Editorial Review

Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience.

The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon

5-0 out of 5 stars Playstation Final Fantasy Debut Shines on All Levels
The first Final Fantasy on a system is always the best, as it seems to bring out the best in Square's developers. Final Fantasy VII is no different, with the perfect amount of Playstation flair to compliment, not overtake the strong story and game system that are the series' hallmarks.

While old-school gamers may prefer pre-defined roles for each character, the Materia system is still meritorious on its own, allowing uncomplicated customization of characters and adding great depth to gameplay. Character development proceeds well, with nearly every battle in the game having purpose (unlike some RPGs where hours are spent "leveling up" to get characters past an obstacle), and the in-game pointers help clarify locations whenever the lush graphics are unclear. The soundtrack is otherworldly, with several haunting, beautiful songs that are simply unforgettable.

But Final Fantasy's core has always been its great storylines, and this installment has one of the best. Characters develop and mature realistically, and you get to know each one intimately, almost feeling kinship with some of them. The plot is suitably but not comically epic, and the main struggle plays out better than most Hollywood movies. Nearly everyone will laugh and cry at various parts of the game, a feat precious few video games have ever accomplished. From a storyteller's perspective the shocking twist at the game's midpoint is perhaps too easy a way to draw emotion from the player, but there is no denying its effectiveness, as it is one of the most memorable scenes in video game history.

Square has released many RPGs on Playstation, some of them terrific on their own, but none have topped their first, a must-purchase for all Playstation owners. If you like incredible stories but don't own a Playstation, it's worth buying one just for Final Fantasy VII.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Game
Final Fantasy VII was the first game that got me hooked on Final Fantasy...or Playstation in general. It's absolutely perfect. The graphics are great, the storyline is really beautiful and painfully intriguing (it's very easy to get hooked). However, my two absolute favorite parts of this game are the music and the characters. I can't play a game if the music is bad, but the composer of all the music in this game is a genius. Each note contains all the emotion of the scene. It was half the reason that I cried pitifully...it was an emotional thing...at Aeris's death. And the characters are extremely colorful. The person playing the game can relate to each and every one of them. When Aeris dies, you can feel Cloud's pain...or you can relate to Barret's isolation in Corel, and Cid's longing to fly into space. Even the characters that walk the streets add to the game when you talk to them. Overall, if you have to have one game in the FF series, you should definitely go out of your way to get this one. This is a game that's got everything...comedy, drama, romance, action, lots and lots of imagination...AND a really good ending!

1-0 out of 5 stars Shut up!!
All of you FF fans complaining about how this game isn't up to par with other FF games, get over it!! There's no difference, all FF games suck!! Too much magic and sorcery crap to put up with. Play some real games like Mario or Halo. Don't play videogames that are like chess. Play games that let you obliterate you enemies at will with high-tech weapons and travel through 2-D worlds. I'd like to see Cloud fight against Master Chief (Halo). Master Chief would kill Cloud without effort. Halo rules FF sucks!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great RPG from the SNES days.
It's about time I found a listing for this on Amazon! I've been looking all over for this game. This is one of the best ones I played on the SNES, and I still like it today.

In terms of graphics, it's very cartoony, and the battles are done in Dragon Warrior style with some weird swirling color patterns in the background. The music in this game is pretty cool, though it gets weird at times. But, well, this game IS weird... that's the whole point of it.

The gameplay is much like the old Dragon Warrior style, and a few old features like limited inventories have come into play. I personally don't like that, but it certainly does add some challenge.

One of the best and most unique features of this game, also, is the battle system. First, there are no random battles. You must run into an enemy in order to fight it. If the enemy is stronger than or equal to you, it will come after you. If you're far stronger than they are, or you have already beaten their area, they will usually run away. Also, when you come into contact with an enemy, the beginning of the battle is determined by HOW you met them. If they caught up with you from behind, they get the first strike. If you caught them from behind, you get the first strike. And, if you met face to face, it's an equal start. One other feature of the battle system, which I truly like, is the ability to skip pointless battles. If you are far stronger than the enemy and they run into you, you will automatically win without even going into a battle screen. That is an excellent feature, and I don't know why it hasn't been implemented in other games. Final Fantasy certainly could use something like that.

This game is placed in modern times, which is another thing that makes it unique. Also, it is purposely comic, and I enjoy that a lot more than FF7's dark, gloomy overtones. I also like the interesting choice of weapons that the heroes use to fight bad guys. Baseball bats, frying pans (!), slingshots. This game is wacky, and it's not the least bit shy about that.

Unfortunately, it came out at a time when people were saying "If it didn't come from Squaresoft, it can't be any good," so as a result it was either overlooked or scorned. But, this is actually a great game. If you can get your hands on it, go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars another great RPG for the SNES
The list goes on and on. You Know what im talking about. The number of great RPGs on the Snes. Chrono trigger, final fantasy, breath of fire, Lufia, and many more included another great RPG: Earthbound. Its amazing im almost crying thinking about it. Snivel Snivel. There are no bad things about this game its chalenging yet fun i like the music it doesnt get old and its long. There is also one rare trait on this RPG:Humor. Not necessarally(Im 14 but i cant spell probaly cause i spend too much time playing my NES SNES and PS2)make u laugh until u cry but make u smirk and think. The story is also very original. Your a kid Ness or whatever u want ur name to be who lives in onnet well to not give it all away, but in the future theres a legend that 3 boys and 1 girl save the world from aliens.Ok i admit its a little weird but interesting and oringal. You are believed to be one of those boys. Anyway thats the basics of the story. Another great thing about this game is the fact that u have 4 charecters not the standered 3. I give it 10 out of 10. I and many others are dissapointed that a sequel never came out actually a prequel(well not really a prequel)was realesed on the NES in japan only under the title Mother.Sumhow it got converted into a rom and id available to play. Ive played it and its very much like Earthbound on the snes.I believe there was suposed to be an earthbound 64 but complications or sumthing and it was never released. If you have a Snes and u do do not have this game the only excuse is u havent heard of it.If u dont have a Snes then theres no excuse for u.Its a great system with great classic games.

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is sooooo Great!
I've beaten it and loved it all the way through! Its awesome, you start in a small town and you have to go through it fighting The sharks(the local gang)Stray dogs, crows that drop cookies,Ants and slugs! And all this is done with suff you can go to the local stores and get! No not potions but more like Hamburgers and BaseBall bats!

Okay there is an evil alien that takes over the world ten years in the future from the time your in,A metorite hits your town A Bee flies off of it and tells you your the chosen one and you must Go to eight sanctuary spots around the world. Then you chanel your power with the earth then beat Guigas! It's very Fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Square is Amazing
Chrono Trigger is flat out on my best list game.I actually wasn't interested in it thinking it was a stupid RPG. I was Wrong. It was the most addictive and fun thing of all time. I stayed up for hours into the night (for many nights) beating it.This game has everything,a good main charecter, crono who has wicked swords and fire magic,a robot who has super strong phsical attacks,a cave women who is very well balanced between Physical and magic attacks. You also get some other charecters like a sword weilding frog, a princess, and another girl. This game also has a good story line.Basically you accidently travel back in time and mess up the world. It's very interesting.I suggest anyone who owns a Snes buy this game.Although it is rare and hard to find(and kinda expensive)you might try finding it for the playstation.Square released Chrono Trigger and an awesome Final Fantasy game never before released in the U.S.for playstation. It was released on a two disc set and will be cheap if you can find it.Basically Im saying this game rocks and you should get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE GREATNESS
While it wasn't THE best SNES game ever (That one going to Final Fantasy 3) it came in a close second. The addition of group attacks (2 or 3 characters launching an attack at the same time) was my single favorite feature in this game. This feature was one of the best additions to Squaresofts RPG's but Chrono Trigger is the only game where it's really showcased. Well, besides that there's an excellent "Time Travel" aspect to the game which I absolutely adore, a GREAT storyline that you don't always need to follow (you can go off and do some things using the element of time travel). It's a lot of fun seeing how what you did in the past can affect the future. There are also several endings to the game depending on when you decide to beat the final boss (YOU CAN DECIDE!) But I recommend playing the whole way through the first time to take full advantage of the great storyline and detailed world. Although there aren't many characters you'll only need a few to create your dreamteam. This game will hook you and not let you go. A great buy for new or veteran RPG players. It's also becoming a collector's item so buy one and hold on to it. HAVE FUN!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best rpg ever made!

Editorial Review

Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classicChrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy namedSerge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and onein which he drowned 10 years earlier.

Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphicsand a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increaseyour power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physicalattacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attackssetting up fierce blows.

The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interestingcharacters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds toadvance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear tolook similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closerexamination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in oneworld thrives in the other.

My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexitiesof the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with earlybattles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic.--Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Lavish, vibrantly colored graphics
  • Unique battle system involving elements and casting awayrole-playing clichés like experience and magic points
Cons:
  • Easy battles due to powerful offensive and cure elements
  • For hours, players will be saying, "Get to the time travel stuff"

5-0 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE
After years of playing tired Nintendo RPG titles designed for young children, I finally tried Playstation. Among Sony's huge and truly excellent line up of games, Chrono Cross is a jewel. It has beautiful graphics (you will never believe that it is only 32 bits), great music, challenging and though provoking battles, a myriad of characters, many items to find, subquests galore, and best of all, it has an absorbing story, with twists and turns to match any sci-fi/fantasy novel. And did I mention that there are AT LEAST 12 documented endings? It is rumored that the Japanese version has a documented 13th, but apparently it is not quite the same on the American version, although there are rumors. Gameplay becomes progressively more challenging. Although anyone could muddle through the first few hours, it takes forethought, logic, and strategy to progress. This is not a game for young kids (I would say, perhaps a mature 13 year old, absolute minimum. My hubby is 29, and he can't put it down!) Not because it contains inappropriate subject matter, but because the game is designed for patience and persistence. The next move in the plot is usually hidden and requires the player to seek it out by talking to all of the Non-Playing Characters multiple times and retaining what each one says. I bought Zelda, Majora's Mask the day it came out and after only 3 hours I went back to Chrono Cross. Why? The graphics are BETTER in Chrono Cross, the story is much deeper by far, and the gameplay is more advanced. Replay value is infinite, particularly with the Game+ feature which enables the returning triumphant player to begin a new game with many advantages, like bonuses in hit points, items, weapons, and the option of accelerating game play. Cons. I love this game, but there are a few points that annoy me. The intro sequences to each battle get tedious. The "battle music" is wearing. There are times you can get stuck just because you don't know what happens next. And the most annoying, (but also the best part of the game), the decisions you make affect the rest of the game. For example, I did not "liberate" Marbule, so I did not fight the Black Dragon who lived there, so I could not steal the Black Scale from him, which meant I was at a major disadvantage when facing all of the hugely strong black-element bosses to come, and when I looked for help on walkthroughs they ALL said I needed the Black Scale to progress further. Well, I didn't really, but it made my life a lot harder!! Don't worry, I didn't give anything away. This is a great game, the best I have ever played, in any genre. It is adventure, strategy, role-playing, fighting, DVD, and novel all rolled into one. I would willingly have paid $100 had I known how good it was before I bought it, but fortunately you don't have to!! Get it now!!

4-0 out of 5 stars some tricky parts
I had some trouble with the shifting between worlds, but other than that, the game was wonderful. The graphics were excellent for a PSX game, and the storyline was detailed and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Final Fantasy VII of its time
This game redefined the term RPG. Everything from the music to the ever-winding plot was nothing short of flawless, not to mention everything else that revolutionized the genre. The new battle system was based along the lines of Final Fantasy Tactics, enabling you to avoid enemies or fight them as you see fit. You can also flee from ANYBODY, even the final boss. There can also be more characters in your roster in this one game than the last four Final Fantasies combined, about forty characters. The graphics really pushed the PS1 to its limits, with not a single edgy polygon to be found. Not to mention that the story will keep you guessing. In other words, DO NOT USE A PLAYER"S GUIDE! You will regret if you do, I promise. Anyway, one of the best elements to this game is the music. I've played a lot of games, and this is definitely in the top three. If you want to see a better review, go to Gamespot.com, and see their review. Let me put it to you this way: out of all the hundreds of video games ever reviewed on their site, only four of them attained a perfect 10. This was one of them. Get this game! You won't regret it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good game - but this isn't the system for it
Pac-Man. No one can deny that this game is one of the greatest video games of all time, perhaps due to the fact that it is so involving and addictive, yet extremely easy to learn. Needless to say the game has been ported to a plethora of home consoles. One of the first was this version for the original Game Boy. Read on for my review of the game.

THE GOOD:
-Finally, a portable version of the game!
-With the exception of the graphics, the game is an exact reproduction of the arcade original.
-The two-player mode is nice.

THE BAD:
-You have two choices of how to play the game. You can play a zoomed-in mode, where everything is more detailed but you see less of the screen, or you can play a full-screen mode like the arcade classic, but the detail is pitiful. THIS is why Pac-Man fails as a portable game.

OVERALL:
-Get a consular version of the game instead. As good an idea as making Pac-Man portable may have sounded, it's just not possible to pull it off well.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Classic
This is a great game for anyone. Ever see one of these games in an old pizza place or something like that? This cartridge lets you play it portabley. You can make the screen like the arcade style games, with the whole area shown on the screen, or you can have 1/4 of the area on the screen at once. This game is such a classic, it should keep you busy for a very long time, whether sitting on your bed or sitting in a car.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pac Man eats on
"Pac Man" was one of the first games that I got for the Game Boy. Like most Pac Man games, it's a good one. It's pretty much the classic Pac Man game with all the classic gameplay and sounds from the arcade. But it has an added feature that makes it even better. You can play it where it shows the game in a close-up view while the screen moves according to where you guide Pac Man on the screen. Or you can put it in 1/4 size mode where it shows the whole screen and makes it more like the original.

If you like Pac Man games and still have the original Game Boy, "Pac Man" would be a good game to get. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The game that started the SNES's glorious run
When the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES for short) first came out in the early 90's, it had a great lineup of launch titles to easily make it the new best seller. Super Mario World was the first, and probably the best of these launch titles for the SNES.

Just like Mario and Luigi did for the Super Mario Brothers titles on the NES, they are still collecting tons of gold coins, Bowser is still their biggest enemy, and the Princess is waiting to be rescued once again. Only this time around, their journey along the way to Bowser and the Princess will be a bit different.

There are many new experiences to be held in Super Mario World. This is the game where the Mario clan first meets and uses Yoshi, the worlds and levels are bigger than ever, and the Mario brothers even have new abilities such as new flying techniques.

Super Mario World is more like Super Mario Brothers 3 than any of the previous Mario adventures. You can play by yourself in a one-player game, or with a friend in a two-player game at any time. You can guide either Mario or Luigi through the 7 different world maps that are full of different kinds of memorable levels.

Among these levels are haunted ghost houses, underwater environments, underground stages, a secret "Star Road," various other secret stages, a castle (one in each world) that houses the world's main Koopa boss, and so much more.

For the time, Super Mario World had spectacular graphics, great sounds and music, top-notch control, and overflowing replay value and fun. It's easy for any player of any age to find out what needs to be done once they start playing this 2D action/adventure. All you really have to do is get past all the interesting enemies and get to the end of all the levels.

All in all, Super Mario World is one of the best video games ever made, and it always will be! It's the game that started the Super Nintendo on the right foot, and now, it's a major classic. I wish they still made video games like this.

If you're a fan of action/adventure games, platformers, or the classic 2D side scrollers (which I miss more than anything in today's games), Super Mario World is a definite must have!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best SNES games ever
Many of you are familiar with the first ever Mario game on Nintendo and Super Mario World on Super Nintendo. For those of you who have never played Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, you definitely should. Nintendo changed this game a lot form the previous version, but didn't ruin the amount of fun it provides.

In Yoshi's Island you are Yoshi and you go through the levels with Baby Mario sitting on your back. If you get hit by an enemy then you lose Baby Mario and he starts to cry, but you have 10 seconds to get him back. If the timer runs down to zero, he is kidnapped and you lose a life. As Yoshi you can "eat" the enemies and they become eggs which you can shoot at other enemies and at bonus clouds that hold coins, stars or flowers. Every red coin that you get that is hidden throughout each stage it worth one point to your score. Each star you collect adds one second to your timer. And each flower gives you 10 points. If you collect all 5 flowers in a stage you get an extra life, similar to collecting the Yoshi coins in the first Super Mario World. You can earn up to 100 points for each level (50 for all the flowers, 30 for all the red coins, and 20 for all the stars). If you get 100 points for each level in the game, you can unlock secret levels that are really awesome!

There are many stages in this game. In all, there are 48 levels in the whole game, only half as many as the original Super Mario World game. After you beat each stage you jump into a hoop and a light starts going around the hoop. If it lands on a flower you get to play a bonus game, if not you just advance to the next stage. It takes a while to get used to this game if you are a veteran Super Mario World player because this game is so much different than it. If you own a Super Nintendo and don't own this game yet, go to your nearest used video game store and buy it, you won't regret it. ... Read more
