Invader ZIM - Doom Doom Doom (Vol. 1) Director: Steve Ressel Average Customer Review: DVD (11 May, 2004) list price: $24.95 -- our price: $18.71 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Comic book artist Jhonen Vasquez's outré sci-fi spoof, which ran on Nicktoons at Night from March 2001 to December 2002, remains the object of a vociferous cult following. Pressure from the fans compelled Nickelodeon to resume production of Invader Zim twice before the show was cancelled permanently. The title character is a zealous, none-too-bright agent from the Irken Empire posing a human boy. Zim imagines he's gathering vital information for the imminent conquest of Earth; the Irken leaders actually sent him here to get rid of him. With the rather spotty assistance of Gir, his robot sidekick disguised as a dog, Zim alternately sneers at humanity and gets himself into trouble. The only person who recognizes Zim as an alien is his UFO-obsessed classmate, Dib. The two-disc set is loaded with extras that will delight fans of the show, including commentaries by Vasquez and several of the story and voice artists, a second "commentary" of pigs grunting, subtitles in Irken, and the original pilot for the series. The uninitiated may find Invader Zim suggests a cross between Dexter's Laboratory and Jimmy Neutron re-imagined by Tim Burton. The bizarre designs, over-the-top vocal performances, and bodily function jokes are not for the faint-hearted, but they're not supposed to be. (Unrated, suitable for ages 10 and older: cartoon violence, gross humor) --Charles Solomon ... Read more Features Reviews (141)

Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume One Director: Dave Willis (III), Matt Maiellaro Average Customer Review: DVD (18 November, 2003) list price: $29.98 -- our price: $22.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Another cracked animated series from the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming block, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Volume One's blend of superhero action and skewed humor should provide plenty of nourishment to fans of offbeat animation. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force are a squabbling trio of fast-food items (milkshake, fries, and a ball of hamburger meat) that have joined together to fight a host of monsters, aliens, and mad scientists in their native New Jersey.Fans of traditional cartoons may find the surreal plotlines and low-fi animation unmanageable, but viewers who enjoy other Adult Swim programming like Space Ghost Coast to Coast (series creators Chris Willis and Matt Maiellaro are veterans from that show) will find the Force's adventures side-splitting. The two-disc set, which features 16 episodes from the series' first two seasons, is supplemented by commentary by Willis and Maiellaro on three episodes, including an early version of "Rabbot." Disc 2 has a pair of Easter eggs that feature deleted scenes. --Paul Gaita ... Read more Features Reviews (123)

Family Guy, Vol. 1 (Seasons 1 & 2) Average Customer Review: DVD (15 April, 2003) list price: $49.98 -- our price: $37.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review To the ranks of shows too brilliant and outrageous for prime time (The Ben Stiller Show, Andy Richter Controls the Universe), add Seth McFarland's Family Guy. This animated series, which debuted after the 1999 Super Bowl, simply sparked too much controversy and offended too many sensibilities to survive (Entertainment Weekly dubbed it "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). That the Fox network also played hackysack with its schedule, ensuring viewers would not be able to find it, sealed its fate (it was cancelled in 2002). This boxed set containing all 28 episodes from the first two seasons is payback for the show's devoted cult following, who may be moved to echo the words of infant Stewie Griffin, the megalomaniacal 1-year-old bent on matricide and world domination: "Victory is mine!" The dysfunctional Griffins of Quahog, Rhode Island, invite comparisons to The Simpsons. The testicular-chinned father, Peter Griffin, is a clueless oaf in the Homer mold. "Peter, what did you promise me last night?" asks his long-suffering wife Lois in one episode. "That I wouldn't drink at the stag party," he replies. "And what did you do?" she asks. "Drank at the stag part--oh ho ho, I almost walked into that one," he cackles. Other family members include teenage daughter Meg, a desperate high school social pariah; 13-year-old son Chris, a chip off his father's blockhead; and Brian, the family's sarcastic talking dog. But this series' true inspiration is football-pated Stewie (voiced by McFarlane, who earned an Emmy), who was born to be a Bond villain once he escaped his mother's "ovarian bastille." Family Guy recklessly ventured where The Simpsons feared to tread. In one episode, Meg's one and only friend turns out to be the member of a suicidal cult. In another, Death (voiced by Norm McDonald) becomes an unwanted houseguest. Each episode plays fast and furious with surreal flashes (in one episode, Peter turns his house into a puppet) and pop-culture references and TV, movie, and commercial parodies that invite repeated viewings. Freed from its own family-hour bastille and the whims of dim network executives, Family Guy can be appreciated at last on its own profane, sacrilegious, and irreverent terms. Welcome to the DVD family, Griffins. --Donald Liebenson ... Read more Features Reviews (555)

Futurama, Vol. 1 Average Customer Review: DVD (25 March, 2003) list price: $39.98 -- our price: $31.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Set in the year 3000, Futurama is the acme of sci-fi animatedsitcom from Simpsons creator Matt Groening. While not as universallypopular as The Simpsons, Futurama is equally hip and hilarious, thanks to its zippy lateral-thinking contemporary pop cultural references, celebrity appearances (Pamela Anderson and Leonard Nimoy are among a number ofguest stars to appear as disembodied heads in jars), and Bender, a distinctlyHomer Simpson-esque robot. Part of Futurama's charm is that with decadesof sci-fi junk behind us, we've effectively been living with the distant futurefor years and can now have fun with it. Hence, the series stylishly jumblesmotifs ranging from Lost in Space-style kitsch to the grim dystopia ofBlade Runner. It also bridges the gap between the impossible dreams ofyour average science fiction fan and the slobbish reality of their comicreading, TV-watching existence. Groening himself distinguishes his two seriesthus: "The Simpsons is fictional. Futurama is real." The opening season (premiered in 1999) sees nerdy pizza delivery boy Frytransferred to the 31st century in a cryogenic mishap. There, he meets thebeautiful, one-eyed Leela (voiced by Married with Children's Katey Sagal)and the incorrigible alcoholic robot Bender. The three of them join Fry's great(great, great, etc.) nephew Professor Farnsworth and work in his intergalacticdelivery service. Hyper-real yet strangely recognizable situations ensue--Frydiscovers he's a billionaire thanks to 1,000 years' accrued interest, Leela mustfend off the attentions of Captain Kirk-like Lothario Zapp Brannigan, and Fryaccidentally drinks the ruler of a strange planet of liquid beings. --DavidStubbs ... The Simpsons - The Complete First Season Average Customer Review: DVD (25 September, 2001) list price: $39.98 -- our price: $29.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review America's first family of dysfunction, the Simpsons, appear in all their depraved glory in this wonderful DVD compilation of their show's premiere season. Fans accustomed to the slick appearance of the later episodes will be delighted by the rougher nature of these earlier episodes, when the characters weren't as well defined (Homer isn't quite as dumb as he is in later seasons) and the animation was still evolving. This only adds to the charm of these 13 episodes, which begin with "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," the December 1989 Christmas special in which a down-and-out Simpson family adopt Santa's Little Helper. Throughout the season, familiar faces are introduced, as we catch first glimpses of Smithers, Mr. Burns, the Flanderses, and Patty and Selma. Highlights of the season include "The Crepes of Wrath," in which Bart is sent to France as an exchange student ("Don't mess up France the way you messed up your room"); "Bart the Genius," in which Bart ends up in a school for the gifted; and "Krusty Gets Busted," in which Bart's lifelong animosity with Sideshow Bob begins. --Jenny Brown ... Home Movies - Season One Average Customer Review: DVD (16 November, 2004) list price: $34.98 -- our price: $27.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Home Movies: Season One is a television treasure that almost wasn't. After five episodes in 1999, the bright and sometimes brilliant animated satire was yanked from UPN's schedule and was rescued by Cartoon Network's late-evening "Adult Swim" programming, where it thrived for a few more seasons. Created by Loren Bouchard and Brendon Small (who provides the autobiographical voice of the show's 8-year-old hero, Brendon Small), Home Movies concerns the angst-ridden adventures of a fatherless boy who can't quite handle typical childhood challenges (school, sports) but, in his stumbling way, is advancing toward his dream of becoming a filmmaker and actor. With a manner and voice suggesting a cross between David Spade and Woody Allen, Brendon struggles--sometimes with sardonic wit, sometimes with heartbreaking candor--to protect his shaky sense of personal security while also trying to be taken seriously as an artist. Brendon lives with his single mom, Paula (wonderfully played by Paula Poundstone until episode 6, when she was replaced by the equally effective Janine Ditullio), whose own neuroses peak during some very funny moments. Among these is a school meeting that finds her removing her sweater and spouting a string of obscenities, a writing class that ends repeatedly in make-out sessions with a nameless slinger of sexy doggerel, and a disastrous date with Brendon's soccer coach, a hefty bully and all-around loser, John McGuirk (H. Jon Benjamin). McGuirk is Brendon's foil throughout the series, a drunk with rage problems and dubious ethics who often leans on the young hero as a confidante when he isn't making the poor kid run extra laps. The show's dialogue comes fast, biting, and painfully honest, characters frequently talk at the same time, and some of the best material is in the short dramas that Brendon tapes with friends Melissa (Melissa Bardin Galsky) and Jason (also H. Jon Benjamin). Home Movies is not to be missed by anyone who enjoys urbane comedy, animated or otherwise. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Features Reviews (45)

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection Average Customer Review: DVD (28 October, 2003) list price: $64.92 -- our price: $48.69 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros.cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets andprestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. Butdecades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessentialHollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American.Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, intheaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) weretransferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, andoccasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, indefiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" inthe versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Althoughthe erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly)that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by BobClampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.)But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offerexcellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in theU.S.--or anywhere else. Aladdin (Disney Special Platinum Edition) Director: Ron Clements, John Musker Average Customer Review: DVD (05 October, 2004) list price: $29.99 -- our price: $22.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). --Tom Keogh ... Lupin the 3rd - The World's Most Wanted (TV Series, Vol. 1) Average Customer Review: DVD (28 January, 2003) list price: $24.98 -- our price: $22.48 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Since his animated debut in 1971, four years after his initial appearance in Manga Action, Lupin III has remained one of the most popular characters in anime history. Created by artist Monkey Punch (Kazuhiko Kato), Lupin has starred in television series, feature films, and TV movies. These adventures are from the second TV season. Accompanied by crack shot Jigen, super-samurai Goemon, and sex bomb Fujiko, Lupin travels the world, pulling off fantastic heists and impossible escapes. Although he never manages to hang onto the loot, Lupin stays ahead of Interpol Inspector Zenigata, who chases the arch-thief with a fanaticism that rivals Wile E. Coyote's pursuit of the Road Runner. The decades-old animation looks decidedly cheesy, but the crude humor and offbeat appeal of the characters have won them countless fans on both sides of the Pacific. Now for the dvd itself,I was pleased with the voice acting and the subtitle options;I personally watch it in english,as it's aired on adult swim.I'm almost positive that the english voice actress for Fujiko is the same one that does Faye Valentine on Cowboy Bebop and Suzuka on Outlaw Star!(compare them and listen for yourself) Speaking of Miss Fujiko, you get to see ALOT more of her on this dvd if you know what I mean!So no kids... In the end I was happy with my purcahse, and will buy other volumes to watch Lupin and his friends go on all sorts of gold heisting, tomb raiding, bank robbing adventures!

Cowboy Bebop - Session 1 Director: Shinichirô Watanabe Average Customer Review: DVD (02 March, 2004) list price: $29.98 -- our price: $26.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Each of these two snazzy 20-minute installments is a self-contained and satisfying adventure tale about a futuristic hipster bounty hunter, from themost popular Japanese animated TV series of 1998. This is elegant action-comedyanime, with smoothly integrated CGI space-flight elements, gorgeousgraphics, blues harmonica and sax riffs on the soundtrack, and a no-sweatpost-Tarantino attitude. Despite occasional eruptions of gun-fu Asian-actionviolence, and some intimations of heavy-duty drug use (one especially noxious narcotic is administered as an aerosol spray, straight onto the user's eyeballs), the tone is surprisingly convivial. None of the generic tough elements are grim or mean-spirited. Lanky antihero Spike Spiegel is a planet-hopping freelance cop with a cyborg sidekick and a genetically enhanced Welsh Corgi assistant, and as many wisecracks as punchesget thrown. The emphasis is on clever twists of plot in an episodic short-storyformat. --David Chute ... Read more Features Reviews (153)

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 1 Director: Akira Takamura, Hiroyuki Ishidô, Tetsuya Watanabe, Masahiko Ôtsuka, Tsuyoshi Kaga, Hideaki Anno, Seiji Mizushima Average Customer Review: DVD (27 July, 2004) list price: $29.98 -- our price: $26.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review One of the most popular anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion offers interesting characters, sophisticated direction, and solid storytelling. A giant meteor struck Antarctica in 2000, devastating much of the Earth. Since then, humans and the mysterious aliens known as Angels have been locked in a deadly struggle. In 2015, scientists at the NERV Center in the fortress-city of Tokyo 3 are developing ways to combat the Angels, notably the Human Enhancement Project and the giant battle robots called Evangelions. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari, whose aloof father heads these research projects, is drafted to pilot Evangelion Unit 01. Shinji is a reluctant hero, as many mecha pilots are, but his reluctance is not just an arbitrary whim; it's rooted in his estrangement from his father. Shy and socially maladroit, Shinji displays a likable warmth the grimly taciturn teenagers in ordinary mecha shows lack. Rounding out the cast are Rei Ayanami, the silent, albino pilot of Unit 00; irrepressible Misato Katsuragi, who serves as a substitute mother to Shinji; technical expert Ritsuko Akagi; and Shinji's classmates Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida. Evangelion offers a dark vision of the future, but director Hideaki Anno presents it very skillfully. Episodes include: 1. "Angel Attack," 2. "Unfamiliar Ceiling," 3. "The Phone That Never Rings," 4. "Rain, Escape & Afterwards." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot vs. robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon ... Read more Features Reviews (159)

Garfield Holiday Celebrations Director: Phil Roman Average Customer Review: DVD (26 October, 2004) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $11.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review No one loves the cold months better than acerbic fat cat Garfield, who thrives on a bounty of junk food and traditional meals in the delightful collection of musical-comedy TV specials Garfield Holiday Celebrations. "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" finds the portly hero and airhead-sidekick Odie the dog scrounging through owner Jon's attic to find perfect costumes, then encountering ghosts and ghoulies that seem a tad authentic. "Garfield's Thanksgiving" is a screwball special in which Jon harasses veterinarian Liz into being his Turkey Day guest. Trouble is, Jon is clueless about how to cook a big bird; fortunately, starving Garfield has the good sense to call in Jon's spirited grandmother for a culinary rescue. Grandma shows up, too, in "A Garfield Christmas," about a family get-together that covers all the nice holiday stuff and, of course, lots of bickering, pouting, and jealousy. As long as Garfield gets his Yuletide lasagna, however, all is right with the world. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Features Reviews (26)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (Special Edition) Director: Henry Selick Average Customer Review: DVD (02 March, 2004) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is!The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy.It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown!Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." --Jim Emerson ...
