Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time may be the greatest single-player video game ever created in any genre. It's that good. Those new to Nintendo's enormously popular Zelda series will be glad to know this game stands completely on its own. Our hero, Link, starts the game as a young boy living in a magical forest village populated by elf-like children. But there is evil lurking in the world. Strange monsters are appearing, and the land is changing. It's up to Link to discover why, defeat the monsters, and stop the evil at its source. The game world's ever-changing environment looks like a fairy tale come to life. Majestic waterfalls, towering castles, and magical forests are a feast for the eyes and ears. Rivers flow, rain falls, the sun and moon rise and set. There's even an erupting volcano! Exploring this world is half the fun of the game. Along the way, you learn musical tunes that you can play on the flute-like Ocarina, a magical device that helps you teleport, alter the weather, even control time itself. Character interaction is important to gather clues. The fairy princesses, singing frogs, and dragons you'll meet can be cute, humorous, or somewhat terrifying. Sprinkled liberally throughout the game are hundreds of secret treasures and enjoyable minigames (one of which, the fishing game, would almost be worth buying by itself). Game controls are easy to learn. There's even an elaborate fight training course built right into the game. Controlling the hero quickly becomes instinctive, and you can concentrate on saving the world. To win the game, you'll have to use not only Link's sword, but your mind as well. This game's challenging and inventive puzzles really make you think. In fact, to keep from getting stuck, it's worth spending a few bucks on an official player's guide. With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Nintendo has come up with an all-consuming adventure title that will provide days of engrossing gameplay. --Eric Fredrickson Pros:

Starsiege Tribes (Jewel Case) Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Revolutionizing the online first-person shooter genre with a seamless indoor/outdoor game engine, Starsiege Tribes backs up its snazzy technology with sophisticated online-only gameplay. Tribes is the perfect game for action fans looking for something more cerebral than Quake but less complicated than Rogue Spear. Players are able to customize their high-tech warrior to suit individual play styles: snipers will go with light armor, extra battery pack, and a laser rifle; fans of less-subtle tactics will grab heavy armor, a mortar, plasma gun, and shield pack to create a walking tank. This level of customization adds an unusual amount of depth for a game in the first-person shooter genre, and it's fun to mix up gear choices in order to react to battlefield conditions. And oh, what a beautiful battlefield it is. Players begin the game within their home base, but once free of those crowded halls, a limitless vista greets the eyes. Rolling hills, snow-covered peaks, and eerie moonscapes provide a stunning backdrop to the action as players zoom around with jetpacks. Outposts, towers, and weapon emplacements provide strategic objectives and sniping platforms; hovercraft and personnel carriers allow quick transport and airborne assaults. Blasting your way across the world of Tribes is fun, but it's not the only gameplay option. Less action-oriented gamers can assume the role of Commander and issue orders to teammates. The Commander is especially useful during matches that require intricate teamwork, such as capture the flag, capture and hold, and defend and destroy. --Mike Fehlauer Pros:

Final Fantasy VII Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon Pros:

Final Fantasy III Average Customer Review: Video Game US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (36)
Onward to the review.... STORY 10/10 I have never given a game a 10 out of 10, but this game deserves it. this game circles around the magic Espers, creatures that contain large amounts of magic and power. An evil being named Kefka seeks after these espers, and drains power out of them until they are obselete. a small rebel resistence force battles against him in a long battle which later on becomes a battle for the human race's survival CHARACTERS 8/10 The characters were not that bad, but there were some that were terrible. that is okay, as you rarely ever have to play with them. i am judging the characters by not only their usefulness in battle, but their personality also TERRA BRANFORD-7.5/10- an interesting character who sulks a bit much, but DEFINATELY not as annoying as selphie from FF8. an early magic user, and can transform into an esper LOCKE COLE-9/10- a sly theif who is dedicated to his promises. can steal items from enemies during battles EDGAR RONI FIGARO-9/10- a ruler of figaro castle(...). uses useful tools in battles SABIN RENE FIGARO-10/10- super cool, super funny bodybuilder, who uses strong "Blitz" attacks during battles SHADOW-8/10- your uncommon loner ninja with quite a past who will "slit his momma's throat for a nickel". he can throw swords and items during battle. CELES CHERE-9.5/10- she is pretty cool, and really useful during battle, as she can absorb magic CYAN GARAMONDE-8/10- a persistant devious character. during battle, he can use certain sword techniques, some proving rather powerful GAU-4/10- a useless character who acts like my 7 year old brother. he can permanently copy and use enemy moves (once again like my brother :) SETZER GABBIANI-9/10- a sly gambler who has a ratherinteresting personality. he can perform a "slot" move during battle STAGO MAGUS-3/10- another worthless character who is extremely weak even in his "lores" which he can use in battle RELM ARROWNY-5/10- an annoying little girl who wants her way with everything. can "sketch" and "control" enemies in battle GOGO-7/10- This person has no personality and says nothing during the entire game. He copies off of ANYONE during battle MOG-6/10- interesting character, but not annoying like the moogles in FFIX. can "dance" during battle UMARO-8/10- one word monster who is quite strong, and good for battle. He has no special move for battle GAMEPLAY 10/10 this is where the game gets its highest scores. The non-stop fun of playing continues on from beginning to end (except for the squid ultros, i thought that was tedious). your party consists of four characters, each being different in battle, and you battle enemies that are not insanely hard, but not easy, and still producing fun to the gamer. the summons, while not proving that much use at all, dont take the usual full minute watching stupid animations such as the later final fantasys. GRAPHICS 9/10 for a super nintendo these graphics are superior. compared to final fantasy 2 these graphics are superior. not much else is to be said here MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS 10/10 I am in love with the battle theme song for this game. not only is it extremely catchy, but it is very memorable. the boss music isnt that great, but dont get me wrong, its memorable. In my opinion however, i think that squaresoft should have taken the boss theme music from final fantasy 2 and beefed it up, as final fantasy 2 has the BEST boss theme music. For sounds, they are phenominal. they have different types of sounds for different swords, whips, ninja stars, throwing darts, and more. when you block an attack with your sword, it really sounds like two swords are being crossed. when you block with a shield, it really doesnt sound like it, but it makes a nice noise nonetheless. REPLAY VALUE 10/10 I have had this game since i was 6, and I have beaten this game time and time again and yet i still want to play it. i have never played final fantasy anthology, but it sounds real nice so im gonna get it. my thoughts tell me that the super nintendo version is the way to go however A little emotional something as i leave.... the first time i ever beat this game, which was a long long time ago, i encountered a feeling that made me feel rather sad but blissful, sad because there is no more to play of this game, blissful because the storyline and ending gave me the feel of true fantasy. after beating this game time and time again, i bought final fantasy 2. when i beat it, i did not get that same feeling even though it was a great game. after that i bought final fantasy 7, and i barely got any feeling at all. after purchasing and beating final fantasy 8, i felt extremely happy to beat and be rid of that crappy game. now i am working on 9, hoping to beat it and get that same feeling again, which i probably will not get, because final fantasy 3 is a ONE OF A KIND game ... Final Fantasy VIII Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (22 September, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene. The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience. The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president. You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking Pros:

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (03 July, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Just when it seems 3-D fighting games have permanently made 2-D fightinggames obsolete, something like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 comes along and provesjust how deep and fun 2-D fighters can be. It's better than its predecessor inevery way, and arguably the best 2-D fighting game to grace the Dreamcast. The amount of playable characters is enough to put any fighting fan's salivaryglands in overdrive. Beginning with favorites such as Spider Man, Wolverine,Ryu, and Chun Li, players can eventually unlock 56 characters. We had our handsfull just mastering a few of these fighters, and getting familiar with all 56would take months of intense practice. There are almost too many moves, alldepicted with superb animation and augmented by several tag-team combos. Whenthe match begins, you can pick three characters. Once things heat up, you cancall in your pals to unleash a massive move on your opponent. This addsimmensely to the game's depth, and button mashers will be in for a shock whenthey find that their mistimed tag-team moves backfire. Visually, this game is intense. The large characters are slightly jagged aroundthe edges, but that's more than compensated for by the massive amount ofanimation frames, colorful special effects, and stunning 3-D backgrounds thatare loaded with detail. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 also delivers a sonicperformance that is nearly arcade-perfect. This is a must-buy for any fightingfan, especially those who have a couple of buddies to bash. Just be prepared toput in a lot of time in practice mode if you want to get good. --T. ByrlBaker Pros:
