5-0 out of 5 stars excellent game!
as long as you can get it to run adequately(which shouldn't be a problem), this game is the best FPS on the market. singleplayer tournament can be incredibly challenging on the mid-high difficulties, and singleplayer botmatches never get old... and then theres multiplayer, the replay value of which is infinite. definitely worth picking up if you enjoy this kind of game.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best.
Unreal 2003 is unlike many other games out there. The older Unreal Tournament in my opinion had amazing graphics, 2003 seems to have carried this tradition. It almost seems as if you were in an animated motion picture. For example I love how to grass moves in this game. Small things like this really make a game better. The requirements are steep though. On my dual G4/500 the game was almost unplayable (unless you turned off a bunch of settings). It is much better to run this game with a high end video board. About all the machines ship with a good video card though, even the Radeon 9200 in the iBooks handled this game well.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incrediable game
The first day I got this game I installed it and started playing online. After a while I started feeling hungry and realized that it was 2:30 in the morning already! The single player campaign is pretty bad, so I'd only recommend this to people with internet connections to play online. It does take a decent machine to run it well, but I got it running extremely smoothly on my powerbook 12" 867 simply by turning world detail and model detail down. The game looks fantastic, even with reduced settings. This game also has an incrediable online community that is constantly churning out new maps and mods that transforms it into a completely different game. All in all, I love this game. In my opinion it is one of the best first person shooters avaliable right now. Highly reccomended ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No Save Feature
The graphics are very good. This is a game that requires a lot of planning and memorizing keypad commands, but this can be fun once you've learned your way around.

The huge con: No Game Save feature. You can spend lots of time getting nowhere. Wanna buy mine?

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing port of an okay sequel
Having played all of the previous Rainbow Six games, I was glad to see Raven Sheild available just as I got a new g5.It's just as carefully put together and realistic as the previous versions, if not better. The AI has clearly improved, but there were few other major improvements since the last release. The big, showstopping flaw? The Mac port does not allow netplay against PC users.Get Ghost Recon instead, or UT 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac's Kick ass again!
Clancy does it again folks and if your lucky enough to be playing this game on the newMac G-5 with a top of the line Graphics card (128 pro) get ready for the best gaming expierence their is out there. Puts any PC availible to absolute shame. Top of the line graphics as well as super fast game play and no freeze up no matter how much ass kickin you do. 5-0 out of 5 stars Dont worry about low-end systems
A lot of the reviews I read before buying this games said that you need the best computer to run it. This is not true. I have an eMac G4 1Ghz, ATI Radeon 9200 32Mb Video Card and a 17" screen. This game runs fine even at medium graphics settings. Although there are some choppy glitchy parts, I noticed this also occured on some of my other friends' higher-end computers on the same settings. I would recommend getting it for Xbox although it is better to be played with a mouse and keyboard rather than a game controller.

On another note, those parents who keep track of what their kids are playing, do not let the M rating of this game prevent you from letting your kids play it. Rent it for Xbox or buy it used and then sell it back if it doesn't suit your standards. I would compare this game to many T games that I have played, such as Golden Eye: Rogue Agent, Metroid Prime, the 007 James Bond games, Mercenaries, and Star Wars: Battlefront. Most of the explicit content of the game can be disabled or won't even be noticeable during gameplay. The main thing that I have noticed to be a problem is the blood on the ground. Just a tip: You can turn this off in the Options Menu by locating the choice called Decals and disabling it. Other than that, there isn't really any other content that should require an M rating.

Let me add one more thing. If by chance some paranoid parent thinks that their kid might enable anything that they have disabled, trust me. Unless your kid just lives to annoy you and make you mad, they wont because they will be so thankful to you for getting this game for them, they won't do anything that might have a chance of taking it away.

REMEMBER!!!!!! Runs fine on a G4 1 Ghz Mac with a ATI Radeon 9200 Video Card....(The video card is standard for any eMac or iMac G4 or G5

Play it long, Play it hard!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jay Wilman doesn't know what he's talking about!!!!!
This game is the coolest, most action-packed game to hit the market so far!!!! Although the other games he has mentioned aren't to be looked down upon, Halo is by far the best. If single player gets boring, thats why there is a thing called internet, so you can play against real people with real intelleigence and far better skills that the AI controlled Covenant Aliens.

Buy this game!!! If not for computer, than for Xbox!!!

And for those parents concerned with ESRB Ratings, this game is very similar to many T (Teen) Games and almost everything that would give this game an M (Mature) Rating can be disabled or are hardly noticeable to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars The better version of Halo
I have Halo for the Mac.I also have an Xbox, and I would have to say that the original Halo is better then Halo 2 and Halo on the Xbox. One of the reasons that makes Halo better on the mac is because of the multiplayer. You can join in on multiplayer brawls in slayer mode(which is the first to 25 kills)or you could do a nice enjoyable game of capture the flag. Also in multiplayer you get to use banshees, flamethrowers, and fuel rod guns which you couldn't use in the Halo for Xbox. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really cool expansion pack!!!
I got this expansion pack for Christmas and so far it has given me now problems at all! I love this expansion pack and visiting studio town is awsome!!! I would recomend this game to any sims fan! I liked this one so much i am going to buy the sims unleashed next. This is a great game and i hope you enjoy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars not this one
I agree with the previous reviews. When it works it's fun but getting it to work is hard! My game only works with just the original houses, objects and sims. Any downloaded stuff and the fame career track shuts down. So I have one neighborhood with fame track and the rest where you can't only visit. Don't buy this one. Stay with Vacation and Unleashed - they aren't nearly so much trouble.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, as long as you don't go to the Studio Town
I purchased this game about two weeks ago.I was having a lot of fun with it until the game started throwing me to the desktop ( just as another person mentioned in their review).I continue to play, but I do not go to studio town anymore, which does eliminate a lot of the fun.I would like to be able to play in the Studio Town, so if anyone has a solution to this problem, please email me asap at : Liz@Hallmanstudio.com ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Demanding of hardware
This is a good add-on to Allied Assault, but you probably shouldn't try it unless you have the hardware to handle it.I first tried Spearhead on a G4 with 768 MB RAM, and eventually gave it up in frustration. In some levels (particularly the one that has you riding around on the top of a truck), the frame rate slowed down so much to make the level impossible.

However, I've recently gotten a G5 with 1 GB RAM, and tried Sprearhead again. This time, the computer was able to handle the graphics nicely, and I was finally able to beat that level, although it was still really tough.I found that the later missions (defending the frontline, and infiltrating Berlin) were quite fun.

All in all, a worthwhile purchase if you are not frustrated by slow performance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Huge Let Down
I loved Allied Assault, it had challange, yet ran smoothly and was beatable. But sadly, Spearhead is a major dissappointment.I made it to the Ardennes mission far to easialy, at which point it is unbeatable. My 800Mhz machine is running at about 2 fps for parts of it (the driving part), so is simply unbeatable.Friends with faster machines, even a duel 1 Ghz find it all but impossible. But on a positive note, the Multiplayer additions are very good, with New Maps, Skins (sadly they took out Manon :( ), Missions, and weapons.

2-0 out of 5 stars Simply awful performance, but a good game
This is an add-on pack to MOHAA - which was a great game. The content of this expansion pack is great. Essentially more of the same. More missions, etc.

However, the performance is so bad on this that I ended up quitting it and un-installing. My system is pretty fast, too (G4 tower, 867 mhz, 768 mb RAM).

The first few levels are ok, but the performance issues keep getting worse and worse with every successive level until finally, it just grinds to a blurred halt (ardennes forest, winter, half-track).

I've looked on the Web site for tech support or patches and haven't found a thing.

As a result, I really would have to discourage people from buying this game unless you have a super-fast machine to run it on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Muliplayer game
I found the single player to be rather lacking and unoriginal, but SoFII still offers a fun multiplayer experiance, I even got my Dad playing!A good game, but more one to go play at a friend's than buy yourself...

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best!
Soldier Of Fortune II has to be one of the best online FPS's for the Mac!There are a lot of weapons to choose from, lots of maps, many different gameplay options, and numerous voting options. The replay value is incredible...I had this game since day one and I'm still playing! The only bad thing about SOFII is that its very demanding.Make sure you have the hardware before you buy it.I reccomend 1GHZ proccessor or higher for good performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent FPS for OS X
The other reviews here give a good idea of what the game consists of, so I won't re-run that information. It's your basic first-person-shooter with lots of action, lots of firepower, lots of body count; and as some other reviewers have noted, lots of gore. If you like fps's, you'll probably enjoy this one. There's nothing too new about it. It's the same old you-against-tons-of-bad-guys thing. The comment I wanted to make is that I have switched to a pure OS X Jaguar environment with no 'classic' MacOS running. This game works perfectly in my new environment with one caveat: you have to manually change one setting in the video controls or you will have intermittent crashes. The change is extremely easy to make. Just go to www.macplay.com tech support section and it's well explained. Once you've done that fix, you're in for hours of spewing hot death. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good game!
Medal of Honor Allied Assault is a fairly good game. The combat situations are fairly realistic, along with the sound affects, and once again a great music score.

Gameplay: I though the gameplay of allied Assult was pretty fun. I mean how could running around shooting-up Nazi's NOT be fun? Though the combat in general is pretty realistic for a game, once again the running around by yourself killing 250 Nazi's isn't. It's pretty much impossible if you not at a machine-gun nest in real life. If Allied Assault had more combat with your brothers-in-arms that would rock! Which I have heard there is in Spearhead, Allied Assault's expansion. The controls were good for me, but if find there not for yourself they can be customizied. Which is very handy. Most of the levels in Allied Assaul are fun. From peration Torch to Operation Overlord and more.

Score/Sound Effects: Wonderful. The sounds of the the gun and everything are realistic. And like al MOH games the score is great.

Graphics: The graphics are a bit dated. Not the best but thhere okay.

Multiplayer: Awsome! You can play as Axis or Allies and there are plenty of maps. plus you can choose your player model.

Overal: Well there are a few things I dont like, I think all-in-all it's worth it's mone and will provide fun for sometime!

4-0 out of 5 stars Demanding but immersive
First off, let me just start by saying that MOH is the most well-written FPS out there. The story line continues from mission to mission and doesn't resort to the shambling zombies and cyborg enemies that another "WWII-era" FPS does (initials RTCW?).While I will admit that the Normandy Beach mission does seem lifted right out of Saving Private Ryan, it does lead on to some very interesting hedgerow missions.

That said, there are some problems that I'd like to discuss in this review. For starters, there's game performance.I own a PowerMac G4 867DP (MDD) with a GeForce MX440 32MB card and 1GB RAM.This was a heavy-duty machine when MOH came out.And I get frame rate drops all the time, even with resolution at medium, detail at medium, and resolution at only 1024x768 (sub 30fps numbers). This is compared with >45 fps with RTCW on max settings at 1024x768 res (Both are based on the Quake3 engine BTW).The game almost drops to 1fps briefly when you hit a checkpoint.I have upgraded to the latest version which is supposed to include routines that allow for both of my processors to be utilized, but this hasn't made much impact on the gameplay.

Second off, the graphics at the resolution I've had to play (as mentioned above) aren't as impressive as the box art, and the colors are not as deep. The texture mapping is poor, and granted this is an effect of both the lower memory of my Apple GeForce card and my settings, it is kind of disappointing.

Third, and final, the game can be astonishingly hard (I had to replay the Normandy Beach mission 8-9 times before I got past the beachhead into the bunker) even on the easy setting. It is no walk in the park like RTCW.

Getting back to some pros and leaving the cons aside, the missions are engrossing. The mission where you sabotage a U-boat by infiltrating the base as a Nazi officer and then getting discovered when you plant the first explosive is great -- and I had almost sadistic fun intentionally blowing my cover and anhillating the whole base with an MP40.The sniper alley mission in Normandy is impressively difficult but very satisfying to beat (hint: you don't have to kill EVERY Nazi but it is fun to do so!).

The sound effects are excellent too.The "ping!" of an M1 clip running out, the "rat-tat-tat" of the Thompson, and the "crack!" of a KAR-98 sniper rifle are more realistic than the sounds from RTCW.

The weapons selections are a history buff's fantasy. You get to use the following:
US Army: M1911A1 .45 cal pistol, M1 Garand rifle, Browning Automatic Rifle, Springfield Sniper rifle, Winchester Pump 12 Ga. shotgun, Thompson .45 cal SMG, US "Bazooka" antitank rocket, and Browning .50 cal machine gun.
Axis: Luger 9mm pistol, MP40 SMG, KAR98 sniper rifle, Panzerfaust antitank rocket, STG44 "Sturmgewehr" automatic rifle (the first modern assault rifle), MG44 machine gun
You also get to fool with explosives of every sort.

The detail to the levels is amazing, and realistic as well.'88' antiaircraft guns can block your path and require an airstrike you can call in.Grenades bounce like the real thing (and do require some serious practice to get the hang of).P-51 Mustangs fly overhead in the Normandy missions.German soldiers speak German (not accented English). There are no "secret labs."

This is a very satisfying game with serious attention paid to realism and detail which immerse you in the environment, but it is very demanding on even the upper echelon of G4 processors.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST GAME IN THE WORLD!!! NEEDS MORE STARS!!!!
Medal Of Honor Allied Assault is the greatest game out there it's graphics are just spectacular! Don't listen to the people who say it's a bad game. Medal Of Honor Allied Assault is historically accurate and the enemy A.I. is excellent plus the D-day levels are the best I have ever played and I've been playing for 12 years. Super fun - I took my powerbook over to a buddies - hooked up an ethernet cable and bam - we were having a blast.Must admit the little lady was a little bent because I lost all sense of time and was a bit late for dinner.I will say it was worth it - great maps - great connection - and Blizzard just makes the best games ever - they are all about making games fun.
          I can't recomend them enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good game, great fun
this game is really fun, especially the online action. join TONS of people on Battle.net and play online for hours, its addicting. the sigle player also kicks arse if i may say so. i bought this game when it first came out for 50 bucks and i still play it. its awesome. im pretty sure in a general sense that if you like ANY video games you will love this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blizzard seems to be the only one who can make a good RTS
Represented in this years 2004 WCG (world cyber games). Games voted by the players of the world. The WCG is the equivalent of the Olympic games for video games. Nations and countries from around the world play in this event. This year, It was held in San Francisco(where I attended). Some of the biggest crowd turnouts, Aside from the usual Gamer favorite StarCraft, was WarCraft 3. Loud chants and even national pride anthems were song during the mathches. This game stands up to the test of professionals, tested for it's speed and compatibility. It is among the best in a category dominated by the computer media: RTS. As a long time RTS player I would rank this only second to StarCraft. And for those gamers not really into RTS, the game provides outlets for the online experience. Custom games where gamers like you, make the maps and the rules. Games like Sheep tag, Where you and how ever many other players build obstacles (farms in this case) to surround themselves with, so that online players, playing as Wolves, don't attack and kill you. The point of the game for the Sheeps side is to survive for twenty minutes. On the other side, the wolves, it is to kill every online sheep. The games are endless and thus are the opportunities for fun. I'm currently addicted to custom games. I can't find myself to do anything else. Join the crave.. The community of WarCraft is welcoming to new players.
The RTS is rather different than StarCraft, who requires blinding speed for not only Macro but also Micro. The average Pro gamer speed for StarCraft is around 200 apm. In WarCraft it's around 50. But that means that WC3 is only differrent. Giving gamers who couldn't compete with the engine of SC a wonderfully new outlet to compete. WC3 focuses more on Hero's. In the WCG those who lost their hero's lost the game. The maximum number of troops is low, around 100. But those numbers are deceiving to the critics out there. If you where given the opportunity of more troops, it would only lead to the emulation of SC. Blizzard wanted a new RTS. One with its own identity. They knew they couldn't cater to the needs of Pro SC gamers. The expectations were too high. So they worked for years, and in the end they gave us a graphicaly superb beast filled with Commanding hero's and spell casters who demand the game's victory or loss.-jeff ... Read more

You are B.J. Blazkowicz, a highly decorated Army Ranger recruited into the Office of Secret Actions (OSA) tasked with escaping and then returning to Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to thwart Heinrich Himmler's occult and genetic experiments. Himmler believes himself to be a reincarnation of a 10th-century dark prince, Henry the Fowler, also known as Heinrich. Through genetic engineering and the harnessing of occult powers, Himmler hopes to raise an unstoppable army to level the Allies once and for all.

You must first escape from imprisonment in the castle to report the strange creatures and happenings in and around Wolfenstein to the OSA. Your mission takes a drastic turn as you learn the depth of Himmler's plans and what you must do to defeat the evil he has unleashed. Your surroundings will be dangerous and hostile. The OSA is currently tracking activities believed to be associated with Himmler in locations throughout Germany, including villages overrun by the occult, hidden crypts, forests, air bases, secret weapons facilities, and genetic labs.

Enter a highly immersive story line driven by realistic, mission-based action gameplay, believable AI, and the Quake III engine. Arm yourself with an arsenal of weapons, including Luger 9mm, Mauser 7.92mm, MP-40, SP-5 sniper, venom guns, grenades, rocket launchers, and flamethrowers. The game also features a multiplayer mode pitting players in a team-based Axis versus Allies contest for frontline domination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great FPS Low Firepower
This is a great first person shooter for OS X if you own a G4 iMac or other lower end G4 machine.Haven't tried it on anything lower than my G4 667 powerbook, but the Powerbook seemed to have all the Processing power this game needs. This is a really good translation of the old third person game Castle Wolfenstein, and a much improved rendition over the original Wolfenstein 3D.

All in all, great bad guys, great single player and great network play without having to have the latest/greatest Mac to push it.Tons of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
If you don't already own this game, you should. This is definately a classic game. The anticipation was so high for this game when it first released [because it was the follow up to one of THE best shooters ever].The game followed through well...excellent graphics, great AI for single player, online play is excellent. There are many weapons, maps, etc.Online play is more than just runnin around and shooting...instead you have objectives and people on your team have jobs to complete such as Medics, Soldier, and Engineer. As I said before, this game is a CLASSIC...a MUST OWN!I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars because its getting to be an old game but its still great...

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning graphics, smart AI, but not much innovative play
Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer is sucked into a higher (three-dimensional) reality and has his mind blown for a little while? If you still remember the old Wolfenstein 3D, that may very well be how you're going to feel once you fire up Return to Castle Wolfenstein (aka RTCW--I'm lazy). The graphics are stunning, including highly realistic textures, fog, lighting effects, and of course nearly photorealistic opponents. Environmental sound effects and wonderful--often hilarious--voice acting round off the illusion. All cut scenes are produced using the in-game engine, and I'd say the only way to make them look better would have been to use live actors. Facial animations are well executed, and once you get a good look at the femme fatale Elite guards, you will realize how well your enemies are built ... er, designed. Your Teutonic opposition largely speaks English with a strong accent (and unless you know German, you'll probably be thankful for this), but they do throw in the occasional catchy "Schweinhund!" and "Mein Gott!" as you tangle with them.

The AI is pretty darn smart--these certainly aren't your Daddy's Nazis anymore. Your adversaries will dodge bullets (some are very athletic at that), seek cover, and call for reinforcements or retreat if the going gets rough. Don't expect the old grenade-around-the-door-post trick to work, either. Instead of waiting until it goes off in their faces, the hostiles will back off if they can, or even kick it right back at ya. What a waste.

As far as your arsenal (that Morrissey sure is a punster, ain't he?) is concerned, you'll be wielding an array of conventional as well as experimental weaponry, all of which are exquisitely animated and sound very rich and satisfying. Since the story takes place during WW II, none of your shooters are too kooky or exotic. Instead, great care has been taken to deliver the most realistic implementation of a fairly conventional weapon, the flamethrower. The sadist in you will appreciate the sight of your howling victims vainly trying to beat out their burning uniforms (this never works, by the way). Which reminds me: you don't have to be Joseph Liebermann to come to the conclusion that this game does perhaps not belong into the hands of little game enthusiasts. RTCW is surprisingly sparing in the display of blood and gore, but the death animations are still pretty gruesome. What is missing in spraying guts is made up for by anguished screams and wails.

Visually, RTCW is breathtaking, IF you've got a beefy Mac. I played this game on a Dual 1 GHzMirror Drive G4 with 512 MB RAM and 64 MB VRAM (ATI), and have seen the occasional frame rate hiccup with all graphics and sounds settings cranked up. There's no shame in that--it's safe to say that RTCW is among the most demanding titles out there right now. If you want to run this on an older or less powerful machine, some tweaking (most likely sacrificing some of the eye candy for performance) is going to be required.

Game play in the single-player campaign is, as a matter of fact, surprisingly easy even at the "I'm Death Incarnate" setting. If you're willing to accept a health drop to 25 % or so as satisfyingly realistic, there are few situations that you won't be able to resolve with brute force. It's a different story in some of the stealth-based scenarios, where any detection by enemy forces means the mission's scrubbed. That said, the level design is superb throughout except maybe for the predictable and oddly Super Mario-esque final boss encounter.

The problem is that there's really not much to come back for in the single-player game. Once you've played through it, the surprise factor (which plunks you in some downright scary situations at times) is gone and that's pretty much it. However, if you're a multi-player enthusiast, RTCW is well worth your money.

Unlike with many games these days, the multi-player component of RTCW is not an afterthought to the single-player game, tacked on with maybe a handful of extra maps, but a separate, dedicated application which features a fundamentally different mode of play. You get to either head into battle as a soldier with your favorite firearm, wield and defuse powerful explosives as an engineer, coordinate the attack and call in supportive (and devastating) air strikes, or do the good thing and keep your buddies alive and in the action as a medic (helping them forego the lengthy re-spawn cooldown). I haven't played too many online games of RTCW, so my observations here may not be all that representative, but I can tell you, I didn't see too many medics out there ... engineers are indispensable on some maps because you can't get at the enemy without blasting through some door or wall, but other than that, it seemed to me that everybody wants to be a gun-toting soldier, respawning wait time be damned. So in many online games, the nicely thought-out specialization system does not come to bear, but if you have some good people to play with who are willing to take on the different available roles, it should make for a very interesting play style.

In summary: if you're passionate about multi-player games, RTCW will most likely keep you very happy for a long time. On the other hand, if you don't care much for the multi-player aspect and don't have money to burn, you may want to pass on this one. It looks fantastic, but in terms of game play, there's nothing revolutionary in the single-player campaign. You'll basically be throwing your money at (admittedly serious) eye candy. Maybe you won't mind. Otherwise, save up for Unreal II. ... Read more

          Editorial Review

Max Payne, the New York police detective, has had a bad time of itrecently, and it's time for payback. Three years ago, junkies high on amysterious new narcotic called Valkyr slaughtered his wife and child. Thetragedy drives him on a prolonged path of vengeance. It turns him from adetective looking for easy work to a deep undercover vice cop infiltrating theMob to a hardened vigilante. Max Payne is a film-noir-inspired gameabout revenge that is unflinching in every way possible. It's dark and moody, extremely twisted, and turns PC action gaming on its ear by featuringstate-of-the-art graphics, audio, and cinematic action.

Aside from its inspired use of photorealistic graphics and unique graphic novel(comic book) panels to further the plot, the game also features something calledBullet Time: a slow-motion toggle, usable for a limited time, that re-createsthe awe-inspiring diving maneuvers made popular by director John Woo and, ofcourse, The Matrix. At the touch of a button, Max can go into slow motionand leap forwards or back, and side to side, while pumping generous amounts oflead into his enemy's bodies. This toggle isn't just eye candy, it's a strategicdevice that evens the sometimes staggering odds the game throws at you. Theaction is made even more visceral by the interactive environments (glassshatters, plaster puffs into dust, and wood splinters) and generous amounts ofblood.

The game carries a Mature label, and this should be taken very seriously. Thegame doesn't pull a single punch, whether in flashbacks showing Max's reactionto his gunned-down spouse, or even, somewhat tastelessly, flashbacks thatinclude his slain infant daughter. And he mows down a virtual army of hackneyedJoe Pesci-style Italian mobsters or ski-mask-wearing terrorists with extremeprejudice. The plot is predictable, the script is humorously bad (intentionallyso?), but the action will definitely make a shooter fan drool. Max Payneis the übershooter, and as such, it should be kept out of the hands ofkids. But mature action fans will love it. --Andrew S. Bub

          Pros:

          • Fantastic graphics and unparalleled action
          • The slow-motion Bullet Time is The Matrix or Hard Boiled cometo life
          Cons:
          • It's a little on the short side
          • The script is, at times, hilariously bad

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun but predictable
This game is very fun, gameplay is relatively unique due to the needed use of Bullet Time where time slows down for a few seconds. Graphics are great on a stock 20 inch Imac ans sound is also great. The biggest flaw in the game is that there is no puzzle element during the actual game. There is only one open door where there is a posability to go else where. So wherever a door can be opend is the way to go. Also enemies become very predictable after the majority of the game which makes replays pointless. There are however, two blood trail mazes which are extremely annoying and are a complete waste of the time it takes to get a walkthrough and pass them.
Overall this game is very fun the first time around but that's all there is to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Max Brings The Payne
Max Payne is one amazing game. You play as Max Payne, a everyday person who walks home one day to find his wife murdered...because of this he goes undercover and thats where the story begins...the story is filled with action and adventure and it keeps rolling out, never getting "slow".The graphics are great and "bullet time", a matrix type gameplay, is very cool...everything slows down and you can dodge bullets easier.Although there is no online option, Max Payne still has a very good story line and is probably one of the most popular shooters. The best part about the game is where it takes place...takes place in New York City where there are tons of cops and gang members to kill.

Gameplay: Lots of action MATRIX style! What more can you ask for in a FPS??

Graphics: Game may be a little old but the graphics are still terrific...

Story: Probably one of the best stories for a FPS.Contains a real ganster story instead of those other games that try to contain a "street" story and takes place in ohio with no cops to kill.

Overall: Max Payne is one must buy title!I haven't played anything this good in a long time... If you like BLOOD, GUNS, or ACTION, this one is a MUST-BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars a shooter (third person) par excellence
normally, shooters dont do much for me unless combined with some other quality such as stealth, role playing, or puzzles, specifically nolf, deus ex, and tomb raiders. i dont have the reflexes or hand eye coordination of a teenager, and i cant do unreal tournament etc, even the training. max pain, though is a real winner with excellent visuals and a convincing, though improbable story (one man wipes out the entire illegal drug industry, from street junkies all the way to the head of the corporation that makes the drugs) of revenge for the murder of his family. the script is hilariously overwritten and BAAAD, obviously a parody on tv and movies. the story and exposition are presented in comic book form. as with most pure shooters, there are no puzzles and very few secrets.

gameplay. max's moves are limited to kicking open doors. he cant climb ladders, move boxes, etc. however, there is bullet time, a great slow motion effect, which can allow him to get the bad guys more easily. on "fugitive", the default and easiest level of difficulty, this was pretty useless, allowing me to watch max's demise in gory detail, but on "hard boiled", the next level up, it is more useful, though not frequently. since its hard to take on 3-4 thugs at once and live, my favorite and effective technique was to run and wait around corners and blast the bad guys when they followed. seldom does one have to attack directly. "safe spots" are non existant, because ai is as good as they come; you cant hide; theyll get you. all the weapons are useful at one point or another, my favorites being the shotgun in the early phases and the colt automatic rifle in the later ones. this is because there was tons of ammo for each. there are also tons of medkits, referred to as payne killers. there are a couple of boring surrealistic mazes ..., but these do not detract from the overall game.

visually striking, conveying all the seedy side of new york. it surprises me to see that most of the names in the credits look like Finnish. max tends to run duck footed, and, as typical of third person games, he gets in his own view, especially when crouched. this does not hamper the action much, though, which is so intense that you really dont notice this is a short game, at least not until the second time through. many windows users have complained of poor running, even with their "high end" machines. this ran perfectly at 1024x768 on my slow emac.

in summary, this is a classic, even for those who dont like shooters. buy it now, and in great quantities so mac users will continue to get great games. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quake 3 is still the best!
Quake 3's DeathMatch and CTF cannot be compared. It's got the best graphics and physics of any FPS - much better than recent games like UT2K3 and BF:1942. If you want extremely intense action with superb physics and perfectly balanced weapons, Quake 3 is for you. It has tons of mods, tons of servers, and a huge community. It's easily the best first person shooter in the history of gaming and still remains the king.

Read the FiringSquad review - which covers the game best - in summary:

"So what does Quake 3 give you? It's quite simple: the utter refinement of deathmatch, and the ultimate multiplayer shooter experience - nothing more, nothing less. " -- Dennis "Thresh" Fong

so yeah, some of my friends were talking about how fantastic this game is, so I got it. apparently my friends are not very smart or they are pathalogical liars. basically, my main beef with the game is, if you're god -- why all the rules and restrictions? people tell YOU what to do, not the other way around. you have a little god and a little devil guy telling you what to do all the time and you have to feed and maintain what amounts to a really stupid pet. your villagers have no idea how to build anything, you have to do all of that yourself. it's basically just a strategy game where you have to defeat rival "gods" and listen to 2 stupid cartoon characters tell you what to do all the time. ... In the tradition of the multi-award-winning Star Wars: Jedi Knight, Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2, Jedi Outcast features rebel agent Kyle Katarn in exhilarating first-person action. Several years have passed since Kyle avenged his father's death and saved the Valley of the Jedi from Jerec and his band of Dark Jedi. Allowing his Force powers to languish for fear of falling to the dark side, Kyle entrusted his lightsaber to Luke Skywalker, vowing never to use it again. But when a new and menacing threat to the galaxy emerges, Kyle knows he must reclaim his past in order to save his future.

LucasArts is developing Jedi Outcast in partnership with Activision's critically acclaimed Raven Software. Players assume the role of Kyle as they employ a unique mix of weapons, Force powers, and the lightsaber in both single- and multiplayer modes. Jedi Outcast features expanded and enhanced use of the lightsaber, with new attack and defense moves. Tap into the powers of the Force, including jump, push, Jedi mind tricks, and more. Employ combat or stealth, depending on the situation. When a fight is necessary, be at the ready with an arsenal of weapons: stun baton, Bryar blast pistol, and blaster rifle to name but a few.

Explore breathtaking Star Wars locales such as Cloud City, the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, Nar Shaddaa, the smugglers' moon--plus some never-before-seen locations. Multiplayer options include deathmatch, saber-only deathmatch, and team capture the flag. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac users can be Jedi!
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is one of the first games I bought for my Mac.Gameplay is challenging and fun!The single player storyline is entertaining and pulls you into the game and keeps you there. After a slow start with no Force Powers or light saber, you really will begin to feel like a Jedi Knight.Kyle Katarn's character is one of the best characters I've seen in any game, and could easily be a film character in a Star Wars movie. Some of the most memorable levels for me are fighting as a Jedi alongside Jedi Master Luke Skywalker against a half dozen or so Reborn Dark Jedi, fighting criminals in Nar Shadaa where you really must make use of your arsenal of cool weapons, and the two key battles against Tavion and Desann.I have other, newer games, but Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is the game I keep coming back to play.

The multiplayer matches are fairly standard Quake 3 Arena fare, with one exception, the one-on-one Lightsaber Duel. You may think you're a Jedi Knight after dispatching hundereds of storm troopers and Dark Jedi in the single player game, but the real creative battles happen in Lightsaber Duels against real people online.Just please remember to fight with honor and bow before combat.

Jedi Outcast has reasonable system requirements will play well on any modern G4 or G5 Mac.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jedi Academy
As other people have said, the plot for one-player mode is very...Well, almsot pathetic. It left me confused, it didn't explain alot. But the game is still enjoyable, the graphics are OK.

In Multi-Player, you can fight other players. You can choose what you want you charecter to look like and change it as much as you want and pick your light saber. My only complaint about Multi-player mode is everyone there is rude. Well, almost everyone. There are certain clubs and "cults" where they go around calling non-members of their club/cult "Lamers".

Overall, it's a pretty good game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lightsabers, now that's different!
I am by no means a hardcore gamer, but for any fan of shooters, this is a great one, and it gives you a chance to get away from just shooting a bunch of goons (in this case, stormtroopers).Instead you can run around with a lightsaber and hack everything up ( I did this rather gleefully). For a game as old as this one is, it looks good, I'm not sure how it compares to a game using an unmodified Quake III engine but it looks almost as good as Star Trek: Elite Force 2, which is undoubtedly the best Quake game out there. ... The idea behind The Sims is this: the ultimate goal of life is to achieve happiness, and the way to achieve happiness is to satisfy your Sims' needs. That's right, The Sims allows you to create, direct, and manage the lives of SimCity's residents. Each need (Hunger, Comfort, Hygiene, Bladder, Energy, Fun, Social, and Room) can be met by interaction with other Sims or objects: throw a party with the help of a rockin' stereo system, and watch your Sims' Social and Fun ratings improve. Have one of your Sims whip up some food from the refrigerator, and you'll satisfy the Hunger needs of your guests. Or have your Sim engage another Sim in a game of chess: not only will their Fun and Social moods improve, both Sims will gain some points in their Logic skill rating--which might help on the job.

Mismanage your new, simulated family, and you'll be faced with the worst of MTV's The Real World--with a touch of teenage angst drama thrown in for good measure: jealousies will ignite, fights will break out, jobs will be lost, and the house will fall apart. Bringing about such a calamity is almost as much fun as guiding these Sims to material paradise, and takes considerably less time.

A good general rule is that the more expensive the object, the better its ability to satisfy Sim needs. One gameplay goal is to improve your Sim so he or she can climb the career ladder, which nets him or her more money, which allows the purchase of higher quality stuff, which lets you improve your Sim even more. Eventually, your Sim will have a mate, kids, and a mansion with an indoor pool.

Before you decide how to fix your Sims' health and happiness, you need to craft each of your simulated people: pick a name and a gender, decide on personality/astrological sign, and then choose a look from a variety of heads, bodies, and skin tones. After the creation, the next step is to find a place to live. Again, the player can choose from among the empty houses in the neighborhood or decide to buy some land and design a dream house. Building houses is a blast, and the easy-to-use house design interface could almost be its own game: players design the floor plan, put up walls, pick carpet, wallpaper, and siding, and fill the house with furniture, decorations, fixtures, and appliances. You're limited only by your imagination--and your Sims' pocketbook. But the choices you make in designing and decorating your Sims' house are vital.

Triumph or tragedy, each significant event in a Sim's life is captured in a snapshot and saved in a photo album for later viewing. Players can also take photos any time they wish. The photo album feature is cool by itself, but the best part is that you can upload the album to www.thesims.com and share your Sims' sagas with the world. Entire families can also be uploaded and downloaded, as can houses. Want to re-create and manage your own version of Friends? Download the free face and body editor and make Sim clones of Ross, Rachel, and the rest. Want to go really crazy and perfectly re-create the set? Snag the free wall and floor texture editor. With The Sims, you can create whatever--and whomever--you desire.

Toying with the lives, successes, and emotional states of dozens of little Sims is undeniably fun. In the same way that SimCity players develop a condescending attitude toward real-world city planners, The Sims players will begin to see life as a series of needs-satisfying challenges; the game gets in your head. But that's OK: limitless gameplay, endless variety, cool Internet features, and the ability to play matchmaker/landlord/counselor/God makes The Sims a great way to increase your own Fun score. --Mike Fehlauer

            • Sims are smart--it's sometimes best to just let them act on their own

The Sims is for people who like to goof around, create and have fun! You can make people, choose the color of their skin, their age, their personality, male or female, clothing etc... It's a must have! You build or buy a house, and create their environments and furniture and lots of stuff. There's a cheat code to get you tons of money, but i can't tell you! Ha! Anyway, the sims has it's own type of addictive game playing, and everyone will love this! But i'm saying about 10 and up, although it depends how you canhandle some...things. Even though the sims is rated T for teen, there's nothing wrong with it, and you'll love it!!!!! ... Read more
