mere foot-and-a-half long. Users who plug the device into their computers' rear USB ports had better hope that their other peripherals have far longer cables; otherwise, they'll be huddling close to their hard drives while recording. Installation was effortless, however--simply plug the iMic into a USB port and you're ready to go. The iMic is both Mac and PC compatible, though owners of pre-OS X and pre-Windows XP operating systems may not be able to enjoy its full array of features. For instance, the iMic only acts as a recording device for Windows 98 SE and 2000 systems, and is unable to output music. Some users have also reported the need to update their firmware in order for the iMic to work properly.

The iMic comes with a quick start manual, but it's fairly minimal, which could make it a bit confusing to operate for people who don't have recording experience. Fortunately, Griffin's web site (www.griffintechnology.com) spells out the instructions in relatively good detail. Mac users should note that they'll need to fiddle with the Speech and Sound Preference panels and enable the "iMic USB audio system" before use, while PC users will need to select the iMic under the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel.

    Features and Performance
We tested the iMic in two different applications--converting a cassette to MP3 and recording a voice with an external three-pin microphone using Griffin's GarageBand microphone cable. The cassette conversion went smoothly. After connecting the tape deck through the RCA-to-miniplug adapter and flipping the toggle switch to the line-level setting, we used the Final Vinyl software to convert the files to WAV format. Once the files were recorded, it was simple to import them to iTunes and convert them to MP3 or AAC files. Given the symbiotic relationship between iTunes and the iPod, it was also a snap to sync the files for portable play. The audio quality was quite good for a low-priced sound card--the iMic offers 24-bit audio processing, though most computers support a maximum of 16-bit sampling at this juncture--and thus was restricted more by the quality of the initial cassette than the iMic itself. However, the increased capacity bodes well for future upgrades.

The device also recorded the microphone audio quite easily, this time into the GarageBand application for the Mac. The recording quality in this application was also good--no background noise or static. As with the cassette example, the quality will likely depend more on the source equipment and software than on the iMic. When we were finished, it was simple to transfer the recording to other multimedia applications, such as iMovie. One source of confusion, however, was the toggle switch, which we had to move to the microphone setting (which includes a preamp) for proper operation. The problem is that the toggle switch is counter-intuitively labeled--the microphone setting is under the speaker icon rather than microphone icon--so it's easy to set it incorrectly and wonder why the input isn't working.

On the whole, though, the iMic is a very good value for the price, and is a great addition for Mac users who miss the once-standard microphone ports. Serious musicians and other high-end users should probably invest in professional equipment, but the rest of us will have a ball. --Rivers Janssen

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great With My Mac Mini
I bought a Mac mini a couple months ago to archive my tapes & photos (among other things). To convert my tapes to CD/MP3 I had to have some sort of USB or Firewire input device. Most pro Audio interfaces are over $100 and I figured what the heck, I'll try the iMic and even if it is a dog, I'll only be out $30 or so. Well, this little device provides great simultaneous 2 way stereo sound (i.e. recording/monitoring simultaneously) and I love it. The A to D converters on this thing are very good and I am totally pleased with the quality of the audio. My only gripe is that the line level/mic switch on the iMic seems to be labeled backwards as line level is with the switch towards the Mic icon. Griffin, why this one little flaw???

I plan to do some guitar/vocals thru the iMic via my Behringer mixer. But that is in the future. For $30 you can't go wrong. If I had paid $100 I would be saying the same thing. The only problem I have had recording is the 4200 RPM Mac Mini hard drive is apparently too slow (even with iMic plugged directly into computer and with audio buffers at various settings) to keep up with realtime recording and this causes severe audio stuttering.

The solution was to buy an external Firewire hard drive. Recording to an external firewire drive has totally solved my audio problems and so far I have converted about 15 audio/voice cassettes to CD and into my iTunes library as MP3s. All flawless and clean.I listen to my old cassettes on my iPod shuffle now. I use Bias Peak LE and Bias Soundsoap to record/clean up the audio and let me just say that my little audio rig with the iMic as the front end....is AWESOME!!! You can't go wrong with this little jewel. I am one satisfied customer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for specific uses; not for others.
First, let's describe what this is: it's a sound card. That means it offers analogue to digital and digital to analogue conversion on the device itself, and is capable of shuffling that data over a USB connection to your computer. It is _not_ a cable adaptor, which confused one previous reviewer; it is _not_ a "live" device - you can't use it as part of a studio monitor, which confused another. It is similarly _not_ a format converter. However, it _is_ useful for bringing in analogue sound to your Macintosh (or, in theory, PC).

The hardware itself is pretty impressive for the price, when dealing with line-level input. Drum captures are surprisingly crisp; piano capture is surprisingly lush; vocals are strong. It is _not_ professional equipment, but it's also not $300; the value for money is quite high. The input fidelity is significantly better than my Powerbook's onboard A/D converter, and the other, more expensive, card I have in our PC tower system.

On the downside, its analogue grounding and shielding is - perhaps unsurprisingly, given that it's a USB device - weak. In an RF-noisy area, you will probably pick up some noise that you won't hear on your stereo. I suspect this is where some complaints about hum have come from. I was able to create this problem at home, by playing with it. Insuring best possible ground connections on all other cabling, and adding some local shielding, can solve this problem if you live in an RF-noisy area. Similarly, turning off buzz-creating noise sources nearby - such as small motors, dimmer-switch controlled lighting, and so on - will help. This is not a disqualifying issue, but is one that should be taken into consideration.

On the other hand, the phono level pre-preamplification is simply poor - noisy and just kind of unpleasant - and the RIAA equalisation preset is iffy. If you want to use this device with a turntable, use your own first stage amplification to get it up to line level. (If you aren't in a band or an audiophile, what that means is: plug it into your stereo's "tape out" sockets instead of connecting your turntable directly to it.) Given that microphone input is similar, you'll probably want to use a powered microphone, or route your passive microphone through other equipment, before digitising.

As for the software: "Final vinyl" is mostly disappointing. As a data-capturing utility, it's adequate; the ability to set basic equalisation at capture time is useful and works well. It can be successfully used to extract individual tracks from a longer capture.

But as an editor, it is woefully inadequate. Even the simple track-creating task it was built for is laden with unpleasant surprises. Clearly, they did not throw significant testing resources at the software; it suffers badly from the "if you don't use it the exactly same way we use it, random things happen" problem often seen in products from smaller software houses.

_Many_ seemingly-reasonable actions put it into an unrecoverably discombobulated state. For example, trying to add a cue marker to the left of an existing cue marker confuses it irredeemably; you will probably end up with random cue mark placing, and when you try to start deleting cues, end up with a negative number of tracks. It is also easy to reorder random segments of sound in such a way that it does not, in fact, appear in the editor, but does appear in playback; I haven't found the pattern to that problem yet, but it is recurring and may involve selecting ranges for post-capture eq adjustment.

Most of these problems require you to revert to original capture data and flush the undo buffer, which means lost work. However, if you can figure out how _they_ use it, I suspect it works pretty well; but I shouldn't have to work constantly to figure out whether I'm going to trash all my work by moving a cue marker the wrong way, or whether trying to bring down levels at one point in a sample is going to reorder or copy other parts of the sample at random.

In summary: very good value for dollar hardware at line input level; less so for direct turntable input; and if you're thinking about buying it mostly for the software, get something else. I wanted it for the hardware, and as such, I'm pleased.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for most purposes
I was a mac user from years back, and was surprised when I found out my new Mac mini didn't have an sudio in...I was planning on turning some casette tapes into MP3 files.

While it was usable for this purpose, it has a small noticable mid-range hum. This was not from my casette deck, as the hum is consistent no matter what kind of input I use, from casette to a small powered microphone from Radio Shack. It might be suitable for some podcasting, audio blogging, etc., it would NOT be usable for audio input into something like Garage Band... there are higher end products for that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Works like a champ
I am using this hub on an iMac mini with a Griffin iMic USB external sound card (for sound input), an mAudio 61es Keystation, a 250 gig USB drive, and occasionally a 1 gig USB thumb drive. It works flawlessly... I have never had any issue with it.

I am able to use Garageband to record from the keyboard to the hard drive while listening to the audio - all of that stuff is going through the USB hub without any hiccups - worked the first time without even thinking about it.

Except for plugging stuff in, I forget it is even there... What more could I ask for?

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hubs are Not Created Equal
I have heard many great things about Griffin Technology products but only sampled them recently when I upgraded my computer. This is a fantastic hub that confirms Griffin's great reputation.

I purchased this hub along with Griffin's PowerWave; they recommend that you use this hub with the PowerWave and the iMic.I'm told that most hubs are asynchronous (irregular) but the USB-Audio hub is isochronous (at regular intervals) -- a must for USB-audio devices.

The hub works as advertised (but two tips: if you are using a Mac and OS 9.1, you should update to 9.2.2; and if you are using the PowerWave or iMic, you should download the PowerWave Control at ...

BONUS: I have a thumbnail drive made by Lexar; it did not work in my old hub (yes, it was a powered hub). But it does work with this hub -- so I don't have to plug it directly into the computer's usb port.

SIZE: you may not be able to tell, but this thing is smaller than most hubs. The four ports are along the back, but the USB upstream connection and power supply are on the side -- so that gives you a sense of scale. The footprint is much smaller than my old hub.

If anyone had told me I'd be excited enough about a hub to write a review, I'd have said they were crazy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible printer
I thought my cx3200 was just a 'friday built' one - but no. I have used two identical models and they all had the same problems.

It has a dreadful sheet feeding mechanism, randomly it will grab 1, 2, 10 or all of the paper in the sheet feeder. Even if you are lucky enough for it to only grab one sheet, it often skews the paper.

The text print quality is poor. Surely this is a basic function any printer should perform adequately?

Also, the printer decides when the print cartridges need replacing. And you cannot use the other cartridge until the empty cartridge is replaced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine....cost of Ink Is expensive!!
I must say I really like this machine. The cost of ink is expensive, but like all things, you can get around it.First of all you can buy the ink cartidges on-line for $7 a cartidge. That is a lot cheaper than the $50 @ futureshop. On top of that you can can buy a chip resetter and fill the ink cartidges up yourself for even cheaper!!!!I highly recommend it!!!
I just printed off over 4000 sheets in the past three days. This machine did a GREAT job!!!Time to time, you have to clean the heads but that is nothing. (u just press clean heads on the computer and there you go)I would recommend this machine.I use this machine almost on a daily baises. However I wish the photocopier was quicker.Oh well.

THIS IS NOT A BAD MACHINE. IT WORKS PERFECTLY FINE. Editorial Review

For those of us who spend a majority of our days in front of our Macs squinting at the screen and clacking away at the keys, Macally has created the iMediaKey multimedia keyboard to make our lives easier. With the 19 programmable shortcut keys, you can access your e-mail, the Internet, CDs, games, and whatever else you choose to program with the simple push of a button. That means no more extra opening, clicking, dragging, and closing.

Some of the keys are already programmed and fairly self-explanatory--the envelope icon means email, the speaker horn with three lines emanating from it means volume up--but the keys numbered M1 through M5 are waiting for you to assign as you see fit. To help you activate the iMediaKey's functions, a CD-ROM is included with the package. The disc features a clear, straightforward manual, for which you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 to access. The install program will bring up the iMediaKey Manager, which will take you through the programming process step by step. If you decide to reprogram at a later date, just use the iMediaKey Manager to clear out the former applications and start again. Users should note the programmable keys are not compatible with AppleScript, the built-in language used to automate tasks on Macintosh computers.

Constructed of durable translucent plastic, the keyboard is sturdy and solid but still lightweight at 3.5 pounds. At nearly twice the size of the standard Mac keyboard, you'll need more room to fit it into your workspace, but you'll find that you're hitting the wrong keys less frequently once you get rid of the child-sized keyboard that Apple supplied. And the rounded space bar is great for those of us whose thumbs often miss the bar. With its 5-foot long USB cable, you'll be able to position the iMediaKey in whatever configuration suits you best, and the two extra USB ports on either side allow both right- and left-handers to connect a USB mouse to whichever side is most convenient. --Dana Van Nest

Software never did work right.Downloaded new software.Still didn't recognize the keyboard correctly.Never could program the "programmable" keys and only one of the other extra keys worked (ejected the cd like crazy). Finally, when turning on the computer, no keyboard.Tried re-booting several times, still didn't recognize keyboard.Had to get out an old PC keyboard.Save your money, buy an old, used PC keyboard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy on the pocketbook, if not on the eyes
Well okay, it's not absolutely hideous looking, just a little bit cheesier than the original G3 keyboard that came with the first iMacs, whose style it most obviously resembles. It is also huge in comparison, though you might just say it is generous in its layout. Most importantly, the iMediaKey is actually comfortable to operate, and its many extra programmable buttons are quite convenient to have.A really wonderful, if perhaps confusing, feature is that the F14 & 15 buttons, labeled scroll lock and pause, actually control contrast.I just love this, because otherwise on my iMac I would have to open Displays from a drop down menu and wait for the preference pane to load before accessing the setting. The Function keys respond immediately. Also of course there are volume control keys; they are grouped among the other rather small soft rubber media buttons. These have a real neat feel and I kinda wish all the keys were made of that material.
As for durability, well I only carried this keyboard home last evening, so I can't vouch for that. The two USB ports do not offer as snug a fit as that of Apple's keyboards, but they seem to be working fine none the less. The Power button also has a loose feel to it, but it rides in a deep well; so while I don't fear that it will ever suffer accidental damage, its spring might perhaps wear out before the rest of the device is shot.

Now if you are using Panther as your OS you might want to take advantage of arecent bit of shareware that can modify Function keys.Perhaps over-priced at $20, FunKeys X lets you program keys F1 through 8, Help, and Home, in ways more than do any of its free or similarly priced competitors. You can launch Google without first opening your browser, open any folder, file or application, switch to Finder, control iTunes, Undo, Cut, Copy & Paste all with one touch. It is configured through its own preference pane and is perfectly compatible with iMediaKey!

You know, after pounding out this review on my new Macally keyboard, my eyes have grown more used to it and I don't think it's bad looking at all.Yes, it's really quite attractive...

Feeling dizzy now, gotta go lie down...

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Apple's
This keyboard is great! It is basicly just like an Apple Pro Keyboard. The only difference is the extra 19 programable buttons. They can be used to do almost anything. The defaults have them carry outVolume Adjust, Audio/Video Player buttons (play, ff, stop, etc.) and anything else you want. The only thing I can't get right is the start-up key.But I believe that is happening because of my Mac model.Otherwise, perfect keyboard.I even used it to type this review! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Trackball I've ever owned
I hesitated to spend $100+ on a trackball, but I've had no regrets since I've been using it. It is worth every cent.

I don't use the 6 "quick buttons" on the top of it, nor the scroll button, since they are hard to reach, but the four basic buttons and the smooth and heavy roll of the trackball are indispensable.

I especially like the tactile "click" that each of the four main buttons give when they are pressed. This is a minor point, but it makes using the trackball feel solid instead of mushy.

I didn't like the blue plastic ball that came with it, so I dropped a billiard ball in and it is perfect. Very smooth, very heavy, very precise. (This is via USB on Mac OS X.)

Logitech Quickcam VC USB DV Camera (PC/Mac)
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $79.99

    Editorial Review

Remember just decades ago when video conferencing was a futuristicvision in sci-fi movies? Well, now the future is here and you can bring it homewith the Logitech QuickCam VC. Whether you want to email photos, shoot your ownvideo clips, or chat with friends and family over the Internet, you can do itwith the QuickCam.

Setup is simple. Take the camera out of the box, place iton top of your computer, and plug the cord into an empty USB port. Though youshould be able to connect the USB cable to any port, the camera needs extraenergy and should be connected directly to your computer or into a hub. Wetested the QuickCam with an iMac, and though the instructions say you can plugit right into your keyboard, we had to use a direct connection to completelypower the camera. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive and the software willkick in and instruct you in the installation procedure.

The QuickCam comesloaded with all the software you'll need to get started (if you have a Macyou'll need QuickTime, which you probably already have; if not, you can downloadthe newest version free directly from Apple's Web site). For video conferencing, use Microsoft NetMeeting if you have a PC, and iVisit if you have a Mac--bothare included with the QuickCam VC. Just follow the installation instructions toget going. Both QuickMovie and QuickPict have editing capabilities so you canadjust your images before sending them. Also included is Microsoft InternetExplorer and the screensaver program AfterDark as a full or regular screenQuickSaver.

The camera is a 360-degree rotating sphere on a triangular base.It does not rotate up or down, but with the 6-foot cable you can position thecamera at any height you like, and adjusting the ring around the lens serves asa manual focus. The QuickCam automatically adjusts to the correct light so yourpictures will come out balanced (but this does not mean you can take photos inthe dark; you do need appropriate light in the room). The pictures areincredibly clear, and like most digital cameras, have a slight lag time whilerecording.

Made of black plastic with a long elastic cord, the QuickCam isdurable and long-lasting. Remove the camera from its base and suddenly you havea handheld digital camera, albeit one that's still tethered to your computer. Aswith all cameras, we suggest you don't touch the lens--it's small and easilysmudged, but not so easy to clean.

An innovative and ultramodern way to visitwith family and friends, you can use the QuickCam to send photos or movies towhomever you chose in minutes. The video conferencing feature is wonderful forboth business meetings and for a more personal connection than a phone call. It's especially great for traveling parents to keep in touch with what'shappening at home or for students away at college to stay connected. --DanaVan Nest

4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, Easy-to-use Webcam
For those simply looking for a low-end Webcam and not intending to do anything requiring serious quality, this is a good choice. The software is easy to install (on an iMac, which I use) and includes plenty of options... including the ability to use this device as a "security camera."The image quality is rather grainy, so diehard multimedia creators should definitely steer away from this item, but the average home user is likely to be quite satisfied with this small camera.

I use this connected to a seven-port hub, and the camera still works quite well despite having many other devices also attached to the hub. However, whenever I activate the software for the camera, the Zip drive and floopy drive - both connected to the USB hub - shut down. This may be a potential drawback, especially for those for whom directly-connecting the camera is not an option due to the need for other peripherals.

Interestingly, I also have MyVideo (USB video capture/outout device) connected to my iMac.Whenever I open the MyVideo software for video capturing, the image from the QuickCam VC shows up in the MyVideo window! This almost certainly means that both devices are using the same set of system calls or video drivers. Therefore, if using the QuickCam VC in conjunction with other video-related equipment on the same computer, a few "surprises" may appear.(In my case, this simply means switching the video source within the MyVideo program.)

This camera was great!it is easy to use- just open the program, aim right acording to the picture that appears on the screen, and click the button- it is that simple! The only downfall I found was that the pictures it took were a little dull, as in the color was not very bright- but this is expected from this type of camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful
mac users, please don't bother. on the box it clearly states it's for any OS higher than 8.1, but apparently 9.0 is too much for it to handle. the software hasn't been updated since 1998, and on logitech's website the section for this particular camera is so old and neglected it's coated with dust. the FAQ for the pc version of this camera is ten miles long, but of course the mac FAQ is only two questions. but not like that's anything new for mac users. why is this webcam still being sold? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars not bad..
I've had this MP3 player since probably year 2000 and it STILL works surprisingly. Four years and it still works! I had a few problems...when I upgraded my PC to Windows XP. The drivers didn't support it so I had to search around and finally found RealOne had the Rio500 support. Well it being year 2004...there's iPods and these MP3 players that hold 5000 songs while this holds maximum 20. Well back then it was cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Rio support for XP users
This is a durable little MP3 player.I have had mine for about 4 years and it's still going strong.I also had the issue of the software not working with XP.Rio audio products are now owned by Digital Networks, but there is little to no help at all on their website for the Rio 500.Anyway, that is my only complaint. There is a great website called Rioworld.org that has several different freeware programs available that will let your Rio 500 work with XP. There is also a couple of recovery files in case you get a gray checkerboard screen (problem that can occur if there is a power failure during upload of a song).

To the person who can't transfer music to their Rio 500 under Windows XP, check out Sveta Portable Audio from http://www.dbpoweramp.com/. I've been using it since I got a new PC with XP installed and it works great, much simpler interface compared to the supplied Rio software. ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars DMP-120 MP3 Player Review
While the DMP-120 has an attractive pricetag, the unit itself
leaves a lot to be desired. The generous 64MB flash capacity
yields a lot of room for your favorite MP3 songs, but it suffers
from memory initialization problems resulting in loss of data.
Roughly 10 percent of the power-downs that were tested on two
separate units resulted in the unit locking up, requiring the
user to remove the batteries to "hard" reset the unit. While
this is not only inconvenient, data is lost or corrupted during
the hard reset most of the time, requiring the user to reformat
the flash and reload the memory. In addition to initialization
problems the unit exhibits what is most likely memory formatting
problems in the form of data loss or corruption. The symptoms of
this problem are that the first few hundred KB or so of every
song are either not present or cannot be interpreted by the
processor; in other words the first 1/2 second or so of every song
is not there and the song starts in what would appear to be
mid-stream. While this is not a major problem, it is perpetually
annoying and would be considered "unacceptable" by serious audio
enthusiast. In the defense of the poor engineering of the unit,
the customer service at D-Link was very helpful in replacing the
original unit (that was suspected to be faulty), but the supposedly
"tested" replacement unit exhibited the same faults.

1-0 out of 5 stars D-Link products lack quality
Bugs with this unit. Not recommended for recording lectures. It loops your recording over and over, even though loop is not on.High static noise during mp3 playback. Not worth the hassle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little MP3 player for running!
This player has been out for a while now ...and it has worked great. The sound quality is great and the features that come with this player is good. There are a few important features that comes with this player: lock for buttons (so you won't accidently push the buttons), external slot for SmartMedia card, rudimentary but effective equalizer, selective modes for different types of play options (single track repeat, all tracks repeat, etc..) and a sturdy belt clip which works when I run!

The only thing that I miss the most is a FM tuner. Also an optional arm band would be great for running. But for the price I got it at, I am not complaining. This little player is not flashy like the newer ones out there but it is truly worth getting if you want it for functionality and reliability. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good thing to own
I bought my rio500 about 2 years ago and it has done nothing but make me happy. With the 64MB it has already, thats just the right amount of music for a nice car trip, but if you are like me and need a lot of music, then you can buy an inexpensive smart media expansion card.I had many cards and could have about 5 hours of music all in one pocket...I enjoy how the screen says the title of the song, the amount of time that has passed, and the battery life.I didnt seem to have a problem with the included software, except that its just a demo. But recently i guess i got a virus of some sort, so if i want to format my media card, it would lock up my computer, and i would have to turn off my computer at the tower, which is not good. There are other kinds of software for it that you can download for free online, so please dont let the bad software come in your way from purchasing it.Please read the other reviews because i read them and some have some good points. As for the ones that say that the froze and stopped working, well, thats only if you abuse it too much.My friend had an identical player, and he dropped it into pools and lakes, dropped it down stairs, and other horrible things, so it froze finally.... so, if you take good care of your player, it will serve you well.I hope i helped!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great MP3 player
I purchased this from Audible for 99 bucks about 13 months ago. As an audio book device this is a wonderful player. Upgrade with another 64 MB Smart Media card and you'll get about 9 hours of very good quality spoken word. As a music player it is good but not great. Not enough memory for more than an hour or two of good quality music. The 500 has a quality feel to it that other players do not. It has the look and feel of a first generation device that was over built and probably wasn't intended to make a large profit. Very small, slips into a pocket and is rugged enough to stand up to a fair amount of abuse. Great battery life compared to a minidisc player I used to use - at least 12 honest hours of playback on a single AA battery. Subsequent Rio mp3 players are bigger and aren't as elegant as the 500. Forget the included software. Download RIOsitude from hotfiles.com. A free program that is intuitive to use, fast and reliable. As good as this player is the Apple iPod has established a new benchmark for portable players. The Apple uses a 5 GB microdrive which hasn't proven itself yet in terms of reliability but is certainly a step in the right direction. Bottom line is that the 500 is a supremely good audio book device, a great spoken word device, a good music player but too little memory for more than a couple hours of high quality audio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some very major flaws, but otherwise a fun toy
First, the good:lightweight and TINY, take it to the gym, or on a plane, and it won't be a nuisance. If you download a firmware upgrade from rioport.com a lot of the bugs are fixed and the interface is improved. Now the BAD:headphones included are crap -ditch them and get new ones right away.Holds about 15 songs on its internal memory - get firmware upgrade to allow you to plug in a 64MB smartmedia card.Everywhere you look it says you can only plug in another 32 but don't listen to that. All in all, I love this thing, its compact size makes it great. ... Read more
