  A Deal Worth Getting
  Before I begin, I must point out that this review is somewhat bias as I have a great love for adventure games.For those of you who don't play adventure games, do continue as it might provoke an interest.For those of you who love adventure games, why are you sitting on your tush and reading this?Get it already.
  Buyers Beware!!!
  Will not run on my computer; have a new top of the line Dell XPS chassis, and everything else works fine.Myst locks up computer every time I try to run it, have to Ctl-Alt-Del to force the machine to shut down in order to unlock it, always in the middle of a game.Very frustrating!!Threw the CD away.

Great Game True to the Orriginal
DOn't believe all the bad reviews as this is a great game. This game has great story and it expands on the Prison books in the first game. Tothose who said it changed that it didn't as it was never expalined nor confirmed that they died and that is explained in the opening montage. The story is excellent and intriguing and the puzzels are hard but most of the puzzles are in the myst games. This is a great game and as to it not running, it won't run on DVD-RW drives only, and the only problem I had was to upgrade my graphics card and it wotks fine. It even works on my Dell XPS laptop. If all you have is a computer with minimum graphics and only a DVD-RW you can't run it. Otherwise it will run great.

Monkey puzzle -Are you kidding?!
I loved the first MYST game. When I received MYST IV as a gift,I was brimming with anticipation. Initially,after nearly arriving to meet Atrus,something went horribly wrong with the graphics. After a while,I was able to do something (disabling something,I think)to get the graphics back. It was worth it because the worlds were beautifully done,especially Serenia. It was gorgeous and intriguing. As spectacular as the graphics were,a couple of the puzzles were annoying or arbitrary,but difficult.I normaly enjoy puzzle games;they're actually the only type I usually play. With MYST IV,I found that I had to consult the official game guide(also a gift)twice. I don't like having to resort to that,it can spoil a game. I did like the fact that there was some interaction with the characters and some of the interesting features of the game(SPOILER;the linking books;END SPOILER,the camera,etc...). Then,just as I was starting to enjoy the game I came across something that had no place whatsoever in a puzzle solving game-requirement of impossibly quick mouse movements! I'm talking about(SPOILER)that absolutely impossible Monkey puzzle. Once you figured out the sequence,it was NOT humanly possible to do it in the alloted time! (END SPOILER)I really don't know how anybody managed it. I admit that I may not be the quickest with the mouse,which is why I don't play games which require uber speed. But,the MYST games are puzzle games which should not require that. It was like finding a polar bear in the Bahamas. Suffice it to say,I could not get past the monkey puzzle. Was there a patch for that or something? If not,there should have been. I obviously can't comment on the remainder of the game,since I didn't get to finish it. It really annoys me. It's tantamount to being given half a book. Well,unless UBISOFT has done something to alleviate that problem(since Spring 2005);I wouldn't recommend this game unless you're VERY quick with a mouse. It's a shame,because I think that this would have been a good game. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE MONKEY PUZZLE,I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS GAME 4 STARS IN BOTH CATEGORIES.

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!
I turned my 6 year old son to the first Myst game and so him and I finished Myst, Riven, Exile on the Playstation.I'm NOT a big PC gamer fan for one reason:They require you to upgrade your machine just to play the game.This is the reason why I feel platform games are much better.When you purchase a game you know it's going to play on the PS2, XBox, whatever.PC games are not so forgiving!!

What Happened?
I've been a fan of Myst games since the original came out years, and years ago.I can honestly say that I was incredibly disappointed in the quality of the last installment of my beloved game.The graphics were quite poor, and the level of difficulty was pathetic.the word "Easy" doesn't quite paint an accurate picture.
Very Dissapointed
Knowing this would be the last chapter to the Myst series, I was hoping it's creators would come through with the most beautiful and immersive worlds yet.
Disappointed
Bought this game for my husband for Xmas last year and he was finished by bed time.No kidding and that is taking out time for dinner with family etc.. to say I am disappointed is really an understatement.The actual game was all right.The puzzles werent as difficlult as I thought they could have been. ... LOVED THIS GAME!
The scenerey is beautiful.You can change her cloths and appearence even.I keep hoping Myst will make another game like it. It is in the 3rd person and I think it's better than all the other Myst games put together!
A different approach to Myst..that works!

Better than Myst?
I for some reason had skipped the URU series of games completely. I recently realized my folly and had a 3 month down time to rectify this. Too bad that URU live was never released. Ubisoft goes a little too soft
You can see screenshots of Myst V and find what you recall to be D'ni.Recalling Myst and Riven, I remember being emmersed into the game through storyline and the detailed visuals that represented worlds and culture.The detail that went into creating these worlds were so believable that I believed I was actually there.When Ubisoft took over for creating the Myst games, cheese was poured over the storyline and a 3-D engine was put in.Suddenly I was taken out of the believability in the worlds that were created.With a 3-D engine, quality in resolution and detail was reduced to less than 30% of the original.The choice of using a 3-D engine was like taking something that was innovative and turning it into every other game on the market.It is now a first/third person shooter without the gun and people to kill. A younger audience may find this game entertaining for a few days.As a fan of Myst and Riven, I'm not impressed with the degradation done to the series by Ubisoft.

Myst V Crashes - Ubisoft Refuses to Support Mac Customers
I would like to review this game from the experience of playing it.Unfortunately, there is a KNOWN problem (known to Ubisoft) that causes the game to freeze Mac OS X.I have a fully loaded Mac (2.5 GHz dual processor, Radeon 9600 Pro, 2 GB RAM, etc.) and the game crashes at even the lowest video quality settings. (The first Myst's game graphics were better than what Myst V provides at this setting).Ubisoft refuses to correct the problem... Do some research... search for "Myst V Crash OS X" and read all the forums discussing just how much Ubisoft really cares about their Mac customers.DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

Still Sharp After 10 Years!
I played this game before I understood what a computer actually was... Needless to say I have few memories of ever playing it before the age of... well 15... However, just this summer I stumbled upon it; the saga of Myst. Due to an undescribable want to play (and finish) Myst, I ran it to my PC and installed my original copy. Then the story began...

I've been playing this game since I was...lets see here...seven I think.I'm now fourteen, and have started this game over numerous times, and only beat a year ago.It is one of my favorite games of all time, with some of the most beautiful music ever produced, and amazing visules.I haven't played the first two, or the last two, but I just ordered "Myst" and "Riven", and I can't waite.

The best of the Myst series!
I have played all of the Myst games 1-5 and believe that Exile is by far the best of them.I loved the variation in the ages, the story line, and the puzzles.I felt Riven was too difficult and became frustrating because there were puzzles that required going between ages.Exile was up to Myst standards as far difficulty, but wasn't so difficult that it was frustrating or I felt the need to constantly resort to hints to figure parts of it out.
Challenging and entertaining.
The third installment in the Myst series brings us yet another adventure into the beautiful and enchanting worlds of Atrus's creation. The story begins in Tomahna, a tranquil world where Atrus and his family now reside. Upon Catherine's suggestion, you wait inside the study for Atrus's return. Once your old friend arrives, he discusses his plans for the D'ni and the newly created Age of Releeshahn. However, his dialogue is cut short when a strange-looking intruder warps into the room, steals the Releeshahn Book, and immediately links away using his own linking book. Determined to recover the stolen book, you follow the wild man and link to J'nanin, the Lesson Age.

I enjoyed it
The Path of the Shell was in all, an enjoable experience for me. I experienced some technical problems with the install, but nothing difficult to fix or damaging to the computer. The graphics are fantastic, the sound incredible, the Ages intriguing. Many of the puzzles are a bit harder than I would like (The Ahnonay age is so hard, you can hardly even tell if you're in the puzzle or not).

It's not a game, it's clickable art
To D'Ni and Path of the Shell are gorgeous, no doubt about that. Indeed, you may find yourself just walking around and gawking at the scenery. The designers have also done their usual fine job with sound.

Warning to all: runs only on out-of-date systems.
I can't comment on Riven itself but I can comment on the misleading marketing.I have a Mac operating Mac OS 10 on a PowerPC chip. The system requirements list only "PowerPC" as required.But in fact Riven only operates under the "Classic" environment which means Mac's running 10.2.6 or LESS.Buyer beware.
Second great installment in the Myst saga
I tell you this, the creators of Riven sure did their homework in the four year gap between the original Myst and Riven. The graphic improved drastically, meaning whatever computer you were running the original Myst in '93/'94 (Myst first appeared on the Mac in '93, then the PC the following year) would probably not be adequate to run Riven. Certainly Myst had made even greater improvements in the graphics department since Riven, like the 360 degree panning feature for Myst III: Exile, and even more photo-realistic graphics and animation for Myst IV: Revelation, but even for 1997 standards the graphics to Riven still hold up, although it's rather obvious the graphics looks a little more pixelated during some of the animated scenes (like when you take a ride on the cable car, probably to keep the animation fast without slowing it down for the computers of the time). But for the most part, the graphics seem so realistic you almost feel like you're there. Of course the big pain is this game consisted of 5 CD-ROM discs, which you have to swap every now and then, it's too bad they didn't have an install feature where you could install all five discs on to hard drive and only need to use one disc to play the game (like the much maligned Schizm: Mysterious Journey, a game from Poland that's very much like Myst, which had five discs in the CD-ROM version, and you had the option for full install so you didn't have to keep swapping discs).
The biggest Myst game
This game actually stands up to the test of time, as opposed to Myst part one's antiquated technology, and ancient graphics...Unfortunately, I never got to play these games when they came first came out, and being spoiled with all the improvements in the visual department over the years, had to start with Riven instead of Myst. The game is probally the largest and most meticulous effort of all 5 games, simply for being a little larger and a little more designed then many of the future under-developed, but beautiful lands Myst would take us to..Obviously this game is for a certain type of "quiet" gamer, who prefers exploration and figuring out how to work a puzzle out over visceral, button mashing action..If those attributes do intriuge you as a gamer however, there is no better place and example to start with then the legendary Myst series.. ... Fantastic Game, Sorely Outdated
I played the original Myst on a Windows 3.1 oh so many years ago, and I loved it.I know this is for Windows 95/98, but Windows XP does have compatibility options.Unfortunately, they don't work.The sound is scratchy, the movies don't play right, the game crashes inconsistently.
Cool game but needs more to it
I think the Myst Masterpiece Edition is a pretty cool game, but it needs better graphics. RealMyst is much better. I just find the Myst Masterpiece Edition not realistic enough.

"the name of the game is the same"
a famous quote(too bad i forgot the author), but the meaning hits home. a fancy-dancy box combined with a fancy-dancy name gives us the "masterpiece" edition. digitally remastered this, digitally remastered that(yada yada yada). after i saved the princess, the game was considered over (oops wrong game) but i think you can see the comparitive logic. this game is only recommended for somone that never played myst before, i mean, how many times can you solve a puzzle if you already know the solution ?? double check your computers system limits and options before loading the disc....as the myst series evolved, so did the hint books. thats a shame, a game shouldnt rely on "hint books". a game shouldnt have to be spoon fed to me. ... A great companion to the game
This CD is well worth the buy, especially as a companion to the game. The music is haunting and joyous, the perfect sound for the right place in the game. The music in the game can be easily heard, and, if you've played the game, you can really see where the music is placed in the game while listening to it.
Don't be fooled, it's classic stuff.
Composer Jack Wall took over scoring duties from Robyn Miller for Myst III, and although he takes the music in an entirely new direction, the main Myst jingle is still in there. But it's now evolved into something a whole lot more involving and effective. A perfect accompaniment to a great game
This is a beautiful and colorful soundtrack to go with the beautiful and colorful worlds of Exile. I love the addition of wind and strings to the usual synthesizer music, which was great by itself but better with real instruments. It always fits the mood of the environment perfectly, and is noticeable without being obtrusive. One of the best games ever
This game may have been first released in 1993, but it's quite good for such an early game. Unlike in realMYST, you don't see many straight lines, and the shadows make it seem like it's actually real compared to recent 3D games. For those who've played realMYST but not this, extra features include:

A Blast
This is one of the best games I have ever played! It is so much better than the Myst Masterpiece Edition. I recomend people who don't have Myst yet to get this instead of the Myst Masterpiece Edition. They will probably like it better. Thank you Cyan for making such an amazing game!

See MYST the way it should be
MYST was a pioneer game that was ahead of its time in many ways, and which has never really been duplicated in anything outside of its sequels.It imerses you in a rich, detailed, beautiful, and intellectually stimulating world that grabs hold and won't let you go.When my husband and I first played MYST, we did not do anything else from the time we were hooked until the time we solved the game.We ate in front of the computer, slept only a little, and in general ignored the rest of the world, because the puzzles were calling.(We were grad students at the time, and no one really missed us for a few days, luckily.)
BUYING TIP!!!
This game was a lot of fun but a little short compared to the other Myst games. Riven is perhaps the best of the Myst series but I have yet to play Revelation. You can buy this game new and cheaper just about anywhere. And if you still have no luck, try Ebay. This game also works for Windows XP!!! Some people have had a little trouble with it but just make sure you download the patch which can be found at ubisoft.com. I played RealMyst on XP with no trouble. Good luck and ENJOY! ... Read more

I have all three Myst Trilogy games working perfectly under Windows XP Pro (SP2) OS on my PC.It has an Nvidia GeForce FX 5600 video card with 256 mb RAM, which is recommended by Ubisoft for this product.

A gem
The original CD-ROM Riven I gave a 4/5, and also a 4/5 for the Playstation version mainly due to the disc swapping. But the DVD-ROM version is a relief. Now you can enjoy this great adventure without switching discs every few minutes which makes it feel more realistic in my opinion. This is a great game. I recommend it to any video-gamer who is up for a new, unique, challenge.

very fun, VERY DIFFICULT
I enjoyed Riven very much. It wasn't a game that you got through in a single afternoon, and it keeps you challenged, but with adequate rewards for defeating puzzles. It is nice that you can wander and choose your puzzles at the beginning. Be warned, however, the game gets VERY DIFFICULT when you get to the fire marbles,and at this point, figuring out the location and the color of the marbles, the game requires Albert Einstein IQ, but you can handle it....right? The only dissapointment that I experienced was that of capturing Ghen. When I opened the book, I had expected something to the effect of: NO! How could you do this to me! Instead, you merely see dunny swirling around. No big deal, but slightly dissapointing. If you are looking for a clean, challenging game that will keep you busy for a long,long time, look no further. Riven is the game for you.

One of the best games I've ever played!
Riven is a wonderful computer game- the sequel to the phenomenal Myst and the prequel to the extremely wonderful Myst: Exile. It takes a while to finish it, but it's worth it. I would recommend buying a walkthrough book or if you really wanted to figure it out on you own, get a writing pad and draw EVERYTHING that you see. It'll come in handy. Careful with Windows XP
I didn't carefully review the system requirements before ordering this game. I run Windows XP (home edition), and at first I thought I was not going to be able to get it to work at all. The game seemed to install OK, but it would not run after the installation. However, I was able to get it up and running by downloading the patch (available at ubisoft), and by adjusting the compatibilty after right-clicking on the executable file.
Board Games?!?!?!
Well, what can I say. THis game has great acting, good graphics, emursive worlds, and overall good gameplay. The only thing I don't like about it is that the buzzles are to descrete. Its almost as if they were meant to look like they were meant to be puzzles. It can't be something like myst where the puzzles are there for a logical reason, and it can't be like Uru where the puzzles were blended in with the enviroment so the game was harmonic, and it can't be like riven where the puzzles are not puzzles, but problems you had to face that required some brain power. THese puzzles, even though they go with the suroundings, they still are too descrite. I mean, its almost like they were ment for you. THings here aren't what they used to be. The puzzles themselves are quite impresive, but the way that they blend in with the age is like sticking srawberries in orange juice. For one thing, yet another puzzle is actually a puzzle age in itself. Its all puzzle and really seems like it was meant for your presance, not like it had any real fuction outside your enjoyment. Even the plant age has that. Lense flowers that focus the sun's light on large bulbs that hold electic fish and power plant machines. Even thier idea of a balaced enviroment is even more descrete. THe lense flower couldn't've just grown there without there being a purpouse. I mean really, how deep do you want me to get.

Wow! The best buy for Myst and Riven!
There is enough review of Myst and Riven scattered around in Amazon, or in magazines. By now, you should have been told: GET THE GAME AND PLAY! Westarted with Riven, and then played Myst, which was a little morechallenging because less natural. With Riven, it felt like we were livingthe game and that helped a lot. But regardless, you'll enjoy it (even ifyou have to ask for help because the puzzles are SOOOO CHALLENGING!). Rivenhas more of a unity (and such beauty!), while Myst is more of a patch. Butthey are both thoroughly enjoyable.
