    Editorial Review

In the tradition of the multi-award-winning Star Wars: Jedi Knight, Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2, Jedi Outcast features rebel agent Kyle Katarn in exhilarating first-person action. Several years have passed since Kyle avenged his father's death and saved the Valley of the Jedi from Jerec and his band of Dark Jedi. Allowing his Force powers to languish for fear of falling to the dark side, Kyle entrusted his lightsaber to Luke Skywalker, vowing never to use it again. But when a new and menacing threat to the galaxy emerges, Kyle knows he must reclaim his past in order to save his future.

LucasArts is developing Jedi Outcast in partnership with Activision's critically acclaimed Raven Software. Players assume the role of Kyle as they employ a unique mix of weapons, Force powers, and the lightsaber in both single- and multiplayer modes. Jedi Outcast features expanded and enhanced use of the lightsaber, with new attack and defense moves. Tap into the powers of the Force, including jump, push, Jedi mind tricks, and more. Employ combat or stealth, depending on the situation. When a fight is necessary, be at the ready with an arsenal of weapons: stun baton, Bryar blast pistol, and blaster rifle to name but a few.

Explore breathtaking Star Wars locales such as Cloud City, the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, Nar Shaddaa, the smugglers' moon--plus some never-before-seen locations. Multiplayer options include deathmatch, saber-only deathmatch, and team capture the flag. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac users can be Jedi!
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is one of the first games I bought for my Mac.Gameplay is challenging and fun!The single player storyline is entertaining and pulls you into the game and keeps you there. After a slow start with no Force Powers or light saber, you really will begin to feel like a Jedi Knight.Kyle Katarn's character is one of the best characters I've seen in any game, and could easily be a film character in a Star Wars movie. Some of the most memorable levels for me are fighting as a Jedi alongside Jedi Master Luke Skywalker against a half dozen or so Reborn Dark Jedi, fighting criminals in Nar Shadaa where you really must make use of your arsenal of cool weapons, and the two key battles against Tavion and Desann.I have other, newer games, but Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is the game I keep coming back to play.

The multiplayer matches are fairly standard Quake 3 Arena fare, with one exception, the one-on-one Lightsaber Duel. You may think you're a Jedi Knight after dispatching hundereds of storm troopers and Dark Jedi in the single player game, but the real creative battles happen in Lightsaber Duels against real people online.Just please remember to fight with honor and bow before combat.

Jedi Outcast has reasonable system requirements will play well on any modern G4 or G5 Mac.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jedi Academy
As other people have said, the plot for one-player mode is very...Well, almsot pathetic. It left me confused, it didn't explain alot. But the game is still enjoyable, the graphics are OK.

In Multi-Player, you can fight other players. You can choose what you want you charecter to look like and change it as much as you want and pick your light saber. My only complaint about Multi-player mode is everyone there is rude. Well, almost everyone. There are certain clubs and "cults" where they go around calling non-members of their club/cult "Lamers".

Overall, it's a pretty good game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lightsabers, now that's different!
I am by no means a hardcore gamer, but for any fan of shooters, this is a great one, and it gives you a chance to get away from just shooting a bunch of goons (in this case, stormtroopers).Instead you can run around with a lightsaber and hack everything up ( I did this rather gleefully). For a game as old as this one is, it looks good, I'm not sure how it compares to a game using an unmodified Quake III engine but it looks almost as good as Star Trek: Elite Force 2, which is undoubtedly the best Quake game out there. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars how did gamespot give this a 9?
Im sure in the dawn of next gen consoles this was the cream of the crop but nowadays we expect more. Im not talking about graphics, Im talking about gameplay. This game is waay too linear and boring. What really bugged me is the death star attack. Was luke, wedge, and biggs the only rebels fighting against the death star??? The attack on the death star was a huge battle, and so dire taht it the rebels lost theyd be as crewed as thai hooker. So why would only send three fighters to take care of a colossus weapon like the death star? Also, luke isnt such a good main character, he gets annoying after...around the second mission. So why does it get the two? because it works, you shot ti-fighters, and its star wars.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great game buttttttttttt.....................
its just to hard for me im sorry i sound like a woos i know but its just redicolusly hard. It has great graphic though and somewhat fun gameplay. but i dont like it that much.Other than that its a great game for star wars fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars ROGUE LEADER is AMAZING!
FIRST OFF THE GRAPHICS ARE STUNNING AND THE GAMPLAY IS GREAT!It controls like a dream and the war is great.THe battle from the movies are so cool and the way TIE fighters now explode is great pyrotechnics.SOunds are great and just everything is sensational. This game is one of the greatest games ever made!Wingmen commands are also super cool.Other games don't really have wingmen. This adds a slight realism.Playing as the ace-pilot Wedge Antilles is also very cool.My cons are only in the TIEi fighters,They are too sutpid. When I first played battle of ENDOR, I six TIE fighters crashed into me.I survived but that was just crap. Also the wingman don't do much except maybe knock out ten or fifteen TIE fighter before the level ends. They fly awkwardly and fire at enemies too slowly. The other Rebel pilots that are not your wingman don't do anything expcet take up space. They should be just like your wingman and actually do something. Also, again, you fight hundreds of TIE ifhgtrs and other ships alone. You do most of the work and destroy lik hundreeds of enemies. Not too realistic on that matter. The Imperial levels are great.Destroying X-wings and Y-wings and even A-wings is fun to do.THIS GAME IS GREAT! ... All I can say is this game is too hard and it gets your attention because you can unlock darth maul as a playable character but dont waste over 10 dollars on this horrible game!

1-0 out of 5 stars This game stinks!
In this game you are always running around hacking up things withwhats supposed to be a lightsaber but looks like a colored stick! The farthest I have gotten is tattooine and I beat the poop out of Darth Maul but then the whole game gets frozen and I cant beat the stupid maggot thing again! I already know you can be darth maul but he is the same as Obi Wan except he looks like Maul and he has a one bladed saber like on Tattooine!

4-0 out of 5 stars Count Bongo & Chewy Dan have ther force!
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... blah-de-blah-de blah - you know the score by now. You're a Jedi, you kick some Dark Side ass and you get the girl... or something like that anyway! Maybe?

It's nice to know that in a universe gone bad, you can always rely on the mighty Jedi to be your saviour - and in these turbulent times, you're gonna need them. Usually, only the highly honoured Jedi knights are allowed to stand in the Jedi Council (if you've got an oddly shaped head and can lift spaceships with the power of your mind, you're pretty much in) but now it's your turn to save the day in the only way you know how - with a little bit of brightly coloured slappy-stick-type action.

Following similar story lines to the film, Jedi Power Battles is one of those typical 'film licence turned into a videogame' affairs. Starting on the Trade Federation starship, you'll encounter more deadly adversaries and visit more planets as the game progresses than an intergalactic Wish You Were Here presenter.

If you've got friends, I have Chewy Dan, you can join forces with them and play side by side in the two-player mode which is great... as long as you can both co-operate. There are loads of new levels and skills to unlock as you progress through the many levels, but you can also learn new Jedi powers from the points you gain collecting items and defeating various dark forces. As well as unlocking extra characters to battle with, you can also unlock wonderful new levels such as Kaadu Racing, where shooting Theed pilots is the aim of the game... great!

Looks-wise, Jedi Power Battles is smooth and super-fluid in most places, but it does tend to be a bit blocky and badly drawn in a few others. At times the animation leaves a lot to be desired and there are glitches and bugs even in the finished version we played. However, the in-game score is just like that of the film and draws you into the game, giving it that atmospheric touch that you need, along with an abundance of laser blasts and sabre swooshes galore.

However, the gameplay is very tough and can get really irritating, especially on the jumping sections, where you can easily get shot down like a clay pigeon. While you'll find yourself roaming about, hacking the bad guys into tiny pieces most of the time, the chance to joyride one the enemy's vehicles is a welcome break from the monotony. Unfortunately, in these sections the game has an annoying tendency to allow you to get stuck in the scenery, causing you to lose a life in the process.

At the end of the day, Jedi Power Battles does exactly what you'd expect it to - there's plenty of action to get to grips with, along with enough familiar faces and locations to stick it firmly in the roots of the Star Wars universe. If you're looking for a damn tough platformer that's going to last you a fair old while... well, you could do a lot worse than this. It's just not amazing, but it's close... To a hardcore Star Wars fan, it's amazing! Maybe?

Well, I picked this title up for £6.99 st Stretford Arndale, you can't really go wrong for that price eh! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In this 3D action game based on the epic Star Wars prequel, you get to jump into the story and play an active role in the liberation of the besieged planet of Naboo. The Phantom Menace closely follows the plot from the film (and will give it away if you haven't yet seen the movie) and includes all of the major conflicts, conversations, and events you saw on the big screen. In addition, the game adds a number of transitional scenes and challenges to help flesh out the plot a bit. In each major segment of the story, you will control of a different character: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Amidala, and Captain Panaka (the queen's loyal captain of the guards).

The game is played from a third-person perspective, similar to Tomb Raider and Heretic II. Basic gameplay is reminiscent of these games as well, so you'll find yourself facing a number of agility and reflex puzzles as you make your way through the game. (In other words, expect to do a lot of jumping, rolling, and running.) And of course, you'll also have to fight your way past hordes of evil battle droids. The graphics are impressive, as are the sound effects, music, and voice acting. Overall, LucasArts did a fine job of re-creating the look and feel of the movie with this game. The gameplay may not appeal to every action gamer out there (this is not a Quake clone by any stretch), but it could be a blast for Star Wars fans and any player who enjoys a Tomb Raider-style gaming experience. Now if only you could turn that lightsaber on Jar-Jar Binks.... --Mike Ryan ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars It's cool
I'm not really much into top of the line graphics and all that stuff. I play a game if it sounds fun. So yeah the graphics aren't the best but the games alot of fun. Several people were complaining about Tatooine levels. If you play it the way you're supposed to then yeah its sorta boring. I don't play it the way I'm supposed to when I've finished the game once. Try attacking some random people or walking throu the dung. Make it interesting do it your way, if you want to run through the streets of Tatooine and killing every person in sight and being chased by all the guards, swinging their vibroaxes at you and yelling "You're a no good killer," and stuff like at you than do so. I've always liked padme in the movies so playing her is pretty fun, yeah when you first get her she has an extremely wimpy stun blaster, but if you look behind you or go into nearby buildings, there are grenades, blasters, and proton torpedo launchers. The level on Coruscant is my least favorite in the entire game, just because running around in the depthes of Coruscaht trying to find Queen Amidala gets annoying. The only other level I don't like is the 4th level, which takes Obi-Wan trying to get Queen Amidala out of Theed, while having to get her past AAT's and bunches of droids, and if you leave her alone too long they'll say "The Queen has been killed," when she alives you get sayings such as "YOu're stepping on my dress," and "I never knew Jedi could be so rude," from her. Overall it's a really fun game just play it your way, explore, do what you please on it, (within what the game allows of course)

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining
It's been awhile, but I recall first playing this game with my brother and us declaring it the most enjoyable LucasArts venture yet.Yes it has its flaws, especially now in 2004 when videogame graphics have since made stunning advancements. But this 1999 game is simply classic - the "choose-your-own-response" dialogue, deceptively tricky puzzles, lightsaber and shoot-'em-up action - I'm sure any Star Wars fan who missed it the first time around would have a ball picking it up now, especially with the marked-down price.

4-0 out of 5 stars good game, but with some bugs
This is a great game and its fun too, but the bugs get annoying. but first the good things. The graphics are fairly good, the gameplay is good, the levels ar good, the weapons are good, and i like all the Characters you are in the diffirent levels, and it challenges you. Now the bad stuff. the camera views get messed up some times, some times the the characters repeat what they just said, some times it locks up when you try to save a game, some times the sound gets messed up (and its not my sound card), and some times the characters start saying things when a. they all ready said it b. your not even close to them. But overall this is a good game, and i recommend it to any one who likes star wars or adventure/Action games. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Master of Teras Kasi
I read the reviews on this game after renting it and am planning on buying it, I am disgusted to see what people say about it, the controlls really aren't that bad, its a little slower then most fighting games, but not horrible so, the special moves are a litte unbalanced yes, but you don't have to do special moves, all in all I think its worth owning, in fact I go so far as to say its a must have for any star wars geek(I can say geek I am a Star Wars Geek

2-0 out of 5 stars Classic example of "great idea, terrible execution"
In the mid-late nineties, Lucas Arts decided to try something new and unique with their Star Wars license - a fighting game. That's not a misprint - they actually released a Star Wars fighting game. But was this new venture a good idea for Lucas Arts and for the Star Wars franchise? Read on and find out for yourself.

    PROS:
-Let me start by saying the variety of characters you can choose from is pretty good. You've got lesser-known characters like a Tusken Raider and a Gamorrean, and the wildly popular characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. The game also introduces at least one new character.
-The game also has secret characters - a Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, Jodo Kast, and an alternate version of Princess Leia.
-Every character has his or her own unique weapon. Some characters always have their weapon equipped, others must have a motion entered in order to draw it.

    CONS:
-The graphics for this game are downright terrible. As stated above, they look like they were made a year before the game was released.
-The control, what I feel is the most important thing in a video game, is just horrible. Not the button placement, but rather the fighting engine. In other words, adjustingthe controls isn't likely to make your day any easier. The primary challenge from this game comes not from what difficulty you select, but rather the bad fighting engine.
-The secret characters are just regular characters in different outfits (The Stormtrooper has the same moves as Han Solo, and the alternative version of Princess Leia has the same moves as the normal version of Princess Leia.)
-The characters are horribly imbalanced in terms of their fighting strength. A Tusken Raider is a better fighter than Han Solo? I find that a little hard to believe.
-Star Wars games are always either a "hit" or a "miss", and this one is a "miss", sadly. Too bad, because this was actually a great idea.

    OVERALL:
Pass this game by. Not only is it out of production and extremely tough to find now, it's also not even worth finding. Do not buy this game unless you're the kind of Star Wars nerd who can't live without every Star Wars game ever made. There are much better fighting games out there, and there are much better Star Wars games out there. Trust me, you're better off imagining these fights than actually playing this game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fighting Frenzy
I rented this and thought it was an awesome game, and is.All I can say really is that over time, it gets boring. If you really want to play it, rent it, don't buy it.If you own a Tekken game or something and never get tired of it, go ahead and try to purchase. The graphics are fair, and gameplay is great, but controls are confusing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars it's all right
i like the story and plot and the cutscenes but the only hard part about it is that it won't let you cheat and go on the next level like in tie fighter and there's not really all that much you can do besides shoot things with lasers when you should be converting it to engines and using misiles or torpedoes that's all i have to say

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (actually, it's ours), I was playing a lot of old Super Nintendo games on my PC with emulators. Then I thought, hey, I have a 600mhz with 256 ram, and lots of hard drive space, so why don't I try one of these new-fangled hi-tech 3D PC games?Well, this is actually quite an old game but if you have anything close to my PC's specs, and you are anything close to a fan of Star Wars, this is truly a fantastic ride.I recommend one has a gamepad or joystick (...).My gamepad works great (it is similar to the old Playstation One controller).I plug in my headphones (also recommended), pump up the volume, and off I go into space, flying around in the infinite void, shooting tie fighters, star cruisers of the evil empire, and generally having a ton of fun.

This version of the game also has a whole additional game on it also, and with a 3D video card (even the most basic), the graphics are amazing.Dated, but hey, this puts the graphics of the old SNES to shame. It is VERY easy to set up and get started, and can be as tough as you want it.I've hardly even scratched the surface of all the various features and levels and know I have a lot of future fun in store for me with this. The music, while in midi form, is (to me) almost indistinguishable from MP3 quality stuff. And you get a lot of music. All sorts of variations on John William's great Star Wars scores.

There are also a ton of options. You can turn the music up or down, or off.You can turn the sound effects (also great) up or down or off.You can play your OWN music (MP3's) if you want while playing the game.Try some electronica/trance, or some Pink Floyd!Get creative, have fun.You can give yourself unlimited weapons and make yourself and your ship invulnerable to damage. The possibilites truly are endless. This is halfway between an arcade type shooter and a true space combat simulator, with various levels of both.In a short time, I have played the game for dozens of hours already, and am still discovering new things, and cool features. There is a neat pilot training feature, a "film" room, talking characters and background voices, it goes on and on.I can't believe I waited so long to buy/play this, but then, I am but a young, struggling Jedi-starfighter who has been deserted on a lonely planet for awhile.

If you have ever wanted to fly off into space in a variety of ships and enjoy the trip without leaving your PC, and if you are at all even the most casual Star Wars fan, you just gotta buy this, and now!You don't know what you're missing if you've never played.Smoke 'em if you've got 'em, and/or have a drink to warm your innards, turn down the lights, get that gamepad or joystick in hand, put on the headphones, and escape into the ride of your life. ..Amazing!And I haven't touched any of my old SNES rom games since buying this.Best [$$] you'll ever invest in a whole universe of fun, which you can visit any time you want to escape from earthbound reality for awhile.Did I mention that although it's a jewel case, there's a HUGE free instructional manual? What are you waiting for?

I know more recent and better graphically-enhanced Star Wars games are out there, and I've sampled them, but the system requirements on this make it playable for almost ANYONE with a PC, and for now, I'd like you to stop reading this, and go click this classic gem (and still unequaled in many ways) into your shopping cart NOW!You will thank me later, and as always, "May the Force be with you..."

    4-0 out of 5 stars Under-rated Game
I've owned every other Star Wars game on the 64, and without a doubht, nothing suprasses Rougue Squadren.

I had my doubhts about this game. I started off playing Rougue Squadren, then Naboo, and Racer, both Racer and Naboo lost there reply value after a weel for me, but RS i one I will always go back to now and then... So I thought I might give Shadows Of The Empire a go. I had low expectations for it, but actualy comparing it to RS is useless because this version is completly different to RS and BFN! It suprised me when I got to the 2nd stage and it had gone Goldeneye style! You run around as a guy named Dash, you start with a laser, but you can find missiles, proton thingies, stun guns and my fvorite that just blows half the room away, I dunno what it was called but it's great...oh, and a flame thrower!!! Would have been nice if the enemys caught fire or something, instead of act like the where shot, but it's still cool.

Half the game is on foot in a Goldeneye/Duke Nukem kind of way. You open doors, collect things, can fly around with a jet pack, have to do things to get to certain area first before moving on the level and things like that. The rest of the game is flying and shooting in your ships.

Level one is the battle of hoth, and where this games story begins. It is is almost like the Battle Of Hoth in RS on one of the bonus missions. The graphics arnt RS, but that didnt matter. You gun down the probe driods, go after the Chicken Walkers, then trip the Walkers. Then the story begins, whats happening is this game starts from Empire Strikes Back (the movie) and after the Battle Of Hoth, it's following the story of another Rebellion, Dash. And what it leads to is the events that have happened inbetween Empire Strikes Back & Return Of The Jedi.

From the movies, you only see the end of Empire as they go looking for Han, then the next movies starts with his rescue. Well this game is what happened inbetween then.

The graphics are decent, there not RS but it's still fun. I know it's the original, but it felt good to actualy get out of the crafts and vehicles and do some running around for a change.

Only 3 negative things I have to say.
    1) You kill Boba Fett in this, so that makes no continuity sense.
    2) No multiplayer :( wouldve made a great 2 or more layer game I reckon.
    3) it would have been nice to be able to do a custom edit to the controls, and be able to choose what button you want to do what with. Because of the 100's of other shoot'em up games, everytime I went to shoot I was pressing the Z button by mistake. Theres no programmed control setting to use the Z button to fire. Which makes no sense, because the Z button is known as the trigger button, but all it does in this game is either veiw, or run left, depending on what control setting you have set.

So, basicly, the graphics arnt superb, it was one of the 1st games for the 64, and you can see the many advancments they made for RS. But this game is still good. SOFE & RS are 2 completly different games. If you love RS or BFN, and you havent played this one 'cause you think it is inferior, then think again. It holds its own and stands up still. There is even a level on speeder bikes! Reminded me a bit of Racer, but not quite the same; it's hard to go fast and stay in control in this. There isnt any ships to choose in mission like RS, basicly you start with the Snow Speeder, go onto Dash's ship that is much like the Falcon. And apparently theres a code to fly an X wing in the last level, and cheats to play as the AT-ST, but I didnt try them.

I found it tougher then you'd think to stay alive, so I recomend you enter the Debug code.

What you do is start a new game in a fresh slot, (earase if you none free) then enter your name as ".Wampa..Stompa" and note the . on there. There is a space at the start, and 2 between Stompa. It is case sensative, so make sure you press the L button to change from upper case to lower case. Then ok it all and start the game. Press pause as soon as the level starts, and on the pause menu, hold down all the c buttons, the L, R, & Z buttons and left on the arrow pad (hold them all at once together. Then while holding them down, move the control stick to the left for about 5 seconds, you will hear a noise. Then hold it right for 5 seconds. Then left, then right, then left for the same time. And you should get pink writing come up.
(TIP: the way I did it was used my finger to hold the button, then used my lips to hold the stick left and right)
That pink writing you can toggle through by press L or R, and then Start to enable it. You basicly just need the invincabilty and all weapens. Maybe the level skip or teleport(to another location of the level your on). Have fun with it. Each time you want to use it again, hold all the buttons down again (all C's, L, R, Z, left) and then tap the analog to the left and the menu will display again whenever you want it.

May the shwartz be with you.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Game-Nostalgia
I recently went crazy and bought an N64 system, an expansion pak, a memory card, and 13 games. Thing was, it all happened in less than 2 days and it happened cause the sweet memories I had when I was a child. I bought the N64 mainly for the game Zelda: Ocarina of Time (by the way if you've never played it, by all cost and means, do so). However, this game was also part of that sweet memory which I'm trying to relive again.

This game, from my experience a long time ago, was fun. The only minor problem is sometimes the lack of directions, camera angle can be changed but sometimes even with the change you don't exactly get just what you want still, and controlling is a little hard sometimes so jumping from one spot to another usually ends up in falling to your doom, but again not if you get use to it. Same for walking on ledges.

You start out with a small spaceship (don't know the names that well not much of a star wars fan) and you use your laser guns to kill the small two legged robots (at-st?) and these ropes to entangle and destroy the big ones. Than for the next two levels or so are first person shooters.

The thing about this game is that soon it gets boring so what you do is be creative in killing your enemies. For example: Level 2 or something, where you meet these hairy beasts haha, wow, anyways what I do is, they are locked in this room with some guys. So what I do is run in, save up my guns, and run around and open the cages and let them handle those guys. Afterwards you let the two beasts fight each other to save ammo. Trick is to not let them see you and don't disturb them while they are fighting each other. And in the first level I love killing the smaller robots with my own ship. Suicidal style.

This game is nice still. I think its quite replayable. It was hard for me to play it then cause I didn't have a memory card and each time I turned the game off I got to start in the beginning of that level again. I never beated the train level.
You really can't go wrong with this game. Just don't buy it for more than $15. I bought one that worked great for $7.50. Shop around. Nice day to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than it's given credit for
Shadows of the Empire was one of those Star Wars games that had a few strikes against it before it was ever released. First it was a game based off a book and not a movie, so right away the casual fan was a little lost. Second, although you come in contact with characters from the movies, you play as an original one from the book. So It didn't suprise me when the game was released that people treated it a little too harshley.

So is the game as bad as they say? No. True the game isn't perfect, but it is still a pretty fun game. I found the control scheme easy to use and the graphics were some of the best on the N64 at the time. Also it featured both on foot missions and flight sim-styled combat missions. Both gave you the option of playing in a first or third person perspective. Now while a majority of the missions were on foot, the game really shined during the flight levels. The final level was a fast paced space battle that included dozens of ships on screen at once, all well rendered with a minimum amount of slowdown.

If I had to gripe about anything in this game I'd say that the on foot missions get a little boring. You'll spend alot of time going back and forth solving puzzles that only slow the game down. On the plus side you do get to fight one of the most popular villians from the films, Boba Fett, in an all out shoot out includind dueling jet pack action.

So if you're a Star wars fan and own an N64 but never played this game, you might be suprised how fun it is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any FPS fan!
I'll say right from the outset that I'm not a really huge Star Wars fan, though I did enjoy the films. But I am a first-person-shooter fan going way back to Wolfenstein 3D, and I know my FPSs and I know outstanding level design. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 has some of the best level design and by far the most memorable locations of any FPS I've ever played. Please don't confuse this with graphical splendor. Back in 1997 I was stunned at how good this game looked. Now it's 2005 and I've just now decided to play it again. And while the graphics do look ancient compared to modern games, I cannot describe what a rush it is to visit these old familiar 'places'. The sense of 'place' is so powerful, I felt like I was visiting real places I had actually been to before. It was like re-visiting real places instead of virtual ones. Look folks, if you are a graphics junkie, you've really got no business playing any game older than 3 or 4 years old. But if gameplay is your thing, this is your game. The levels are absolutely VAST. I have never in my life felt such vertigo when playing a game. And that includes all modern ones. As far as inducing vertigo goes, this game has never been challenged. Even Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy don't come close to matching this game's dizzying heights (or vast distances). The 'puzzles' are really quite logical and fit right into the game. Playing an old game like this is akin to watching an old movie. Sure, the technology is old, but the heart is still there, and both old and new can be enjoyed equally if you can accept each on its own terms. Replaying Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 has been a real treat for me. I just can't believe I waited 8 years to do it! Also, for reference, it runs superbly at its highest settings on my Windows XP w/ SP2, Athlon XP 2600+ with 1 gig ram, and an NVidia 6600GT w/ 128 video ram. Using a Logitech optical mouse and am have absolutely no control or video issues. In-game settings: 1600 x 1200 resolution, checked the box for 3D acceleration and turned on every option there is, including entering '32' in the 'Minumum Texture Size' box and checked the box for 'Back Buffer In System Memory'. Also increased view size to just short of maximum. Only problem I'm having is manually saving the game by exiting out to the save menu. When I save the game that way, the game will crash to desktop, but the save DOES work, so I just re-load the game and in 10 seconds I'm going again. QUICKSAVE however, works without a hitch, so that's what I use most of the time. Also, each time I start the game, I have to set the graphics options...annoying, but nothing to it, and well worth the small hassle to enjoy this game at its highest settings on a modern computer. Aside from the manual save glitch, it's VERY stable on my rig. I can play for hours with not a single visual problem. There are very few 'classic' games that run this well on a modern WinXP rig.

      3-0 out of 5 stars A classic...in it's time....
This is a review for Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. Amazon.com is grouping all the 'Jedi Knight' games together which is a huge mistake, because all of them are very different.

There is at least a five-year gap between Jedi Knight and its sequel, Outcast. In this game, Kyle Katarn learns about his force heritage and must battle 7 Dark Jedi led by Jerec for control of the Valley of the Jedi. In all honesty, while this game was hailed as a classic and received many 'game of the year' awards during its initial release, it hasn't aged well. Most polygon-based shooters dont, and it's somewhat painful to look back on the rudimentary character models and textures (though the basic level design itself is still top notch). Outcast also improved on everything that Jedi Knight brought to the table, including a better lightsaber combat system and better implementation of force powers. I won't deny that the game was an absolute blast to play through years ago, but nostalogic value alone doesn't make this one worth picking up.

What DOES make it worth picking up though, is that the game featured an intricate story told through cutscenes with live actors. Everyone is shot on a bluescreen, sure, but the acting is mostly up to Star Wars standards, and it's worth buying to unlock all the cinemas and watch this cool Star Wars footage.

As a game, there's really no reason to pick up the original Jedi Knight anymore, but if you're interested in viewing the cutscenes, then this is an absolute must-have. I'm giving this game 3 stars because 5 stars, what it was worth upon original release, doesn't accurately represent the game today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Game Since 1997!
As being a dedicated JK'er since 1997, I have to write a review for anyone out there thinking about purchasing this game.

First off, this game was way ahead of its time when it was first released. The graphic engine and multiplayer aspects dominated any competition there were at the time!

The never-ending contributions from JK players all over the world also make it one of the all time best games ever! The endless array of 3rd party levels and mods there are for this game are astronomical! Over the years, fellow JK Editors have found ways of updating it to make it play and look better. I am one of them. I have created a multiplayer level series for this game called The Dralloc Series (www.theddc.cjb.net) which shows exactly how much this game has grown!

With the utilization of new 3D graphic power, Jedi Knight really shines! The lighting and architectural abilities of the JK engine make absolutely outstanding visuals that make you think as if you were really there! (especially in Dralloc Levels)

The single player aspect of this game also stands out. Either ripping through it with a wide arsenal of high-powered weapons, or weilding your trusty lightsaber, you are also accompanied with several force powers of your choice. They really come in handy when up against the stonger, more difficult enemies!

In conclusion, this is by far one of the best First Person Shooters of all time! Definately worth the buy! Own a piece of Star Wars history today! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars typical lucasfilm
typical of a lucasfilm star wars game.i,e, it's probably ok for kids, but that's about it.

        5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Dated now I know, but games are about so much more than high-end graphics. This game was revolutionary in it's time, and is still even 10 years later, great fun to play. Very challenging and so engaging that you forget about the low quality graphics after a while.

Very little that I can criticize about the game, seeing as they pretty much put together the best they could with the technology of the time. A lot of people might be put off by the fact the background music is tinny MIDI files, but I find them amusing. They are rather *good* MIDIs at any rate.

4-0 out of 5 stars oldie but goodie
