Sony PSOne Console Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $99.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If the original PlayStation was the video game console equivalent of the'60s-era Volkswagen Beetle--economic, reliable, loads of fun--the PS One couldbe considered the new Beetle--a hip restyling of those same qualities. Make no mistake: the PS One has all of the same functionality as the originalPlayStation workhorse, will work with all of the same peripherals andaccessories, and will play the existing PlayStation game library, as well asaudio CDs (also note that, like the original PlayStation, it's not compatiblewith the more advancedPlayStation2). The difference here is that this new model is quite a bit smaller thanits older brother, and quite a bit cuter, too. The system is made up of a 32-bit, 34-MHz RISC processor with 16 Mbits of mainmemory, 8 Mbits of graphics memory, 24-channel stereo sound, double-speed CD-ROMdrive, and one Dual Shock analog controller. That's not a lot of power, comparedto a next-generation system like theSegaDreamcast; but, when you factor in its very low price and the enormouslibrary of games that are available (more than 1,000 that are spread acrossevery genre imaginable), one can see easily why it's as good a deal as ever. Ifrumors of exciting future accessories for the PS One (a four-inch LCD screenattachment, to name one) are true, this little machine could become a greatoption for the on-the-go gamer. --Porter Hall ... Spyro The Dragon Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Spyro is a cute purple dragon in a bit of a pickle. Each of Spyro's dragon friends has fallen victim to the nefarious Gnasty Gnorc, who has turned them into crystals. Accompanied by Sparx the dragonfly, Spyro sets out to free his buddies, while collecting gems and dragon eggs. Sparx also serves as Spyro's health-o-meter, glowing gold when Spyro is healthy and turning dusky green as he tires. To boost his energy, Spryo can blast docile creatures with fire, turning them into butterflies, which Sparx transforms into much-needed fuel. This title has bright graphics in six well-developed worlds, each with several subworlds, including bogs, deserts, and ice worlds. Unlike some action games, in Spyro the Dragon the enemies are more fun than frightening. In the Peace Keepers world, for example, Spyro must burn down the monster soldiers' tent, sending one of the minions running out, quaking with fear or, if you're lucky, dropping his drawers and shooting a moon. Spyro's movements (fire breathing, gliding, jumping, and climbing) require entry-level gaming skills. For this reason, Spyro the Dragon is an excellent title for youngsters or less experienced players, who want to play without having to master complex movement combinations. --Kasty Thomas Pros:

Croc: Greatest Hits Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (18)
The game really wasn't difficult in itself, but the fast panning camera angles often made for "blind jumps" from even the most gifted of gamers. I liked the character, and the whole " rescue my friends who are held captive" storyline was a tried and true formula for success.Unfortunately in the end, it didn't pan out. The game went on to sell millions, and maybe rightfully so. I just suggest you take something for the motion sickness you will undoubtedly have... before you play it. alankelly ... Pokemon Silver Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (12 October, 2000) list price: $34.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Featuring a new adventure that's filled with numerous enhancements andinnovations, this long-awaited sequel to Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow greatly improves upon the series' winning formula, and makesfor an even more insanely addictive and wholly absorbing gaming experience. Like Pokémon Gold--which essentially is the same story, with minorgameplay variations--Pokémon Silver casts players in the familiarrole of a young Pokémon Trainer who's out to collect as many differentkinds of Pokémon as possible. As in previous games, gameplay consistsmostly of exploration (completing various quests in the process) andPokémon battles, which employ a unique battle system that's like acomplex twist on rock-paper-scissors. But, despite the similarities, it's quite apparent that PokémonSilver is a whole new ball game from the start. The game is played out inreal time, with the current time and day of the week (recorded by an internalclock) having a direct impact on gameplay elements, such as what Pokémonyou'll find in the wild, and when certain events occur and characters appear. While there are too many new and improved features in PokémonSilver to list here, among the highlights are 100 new Pokémon(including two new types), new evolution processes (including breeding), and amore streamlined game interface that has better-organized menus and buttonshortcuts. Although it's easier to progress in Pokémon Silver than in theprevious games, the sheer amount of fun and game time that's involved isdaunting. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better value than this one. --JoeHon Pros:

Cool Boarders 4 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 October, 1999) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If 13-year-old Shaun White can ride with the big guys in theprofessional snowboarding circuit, then certainly you can master asnowboarding game simulation. Right? For the first time in the CoolBoarder series, PlayStation owners can challenge the likes of Mr.White and 15 other pro riders who have been digitally re-created forthe game. Add eight new tricks (such as hand plants in the half pipe) and acomplete build-a-rider mode (which allows you to create your own snowysuperstar), and you've pretty much summed up the major differencesbetween Cool Boarders 3 and Cool Boarders 4. One of thecoolest new effects in the game is that riders now sink into deeppowder instead of skating right over it. A signature of the series isthe ability to throw punches at other riders during races, but playerscan choose to turn that feature off for a cleaner challenge. Players who were gaga over Cool Boarders 3 will be pleased withthe enhancements in this game. But with gameplay that is essentiallythe same as its predecessor, gamers looking for a unique thrill maywish to carve a turn and look elsewhere. --Jeff Young Pros:

There are a few pros. The 16 different boarders give you a diverse selection of strengths and weaknesses. I also like the ability to customize your boarder, which can give you the upper hand in a competition. But this doesn't amount to a whole lot. The game is still too slow. When it comes to the tricks, I was just tapping different keys randomly, trusting my luck. It gave up after a while. I have heard that Cool Boarders 3 was quite good, so maybe I will give that a try. But as for this one, I would pass on it altogether.

GameCube Indigo Starter Pack - New Low Price Average Customer Review: Video Game list price: $249.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This GameCube starter kit comes with one indigo GameCube, two indigo controllers, and one memory card Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others. For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files; the company has concentrated its efforts on games. The prelaunch titles we've seen play uniformly smooth, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional "bottlenecks" that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down, hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum. The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based media rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas. While most other systems likewise store their games on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as it is to deter would-be software pirates. Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers--Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can only play Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars. The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games. It even has a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming. ... Read more Reviews (219)
OK!So people are telling me gamecube is a kiddie game..mmmm so let me get this straight? Yeah thats what I thought......Im not hatin on xbox but what do You guys have........BESIDES HALO!.....dino crisis and ninja gaiden?.....oddworld and dino crisis 3?........yeah were are all your other xclusives........I dont have an xbox even though my bro does,.......but I dont get why people are hatin on cube........If I remember Resident evil remake wasnt a kiddie game............ Get gamecube.......ITS ONLY 99$!!!:( Even Though I got it when it was first like 199$..........sigh
This is a gamer's console. Yes, it looks a little comical in nature (a purple cube... that's cute), and the games being advertised with the system might have seemed a little childish(Luigi's Mansion?). Don't let that fool you though. This console is for people looking to game. It doesn't play your favorite DVDs or your music. Instead, Nintendo offers you crisp graphics and enjoyable gameplay. I think Nintendo is sticking to it's roots and keeping a firm control of games and characters that have made their consoles popular over the years, BUT more and more games are being made for this system (Silent Hill, anyone?). This console has such titles as Metroid, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil available for play, and these are not what one would consider "childish" games. Also, this system is geared to suit everyone's gaming needs from children to teens to adults. That's a plus in my book. Playstation and Xbox (both of which I own as well) seems to have the older gamer in mind (The average gamer is 28 after all) and tends to forget that children do play these systems. I don't think Nintendo has forgotten that. That's one reason it will remain a favorite with me. If you're looking for just a valuable gaming experience, this is definitely a good way to start. ... Sonic Adventure 2 Battle Average Customer Review: Video Game (15 February, 2002) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Sega's mascot made his 3-D debut on the Dreamcast, but with the demiseof that system the zippy blue hedgehog is popping up everywhere--including onthe GameCube. Unfortunately, his first next-gen appearance, Sonic Adventure2: Battle, is marred by the same 3-D camera problems that plagued theDreamcast version, and the multiplayer "battle" component isn't all that it'scracked up to be. Right out of the gate, players have the option of choosing Hero (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) or Dark (Dr. Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge) quests, which arecompletely different. Sonic and his dark counterpart Shadow traverse levels atwarp speed colleting coins and power-ups while fighting enemies in the game'smost exhilarating moments. Unfortunately, the other characters are nowhere nearas fun to play. Dr. Eggman and Tails fight through levels that require littlemore than constant button-mashing to shoot an endless procession of enemies, andKnuckles and Rouge participate in seemingly endless levels that requiresearching for a variety of objects. Graphically, the game is a bit of a letdown considering the processing muscle ofGameCube. Models are fairly simplistic, and level textures are sometimes bland.Game Boy Advance owners can use a link cable to download Chao from the game andtrain them on the go, but the rewards for doing so are minor considering thetime investment involved. The main feature this game offers over its Dreamcastpredecessor is the variety of multiplayer modes, which are fun but offer none ofthe depth or replayability of standalone multiplayer games like Super SmashBros. Melee. Still, they are nice additions--especially the racinggames--and round out a flawed single-player component. Sonic addicts who missed thisgame the first time around on the Dreamcast will definitely want to check itout, but the finicky camera, tedious non-Sonic/Shadow levels in single-playermode, and surprisingly shallow multiplayer components (especially the Chaogames) turn what could have been a great game into a mere good one. --T. Kingdom Hearts Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (20 September, 2002) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $17.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ever wondered what would happen if the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney collided? Its an odd concept to be sure, but from the most schizophrenic of acorns the mighty gaming oak of Kingdom Hearts has grown. Legendary role-playing game makers Square have been given unprecedented liberties with the entire Disney universe and have created a game featuring everything from The Nightmare Before Christmas to The Little Mermaid. This is odd enough in itself when you have characters as disparate as Tarzan and Donald Duck teaming up, but becomes majorly freaky when Square thrown in a variety of their own characters such as Cloud, Squall, and Aeris from the various Final Fantasy games. But this incongruity has one side benefit in that the storyline behind the game is by necessity rather vague, which seems to have stopped Square from filling three CDs full of their usual New Age whining about Mother Earth. Instead theyve spent even more time on the graphics, and the end result is a quite stunning 3-D cartoon. As for the gameplay, it may come as a surprise to learn that it doesnt actually feature, as all the Final Fantasy games do, turn-based combat. Instead it's essentially a scrolling beat-'em-up-cum-platformer with exactly the kind of complicated Square-style knobs youd expect. The game may be a little shallow, but its an impressive artistic achievement and to be quite frank any title that allows you to magically summon Bambi out of thin air to attack evil demons of the underworld has got to be worth some sort of recommendation. --David Jenkins ...
