5-0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!
I played this game for two minutes. The first thing I wanted to do was to sign on to amazon.com and write a positive note about it.It is AMAZING!It installed easily. You only need the CD to start the game.Apparently there is a patch that you can download that allows for starting the game without a CD, but who cares?
5-0 out of 5 stars an AMAZING chess tool, especially for chess newbies.
I have always enjoyed playing chess, although I have never been very good at it. Pretty much I knew how the pieces move as well as some very simple strategies such as forks, and simple traps (which were often avoided). Recently i've been getting back into it but this time I wanted to actually become good at chess. I couldn't decide if I wanted this one, Fritz or Chessmaster 9000 (slightly cheaper). Well, I am very happy with this purchase. I decided on this one because it has even more training material, which was my main goal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Have to be a chess fan
This is a very cool game for those of us who play chess regularly and just want some pointers on how to become better. I dont think this would help chess masters get better, but like I said it is great for someone who knows chess and wants some advice on how to become better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this worthless game unless you love to be frustrated
I was looking for an intructional CD to help my daughter to learn chess.I read the reviews and endorsements and thought that this was what I was looking for.WRONG!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Trainer for New Chess Player
Our 7-year old loves this program and is learning chess the fast, fun and easy way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing chess product
I was extremely disappointed with this chess software. With my newest PC I bought this year, the program is buggy when it comes to sound and music, which they do acknowledge in their manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for kids
This is an excellent product for kids. My kid loves to learn with this software. I had issues installing this product. Other than installation issues, it has been excellent. We are having fun now!
4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful training games
Although this game maybe aimed for kids, it can still offer powerful training games in an entertaining way. Each assorted machines is like an arcade that trains each tactical aspects individually. Such as blind Chess, eye-training, memory training of chess positions are most notable that separates it from the other beginner chess training programs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Happy Mom
My children absolutely love this version. They wake at 5 a.m. to play before school. My son says "it's great--I've learned lots of tips, and now I'm a much better chess player."

3-0 out of 5 stars Get Chessmaster Instead
I gave my Chessmaster 9000 to a friend and bought Fritz 9 as a replacement. Big mistake. Fritz may have a slightly more powerful engine but there are only a few Grand Masters who would even test the limits of any chess program. For 99% of the people, Chessmaster would crush them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chess review
This game is highly interactive and has the ability to personalize in many ways.I have enjoyed many hours of playing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fritz 9 has the software, but not the engine
You want a simple chess program? Go search for WinBoard. If you want to play 3D Chess just for the look, then I am sure you can find all sorts of swanky looking 3D chess boards out there. If I want to play on-line I can go on yahoo games and play any one of the thousands of chess games for free for as long as I want. If however you are interested in chess engines (the AI behind the chess software) then obviously you are considering getting a decent piece of chess software with some brains rather than just a ritzy looking chess board (why not actually spend on a ritzy look chess board instead!). The Fritz 9 package is basically offering the latest Chessbase software and the Fritz 9 engine. There are many engine players out there who like to play with the best engines such as Rybka, Hiarcs, Shredder, TOGA II, Deep Fritz or Fruit. Fritz from Chessbase currently offers the best chess analysis software. Most people who want to play chess complain that it is too complex for their needs. Chess players, who play computer chess, play it with Chessbase. Even the GMs (grandmasters) are known to use it. So for people who just want to play chess, then Fritz is probably not for them, especially at the price tag, which is near a whopping $40 for chess and can be upgraded to a $100 worth of chess software if you go with the latest engines. Let us just state for the record right now that there is a very cheap and excellent Chessbase product called "Deep Fritz: Grand Master Deluxe" for $20. It comes with the Deep Fritz 8 engine and the Fritz 8 Chessbase software. That is a very powerful engine and a very nice piece of Chessbase software, which has all the same analysis tools as the latest Fritz 9 Chessbase software update. For $20 that kind of chess power is an absolute steal. The problem is that it is just not the latest Chessbase software. Before we talk about engines we should talk about the Fritz 9 Chessbase software which is at its cheapest in the Fritz 9 chess package. The Fritz 9 manual is a bit better than any previous offering. It is in full color. There is also an entirely separate manual for the on-line Playchess feature. Fritz 9 loads quicker and runs quicker. It defaults to a blue and white board that is not so harsh on the eyes. The icons are nicer. The arrows indicating movement are transparent and do not look as stark. There are some new game types. The 3D board is greatly enhanced with a new 3D control panel for moving the board and camera. There are expanded 3D settings with new character animations, such as the Turk, Mia and the Fritz room with enhanced visual effects with fully rendered backdrops. The manual however is probably what sets Fritz 9 apart from it predecessors as the tutorial is much easier to follow and if you spend a bit of time you can learn all there is to learn about Chessbase just by reading the manual, something that was not really possible with earlier versions without asking someone who knew what they where doing. Is it worth the extra $20 to go from "Deep Fritz: Grand Master Deluxe" to Fritz 9? The answer to that depends on what you want. If you find that Deep Fritz 8 does not offer much of a challenge anymore then you will probably want to improve your engine. The problem is that Fritz 9 might not be the best improvement available to you. The "CSS - Rating List" is a good chess engine rating list. The "bff-liste" is also good and so is the "SSDF Ratings list". Although Rybka leads them all there is some discrepancies between Hiarcs 10, Shredder 10 and Fritz 9. TOGA II is free from UCI and Chessbase can import UCI engines. That is a phenomenal free upgrade. If you want to pay for the best then Rybka is where it is at, but that costs a whopping $70 without Chessbase software. Hiarcs 10 and Shredder 10, come with the new Chessbase software but at a price of $50. Fritz 9 is $10 cheaper with an engine that can compete (note compete, not always beat, but compete and even loose) with Hiarcs 10 and Shredder 10. Fritz 9 is currently the standard Chessbase offering. It is available almost everywhere. Hiarcs 10 and Shredder 10 are a bit harder to get because they are professional chess engines and not mainstream like the Fritz and Deep Fritz offerings. The truth is that your best deal is "Deep Fritz: Grand Master Deluxe" for $20 which gives you Deep Fritz 8, the last Chessbase software without a great manual but with full analysis and an import function for the UCI Toga II engine. That is a very powerful piece of chess software for $20. If you really want the latest Chessbase software then Fritz 9 gives you just that for $40 plus the Fritz 9 engine. Fans of Hiarcs or Shredder would probably feel better shelling out the extra $10 for their favourite engine that comes with the Fritz 9 software package. The top professional players will probably get Fritz 9 for $40 just for the Chessbase software update and buy the Rybka engine for $70 for a whopping $110 chess software package. Right now it is all relative to how much you want to spend and if you have a preference for Hiarcs or Shredder. Also Chessbase software is not the most stable software in the world. Fritz 9 chessbase software does solve some its old crashing problems and analysis bugs. A lot of the mystery lockups and functions that cease to work in previous editions are working now. The bottom line however is that there is nothing like Chessbase software out there, but there are optional versions of this software. Since nothing can compete with it we should be lucky to get a Chessbase upgrade at all, even if it is a poor one, it at least tries to correct a few things... but it could correct a whole lot more. If you own a previous Chessbase I don't think you should be worrying too much. If you have bought Hiarcs 10 or Shredder 10, then you have the latest Chessbase and some of the nicest engines out there. What you really need to know is that you can work out a better engine configuration than Fritz 9 with "Deep Fritz: Grand Master Deluxe" plus TOGA II, for half the costs ($20). For $40 you spend an extra $20 on the latest Chessbase software, but the TOGA II engine can beat the Fritz 9 engine. The very existence of TOGA II for free with Chessbase's ability to import that engine is why I would say doing a bit more research is important. However you can easily slap down $40, get Fritz 9 with the latest Chessbase software, and TOGA II for free also. You can pay an extra $10 and have the same configuration with Hiarcs 10 and Shredder 10 with a free TOGA II. "Deep Fritz: Grand Master Deluxe" offers the best value overall. Fritz 9 is nice to have but absolutely not necessary, but it is still a great engine, and not as bad as many would like to make it out to be. I am sure many software users are waiting until Deep Fritz 9 comes out... and probably rightly so. Maybe then we would have a new Fritz engine worth talking about.

2-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but I'm disappointed
I've used many version of Chessmaster since version 3000, but CM 9000 is the first that's really frustrated me. Not because of the strength of play, but because of bugs that Ubi Soft seems to have no desire or ability to fix. At times, the computer tells me my game clock has run out, even though I have plenty of time left. When I look at the clock, it shows some ludicrous time, such as -43:00. At other times, the pregenerated opponents will simply stop thinking. You can sit until their time runs out, and they will not make a move. Neither problem happens all the time, but enough to be irritating.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Frustrating and Disappointing
Beware if you consider buying this product.I couldn't wait to try it out on my computer, but after spending hours trying to download it, I finally gave up.It actually may have been downloaded, but every time I tried to log in from the opening screen, my computer would crash.Others seem to have the same problem with Chessmaster, so it's not like I'm the only one this has happened to.This is completely inexcusable.I've downloaded other software before and never had any problems.Even if your computer seems to fulfill the system requirements that are listed on the cover, good luck trying to download it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Only one problem
Very strong play, but the CD needs to be in the drive most of the time, which is unreasonable, and enough trouble to keep me from using the program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is a fascinating piece of software and I love it. I can play sometimes for hours because the overall quality is really majestic. I am sure that if your computer or laptop meets the requirements you will have a great time with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unclear requirements
I did not know it wouldn't work off an intel graphics controller on my Dell 800 MhZ computer. It needs specific graphics controllers. It seems like it is launching then disappears. I feel I am stuck with this now. Being a technology person for the past 25 years, I believed this would be no problem to run. I was wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game!
This game is a terrific vehicle for teaching chess strategy to kids--ok, maybe adults too.My [...] and I play together and have a great time. The adventure game really holds his attention. The only drawback to the game is that the "save" command is buried in "options." This means it is very easy to exit without saving your game.Still, I recommend it highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What it is and What it ain't
It is:
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a Grandmaster......
As one of Mr. Kasparov's first such ventures, this was one heck of a product. It's best used in a computer v.s a DVD player. I agree with a previous review that the language is a bit tough, but I could appreciate the natural conversation. The games are excellent, but I wished that he had gone into more detail about the decision for some moves. Overall, it's a worth the purchase. I actually obtained this version from the manufacturer, before it was available on Amazon, so the Amazon price is much better. I just wish that Amazon would come thru with #2, that's been on order since January!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit disorganized.
I enjoyed watching Kasparov discuss the Queen's Gambit with such brilliance, and I agree with other reviewers who say that he comes across as down-to-earh. There is no question about his passion for the game, and any chess player will enjoy the commentary of this legendary grandmaster. I give it four stars because a better production was actually possible. In fact, with a bit of focus and organization, this DVD could have been a valuable instructional tool. The problem is that Kasparov goes on many tangents, and while this is occasionally unavoidable when discussing variations, it can become tedious. It's not a matter of his English, either--he expresses himself well. Overall, I couldn't help but get the impression that this was filmed haphazardly--that is, he probably just sat down and began discussing the opening any which way. What was needed was the careful selection of themes within the framework of the lecture; the DVD could have been divided into crucial minilessons that retained focus instead of random observations with loose-fitting titles. If the aim was to teach, then the approach needs modification. I'm a decent player with club and some tournament experience. I followed him as best as I could, but I can see a beginner being easily overwhelmed and quickly losing interest. As a fan, it's a pleasure to watch him discuss the game; as a life-long student of chess, I expect more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Biggest bargain for quality chess program
Got CM8000 for the absolute bargain of $9.95 Australian (approx US$6) as bargain priced "NEW" software. Nothing for even five or ten times the price remotely compares.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really Bad!!!!!
I taught my kids how to play chess on this game when we had an old Commadore computer a few years back. It was really kid freindly back then with pawns jousting and some of the captured pieces being turned into toads. Kids and adults couldn't get enough of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS FOR XP USERS!!!!BUY IT!!!!!
Okay, the Battle chess collection does have two more games than this bundle but the bottom line is that it only works if you have Windows 95/98 and DOS 3.1 or higher. For those of us who do not possess outdated computers but long for these classic games should get this bundle.I had the collection, but could not get it to work.I then bought this bundle for only $6.15! (and the price just seems to be getting better. When I popped it into my computer, I was delighted to finally play battle chess and battle chess II.The only problem is that the sound for Chinese Chess comes from the PC's internal speakers (really, this isn't a problem, as it sounds basically the same for this game). So if you have an old computer with Windows 95-8 and DOS, then by all means, buy the collection, but if you have an XP, this will work (I don't think it works on 2000 or Me).Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Animated Chess Game
Battle Chess is an excellent game.Downloading onto our Windows 98 was a bit tedious but once we read the Read Me ( START, RUN, then type D:/ )from the CD and learned the right way to download it, we haven't had a problem with it.Don't use the auto install window that pops up.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No, This really is the DeepFritz 8 Engine
A review of my engine management screen shows that it is Deep Fritz 8.An "acid test", in my own mind, was the pairings with my regular Fritz 8 engine. My Deep Fritz 8 wins about 55% against my Fritz 8.The 8/2006 poster is incorrect about the product being Deep Fritz 6.Deep Fritz 6 would not have a chance against Fritz 8, much less score 55%.This is a great bargain in the modern world of cheap information that we live in, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is Deep Fritz 6!!!
Contrary to what a previous reviewer stated...this is actually Deep Fritz 6!!! This is the sister program to 'Fritz Grandmaster Challenge' which is based on the Fritz 6 engine. If want just the Fritz interface, you might want to consider going with that for only $15! If you want a slightly stronger engine than Deep Fritz 6 (2715 elo), you might want to think about going with Fritz 7 (2743 elo), which is also selling for $20! Deep Fritz 8 (2786 elo) is actually currently selling for $70!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars DF8 engine for $20 = what are you waiting for?
You want a simple chess program? Go search for WinBoard. If you want to play 3D Chess just for the look, then I am sure you can find all sorts of swanky looking 3D chess boards out there. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST CHESS PROGRAM
Fritz is, no doubt, one of the strongest chess program in the market. This program is plened for the tournament player on one who is more than a newcomer in chess. But, that dosen't mean that a beginer can play wit it, you can decrese the strength of the program, to makeit more weaker, and a perfect partner for the amateur.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fritz 8 is nice.
I guess Fritz 8 is stronger than chessmaster 8000 (GOOD). I have almost the whole family of chessmaster xxxx (from 2000 to 8000). Fritz 8 human interface is not very friendly or intuitive, maybe I spent too much time with the chessmaster series. I could not find the self-play mode in Fritz. The analysis of Fritz is very professional, it even uses the international symbols to grade the position. However I'd like to see another mode to give numeric values at each position like chessmaster, the symbol =/+ , +/=, etc. are not specific enough (at least to a detail player like me.) The user manual is hard to follow.
3-0 out of 5 stars Worst User Interface Ever Designed!!
This program has a lot of features, however, it's pretty close to impossible to figure out how to get the features to work. I've never in my life seen a program with such a non-discoverable, non-intuitive, obscure interface. What is truly amazing about this program, is you can read the manual and still not figure out how to use the features!I've just spent 2 hours (including studying the manual) trying to figure out how to load a PGN file of some games that I've played to use the analysis features of the program and I still have no clue how to do it. Unbelievable.I've used several other chess programs and never had to even open the manual.I've used 100's of windows programs and this is clearly the worst interface I've ever seen. ... Read more

The graphic design is absolutely cool. The plataform is great and I am really enjoing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a beginner
I picked up the ValueSoft version a few days ago, and I'm really enjoying it. The last time I played chess was over 20 years ago, and I wanted this game ever since I played the demo. There appears to be a lot of basic information about chess I never knew about before. Variable graphics and music are very conducive to play. I'm working on both the Adventure mode and Tutorials. These two modes mirror each other in content, though it's easier in Tutorial to select the topic one wishes to cover. Quizes and mini-games seem about the same in either mode.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Graphics and Great for Kids Who Can Read
I like this chess game for beginner to intermediate players, and my young kids love it because of the great graphics (even 3D shading on a 2D board) and especially the adventure mode. The tutorials are quite good with short quizzes and games.I do see the drawbacks mentioned in the other reviews:

3-0 out of 5 stars Good game with a stupid interface
The game is quite enjoyable on the whole, though it is a little light on the special features. One very annoying "feature" of this software is when you try to synchronize a profile from the Palm to the PC. It is very unclear as to which is the source, and which is the target. Time and time again, the wrong profile gets synchronized. The idiots who designed the user interface need to learn how to see a software from the user's perspective.
1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
I didn't care for the graphics in this game, even though I had high hopes for a game that would run both on my Palm tungsten E2 and my PC. But I find it distracting if I can't clearly make out the pieces or see the position on the board, and this failed in that area on both platforms. Luckily I didn't spend too much. I much prefer Fritz or Pawn on the PC, Chess Tiger on the Palm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even worth a look
Poor graphics, few features, limited playing styles, nothing to really recommend this title at all. Don't waste your time. Buy ChessMaster for $20 and forget this one exists. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Chess/Research Program
Deep Fritz 8 and Deep Shredder 9 are the two best research programs available out there. Yes, if you have a computer with only one superfast CPU and a ton of ram, you are better off with Fritz 9, since it's more affordable, and it is optimized for only one CPU. Having said that, Deep Fritz's playing strength increases dramatically if you go from say 2 CPUs to 4 CPUs. The interface however hasn't changed much, which begs the question: What has chessbase been doing during the past year. I mean going from Deep Fritz 7 to Deep Fritz 8, you need to add more features and capabilities to your program to make people want to buy it. After all, Deep Fritz 7 is pretty strong itself, and since most of us use chess program for playing and analysis, using either program doesn't make a dramatic difference. The Verdict: Over-Priced, But Strong. Well worth it if you have a huge load of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep Fritz made easy
I read the reviews and decided to buy mine at Amazon from their chess shop, ChessCentral so I could get support if I needed it. Everyone knows Viva Media doesn't support their products.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good program, bad support
The program is pretty good, but it isn't much better than Fritz 7, and isn't much faster either, so it doesn't seem worth the extra over just the normal Fritz8. I'm also really annoyed about the support - my CD came without a user manual, which means that I don't have a product key to register my copy, and can't play online. Amazon blamed the publisher, and the publisher blamed Amazon, and I still don't have a manual or a product key.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good game - if you have the right system
I've had this Chessmaster for some time. Great fun. The only thing I would reiterate is that this is for Windows 95/98 only. Windows NT and 2000 will assuredly not work (check the chessmaster6000 website where they say so explicitly). With windows XP some people can get it to work, others not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only for Windows 95/98!
The platform info at the top of this Chessmaster 6K page indicates compatibility with "Linux, Mac OS, Unix, Windows Me / 2000 / 95 / 98 / NT". The program does not work with Macintosh. The 2 disks state " WINDOWS 95/98". So don't buy this if you think it's for multiple platforms.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chessmaster 6000 Hates WindowsXP
I Also have a pentium 4 machine and a AMD anthlon and The Chessmaster 6000 version will not run on either. I reloaded Windows 98 on one system and got it to play. A real disappointment that the 6000 version is such a pain, It is a great program. But then how would they get you to upgrade to the now Chessmaster 9000 version. Kinda sounds like Microsoft's way of doing business doesn't it? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Unsatisfied
I have never experienced so many defects in a computer program.Absolutely WORTHLESS!!!And no, I do not have a bootleg copy. This product is a joke.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent application that could use some improvement
I've owned and used all the Chessmaster programs beginning with Chessmaster 2100 including Chessmaster 3000 for the Mac.The program has gradually become stronger and stronger, from perhaps something like a clueless class D player to something like a grandmaster. The engine in this program on today's fast machines can play five-minute chess as well as all but the top grandmasters, and at whatever time limit as well as an international master. However the ratings given for the various personalities need to be taken with a grain of salt and some understanding.I'll get to that in a bit.2-0 out of 5 stars Good program, lousy compatibility
The program itself is quite good for an intermediate player like myself. However, it does not run on my Win2K machine at all. I loaded it on my Windows XP machine, but this isn't much better. The game runs, but has a habit of locking up the PC unexpectedly and randomly in the middle of games. I plan to ask for my money back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value and variety
Even though not all the programs would load properly, the cheap price and variety on offer make this exceptional value.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chess Advantage 3=Chessmaster 7000
I seen this in a store and bought it without checking out the reviews.I dont like Lego Chess, Combat Chess, Ultimate Chess, or Cyber Chess. They are just filler. But Chessmaster 7000 is very good.It has alot of good training drills and many different strength players to play against. So I feel it was a good buy.But I was unaware at the time that there were newer Chessmaster's out.So this is alitte high considering that Chessmaster 7000 is the only good game.I would recommend buying just Chessmaster 7000 by itself or a newer version if you can get it cheaper than this bundle.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good set of games but needs a few updates.
If chess is considered the game of kings, then Chess Advantage III would model. Encore Software has put together 5 different and unique versions of chess that will give everyone a challenge and create fun at the same time.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars laguy
This is (was) a great program.I used it for a few years and learned a great deal. However, I have experienced the same problem noted in another review. In November I bought a new Dell using Win XP.My old computer, which ran this program very well, had Win 98.It won't run on my new computer and I've since found out that it is not XP compatible, and the patches available at the Chessmaster website can't fix that problem. So today I ordered Chessmaster 8000, which apparently does run on Win XP.The newest version out is actually Chessmaster 9000, but that is selling at full price ($29) whereas the 8000 was less than $10, and there isn't much difference between the programs.4-0 out of 5 stars Chess Master 5500
I enjoy this game very much, as do my three grandchildren, ages 7,8,and 9.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER GOT IT TO RUN!
I cannot tell how great this item might have been...it certainly was presented as a great chess resource and game and I think it has a great reputation. Unfortunately, I could never get it to run on a brand new DELL computer or any other computer I tried to install it on... these computers were new computers with windows 2000 on them... maybe that is the problem since 5500 runs on win95/98. It would be reasonable to expect that it would also run on more current versions... but it does not... ... Read more
