Final Fantasy VII Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $17.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon Pros:

While old-school gamers may prefer pre-defined roles for each character, the Materia system is still meritorious on its own, allowing uncomplicated customization of characters and adding great depth to gameplay. Character development proceeds well, with nearly every battle in the game having purpose (unlike some RPGs where hours are spent "leveling up" to get characters past an obstacle), and the in-game pointers help clarify locations whenever the lush graphics are unclear. The soundtrack is otherworldly, with several haunting, beautiful songs that are simply unforgettable. But Final Fantasy's core has always been its great storylines, and this installment has one of the best. Characters develop and mature realistically, and you get to know each one intimately, almost feeling kinship with some of them. The plot is suitably but not comically epic, and the main struggle plays out better than most Hollywood movies. Nearly everyone will laugh and cry at various parts of the game, a feat precious few video games have ever accomplished. From a storyteller's perspective the shocking twist at the game's midpoint is perhaps too easy a way to draw emotion from the player, but there is no denying its effectiveness, as it is one of the most memorable scenes in video game history. Square has released many RPGs on Playstation, some of them terrific on their own, but none have topped their first, a must-purchase for all Playstation owners. If you like incredible stories but don't own a Playstation, it's worth buying one just for Final Fantasy VII.

In terms of graphics, it's very cartoony, and the battles are done in Dragon Warrior style with some weird swirling color patterns in the background. The music in this game is pretty cool, though it gets weird at times. But, well, this game IS weird... that's the whole point of it. The gameplay is much like the old Dragon Warrior style, and a few old features like limited inventories have come into play. I personally don't like that, but it certainly does add some challenge. One of the best and most unique features of this game, also, is the battle system. First, there are no random battles. You must run into an enemy in order to fight it. If the enemy is stronger than or equal to you, it will come after you. If you're far stronger than they are, or you have already beaten their area, they will usually run away. Also, when you come into contact with an enemy, the beginning of the battle is determined by HOW you met them. If they caught up with you from behind, they get the first strike. If you caught them from behind, you get the first strike. And, if you met face to face, it's an equal start. One other feature of the battle system, which I truly like, is the ability to skip pointless battles. If you are far stronger than the enemy and they run into you, you will automatically win without even going into a battle screen. That is an excellent feature, and I don't know why it hasn't been implemented in other games. Final Fantasy certainly could use something like that. This game is placed in modern times, which is another thing that makes it unique. Also, it is purposely comic, and I enjoy that a lot more than FF7's dark, gloomy overtones. I also like the interesting choice of weapons that the heroes use to fight bad guys. Baseball bats, frying pans (!), slingshots. This game is wacky, and it's not the least bit shy about that. Unfortunately, it came out at a time when people were saying "If it didn't come from Squaresoft, it can't be any good," so as a result it was either overlooked or scorned. But, this is actually a great game. If you can get your hands on it, go for it.
Okay there is an evil alien that takes over the world ten years in the future from the time your in,A metorite hits your town A Bee flies off of it and tells you your the chosen one and you must Go to eight sanctuary spots around the world. Then you chanel your power with the earth then beat Guigas! It's very Fun! ... Read more Asin: B000035Y63 |

Chrono Cross Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (18 August, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classicChrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy namedSerge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and onein which he drowned 10 years earlier. Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphicsand a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increaseyour power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physicalattacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attackssetting up fierce blows. The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interestingcharacters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds toadvance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear tolook similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closerexamination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in oneworld thrives in the other. My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexitiesof the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with earlybattles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic.--Robb Guido Pros:

Super Mario World Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (48)
Just like Mario and Luigi did for the Super Mario Brothers titles on the NES, they are still collecting tons of gold coins, Bowser is still their biggest enemy, and the Princess is waiting to be rescued once again. Only this time around, their journey along the way to Bowser and the Princess will be a bit different. There are many new experiences to be held in Super Mario World. This is the game where the Mario clan first meets and uses Yoshi, the worlds and levels are bigger than ever, and the Mario brothers even have new abilities such as new flying techniques. Super Mario World is more like Super Mario Brothers 3 than any of the previous Mario adventures. You can play by yourself in a one-player game, or with a friend in a two-player game at any time. You can guide either Mario or Luigi through the 7 different world maps that are full of different kinds of memorable levels. Among these levels are haunted ghost houses, underwater environments, underground stages, a secret "Star Road," various other secret stages, a castle (one in each world) that houses the world's main Koopa boss, and so much more. For the time, Super Mario World had spectacular graphics, great sounds and music, top-notch control, and overflowing replay value and fun. It's easy for any player of any age to find out what needs to be done once they start playing this 2D action/adventure. All you really have to do is get past all the interesting enemies and get to the end of all the levels. All in all, Super Mario World is one of the best video games ever made, and it always will be! It's the game that started the Super Nintendo on the right foot, and now, it's a major classic. I wish they still made video games like this. If you're a fan of action/adventure games, platformers, or the classic 2D side scrollers (which I miss more than anything in today's games), Super Mario World is a definite must have!!
By Far one of the best SNES games besides Super Metroid...If you have an SNES then get games like Well yeah thats it...Go get Super Mario Worl if you have a SNES..Its a great game Later... ... Read more Asin: B00002STXQ |

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (9)
This game is friken awesome and fun as hell. The game is not a tad bit boring and the game is quiet long, well I can't remember since I played the game about what 8 years ago and I'm trying to find a SNES system for like NOW since my SNES broke down er' just Broke awhile ago but I happend to borrow a friends SNES and this game friken rocks the house man! The game play is extreamly fun and the characters are great...ESPECCIALLY BABY MARIO! HE RULES! Over all I would give this SNES Masterpiece 10/10...Or 5/5 in amazons review... GO OUT AND BUY THIS INCREDIBLE GAME!...Besides Super Metroid.....If you can find it... Later..
alas money wasted.
In Yoshi's Island you are Yoshi and you go through the levels with Baby Mario sitting on your back. If you get hit by an enemy then you lose Baby Mario and he starts to cry, but you have 10 seconds to get him back. If the timer runs down to zero, he is kidnapped and you lose a life. As Yoshi you can "eat" the enemies and they become eggs which you can shoot at other enemies and at bonus clouds that hold coins, stars or flowers. Every red coin that you get that is hidden throughout each stage it worth one point to your score. Each star you collect adds one second to your timer. And each flower gives you 10 points. If you collect all 5 flowers in a stage you get an extra life, similar to collecting the Yoshi coins in the first Super Mario World. You can earn up to 100 points for each level (50 for all the flowers, 30 for all the red coins, and 20 for all the stars). If you get 100 points for each level in the game, you can unlock secret levels that are really awesome! There are many stages in this game. In all, there are 48 levels in the whole game, only half as many as the original Super Mario World game. After you beat each stage you jump into a hoop and a light starts going around the hoop. If it lands on a flower you get to play a bonus game, if not you just advance to the next stage. It takes a while to get used to this game if you are a veteran Super Mario World player because this game is so much different than it. If you own a Super Nintendo and don't own this game yet, go to your nearest used video game store and buy it, you won't regret it. ... Read more Asin: B00002SVFN |
